Monday Musings – New Hairdo and Hobby

Happy Monday, ladies. This week’s ramblings are, as usual, personal and all over the map. There’s some navel-gazing with a small amount of whining and other sundry things that are on my mind.

I don’t think I shared this outfit that I wore in Lake Tahoe over Thanksgiving. If I did, here’s your second look :)Fair Isles are synonymous with winter style, and I was anxious to get another opportunity to wear this dress. My fair isle sweater dress is from last year, but they have one almost identical dress this year. This dress from Talbots is also similar but without the pattern on the bottom, which would make you look taller. The cashmere scarf- similar here was a surprise and lovely gift from Talbots several years ago. My boots are eons old, but black riding boots don’t change much over the years. The velvet leggings are a toasty alternative to opaque tights I love to wear all winter long.

MORE FAIR ISLE SWEATER DRESSES

I’m also wearing three of these pearl necklaces around my wrist as a bracelet. I love their easy on/off magnetic closure that I simply attached end-to-end, then wrapped around my wrist. Remember, you can save 15% off sitewide with the code AWSL at checkout, and they have free US shipping.

I don’t know about you, but my teeth are a train wreck, and the older I get, the bigger the problems become. I needed braces as a kid but didn’t get them. I’m dealing with a crossbite, plus I grind my teeth, so I have lots of chipped teeth and now cracked crowns. I tried braces last year, but I have two implants that were not a good mix with braces, so that didn’t work. I spent five hours in the dentist’s chair last week, and there will be many more visits before calm and relative order is restored in my mouth 🙂 I drive two hours each way to see my old dentist because I trust him with my teeth…call me crazy, but there you have it. Whining over…I’m lucky to have the teeth I do 🙂

I got a new ‘do last week, and it’s taking some time for me to get used to it. My hair has gotten so thin that my stylist and I agreed it was time to grow out my layers and go a bit shorter. The result looks dangerously like a bob. I say dangerously because bobs feel so expected on a woman with fine, thin hair, and I’d prefer a more unique style.

It’s the best haircut for my current hair, but I don’t care for the look, so it’s time to get a little creative with how I style it. She suggested a paste at the roots, which I’m game to try. As a funny aside, my stylist mentioned my color looked different than she remembered. I told her it’s just gotten older and grayer. She thinks I’m overdoing the purple shampoo, so it’s likely a combo of the two. At any rate, it’s not as silver as I want, so I’m a bit frustrated by it. BTW- this photo makes it look blonder than it is in person.

Taking up an old hobby

On our way to Lake Tahoe last week, we stopped for lunch and some window shopping in Truckee. As we strolled the main street, a store window stopped me cold…I mean, dead stop and stare. There were a few balls of yarn, knitting needles, and a handknit wrap in the window. I had to go in.

My mom taught me to knit at 14, and I became an obsessive knitter for 45+ years. I never went anywhere without a project and often knit for 8+ hours daily. I made myself and my family tons of sweaters, hats, afghans, etc. I’m not sure when I stopped, but I think it was when AWSL became more than a full-time job. Rather than occupying my spare time with knitting, I began spending my time creating content for social media, editing photos, or writing blog posts. Arthritis in my hands began getting worse, and I wondered if it was because of all the knitting I’d done.

Whatever the reason, I stopped knitting cold and never looked back…until that shop window drew me in. It pained me to buy knitting needles because I have multiples of every size imaginable at home. We would be at the Lake for three days, and I had to start knitting right then, so I bought the needles to do it.

My rusty skills took several attempts to fire back up, but once they did, I felt the old obsession take over. Knitting is a form of meditation for me. The repetitive motion and stitch counting are both monotonous and soothing. The kit I bought is not my favorite pattern, yarn weight, or color, but that’s not the point. The process is the point for me, and I’m delighted to have taken up this old hobby again.

What hobbies have you let go of that you might want to get back to now?

Thanks for reading, and be sure to wear what makes you feel confident.

I think your new hair style is adorable! You look great!
I’m trying to teach myself to crotchet. I saw someone on instagram crocheting and it mesmerized me. So calming and soothing that I decided to try it. Wish me luck!

    1. Good luck! I can’t crochet at all.

  2. Jennifer,
I wish you liked your new hairstyle as much as I do. It’s simple yet chic! At 70 I am still searching for a style that’s flattering yet easy to maintain.

Jennifer, you might try Paul Mitchell Extra-Body Thicken Up Styling Liquid. Looks like you can get it on Amazon. I use Not Your Mother’s Plump for Joy Thickening Hair Lifter myself. I can now only find it at ULTA and it looks to be about to be discontinued. The Paul Mitchell was used on me in a salon years ago but was so expensive.
My problem is not thinning hair but the front part of the top of my head’s hair grows forward and I don’t want bangs, I want it to turn in the opposite direction.
I also use a cheap basic fairly stiff gel first, mousse doesn’t work. I have thick hair, tons of it. Put on the gel first and work that through well. Then section off about four parts across the top of your head one by one front to back, squirting the thickening spray right at the part area. Work it in well, then move to the next one. I also squirt about five squirts across my front hairline and work that in well with my fingers. Wash my hands and then blow dry. I don’t use a brush, just my fingers lightly.
Several companies make this type of product but it is hard to find. It is like a very thin gel. The tip gets clogged sometimes, it helps to rinse it with hot water.
New hairdressers cannot believe my hair does not grow back all over until they wash my hair and it is all out and then it starts snapping forward as it dries! It makes it stand up nicely too. I love it. I tried paste one or two times but it felt tacky and looked dull. It was not for me.
    Good luck!

    1. Thank you for your great suggestions!

  4. First, love your hair. I like that you decided to try a new style. I’m always experimenting, but I’m lucky, I have very thick hair. Also, I recently went back to knitting. I love getting together with friends, and meeting new people, to knit,

  5. I like your hair! I like the color! I like the style! You look fantastic!

I am glad to hear you are knitting again. As a seemingly life long knitter myself, I understand what you mean by the process is what is important. I knit some every day and have knitted sweaters, socks, gloves, hats, etc..

My other “hobbies” are baking, ( I love making pastries. Because they are almost always gifted to friends, neighbors, and family, I am a well loved person). I am an artisan soap maker. I love beautiful soaps and luxury formulas so I decided to perfect the soap making skill. Recently I have taken up paper crafts. I belong to a group of crafters that I have learned so much from. I do cards and fancy boxes. It is very relaxing to create new designs and work with beautifully designed papers.

In my life time I have engaged myself in many many creative hobbies, and even now at 74y/o I am always looking for new creative outlets.

Bottom line Jennifer, I am happy you are knitting again, and enjoying it so much.

    1. Thank you so much, Elaine. I love the sound of all your crafts! Creating beautiful things gives me such joy.

  6. Susan A Schmidt says:

I love your hair. Very classic, but timeless. And I recently started crocheting again. It is very relaxing & can be beneficial. Eventually!

  7. Serendipitous, I just returned late this afternoon from getting my hair cut and sat down with a cup of tea to catch up on your blog. Agree with all the compliments on your new ‘do” as my latest style is very similar to yours as is my ‘growing-out-the gray-since-July 2021’ color, super fine texture and seemingly thinning by the year (and I’ve always had thin hair to start with). My stylist called the cut a Bixie, combining a bob with a pixie. I wasn’t familiar with the term, and she explained it is popular since it isn’t as short as a pixie or as helmet-hair predictable as a regular bob. You’re “trending” and it sure looks like the fan base here loves it!

