Weekend Reading: 05.31.25
Happy weekend, ladies. I’ve been missing in action more than usual this week because, frankly, I’m exhausted. I hope a nice relaxing weekend will restore my energy.
I’ve also pulled way back on my Instagram posting as well because the churn has been wearing me out. The message used to be, “Here’s what I love and why I wear it”. Now it’s, “Here’s what to buy before it sells out”. And while we are on the subject…when did needing to own something because all the “cool girls” are wearing it become a thing? Seriously, influencers in their 50s are using this messaging! I’m not a girl…I don’t want to look like everyone else, and I find this kind of message to be the death knell of personal style.
I’ll have to return to the platform because my business demands a social media presence, but I plan to be very careful because I want the experience to enrich me rather than make me feel lacking.
Fashion On My Radar…not a cool-girl in sight 😉
- I’ve worn my old Eileen Fisher shirtdress twice in as many weeks and predict I’ll wear it a lot more this summer. (this one is similar, but mine has a collar). That means I need a comfy sandal to wear with it that’s not dorky, so the hunt is on. This Pixie is in the running, as is this Gabor. Both have a tiny wedge and a feminine vibe.

- I pulled out my oversized resin/lucite link necklace yesterday and loved it! It’s a perfect weight for summer and added a fun touch to my look. Mine is from Talbots several years ago but lots of brands make similar. I’m now on the hunt for a bracelet in other colors. I adore this bangle in charcoal, but my hands are too large to go through most, so I’d prefer a hinged one or a chain that I can open and close. All ideas welcome!
- I still have my eye on this casual cotton dress with sleeves. I hestitated long enough that my size is now sold out in blue, so I ordered the black.
Your Favorite Bestsellers
- This pretty stripped neck sweater with a coastal vibe was very popular this week.
- My Brigitte wide-leg pants were also a big hit. Mine weren’t ready to pack when we left for Vancouver, so they’re still in California and I miss how comfy and polished they are.
- I lot of readers also loved this striped maxi from J.Crew Factory.
- This brow gel was one of the most popular items this week and I know you will love it as much as I do!
- Quite a few of you also took advantage of the sale on my beautiful blue EF cotton sweater.
Spotted on sale
Nordstrom Half-Yearly sale is still on and has some great things left to shop. I assume they are clearing out for the Anniversary sale which will be here before we know it. Here are some accessories I spotted:
J. McLaughlin’s Spring sale is on with up to 50% off. This classic shirtdress is included and it has sleeves! You may see a trend for me…I am on the hunt for dresses with sleeves.
DSW has BOGO (buy one get one) 40% off summer sandals, which is a great time to replace sandals that got worn out last summer.
Thanks for reading, and do something wonderful for yourself this weekend.

Get well rested Jennifer. Thank you for telling us you get tired. Many people slog on and sometimes make the rest of us feel like sloths. 🤣😳 Your comments are helpful.
I love your lipstick and necklace. I’m on the hunt! I think the dress in blue will look great on you. Maybe better than black.
Hugs
If Thai black is too large, I’ll replace with blue but I didn’t want it too snug
Your comment about your bangs made me laugh. One month I could not wait for my appointment and trimmed my own bangs, I THOUGHT I had done a great job and my hairdresser wouldn’t be able to tell. HA! As soon as I sat in the chair she said – “Ahhh, I see what you did there” I WAS CAUGHT. I started busting up laughing and admitted that I couldn’t wait for my appointment. My hairdresser is so friendly she forgave me for hacking away at my own hair. I have to admit though that sometimes you just have to do it!
Lol!! It’s an uncontrollable urge sometimes.
Jennifer, I so look forward to your posts. The details and personal perspective that you include are
Informative and fun to read. I have learned a great deal from you. Hope that your day is lovely and peaceful. Kathy
Have a great weekend
Jennifer, I completely agree and respect your feelings on fashion, social media, etc. Thank you. Have a lovely week.
Love your hair, the previous style was dated…
Hi Jennifer,
Your comment about your disastrous experience with short bangs resonated with me! I had similar experience that was definitely my first ever “fashion disaster” as a little girl!
