A Newsy Post

Happy Friday, ladies. Today is just a newsy post with lots of random bits and bobs that may ramble a bit.

woman sitting in car

I got a driveby Covid test this week, which was negative. I’d been having headaches for a few days and had an appointment to get my hair cut and because my stylist has just had her baby, I knew she hadn’t had the vaccine. I figured I’d just get the test to be safe. Turns out, the baby was there and no one was wearing a mask. No. One.

By the time I woke up the next day, much of what was on my Nordstrom wish list was sold out. That’s not surprising and I know many people are dealing with this. The best selections are and will always be online, but sometimes a gal just likes to shop in the store. So that’s what I did.

woman walking in green dress

I popped on this tee shirt dress from Gap, slipped into some comfy slides, and decided a belt was in order. I like to belt T-dresses and still haven’t found a light-colored one I like so I tossed on this old brown one which looks too visually heavy to me.

I bought this one at a tiny boutique in Aix-en-Provence many years ago. I’ve always liked its shape because it gives me the illusion of a waist where I have none. When I did an online hunt for a lighter one, I was surprised to find them listed as “vintage”. Hmm…I thought vintage meant over 100 years old. Of course, if we split hairs, I’m not middle age either because I don’t expect to live to 130.

I’m sorry to admit this trip was just for me… so I hope to get back today and do a try-on session for you..she says sheepishly. I bought this Barefoot Dreams Circle sweater because the color was so pretty. I had a lilac one many years ago which I wore threadbare so was delighted to find this one. This comes in 6 colors, sizes XS, M, or XL. I bought a medium so it was nice and roomy. A reader asked me to try on this straight-front version, which I preferred, but it didn’t come in this pretty green.

What came home with me

My first stop at the mall was actually Aveda. I was on the hunt for lipstick and had forgotten how lovely theirs are. I bought this Mulberry and Kimi Fig which is a warm pink with gold shimmer. They’re a long-wearing lipstick with nourishing certified organic cupuaçu fruit butter and botanical oils…plus it has a refreshing organic peppermint, vanilla, and ginger aroma which tastes like peppermint.Aveda lipstick

I love these so much I will be experimenting with lots more of their colors!

I also went to the hand Dr this week for 2 more steroid shots in my middle trigger fingers. He said those were the last we could try and that I needed to schedule surgery for later this fall. I’d been hoping to avoid that, but the verdict is clear, we can’t fix this without a cut and snip. I’ve had enough second, third, and fourth opinions that I trust this surgeon. I also saw a neurosurgeon this week whose verdict is that I do not need spine surgery. Whew…sometimes it feels like my body is being kept together with rubber bands and bubblegum:)

The Over 50 Style Team is off this week but we will be back next week.

Have a great one ladies and remember to wear what makes you feel confident.

The Henley t-shirt dress is and the circle sweater looks very comfortable which is what like when the weather cools down in late summer/early fall. Your “vintage” belt is gorgeous and does give a waistline so I would hang on to it and give it a nice buff and polish so it stays that way. Accessories can make or break an outfit. I agree a tan color would be better for to T/S dress.
Velcro rollers are one of my tricks for fuller hair since mine really needs it! Aging is no fun and requires many more steps getting ready each day for me. I will check out the Aveda lipsticks. Very pretty.
Glad you didn’t need the back surgery and your hand can be corrected.

The smoke from wildfires is bad here, and that is causing breathing difficulties and headaches for many people. Fire bans include BBQ briquettes now.

Poor babies can’t be vaccinated, nor any child under 12. I appreciate your effort to look out for those who have no Covid protection. I’m fully vaccinated and still masking up everywhere I go, because I am visiting an immune-compromised elderly person (also fully-vaccinated, but…those variants.

Masking up also helps outdoors in this smoke and haze. Campfire smell everywhere now.

Sorry to hear about your trigger finger.
My husband had surgery a few years ago and all went very well. He was back to normal very quickly.
If I remember correctly, he had a very large bandage the first day (only for protection) and that was removed and replaced with a little one.
He was good to go really soon and was very happy to be out of pain.
Prayers for no pain and successful surgery if need be. 🙏

Love your t shirt dress and you could certainly wear it without a belt. I shy away from anything that has a defined waist or draws attention to my waist as that is my problem area! I’ve been looking for a t shirt dress so will check that one out. Best of luck on your surgery. You’ll probably wish you had done it sooner! Take care

Great post. I love Aveda lotion for hands. Does not feel greasy after use. Little more expensive but worth it! Use a small amount.
Also, thanks for sharing something different than Nordstrom sale! I waste my time wishing and by the time I get to my level of buying, it’s out of stock. So discouraging. I am retired and really don’t need many investment pieces.
Thanks for your smiles, looking forward to another chat with you, Tania, Deborah and Susan

I find myself looking for soft, pretty colors in sweaters these days. My days of the black turtleneck are over. I had a chain belt made from coins that I wore often. It’s gone where the other sock is, I guess. I know I wouldn’t just get rid of it. It hung low so not right at waist.

    • Jennifer
      July 16, 2021 / 2:36 pm

So many treasured pieces end up where the other sock is:) I had a fabulous belt made of interlocking silver ovals…now gone and I know I would never have donated it.

    Hi Jennifer,
Greetings from Half Moon Bay. Relief from the heat!
You look so lovely in the aqua t-shirt dress. Such a great look. I would never have thought to try those sunnies on, but I’ll definitely look at them now. Thanks for keeping us all current! Good luck on your surgery. Sending hugs.