  8. I just have to say that normally on the Internet, the number one rule is to avoid the comments. That is so the opposite on this blog! What a lovely community of strong, supportive women. I’m 51 and have been reading for about three years. I love your style and recommendations and I love your new hair! I’ve tried a lot of different things for thinning hair and for me the magic combo has been washing less, Aveda shampoo, hair vitamins, and a silk pillow case. Anyhow, thanks for providing such a wonderful community and such fantastic content.

    1. Thank you for being part of this community , Jen!! I do the silk pillow case too. I need to write everything down that I do to help my hair. It’s a long list.

  9. Oh my! the teeth problem! Me too! My mom had all her teeth capped in her sixties try to avoid false teeth like HER parents! She later had decay under these and I wonder if that added to dementia??
Our aged dog died of teeth decay going to the brain….
I have had two implants and now are being advised to have another… how does one know…who to trust???
You look so cute so just keep up what ever…
We all are on a path and the INSIDE is what counts most!
    ❤️

    1. I have two implants too! I’d be in big trouble without them.

  10. Personally I love the new hairstyle. I like it better than your old style.

  11. Linda Foltz says:

I love your new hairstyle and you have inspired me to start knitting again!

  12. You look fabulous in your Lake Tahoe outfit! I like your new hairstyle and maybe you’ll like it better with time. I don’t know how often you were using the purple/blue shampoo but my hairdresser warned me not to use it more than once a week.

    1. I’ve cut back to that now 😁

  13. Your air looks great! I’m a few years older than you and I, too, have been searching for a new style. My hair is gray and now is yellowing more than I can control. But, at least I have some hair to worry about.

  14. Well, I have to chime in with so many others and say I love your new do! I think it looks chic and sophisticated. I took up quilting when I retired but gave myself permission to not stress about finishing anything. I love the process as like you, I find it calming as well as creative. Finishing is just a bonus and I do finish most projects. Now I’ve move on to card making as it’s like making little mini quilts in much less time. Still lots of $$ tied up in materials. But isn’t that also half the fun, collecting and planning new things.

  15. Love the new hair style! Wow, those eyes really pop..

  16. I love your new cut! I know what you mean by not wanting to go there with a bob. My hair is almost exactly like yours, but my stylist found a modern way of doing the back. Now when I wake up in the morning, I just run a comb through it …and it falls in place. That part I really like!

  17. I absolutely love your new hair style. I, too, am really thinning….since menopause. My friend and I are considering taking Nutrafol. I’ve read good and not so good results with it. At this point, I will try anything. I envy women with nice thick hair, but I’ll be satisfied if I don’t go completely bald.

    1. I’ve been taking Nutrafol for several years and don’t plan to stop anything soon.

  18. Heather Georgia Chow says:

    Jennifer,

I love, love, love the new hair! Looks beautiful and very fresh and updated. The good thing about hair, ( and this is from someone who has a VERY short cut), is that it always grows! lol

  19. Love your hair! Just beautiful and very flattering!

  20. Love, love your hair!
I usually go close to a week before washing mine, it keeps it fairly healthy. PS, I do shower every day though!
I certainly don’t have perfect either, I did have retainers as a child but unfortunately refused to wear them. Only the “rich” kinds I knew had braces.

You are an inspiration, thank you.

    1. You’re so sweet. My folks could only afford braces for one child and I wasn’t the one who got them 🤣

  21. Barbara Sullivan says:

Your hair does look nice, but I agree with you. I wear a bob, too – but don’t particularly like it. It’s just so expected! Boring. I’ve tried it with bangs and without. Changed hairdressers last year, but it didn’t help. I want a medium length haircut that’s NOT a bob – is there such a thing?!

    1. I had some long layers in my hair for the last few years which I really liked. A long bob, with just a few layers for life.

  22. Donna Gerold says:

I LOVE your new ‘do”,it is so pretty on you! Maybe you will grow to like it. 🙂

  23. Jennifer, if I didn’t know any better, I’d say you’d been following me around in order to write this post! Only a few of my situations are different: First, I didn’t travel anywhere, and second, my hobby since 1985 was cross-stitching. (I’ve tried knotting several times, but the most was ever able to “knit” was a 3″ x 5″ piece which my daughter used as a wrap for her Barbie years ago.) Last, my dentist is only a three-minute drive from my house. The tooth trouble, arthritis, and hair (ooooh, that thin and thinning hair!) have been some of my issues lately, so I can totally relate. I, too, am grateful a d feel blessed that there are things that can be done to help us through it. Thanks for sharing this with us, and for keeping it real. Here’s hoping we can smile on our holiday pictures. Thanks again.

    1. We are all in this together. I’m so glad we have this community to chat about things. We are blessed.

  24. Jennifer, I love your hair. The style looks fabulous on you. As I am a knitter also, I am glad you found the love of it again. Enjoy and thanks for the wonderful fashions and ideas you share with everyone. I look forward to reading your blog everyday!! All the best!!

  25. Well, guess I’m not the only ne, but I love your new hair. To me it’s not expected or fuddy duddy, but modern and cute. I’d be thrilled with that look…I think a lot of us are working through changing thickness, texture and color with our hair. Isn’t knitting the best?! I do mostly socks, blankets, hats. Small easy projects that I can do during tv. Makes me love winter so much more when I have knitting to go along with it!

    1. I love it so much, I can’t believe I quite like I did!

  26. pj hinton says:

I always loved your hair the way you used to wear it, but think that this new style is very attractive and flattering on you!! Your skin looks incredible as well!! Hope your holidays are merry and bright!!

  27. I also like your hair. It is very chic, but I totally understand if you don’t as it’s your hair and not ours.
Now for knitting. I knit all the time and when I stop my arthritis kicks in. I think the repetitive motion helps with arthritis so keep it up.

    1. Maybe that’s why my arthritis got so bad… I stopped knitting! I thought it was the other way around.

  28. My mother was an amazing knitter. I am not very good, but I do enjoy it. Living in North Carolina, we don’t need more warm hats, and our baby grandsons don’t wear many sweaters. So I decided to knit hats for preemies in the NICU. I have six done, and when I have ten, I will donate and then keep knitting more. Wish my mom were still alive to help me.

    1. How wonderful, Arna!! I love that idea. We don’t really need hats either, although my husband is bald, and he could use a new one.

  29. Pat from Wisconsin says:

I find that purple shampoos seem to dull the white or make the white look lavender or gray.. If using that, I will do once a month. I use a clear shampoo the rest of the time so no color can be deposited. I prefer baking soda (couple of teaspoons) mixed with a couple of squirts of shampoo and maybe 3/4 cup of water used in place of shampoo once a month. That is a clarifying mixture recommended on the Going Gray and Loving It Facebook page. It works great, better than purple shampoos.

    1. Wow, that sounds like a fascinating recipe. It doesn’t dry out your ends?

  30. Joanne W. says:

I love your new hair style! You look so beautiful!

    1. Thank you, Joanne. Thay’s so sweet to say.

  31. Your haircut is absolutely fabulous! I think you look 10 years younger! KEEP IT! Not sure at all why you don’t like it! It is wonderful! And keep sharing hair tips too. Thanks!