Me too, along with the Toni perms 😆
Jennifer, I chuckled at your sharing that you cut your own bangs. I also have bangs and frequently have to do a little snip between salon visits. I’ve actually gotten pretty good at it! The trip is to hold the scissors vertically and just cut up into the hair. Voila…wisps! If I may make a comment about your Insta presence – I find that if I read the blog (which I manage to do most days) then the daily Insta is somewhat redundant. As far as what the “cool” girls are wearing, at 73 I’m way beyond that! I know what the younger cool girls are wearing because I observe my daughter, but those items are many times too young for me. Be secure in your personal style and you can’t go wrong. Have a great and restful weekend!
Thank you Maria! I’d much prefer to hone my personal style than copy. Inspiration is great and I love it but not when it confuses the issue, so I have to limit my exposure.
Hi Jennifer. I have followed and enjoyed you for quite a while but have been quiet. I wanted to tell you that your recent posts have brought me much joy. I love your new attitude! I feel the same way. I think you did a great job on your bangs. It makes your hair look fresh and youthful. One last thing, I also have very dry eyes and have struggled for many years with this. I see a cornea specialist regularly who prescribed autologous serum tears. It’s a process but has been well worth it. You might want to do some research on it. Thanks for everything you do for us!
Thank you so much for letting me know, Debra!
Hi Jennifer,
You might like the Taos Sideways sandal. I saw it on my daughter-in-law and ended up buying it for myself. It looks a little clunky but once on the foot has a cool vibe.
I’m know it’s hard to find comfortable shoes that are fashionable.
Thanks Sally! I’ll check them out.
Good morning Jennifer,
Get some rest this weekend! It’s so important for our health. I think your hair looks cute, self cropped bangs and all. I put together a long post about travel clothing and the site crashed so I didn’t have the energy to do it all again! Stay well, Amy
Ah, that’s what happened to me Friday and I was just too tired to keep working on it!
Jennifer, I wish you a restful weekend because it is no fun feeling tired. Are you eating enough protein? Lately I have been paying attention to the amount of protein I eat (because I love carbs above all else!). It was a surprise to me to learn that protein in my diet was not nearly enough. So I am making an effort to eat more egg whites, peanut butter, and meat.
As for fashion, developing personal style instead of following the crowd is what I aspire to. Yes, I like knowing about trends, but I pick and choose what to add to my wardrobe based on what I like, what looks good on me, and what feels comfortable to wear. At my age, I deserve no less!
I am trying to ensure I get more protein too. It’s not easy because I’m just not that hungry 😉
Jennifer, take care and take a good long rest
I have that blue necklace from Talbots, I wore it in a fashion show at my local Talbots, fun summer piece.
Namaste’
Have a great weekend!
Jennifer,
Just my thoughts on your sandal choices. I love the Gabor sandal! It looks so soft and comfy! I think it has a sophisticated and versatile style that can complement any casual or dressy look.
I really like it too. It also looks supporting and comfy.
Good Morning Jennifer: I love that black Pippa Dress!
Isn’t it cute? I’ll share when it arrives.
A friend recently recommended shoes from The Charleston Shoe Company. They come in a variety of wedge height, and are very comfortable.
Thanks! I’ll check them out.
I always enjoy your posts
Thanks for being here Mary.
Hi
Have you read Pretty Things? One of the characters is a social influencer. I found the story line interesting. Personally I pretty much just do email and YouTube videos. Thanks for your hard work.
That looks like a fun book. I’ll see if the library has it.
I think royal purple looks wonderful with silver hair, but I have a difficult time finding that color. The fashion world should note that we ladies of a certain age are entitled to royal colors!!
We are all royalty!
Jennifer, what size did you get in the EF cotton sweater-it says it runs large, as most EF tends to do. Did you size down one or two sizes?
I have a small in their linen dresses. They do run large.
Thanks for showing us the J Crew Factory sweater tank last week. I’ve been looking for something like that. I ordered two and they are just what I need. The bonus is that the cerise matches a J Jill linen cardi from a few years ago to make a great twin set and the ivory is a useful neutral.
Yay! That’s a win/win.
