I’m 66 years old and have just bought my first pair of denim jeans! I know, I know, a little strange. Always worn smart clothes for the office etc. but am hopeless with the more casual look. So looking for inspiration

I would like to find places to shop that carry more unique styles than one would find in department stores. I’m five hours from any large cities, but would gladly fly to an area that had some interesting shops. I’m over 80 and wear size 16 pants if that info helps.

What country are you in Nancy? Are you looking for creative clothes that may have a slight boho vibe? I can direct you to some fun online boutiques.

I can’t tell you how much I appreciate the style advice you provide on your blog. I have been looking for a fashion magazine that provides real style for mature women with out paying couture prices without success. I never thought to look for a blog. Two years ago I wore a two piece bathing suit on a Mediterranean cruise because all the European women were wearing bikinis and I wanted to fit in. FYI, I thought everyone my age looked pretty bad. This year I wanted to know what would actually look GOOD and fit in with the European beach set. I Googled “flattering swimsuits to wear in the Mediterranean for women over 60” and your blog popped up. I’m letting the right color blocking, spandex, and an underwire do all the work. Thank you for this service.

Welcome Patsy, I’m so happy you’re here. It is a shame that fashion magazines have abandoned our demographic! I have long lamented the demise of fashion magazines for mature women but find most info available online.

Jennifer I have following your blog for a couple years of more. I have followed many of your tips & also purchased items you showed on your Dressing Rood Dairies (which I love). However the BEST tip from you is your recommendation to read The Address, The Masterpiece, etc.. I have read 2 of the three and LOVE them. The stories are interesting, vivid in the descriptions of early New York & styles of the era. Thank you Thank you.

Regarding your criteria list for where to retire, our active adult community in Mesquite NV (Sun City Mesquite) meets most of them. Yes, it gets hot in July-August, but that’s 2 months of adverse weather rather than 6! And, luck you, your travel trailer can furnish the relief from desert heat for those few weeks you need it. San Diego is 5 hours away (barring traffic slowdowns.) There are multitudes of active things to do nearby, indoors and outside. Cultural opportunities abound. The local hospital is small, but proximity to St. George UT and the Intermountain network works well. Many medical specialties have office hours in Mesquite clinics. The ED is staffed by the same contracted Emergency Medicine specialists as Las Vegas’s and St. George’s facilities. As an RN, I knew what to look for in emergency triage policies for the conditions more commonly affecting our age group, such as heart attacks and strokes.
Lower crime rates go along with the small-town life such as ours.
Having done hospital discharge planning professionally, I’ve recognized that many retired folks find they have to relocate again, closer to family, once they have greater need for family support and can’t take advantage of the active amenities anymore. It may be unavoidable, so I figure meantime it’s ok to land in a community that has more of what you’re looking for, apart from closeness to caregivers, for whatever are your active years.

Hi Jennifer! I’ve been reading and loving your blog for several months and look forward to your daily advice and inspiration.
Looking back at one of your blogs, I see you were just about 50 miles south of where I live in Astoria on the Oregon coast! I love the weather here, but as you know, it’s no where near tropical. Which brings me to the question I hope you can help with.
My niece is getting married in April in the Virgin Islands on the beach. I have no idea about what to wear, (other than a huge hat) much less where to shop for anything. I’m 66, 5’8″ and have all the usual extra pounds and jiggly bits of middle age that I need to hide. I have a few maxi dresses, but need to wear a cami underneath as they’re cut so low. This makes them way to hot and my arms are still exposed to all that hot sun.
Do you have any advice on what fabrics and styles to wear that are chic, fashionable and cool and where to buy them? I have long legs and usually buy tall sizes, when I can find them. Maybe a flowy top and capris would be better than a dress? Help! I need to find my style sweet spot!
Thanks so much for considering my question. I love that you are such a chic and fashionable granny and such a fashion role model for the rest of us!

      Hi Susan,
It will be hot and humid. The wedding sounds casual so I would look for a cotton maxi or 3/4 length dress with a higher neckline that has 3/4 sleeves. Cami’s can be sticky hot. If you can only find sleeveless, then I would get a lightweight (cotton) wrap or sweater for your shoulders and arms. The trick is to wear natural fibers that don’t cling and allow air flow. A flowy top and capri’s could be cute and you could wear flat sandals. I find dresses coolest in humid weather. Linen, cotton, bamboo thin silk are all great choices. I hope this helps. Good luck!

This sounds fun! I’m not sure we will get all the way to Seattle but I’ll have a look for future trips. I love discovering new blogs!