  32. I do love your new hair do. It looks so
    Lovely on you.
Knitting: so very jealous of people who can knit. Just do it a bit at a time, may be therapeutic for you.
Can’t over do but a little bit will help keep your hands going.
I am a quilter, but the hand sewing is hard but it keeps my fingers moving. A little at a time goes a long way.
    Still love your haircut.
    ❤️

  33. Cristi Cameron says:

I love the new cut. Like everyone else, it seems mine is thinning too. But the texture has also changed, and getting it smooth is a real challenge. What’s worse is one side is entirely badly behaved while the other side does Ok. Just had the top and sides streaked a bit darker to match my darker lower hair. It does not help that my husband has ZERO grey and we are the same age. But I am thankful to have hair as 2 years ago chemo took it all. Sorry about your teeth dental work is no fun. Love your blog.

    1. So glad your cancer is behind you. That does put things into perspective, for sure!

  34. Jennifer I love your outfit and your hair. I think all styles seem to be in right now. At least that’s what my hairstylist says. I feel for you having to be at the dentist that long! I just hate to go. Root canals are the worst for me!

  35. Hi Jennifer, I thought I was the only one knitting these days. Like you it is a meditation for me and it is not the result, although a good result is nice, it is the process. After a stressful day or any day for that matter the needles come out for an hour or so and I am in a lovely space.
    Robyn

    1. It is so soothing, I am very happy I took it up again.

  36. I love your new hairstyle. It doesn’t look frumpy but young and healthy. It frames your face nicely. Perhaps, you just need to get used to a new style or use some product to make it less smooth.

I used to paint (watercolour) but stopped when I was overseas. I often think I should start up again but then doubt stops me. I guess, I just need to start playing around with paints until the skill comes back.

    1. I was horrified that I could not remember a simple long tail cast on!! Horrified. I had to watch Youtube videos to relearn it. I think sometimes the wheels just need a little grease to get moving again.

  37. I join the “yeses” on the new hairdo. It looks lovely and I’m sure you’ll come up with some creative alternatives that make you happy. Thank you for your always frank yet positive musings. It’s so wonderful to have a community of sisters to share with as we face all these changes.

    1. I agree. I love this community, Beth!

  38. I Love your new hair style. Very becoming on you and makes your hair look full and bouncy. Just like knitting for you, crochet is my relaxation. I’ve made way too many afghans!!

    1. That’s how I feel about my knitted scarves 🤣

  39. I love your hair! It is so flattering! Not gonna lie, I’ve been planning on taking a picture of you with your {now ex} hairstyle to my stylist next time I go for a cut. Keep on keeping on, I love reading your words!

  40. Dianne Engman says:

Jennifer your haircut is very flattering!
She did an amazing job of making your hair look thicker.
Time to get out the sparkly & pretty outfits for the season.

  41. Katherine says:

    Jennifer,
I love your new hair cut. The shape looks beautiful. Your hair stylist did so well. It takes getting used to I know. Hopefully you will.
I just had an “oh my” cut. I have learned to let it all go. The blessing is hair grows out. Mine will take forever.

    1. Great attitude Katherine. I’m always careful not to go too short because it does talk a long time to grow out.

  42. Your new haircut looks great on you—very becoming! I’m sure you’ll get used to it in a few weeks!

  43. beth byrd says:

    You look absolutely stunning!

    1. Thanks Beth. You’re so kind.

  44. I’m with your stylist (and many others) in saying that your new cut is fantastic. Your beautiful EYES just pop! Fountain of youth, right there! Thanks for sharing your aging struggles. We all have them, so it’s helpful to commiserate. Cheers to a good week ahead!

    1. You ladies are the best. They very best!

  45. Like the new hair style! Put the Fair Isle dress on my “santa list.” I have fine hair and can’t get much of a lift even with the paste. It’s hard to find the right amount as too much flatens the hair and too little doesn’t do it!!! Have a great week.

  46. Lesley Crane says:

Love the new haircut! I just had a layered short texturized Bob done and I have extremely fine thin hair. It looks so much thicker with the stacking. I dry it upside down and a a spritz of light hairspray some ruffling and it’s done. If I want to be fancy I can twist the strands with a straightening iron or use a hot brush ruffle it and heavier hairspray upside down and and it’s huge! So you can do a lot with a textured Bob! Just play with it.

  47. Hello Jennifer and all: I use a custom made mouth guard to prevent grinding. I was also having a lot of pain during the day due to grinding. I highly recommend the mouth guard. It just fits over your upper teeth. I also use a mouth rinse called Biotene in the fresh mint flavor. This helps me cope more easily with the mouth guard which can make your mouth a little dry. The guards take some getting used to but totally worth it for me. If I have a night where I am really having trouble sleeping, I just take it out. Such a glamorous subject, but very important! I also have trouble with thinning gray hair that keeps going yellow. I use a purple shampoo about once every other week. It seems to help. I like your new cut too! Hang in there with your teeth, you will get to good again.

    1. He’s going to make me a night guard when we’re through with the crowns. Very highly recommended. He insists!!

  48. LOVE, LOVE,LOVE your new hair cut. It looks great on you. I hope you will come to like it as well.

    1. I’m sure that I will. It always takes some time to get used to new cuts. Thanks Rory!

  49. A great shampoo for gray/silver hair is Silver Expressions by Pantene. It used to be available all over and then they discontinued it. I guess there was such a hue and cry that they brought it back, but it is only available on Amazon now. I use it about twice a week. It really brightens up my hair. It leaves my ultra fine hair conditioned too, not all dried out like some purple shampoos. I like your new haircut. My hair is super fine and much thinner than yours, so I keep it in a funky pixie. I’m 75.

    1. Funky pixie sounds adorable! Thanks for the recommendation. I’ll check it out.

  50. Ditto…..
    Love the new do.
    Looks much fuller.
    Very flattering

  51. Love your hair, feel your pain about the dental work, and good for you taking up an old hobby. I used to make jewelry; still have all the beads and tools and keep thinking that soon I will take it up again. You made me think about it, so I might just have to DO IT!

  52. Jennifer, if you are getting back into your hobby of knitting, I highly recommend you check out Knitted Knockers: https://www.knittedknockers.org/. I am a member of my local group, and we knit breast prostheses for women who have had mastectomies. Many cannot wear standard silicone prostheses, because they are heavy and hot, and can be hard on tender, post-surgery skin. On their website you will find yarn recommendations, instructions (print and video), and information on how to find a local group. Like you, I love the process of knitting! I also love making a difference for women who have had mastectomies. Knitted knockers are available free of charge to those who need them. Check it out!
I love your blog – and your new hairstyle. I appreciate the search to find the right look for yourself. You will find it!

    1. Many ladies in my old knitting group were members of Knitted Knockers. Such a great organization!

  53. I love your hair style. I know it takes times to get used to a different look. I have always had thin fine hair, and now that I’m 72 I can see my scalp. I have a very similar style , just some layers and bangs. I do color my hair as I look better as a brunette, with some highlights, I can never go blonde or gray…If i can recommend a product or two. Try Color Wow Carb Cocktail, it’s a very light gel to boost roots, a little goes a long way. I think it’s on Amazon, I partially dry my hair, then rub it into my roots and the ends of my hair. Also Rusk Thicker Mousse is really terrific.. everyone’s hair responds to different products, but I swear by these two….also love your Thanksgiving outfit……

    1. Thanks, Nancy. The color WOW shine is awesome, I’ll pick up some of their Carb Cocktail (what a funny name)!

  54. I love your new haircut! Ironically, I got the very same haircut last week and think it looks good, but I’d like more volume. I have all kinds of hair products, but find that using electric rollers is the best option to add oomph to my hair. As for knitting: for years I couldn’t watch TV unless I was knitting at the same time. But after my mother’s illness & death I completely lost the knitting bug and it’s never returned. Wish it would. But I do enjoy making little felt creatures. Whatever brings you joy – do it!