So sorry about the problems with your trigger fingers.Very painful. Glad to hear you don’t need surgery on your back. I was so bad that I eventually had a 4 level lumbar fusion three years ago. Since then I have had a S1 fusion, repair of two broken bones in my foot, and in May fractured my hip, three major surgeries in five months. Has not been great year so far for mr, do love your blogs so my much. Have used Aveda products, love their lipstick..

Thank you so much Jennifer🥰 not my intention to dismiss your issues with your trigger fingers with my woes. Just praying I come back from all the this on the better side of it. Lol 😂 😂😂😂 cannot let this beat me. Just turned 71 in April.

I also had trigger finger only it was in my thumb. The surgeon said I could only have two shots and then would need surgery. The twitching came back so I switched doctors and was honest and told him that I had two shots but requested a third one. He said he would do it and I have not had any trouble since. I do have a copper band somewhere. Think I will dig it out. I always find your blog interesting. Thanks for the personal updates.

That’s why I love your posts. So relatable! Hope your aches and pain subside soon. And I love the belt, even if it is vintage. I am thinking we could all start wearing our “vintage” clothes and they will become fads again. Saddle shoes, anyone? (All kidding aside, that belt is very stylish).

I don’t really shop Nordstrom’s, but yesterday I was at the mall with a friend. I had heard about the sale so we decide to stop in. We saw the yellow signs with the discounted prices, tried on a few things. When we got to the register to pay, the sales lady says, unless you are a special card holder you have to wait till July 28 when it is open to the general public. What a bummer. They were pretty sneaky about it, never saw the sign about that. Oh well, might try again July 28.

    • Jennifer
      July 16, 2021 / 1:50 pm

Yes, that is frustrating. My store has someone at all the openings to verify you were able to shop. It’s a way for them to reward their most loyal customers first. The good news, is they are likely to restock many things by the time you get to shop

I left my hairdresser of 10 plus years 🙁. She didn’t at the time want to get vaccinated. I moved on and found someone new I am happy with.
Love your newsy blogs and now I want to try those lipsticks!

I wish you well in your trigger fingers journey…it is funny how health issues start to take up more time… 🙂 I remember my Grandma always had doctor’s appts…and now I do.

I did see a lot of things were sold out. Do you think there is less inventory this year, or the sale is more popular. It seems like there are more things that I like are sold out than in the past. Also, why does the fabric wash sell out ? They should stock more of it 🙂

    • Jennifer
      July 16, 2021 / 1:46 pm

I think they will be restocking…at least I hope so. I see very ordinary selections on the floor and more interesting ones online which is what I always see. I think all brands are being more careful with their inventory this year. The other issue is shipping. Many supply chain have had delays so when the merchandise arrives it will go back on the website.

Good to see you are just shopping for yourself… ‘me time’ is a positive thing. Love selecting lipstick 💄 … a small change, but your choices are lovely, Jennifer . I enjoy treating myself to light cashmere sweaters and shawls. Why not!

Due to feeling too much like a tightly twisted torso with sore feet… likely somewhat your problem…
#1 begun one on one Pilates and love it❤️ regaining core strength and balance
#2 cortisone shot for under each 🦶🏻🦶🏻to minimize the nasty neuromas that are reducing my pleasure out walking and gardening 👍

Doc Z will not do the shot in my big toe joint for the same reason you are experiencing in your hand… only if it really bothers me… and happily it seems to be better.
    Ahhh… this aging thing … 71 next week .🎂

    • Jennifer
      July 16, 2021 / 1:43 pm

I used to get those shots in my big toe before I had bunion surgery. I know how very painful it is. It sounds like you are doing the exact right thing. Best of luck

So sorry to hear you need surgery, but hopefully that will correct the problem.
That’s so funny that belts are now considered vintage. I have a very similar belt to yours, only mine is black and I think I got it back in the 80’s.
I’m craving a new brighter lipstick, and now that stores are opening up here, I will have to go shopping.

Sorry to hear about your hand requiring surgery, but very relieved to know your covid test was negative. I do not go anywhere, even to the salon (where they’ve all been vaccinated) without a mask.

Ugh…that Nordstrom sale! I was listed able to shop as of today, but by the time I logged on at 7AM, six of the items in my wish list were already sold out – and of course, those are the ones I really, really wanted. Oh well, perhaps they were not vital to my existence.

Love the Henley dress on you. Perfect for hot weather. I can totally relate to the feeling of falling apart. Aging is not for the feint of heart😂.
To be considered antique an item must be at least 100 years old. Vintage items are 20-99 years old.
    Have a great weekend Jennifer.

I suppose it is just like the smokers who continue smoking even though they know cancer is inevitable. At least they don’t put other’s lives at risk if they do it away from them. Everyone is not vaccinated, and even those who are cannot be certain of anything right now and should still wear a mask.

I have had the shots and the surgery for trigger finger on my right hand, it was extremely painful. My left hand started the same symptoms and my thumb also is very painful. I have always heard copper is good for arthritis so I got a copper band and I wear it on my left hand day and night. I no longer have trigger finger on my left hand. My thumb still has some pain but not as severe. I don’t know any reasons why but it worked for me and I thought I would share.

I chuckled about your belt now being advertised as vintage. Seems like anything more than 5 years old is now vintage! Have you considered a straw/ropey belt? I had one years ago that was a great summer belt. I’m sure that kind of belt is now “vintage”. I immediately noticed the nice shade of lipstick on you so I’m glad you told us about Aveda. Lastly, I’m sorry you’re facing finger surgery. Growing old is downright scary sometimes.

    • Jennifer
