The Best Sundresses for Mature Women

There was a time when I assumed my sundress days were behind me. But like so many style rules we were once told to follow, that idea belongs in the donation bin. These days, I’ve come to appreciate just how effortlessly chic and practical a sundress can be…especially in the summer heat. They’re the ultimate one-and-done outfit that’s cool, comfortable, and surprisingly polished when you find the right one.

The key is in the details. I look for sundresses with just the right amount of coverage, made from breathable fabrics that skim the body without clinging or overwhelming. Nothing too fussy, just easy elegance that feels good to wear and looks pulled together without trying too hard.

If you’ve been wondering if sundresses still have a place in your wardrobe, the answer is absolutely yes. Here are a few stylish options that I think are perfect for women who want comfort, confidence, and timeless summer style.

WHITE BUBBLE DRESS / BASKET BAG / WEDGE SANDALS

This white cotton shirtdress is equal parts playful and polished, which is my favorite kind of balance. The collared neckline and button-front placket lend it just enough structure to feel intentional, while the wide bubble hem adds a soft, modern twist, making it a classic shirt dress with a touch of personality.

The fabric blend has a hint of stretch, so it moves with you, not against you. It’s fully lined so I can forgo a slip…plus it has sleeves and pockets, which I always appreciate.

My Favorite “Sundresses”

SHORT SLEEVE FLORAL KNEE LENGTH DRESS WITH POCKETS size M

I’ve shared this affordable blue dress before, and I don’t think you would ever guess it came from Amazon. I dressed it up with a pair of low-block heels, making it appropriate for a wedding, shower, graduation, dinner, and so much more. This print is called ‘Floral16’, although you can find it in many other colors and patterns. S-3X.

LINEN SHORT DRESS size S (in white) / SANDALS

I’m a big fan of shirtdresses, which I consider a type of sundress in my wardrobe. This navy linen dress is from last year, and F&E has it in white this season.

QUINCE COTTON GAUZE DRESS / NAOT SANDALS / SIMILAR BAG / EARRINGS /
SIMILAR NECKLACE / SIMILAR SCARF

This Quince Gauze Dress is everything I want on a warm day. It’s easy, breathable, and quietly elegant without trying too hard. This is made from 100% organic cotton, which already feels like a win, but the real magic is in the double-knit gauze. Soft, airy, and just structured enough to drape beautifully without clinging.

The V-neck in both the front and back adds a touch of femininity without being too bare, and the flowy, relaxed fit means I don’t have to think twice about comfort. The Vintage Cream and Bayside Stripe versions are both fully lined in cotton, so there’s no need to fuss with slips or layering. It’s the kind of piece you’ll reach for again and again, whether you’re padding around barefoot at home or heading out in flat sandals and silver hoops.

I think I am in love with that blue dress from Amazon.

  2. Hmmmm, I’m wondering….I have slips from years ago; would I consider wearing one under these longer linen dresses? What does one wear nowadays under the long dresses???? Obviously I’m an “older” person asking a question such as this.

    1. I wear my knee length slips under m ost of my skirts and dresses

  3. I just received the solstice midi dress from JJill and I love it. The fit is so flattering, and I’m happy that it made your list! I think I will try out the Amazon dress; it’s very pretty on you.

  4. I bought the faux wrap knee-length dress in navy for travel last year and it was a winner! Worked with sandals, some jewellery and a clutch for a nice patio dinner and it worked equally well the day with sneakers and a tote for the market. It washed out in the sink easily and dried overnight. Highly recommend! The red print that you show is cute and *might* have to come with me this fall to Italy.

  5. Jennifer,
TGIF, indeed. You deserve some R and R!

If I may ask a question unrelated to dresses, I’d like to know about sizing for the
F & E Dublin blazer vs the Mini Belfast. It looks like the blazer is more fitted. Did you size up?

Thanks for all you do. I look forward to seeing you in my inbox!

    Linda

    1. The Dublin is much for fitted and is not intended to close all the way in the front. I did not size up because the small fits across the shoulders and across my back. The Belfast is quite loose in the mini version and the full length

  6. I still love your dark blue green crushed silk tired EF dress! The JJill knock off in cerise is pretty but I couldn’t wear that color. I do have a couple of the knit sleeveless pullover dresses which will be handy when we get those 95-100 degree summer temperatures. That is hard to believe because I’m looking out my windows at a snow globe world. Big fat fluffy flakes have been falling for hours on my pink blossom tree. It is spring in the Rockies so we never know what we will get. Enjoy your downtime this weekend and your new book. Thank you for the recommendation! It sounds like your husband is doing quite well if he is getting into trouble already. Brent is doing well also from his first cataract surgery and has the other eye done next Friday.

    1. It’s hard to believe it’s still snowing. We have warm sunny weather

  7. Some of these dresses don’t fit my definition of a sundress, but I appreciate that there are many opinions of what exactly makes a dress a sundress! I purchased the Marine Layer one in black & white and love it. Perfect for hot summer days and for our Caribbean vacation.

  8. I like a casual sundress for summer but I only have a few. I would like to find a long one and these are really cute. Enjoy your weekend with your book 🌼

    1. Have a wonderful weekend Rosemary!

  9. Being a caregiver is so exhausting and even when “sleeping” your brain is still awake and aware. Oh, my gosh! First Lie Wins was so good! I will definitely be getting her new book. I love sundresses in the summer, so easy breezy. I am looking at a maxi sundress. Thanks for sharing some cute options.

    1. Yes! And when I run errands I worry about rushing back because his phone has been acting up.

  10. That Amazon blue print dress has been one of your best recommendations for me! The fabric is nice and it washes well. I’ve ordered it in black and another pattern. The faux wrap is a great style for my short waisted busty body type. Note I did size up. I’m planning to get them shortened just a bit as they hit me at an awkward place between knee and midi lengths (I’m 5’3”).

    1. It’s such a great little dress, I agree

  11. Christine Arquilla says:

Thank you for all the recommendations. I’m getting ready to buy a few summer dresses in my new (smaller!) size so the timing of your post was just perfect! Enjoy relaxing this weekend. You deserve it!

    1. Congratulations on your new size. You’re beautiful at every and any size but it’s fun to buy new clothes.

  12. Gay Manning says:

    Nice looks! Happy Easter 🐣

  13. Thank you for sharing a good variety of sundresses. As a petite, I don’t wear maxi length, but knee length is just right. The one and done for dresses is a good rule.