    1. Thank you…so sorry about your mom. It does change everything, I know

  55. Jennifer you will find your length “sweet spot”, but a form of bob is great for for thin, fine hair. (Just make it your own.) So many of us obsess about your hair because we are on the same journey. I have a cupboard full of products that I hoped would help, but are just meh. I just discovered Dry Bar 3 in 1 finishing spray and it is a little miracle in a can for me. Does not weigh down or gummy up the hair I also find I only have to use 6 quick sprays, 3 on top, flip my hair over and 3 more sprays.

    1. I’ll try it!! Thanks

  56. I love your haircut!!! I need to tell you and probably should have sooner but I found you quite by accident while watching another youtube video and your “I have fine, thinning hair and this is how I style it” video/tutorial. You shared great ideas and it has changed how I style my hair and how I think about new products – thank you so much! I used an Aveda volumizing product for 15 years probably but it seemed to no longer give me what I need and earlier this year tried their Invati Advanced. Now I’m using the new Rodan and Fields Volume+ product line and so far so good. Interestingly both companies are owned by Estee Lauder… The other thing have done was to stop using my velcro rollers which I decided were contributing to the breakage and now use a new set of hot rollers – thank you for that change too! Anyway, the hair cut is great, mine is similar but longer. I have a round face so I need to pay attention to the length to distract from the other changes on my face! hahaha…
I’ve needlepointed for 20+ years and took it up with ferver early 2020 during the start of Covid. I continue to take Zoom classes with a nationally known teacher and have been in the same class with 7 other fabulous women. Not having a Needlepoint store closer than 2+ hours away, this has saved me. I also knitted but I wasn’t nearly as proficient as you seem to be. Happy you found it again. I love Truckee, my sister lives there and I visit often! Have a great day!

    1. I’m so glad you found us here, Leslie! Interesting about the velcro rollers because I’ve just switched to hot rollers, and hope that helps. I have a full face and square jaw, so the length of mine is really critical 🙂

  57. Love the hair a real beautiful and flattering
    improvement!

  58. Jane Anne says:

Thank you for sharing! It makes me feel less alone as a woman of a certain age 🙂 I get so much from your posts.

    1. We are all in this together! That’s one of the things I love so much about my readers…they share and are smart cookies!

  59. Great new hairstyle! I like the longer sides. I, too, have white hair which everyone likes but doesn’t want… it’s always “if only my hair was your color.” They want it to be white overnight. lol I used to have a “bob” but have decided that I like the longer sides of the bob but have kept the back quite short since I can then “fluff/buff” to get some height at the crown. Of course the hair spray I loved is no longer made so have to again use trial/error to find what will do the trick. I used a paste once/twice and didn’t like the feel. Great blog….keep writing about what we “older” ladies like to read; so informative.

  60. I need to do something with my hair and really love your new style! My hair is silver and I don’t see any yellowing. Nonetheless I use natural purple shampoo every couple of weeks or so. It doesn’t take much and you can overdo it. Remember the blue-haired ladies when we were kids? Too much blueing. I also use a biotin shampoo a couple of times a week. Love the velvet leggins!

    1. I remember the blue-haired ladies well and don’t want to be one.

  61. DeborahTX says:

I too love the new ‘do! I bought that HairMax headband when you posted it recently–I’ll comment after 6 months to see if it has made a difference. I use 5% minoxidil foam after I wash my hair–it helps but I should be applying it more frequently (I wash every other day) to meet the 2x/day expected. I’ve found Oribe dry texturizing spray ($$$) is the best for volume but I agree that too much product makes it feel sticky. Thinning hair has been a real focus for the last 10 years for me… so so frustrating!! Anyway clearly you are NOT alone!!

    1. I use the 5% Rogaine liquid morning and night, whether I wash or not. The liquid doesn’t leave a residue at all so you might try it. Here’s how I apply it

  62. Rebecca Y says:

I have a difficult time with my thinning and graying hair. The bob style is my go to and has been for many years. My stylist has curled my hair on many occasions to give a different look but somehow it never lasts! Oh well. I enjoy seeing your daily posts and love the feature of Fair Isle dresses.

  63. I used to be an obsessive knitter too and can relate… Never went anywhere without my knitting project. Used to attend the Home Sewing and Needlecraft Show every year in Toronto and came home with dozens of ideas for new projects. Can’t say why I stopped either. But like you I was inspired to start up 12 years ago when I walked past a knitting shop while on vacation, went inside, and bought the kit! I don’t have the same passion for knitting as I used to, but always have a project going and am happy with the results. By the way, I think your new do looks modern and sophisticated on you.

  64. Hi Jennifer! Love your hair by the way. I also had to shorten my style due to thinning, but in the process found lots of natural curls! I used Invisalign in my 50’s and LOVE my smile today (in my sixties). I smile every chance I get to show off my pearly whites. My dentist’s name is Dr. Comfort (that’s his real name!) and he is phenomenal. The most skilled dentist ever. Hope you enjoy your new look and the holidays.

    1. Funny you should mention Dr. Comfort…he’s my husband’s new dentist. Very nice fellow.

  65. Terry in TX says:

Jennifer, your hair is flattering but I understand quite well that it doesn’t feel like “you”! I go through the same thing. I like my hair to have some flip which I think is more youthful looking but it’s cut in a layered short bob. I’m wondering if you will continue to use your hot rollers? I’m considering the purchase. Regarding knitting, I never learned but I did sew in high school home ec and I made holiday dresses and first day of school dresses for my girls when they were young….back when I had a full head of hair! lol

    1. I used to sew a lot too!! I’m going to try my rollers on my shorter ‘do this am! Will let you know.

  66. Rhoda Clark says:

I’m all in with the ladies here, I love your new hairstyle! It looks very up to date and is very flattering on you. I too, have the thinning hair problem. Since Covid I have let it grow out, with only a few grey hairs, I’m 75, we tend to grey later in my family. But stopping the coloring/highlights has made it look even thinner and flatter.
It is so helpful to read your comments and the comments of the other ladies, I don’t feel so alone with my thinning hair.
And like someone else said, I am just happy that I still have most of my parts and most of my hair.lol

    1. I used to rely on the extra volume color gave my hair…but no more, so I must be more creative. You are definitely not alone with thinning hair.

  67. Leslie Lord says:

Your new hair style is very chic looking…you can style it straight or add volume with styling products.
I love knitting! I posted on my blog that I rarely leave a yarn shop, tea shop, or bookstore empty handed! You are in good company!
I have an amazing dentist so I understand why you drive so far to see yours…I am squeamish about dental procedures but he guides me gently through them. He’s very kind and compassionate as I assume yours is too.
    Take care Jennifer
    XO

    1. I love your Beehive yarn shop!! I always find treasures there. Knitting is just so relaxing.

  68. First off I’m loving your new hairdo which I have had similar to myself, that I found one can restyle very easily if wanting a sassy or audacious look by sweeping just one side behind the ear. On the subject of teeth is another I can relate to’ having extensive surgery done these past few years (thankfully prior to pandemic lockdowns) that also included some bone grafting. (If you had seen me I looked like I was in a bar brawl due to the latter and though there was really no pain involved, was usually wisked into the examining room rather then left in the waiting area where other patients might see me … lol!) As to hobbies I’ve had my share (sewing being my favourite and recently returned to doing charcoal portraiture) however due to lack of patience have only dabbled in knitting so admire those who do it. -Brenda-

    1. Lol!! You crack me up. I looked like the same when I had my dental implants and bone graft. Except mine were really painful. Oh, the struggle with aging teeth!

  69. I’ve had to make changes in my hair style too. It’s frustrating: I agree! I do like a shorter cut on you. Hey question on the bracelets – which colors are you wearing? It’s a fun look.

    1. I’m wearing a dark gray, black and silver. They look great stacked around your neck too 😁

      1. thank you J!

  70. Gayle Murphy says:

Your Monday morning musings are my favourite! About your fine hair, what products do you take for your hair when you are flying with carry-on only? With space limited to that tiny bag and with moisturizer and sunscreen competing for space, and containers no bigger than 100ml, I find it a challenge. At home, I use a mouse, styling wax and hair spray. I know you use a significant array of product at home. So how do you manage? And like others, I like your new haircut.

    1. I buy travel sizes and decant my hair gel so it’s tiny enough. I bring Rogaine, hair gel, dry shampoo and hairspray. Always hairspray.

  71. Catherine says:

    Love these Monday Musings.
Old hobbies: I used to scrapbook obsessively, but now it’s all done digitally, which has taken all the fun out of it.
Your hair: I like the shorter bob. I’m going to go out on a limb here, but I think you could go even shorter! You have fantastic bone structure with nice high cheekbones, and a short hairstyle (not necessarily a pixie) would look great on you. Just a thought.

    1. I did wonder about that. This feels not short and not long. I’ll see if I can work up the nerve 😁 I have broad shoulders so typically like the balance of longer hair on me.

      1. on the hairstyle. Do you know fellow fashion and life style blogger, Susan Blakey? She has fine hair and got a recent cute do.

      2. Yes, Susan and I are friends. She always looks fabulous!

  72. Hi Jennifer
I think the new bob is very flattering. You did not show a side picture, but most well cut bobs make the jawline on “older” women look better!
Re minoxidil: there is a very well written article in the New York Times: and it is free:
    https://www.nytimes.com/2022/08/18/health/minoxidil-hair-loss-pills.html
Minoxidil is a very old drug (early 1980’s) and well known for its side effect for growing hair.
It is the active ingredient in Rogaine. As the article mentions, relatively few side effects at the low dose recommended. But one should discuss it with one’s MD or dermatologist, of course.
By the way the pop up ads with video are beyond annoying, requiring stopping writing the comment and closing the ad. I am on the 6-8th time of closing the ad. The popups
are annoying and distract from the really great content of your blog (just had to close one again!) I don’t mind the “flat” ads but the videos and constant changes on the ads
makes it difficult to enjoy your excellent content.

  73. I too love your hairstyle! For a similar effect with a little edge, have you tried an asymmetrical bob? I had one for years before growing it out for my daughter’s wedding. My hair is similar–straight and thin. When Covid struck I grew it into a lob, not by choice, but I rather like it now. Between twice-weekly shampoos, I style it by pulling into a pony on top of my head and wrapping it around one or two Velcro curlers overnight. Gives me just enough body.

I did a lot to keep my teeth, after a childhood with scant visits to the dentist. Gum surgery, deep cleaning, gingival grafts, multiple fillings, and then all new fillings. Now the root canals and crowns have commenced. But I’m still chewing, so there’s that! 😉

    1. Lol, that’s looking on the bright side..still chewing 🤣 My root canal count is epic!

  74. I was also a lifetime knitter and love the feeling of the needles and yarn in my hands. I live in Florida now and knitting warm garments is not as appealing. I still have unfinished projects that I promise myself I’ll get back to “soon.” Hopefully, I will.
By the way, I love your new hairdo!

  75. I love the faire isle outfit! You look great with your new cut. I have the same problems you have with hair. My hair is fine, and it was almost shoulder length, and I had it cut last week to a chin length bob. I find it looks thicker, and easier to style. I am growing out my silver white hair with blonde dye on the ends. I alternate between clarifying shampoo, purple shampoo, and Redken Blondage Highbright shampoo to fade the new growth with the old. I like Redken for everyday, as it brightens my hair.

Sorry to hear about your teeth. You are in good hands with your dentist. So far my teeth are doing fine, but digestive issues are my problem with aging. I guess things could be worse.

Enjoy the knitting again. I used to do some crocheting, but it bothered my hand too much. I do think it is relaxing.
I have been machine quilting for several years, and joined a quilt ministry . We make lap quilts to give to people who are ill, having surgery, cancer, etc. The women are a joy to be around. I look forward to our getting together once a week .

  76. Hi Jennifer,
Your new cut is so flattering on you. I love the little bit of bang — looks so pretty. I have a bob but a lower forehead than you, so a bang like that won’t work for me.

Today I am coloring my hair for the last time — excited to go natural! I might have gotten this reference from your blog — The Gray Book group on Facebook — so inspiring and supportive, and It is fun to see all the colors and new looks on all of the ladies!

I’m right there with you on the teeth — grinding has done a job over the years. My teeth make me look and feel old. Adding more color to my wardrobe is fun and helpful to make me look better.

I need to dress semi-professionally for work, and it can be a challenge to find pretty jackets that are not black. A good source for me is thredUp, a resale clothing site. I get a cup of tea and go down the rabbit hole — but they do have excellent filters to help me search. I have gotten some really great pieces for work, and at a wonderful price.

This was such a nice post to read. Thanks for sharing your feelings. We are all in this together, aren’t we?

  77. I appreciate your sharing your issues, as telling us only the good stuff rather skews reality for your readers.

Dental issues: me too! Although I have yet to believe that I grind, most of my molars are either implants or crowns, due to cracking, one by one, during my 40’s-50’s. And chipped teeth: blame it on me for chewing on hard things.

I love your new length! The bob looks super elegant on you!

  78. Jennifer you look like a million bucks in that Thanksgiving outfit! I see I am not alone on the teeth and hair issues. As my husband and I say “we are tired of being messed with” but in the same breath so very thankful we can get the healthcare etc we need.
Can you put one side of your bob behind your ear? I am in the hair thin club and my derm gave me micro minoxidil with finesteride. I use only dropper full each night and take Nutrafol. Seems to be helping. I gave up the layers too but kept it long enough I can put it up somewhat. I enjoy your blog! Glad you found knitting again!! I hate taken up painting and it’s a lifesaver!

  79. Oh my gosh I LOVE your new haircut! It’s flattering and modern, yet classic! Very youthful!

I too have thinning hair and saw a dermatologist. He put me on low dose minoxidil and finasteride. Wow, what a difference it’s made!

I’ve been a knitter for many years but gave it up when my husband retired, we moved to a new state (leaving my knitting group behind) and family commitments took up a ton of time. I recently started up again and loving it. So relaxing.

Good luck with your dental issues!

    1. I’m going to ask my dermatologist!! I left my knitting group behind when we moved too. I miss them.

  80. Violet OBrien says:

Hi Jennifer…….You look adorable with your new hairdo! Very youthful and pretty. Sorry you’re having dental problems, however working with a dentist you trust should make it easier. Take care of yourself we are all here for you.

    1. You’re so sweet, thank you, Violet.

  81. I think this hair do is very becoming…. And a bob, to me, is less trouble than other styles. Someone told me to ask the stylist for a French Bob. Is that what your stylist calls this?

    1. French bobs are generally shorter than the jaw line, very blunt and have blunt bangs, reminiscent of the flapper cuts in the 1920s. They’re often cheek length which would feel very short on me but I never say never.

  82. Love this post. Lots to identify with, including the hair issue. I also like your haircut. My stylist likes to cut my hair short, for same reasons, but it is easier to style when a bit longer. I guess I have a bob as well. I’m still a Rogaine user after many years, and depend on it. I may look into the oral minoxidil.
Hobbies: may not he considered a hobby, but rediscovered piano lessons post retirement. My teacher says it helps keep the brain going, and hands in good shape. It takes discipline, but worth it, even though my talent is lacking.
    Best for the holiday season.

    1. I’ve relied on Rogaine for years too. Piano lessons sound fabulous! I love that idea. I was not a good piano student as a kid and we no longer have a piano.

  83. I’m smiling as I read your words….I could have written much of the same blog!!!! I have severe fear of what my dentist will find whenever I see her, I love my silver white hair but it seems more thin than yours….the style is shorter which seems to work for me. I do think your new cut is quite becoming. I use Olaplex purple shampoo a couple of times a month and other Olaplex shampoo on alternate weeks but never more than once a week. Right now I’m looking across the room at my knitting bag, unopened for a few years but recently brought out of the closet. I’ve knit off and on, but not always obsessively, since 1963….often more off than on….for detours onto cross stitch, counted cross stitch, crewel and needlepoint. I got back to knitting a couple of years ago about the same time as my shoulder started screaming at me…finally I had reverse shoulders replacement 8 months ago. I’m now pain free and wanting to give knitting another season of my life. We’ll see what happens. I have bins of to be done projects under my bed!!!!! So many of us can identify with what you’re experiencing as the years go on. Indeed, we are blessed to still be here. Happy Holidays!

    1. Wow, so happy to hear your shoulder surgery was a success. Bravo!
The number of knitting works in process in my closet is staggering. I may never finish them. I’m looking at them wondering why I ever wanted to make them.

  84. I am lucky to have any teeth! My parents did not take us to the dentist—the first time I saw a dentist was when I got my first job at age 19. My teeth are in great shame, I only have one crown. Your haircut—I love it! That style looks great on you! My hair is thinning but just on top and in the crown. The dermatologist explained it’s just like how a man goes bald. same area. That somehow was not reassuring!!! I use either a gel to use on my entire head or just a thickening spray on the top. It does work. email me if you want the name.

    1. Women do get male pattern balding. That’s one reason I use Rogaine every day. The mens 5%!

  85. I love LOVE your new haircut!! Your hair looks thicker, the style frames your face beautifully, and it’s a classic but modern look. Kudos to your stylist!

    1. It does look thicker which was our goal. Thank you!

  86. Your new hair style is very becoming on you. I think it looks a bit sassy. I found that when I quit coloring my hair, it stopped falling out. I think keeping it a bit shorter helps my hair look fuller. My hair style is a lot like yours but without the bangs. I do not want my hair to look “fixed”.
Also I know exactly what you mean about the dentist. I have a mouth guard to wear at night because of my teeth grinding.
    Love your Monday musings.

  87. I actually love your new haircut! Color is a challenge. Mine is gray/white but I have a recent tendency to yellow. My stylist has suggested platinum highlights but that seems to contradict the whole idea of low maintenance. Still deciding! And teeth! I feel you. My bottom teeth are re-crowding after an extraction and braces thirty years ago when I was in my thirties, and my teeth have never been very white. It takes a lot of work just to fend off gum disease. The joys-hah-of aging!

    1. Mine suggested silver highlights but that’s not going natural, so I’m waiting it out.

  88. I think your new haircut is really attractive on you! I also think it makes you look younger, but that’s just my opinion. We have to wear what each of us is most comfortable with. Also loved that red, black and white outfit! Looks very comfortable while being very stylish.

    1. It’s the only red I own, funny enough. This is the only time of year I wear it.

  89. Melinda Beckett says:

Good morning, Jennifer. Thank you for sharing with us. No, I don’t knit, but I definitely understand your problems with your teeth. I had miserable experiences in my youth in the dental chair and spent time getting a bridge and several expensive crowns. After a painful experience with my gums, I do floss regularly and keep up with the latest on electric toothbrushes. Hey! Your hair cut is flattering and I do like that lipstick color. Have a great week. I enjoy reading your posts😍

  90. pat nelson says:

I just love your hair.. I too have very fine and thin hair, and i also wear it this way…

  91. What a timely post for so many of us. First, love every detail of the outfit you featured.
My teeth have always required extra attention. Our smiles say so much about us!
I do crochet but never learned to knit. So, I just purchased a small knitting loom that so many people are using to produce gorgeous hats, scarves and ….
And now, this whole issue of our thinning hair. I still color my hair and wear it longer these days. I do have bangs also. I have read many articles about styling your bangs in a more modern way. They emphasize that there should be no lift at the root and you dry them first brushing one way and then brushing the other way. It seems to make a difference for me. My goal is to have a more natural style with movement.
You have always been able to style your hair in a modern style that appears less structured. Just stay true to your personal instincts!

    1. That’s interesting about bangs. I’ll have to read more about that way if styling them. My forehead is huge so I’ve always worn them.

  92. I really love your new haircut, it looks so much fuller to me. I have thick and coarse hair but it has changed so much the older I am getting, I am 72. It is medium length and needs a cut or something but I don’t know what I want. My hair has turned dry and frizzy and I can tell it is thinning out which I hate. Everybody thinks that the older women should go short and wear it frumpy but not every woman wants that. I maybe 72 but I do not want to be frumpy, clothes, shoes or hair.

    1. We don’t want to look frumpy!! Check Pinterest for some style ideas. Then ask women whose hair you like, who cuts their hair.

  93. I am also a knitter and find that, like you, knitting is calming and meditative. I’d love to see what you’re knitting. You needles are beautiful!

    1. Just a scarf in a simple 4 row repeat. Hopefully I bought enough yarn to make it long enough to be a scarf and not a placemat. 🤣

  94. Mihaela Eftimescu says:

    Hello, Jennifer !
There is a procedure which coats the teeth in zirconia and you can no longer grind them; it was successful for my son, our dentist got a diploma in Italy for this 3 steps procedure ( approx.5000€)
For me 6 implants in these 2 years are enough for the time being, but all my life I had problems though I tried to take care of teeth and the dentist is the most important thing, if you found him, stick to him like glue, ni matter the roads.
I was wondering if you can tuck your hair at the back in some kind of bun or loop of hair, because I saw some of your photos wearing a robe, and you look so younger!
Think about it ! Don t worry you look beautiful, anyway, especially that you are not subject to overwight, which so manyof us are, at this age and this impacts our lives so much.
Hobbies, yes, I used to knit or sew when I was young and enthusiastic, which I m not, anymore, but maybe, ifcI think better…
    Best !
    Mihaela

  95. New hairdo is stunning!

  96. Well, Jennifer, the jury’s in and your new haircut is a winner. It frames your face nicely and looks stylish. Bet it has nice movement, as well. Since the style works well with your hair texture and fullness, here’s hoping you grow to enjoy the change. I feel it looks lovely on you!

  97. I was SO excited to see your new do! You look fabulous! I think your hair looks fuller, and in my opinion, you look younger. Very classy. I am 65 with thinning gray hair. I have a short pixie. When I add a texturizer I look a bit sassy which is fun. Thank you for being an inspiration to your many followers.

  98. Good morning Jennifer ! I do like your hairstyle too! It looks to be a versatile cut where it could be flipped up a bit, on the ends, if you grew tired of the straighter bob? Abd I love the Tahoe outfit!
On knitting- Ihave friends who were obsessive knitters until extreme arthritis set in. Now it’s limited. I never learned to knit. My mom never knitted but did sew, and busied herself with baking (her passion)
, piano practice and collecting antiques. Happy Monday!

  99. This is getting repetitive, but I would like to join the chorus to say that your new hairstyle looks great on you! It flatters your face and seems fuller than the other hairstyle. As for hobbies, I could never manage the skills needed to be a successful knitter. So I learned to crochet at an early age. So much simpler and the same fun. But these days I play MahJongg as a hobby. I play MJ with friends several times a week and play online MJ almost every night before I go to sleep. It is a relaxing and addictive game!

  100. Love your hair! You look beautiful as always.

  101. We are always more critical of ourselves than anyone else. Your hairstyle is fabulous IMHO so I’m hoping that after reading all the comments saying the same, you’ll grow to like it. You shared more personal thoughts today than ever before and I feel like I know you a bit better now. Keep up the informative posts. You are appreciated!

  102. I saw your outfit with the Fair Isle sweater dress and velvet leggings on Cyber Monday and immediately ordered it. I love that the sweater is 55% cotton and machine washable too! I don’t enjoy high maintenance clothes! Your hair looks great! I had to swallow that same pill a few years back. Now I really enjoy having an easier style to take care of

    1. It’s a fun outfit for sure. I enjoy wearing it.

  103. I am one of the people who like your new haircut. I have the thinning problem with my hair. Several places look so thin it’s embarassing. I also am not good with styling my hair so that it looks best. Your new haircut makes your hair seem thicker too. I’m interested in paste too. Could you maybe do a piece on it?
I used to knit a lot but had to quit due to arthritis in my hands. Knitting just made it worse and I was unable to keep the tension I needed to create a good product.

  104. I also love your new do! My thinning hair may be convinced to try that which I have avoided. Perfect length. I also heard you re: knitting. I am trying to finish a long term needlepoint piece first, but the needles may a show up soon. Based on the picture, you picked it up just like riding a bike! You always energize my day! Be Well!

  105. Jennifer I really like your new style too. It is very flattering and youthful. I find new hair styles traumatic so I feel your pain. I have a “vision” of what I think looks good on me and I won’t budge on a few criteria. I have to have bangs because I think my forehead (with it’s widows peak) is too large, and I want layers. I’m between stylists right now so I’m just growing it out until the shorter pieces in the back allow me to clip it up. I call this my hair crisis phase. I keep looking for style ideas for my next cut and every single one that meets all my criteria happens to be on Jane Fonda. Hair cuts and coloring are too expensive for us not to be pleased with the outcome. Yours really is cute.

    1. I seldom like a new style so I shouldn’t be surprised.

  106. Love your hair. And totally understand about the dentist. Once you find a good one, it’s hard to trust a new one. I played flute throughout school and college and then stopped. Life got in the way. In 2019 I decided to take up an instrument. I chose the oboe and have been playing and taking lessons ever since. I was 68 when I took it up, arthritic hands, macular degeneration, and all! Good luck with knitting and don’t give it up. Wish I knew how to. I think I would find it meditative as well.

  107. Jane Ladell says:

Your new cut looks really cute on you! I have worn a pixie cut for a few years due to thin hair and in the process of growing it out to a bob. I don’t know if I can make it before it drives me crazy and I go back to a pixie. I use Hair Biology purple shampoo from Target almost every day. It really helps from getting some yellow streaks out of my white hair.

  108. Todays post was spot on for me! I have been thinking lately how much I love Fair Isles and should really make use of the Talbots coupons and treat myself! My hair is nearly identical to yours – I wore it short for years and have now grown it out – it’s about the length yours was before your cut . My family loves it grown out and although I trust my stylist I am still on the fence – so afraid it makes me look drab and dowdy! As for hobbies – the one I want to pick back up is cross stitch – I just have to get a magnifying lamp – my eyes aren’t as sharp as they used to be!
Cheers to a fabulous week !

  109. I also had been a knitter for many years, and found I had to quit due to arthritis plus neuropathy in my fingertips. It was painful to knit because the repetitive movement made my fingers go so numb. I don’t think I can go back and I do miss it and all the friends in my knitting group. I do love your haircut and may ask my hairstylist to try it on me as I have thin hair, too. Right now I do long layers. I bought the volume rollers, but hard to use with my arthritic fingers.

    1. Oh my gosh, Jennifer, your post resonates deeply with me. Same issues with my teeth at this stage—so frustrating. Same hairstyle for the same reason—thinning hair—but I love that look on me: I call it Art Deco, similar to Erté paintings and the stylish women of the Roaring Twenties. I think this style looks even prettier on you! And I’m returning (soon after the holidays) to embroidery, which I enjoyed as a teen. Thanks, Jennifer. As always, I love your posts!

  110. Your hair always looks great, but I know the struggle of thinning hair…I have a few spots that I can really notice it. One product I love is Aveda Pure Abundance Style Prep. It’s less aggressive than their “thickening” product, but gives me some extra volume and makes my hair last a couple days. I do use purple shampoo about once/week.

Teeth are another (frustrating) story as we age. But I’m glad to still have mine and wear a bite splint nightly, as I’m a horrid grinder. 😊

    Love the outfit in Tahoe.

  111. Well Jennifer, you are going to get tired of hearing this, but I like your new hairstyle too!! I also want to know about paste. I have really fine hair and have to be careful with products because they weigh down my hair. I have found a couple of volume sprays that work ok, but too much of anything makes my hair feel yucky. I am sure you already know about this, but just in case, I find that biotin really helps my hair. I take a tablet daily and my hair is stronger and thicker and my nails are better. Knitting! I have a long history as well. Probably not as proficient as yours, but a love affair for sure. But my knitting has fallen to the wayside in favor of other hobbies. I have been thinking about starting it up again for a few reasons. It is so easy to pick up and put down, it is meditative, it’s portable and you can do it anywhere. Yippee. I may just be inspired. Thank you!!!

    1. Love your hair cut, yes to much purple shampoo can’t affect the hair color, should only use it once a week at the most or every other week. I feel for you at dentist, I don’t like them and haven’t found one I can trust in years. I’ve tried knitting but it’s a mess.

  112. Angela Pea says:

Obsessive Knitter…..Absolutely! I love how it calms my monkey mind and making things is totally my jam. I wish I lived somewhere cooler where hand knit sweaters can be worn comfortably more than a few weeks out of the year!

  113. You hair is adorable! Very very becoming. My hair has been white for 15 years, my teeth are a mess and expensive too and I knit allllll the time. My mother tried to teach me in my youth but an innovative shop in our area named Loops (great website btw) and all the wonderful circular needles with interchangeable tips, etc. did the trick and now I am addicted! Something is cast one them (or several somethings🤠) all the time!

    1. I have a set of those interchangeable tips in ebony. I love them. I’m not even finished this scarf and want to cast on something else. I love the excited, hopefully feeling of casting on. It is addicting.

  114. Love the new do! Looks great on you!

  115. Your new cut is flattering! Give it time to grow on you. 😉

    1. That’s what I need to do. 😁Thanks

  116. Your new hairstyle looks great! Always enjoy your posts.

  117. I’m with all those above who love your new hairstyle. I, too, have the thinning hair problem and have been too embarrassed to go to a salon since covid hair grow out. I thought I was the only one. Maybe I’ll venture to a salon with a picture of your “do” and try it. Thanks to you and all who chimed in on hair thinning. BTW, my daughter, who is a nurse practioner, encourages me to keep knitting to keep fingers nimble and, hopefully, arthritis at bay.

    1. You are far from alone. Thinning hair really beats up our confidence, but don’t let it!! Go to the salon. You’ll be so happy you did.

  118. Love your new style. It looks fuller too! I also have a bobish style. Many women of a certain age cut their hair short, though I love short styles, I prefer a more flowing style and a bob will do that. Enjoy your new cut…remember it takes at least two weeks to fully be one with your hair! Happy Holidays!

    1. Happy holidays! I never heard that it takes two weeks, but I think you’re right!

  119. Jennifer, your hair looks great on you. And I love the lipstick. What color and brand? Gosh, I’m sorry you have to go through the hours in the dental chair but at least you have teeth! ;0)

    1. Great point! Most have “help” or are implants but they don’t come out at night 😁 I’m just wearing this lip pencil. Lipstick seems to stick to my temporary crown so I’m just wearing pencils these days.

  120. I LOVE your new haircut! It looks so flattering and on you. Yes to the new do😉

  121. Deborah H says:

I love your new haircut. I too have fine thinning hair and am always looking for a new look. I actually approached a woman in the grocery store parking lot to ask about their hair and permission to take a photo of the back of it. My stylist always keeps my hair about collar length and recommends only washing it every 4-5 days. I didn’t think I could do it, but surprisingly it worked and now my hair is a lot healthier looking.

  122. Pat Patterson says:

    Good morning Jen,
I also like your new bob and hair color. I have had a bob on and off for years, it seems to be the mainstay hair style here on the northeast coast of the US.
Wear it proud, you are a beautiful lady and I look forward to your post and the responses from the other ladies
    Have a great day everyone!

    1. Thanks Pat. You have a great day too

  123. I like the hair style, but I know how you feel. It’s YOU that needs to like it. I’m a failed knitter, but I used to be a demon at embroidery. I’ve been trying to take it up again, but I get distracted by stupid social media. I think t’s time to put my iPad down and pick up my hoop and needle.

    1. That darn social media! And when you’re done with it you have nothing to show for your time!

  124. Your hair looks fantastic and frames your face nicely. Classy!

  125. I think your hair looks great. It looks so fresh and modern. My hair is thinning also. I’m not going to complain too much because my 40 yr old daughter is losing hers due to lupus.

    1. I’m so sorry to hear about your daughter, Linda. Sending lots of prayers her way!

  126. Hi Jennifer,
I also love the new hairstyle. I’d also like to see a post about caring for “silver” hair and various purple shampoos. Actually, I had stopped coloring my hair right before COVID and I am mostly “silver”. I started having my stylist put a purple streak about 2 inches wide on each side of my part. My grand-daughters love it so I try to keep that streak up.
I bounce between regular shampoo and purple shampoo, but I’d love to see you do a trial run of various shampoos for gray/silver hair. Have a great day.
    Lottie

    1. Your purple stripes sounds so fun!!! I’ll be checking into so shampoos for us.

  127. Cheryl Spratt says:

I love your new hair style. I had the same issues a few years back and now wear a pixie cut. I only use the purple shampoo once a week and my hair is all gray now. Give it a chance. It looks much fuller.

    1. It does look fuller and that was the goal. Thanks

  128. Ha! We all love your new ‘do except you. Very flattering. I’ve just begun taking low dose oral Minoxidil for my thinning hair and hope to see a difference in six months. If it helps, it’ll be a lifelong commitment but it’s very inexpensive and much easier than applying it topically..

    1. I didn’t know that even existed. Checking into it more now!! Thank you.

  129. Love, love, love your new hairstyle! Maybe leave it for a bit longer and it will grown on you? It really is so pretty!

    1. I think you’re right!! It’s the shock of being short. Luckily it’ll grow 😁

  130. Jennifer, I love your hairstyle! My hair is thinning like crazy; I’m thinking of trying this look! Best of success with your dental issues; I feel your pain!

    1. I’m sorry your hair is thinning too. It’s the pits.

  131. Well, you may not want to hear, but I really like your new haircut. My friend has really thin hair and the only thing she can do is a short pixie, which does look great. I am having to adjust mine each time also as it is getting thinner all the time.
If that is the colour of your yarn, I love it, and good luck with your new project.
Teeth and ageing… all I can say is I hate it. Love your personal musings.

    1. It does always seem to be something but teeth are the pits.

  132. I also have a bob but have thick hair, platinum gray now. I receive at least 3 comments a month from strangers and several have asked if they could take a picture of the cut–go figure. My stylist instructed me only use the purple shampoo about every 3rd washing and shampoo my hair about every 5-6 days, which helps with hair loss. I have been experimenting with dry shampoo on those last few days, which gives the style a more tousled look. My friends say they could not possibly go that long without shampooing but it really does work. Dental work — ugh, as I seem to be spending more time with my dentist each year.

    1. Love your new haircut. Also love your blog!

    2. I’m a huge fan of dry shampoo. It adds tons of body to my hair.

  133. Love the hair; youthful!

  134. Jennifer,
I think your new cut looks great! It frames your face and has a very flattering current look.
As an aside, I also made a two hour trip to keep my dentist and only recently switched to one closer when he retired!

  135. I like your hair cut will watch to see how you style it differently.
My hobby is knitting, love to create using those needles. I had stopped for a while but once I retired I picked them back up. Enjoy knitting again

  136. I also have your type of hair and I love this style on you

  137. I love your new haircut/style.

  138. I really like your new hairstyle Jennifer – it’s fresh and modern and really suits you. As for purple shampoo, I’ve been doing some searching to find out when and how often to use and which ones are the best. I haven’t needed to buy one yet as my hair is still brilliant white and I have only started to use a hair dryer again ( I let it air dry until recently) so I don’t have any yellowing from heat products.
Perhaps a post on how to care for silver hair would be beneficial for all of us. I’m sure there would be lots of great suggestions from your followers.

    1. I LOVE your hair Yvonne. It’s fabulous. Great idea for a post I need to study purple shampoos more thoroughly.

  139. I, too, have your hair. I like the new cut. But, What is paste for the hair? I might need it also.

    1. She used a mens paste at the roots to “add body”. It felt gummy. I haven’t bought any but I think I will to try.

  140. Love your haircut. It’s very flattering. My hair gets thinner as the years go by. I have a similar haircut and everyone likes it. Maybe you just need time to adjust as I did. I love the purple shampoo. I don’t use it every time but it makes my hair look fresh, not drab and boring. The bob looks great in my opinion.

    1. Thinning hair is no fun. Coloring it always gave it a boost so that’s part of my struggle now too.
