Dressing Room Diaries at J.Jill

Happy Wednesday, ladies. The ‘All Things Cozy’ collection at J.Jill has been trickling into my two local stores so I’ve been back and forth several times to get this try-on session for you…and buying more than I expected:) There is more arriving every day, so let’s get started.

Most J. Jill items are available in misses, petite, womens, and tall. As always you click the red text for more info and to shop the item.

If you’re new here, welcome. A dressing room diary is when I go into a store and try on new merchandise so you can see how it looks on a woman over 25 as well as get some styling ideas. For reference, I’m 5’4″, and weigh around 136 pounds. I have an inverted triangle-shaped silhouette with broad shoulders, straight hips with very few curves. I also have a long torso and arms so often wear one size larger on top than the bottom. I can wear regular and petite garments depending on their proportions.

WOMAN WEARING J JILL SWEATER AND LEGGINGS
WEARING –  STONEWASHED CABLED SWEATER  – PIMA ANKLE LEGGING IN WOODBINE

This stonewashed cabled sweater comes in three colors including this soft olive in misses, petite, and women, XS-XL. I am wearing a misses small. It’s 100% cotton so it’s wonderful for you ladies who can’t wear wool or cashmere. This is not long enough to wear with leggings like I am showing here but it would be great over jeans, cords, or any pants. The Pima cotton leggings come in 5 colors. They’re thick and very opaque with a high lycra content to maintain their shape. I am wearing a misses in small.

WEARING –  CABLED CARDIGAN  –  SMOOTHING PONTE LEGGINGS

This cabled cardigan is just fabulous. It also came in an oatmeal color which appears to be sold out already! It’s a great length to wear over a skirt, dress, or pants. I am wearing a misses in small. The ponte leggings are some of my favorites. There is a front seam down the front which is very slimming and for some bizarre reason doesn’t show in my photo. They come in 4 colors, this is Beechwood in misses, small. I have to say, these are awesome leggings.

WEARING – PURE JILL REVERSIBLE TEDDY COAT

This reversible, faux shearling coat caught my attention the second I walked in the door. It’s the most gorgeous soft winter white. It comes in misses, petite, and medium. I am wearing a misses in small, which is surprisingly long on me so I would opt for the petite version, just for the sleeves. It’s really just gorgeous. I prefer it with the faux suede on the outside so I can use the pockets. Big pocket fan here:)

WEARING –  CRUSHED VELOUR KIMONO TOP –  CRUSHED VELOUR FULL LEG PANT

I love knit velour for comfortable pieces to wear at home. This is their full leg pant in licorice, which is a soft gray. It also comes in rose/taupe. I’m wearing a petite small which is too short for me and illustrates why at 5’4″, I don’t expect petite garments to always fit me. The kimono top is a petite small and the perfect length. The dropped shoulders aren’t the most flattering on my wide shoulders, but it does fit.

WEARING –  HOODED DOWN PUFFER VEST  –  PLUSH VELOUR TOP  –  AUTHENTIC SLIM FIT JEANS

I love the extra-long length of their puffer vests this year. They come in 4 gorgeous colors and have a hood, how clever is that? I am wearing the small petite which fits but I ended up ordering the misses to get that little bit of extra length. I’m wearing it over this plush velour top which comes in three colors and is super soft. I am wearing a medium petite, which fits well.

These are J. Jill’s classic slim-fit jeans which come in 5 colors, 02-18. I am wearing a 4 petite which is snug and a bit too short for my legs so I would choose the misses in 6, and hem if needed. This time of year, I like my ankle pants to actually cover my ankles, for warmth.

WEARING –  VELVET TOP  –  PIMA ANKLE LEGGINGS IN WOODBINE ON LEFT  –  VELVETEEN STRETCH HIGH-RISE JEANS IN DEEP OLIVE ON RIGHT  –  SCARF is not up on their site at the time of this writing

This velvet boatneck top comes in this deep olive or black. It gives a great “dressed up” look in a machine-washable velvet that’s great for casual holidays. I’m wearing a small petite. On the left, I’m wearing it over Pima cotton leggings, and on the right, over velveteen stretch high-rise jeans which are a simple way to step up your everyday look during the holidays.

I would prefer this top in the regular length over leggings, but I do like this petite length over the jeans. As you know, it’s all about proportion and ‘coverage’ for me with leggings:)

WEARING –  REVERSIBLE DOWN AND SHERPA PUFFER  COAT  –  HIGH-RISE STRAIGHT-LEG JEANS

This reversible down/sherpa puffer coat is really nice. The website says it runs small, but it didn’t on me. I am wearing a misses in small and it fits exactly as I would expect. It has a relaxed fit with room for layering. It’s a deep navy with patch pockets on the quilted side and side pockets on the sherpa side.

I’m wearing it with these high-rise straight jeans in the laguna wash that fit beautifully. They also come in a soft gray that would be pretty for total outfits. I am wearing a 6 petite and love that they’re covering my ankles:)

WEARING –  BEADED JACQUARD SCARF  –  PURE JILL LONG SHACKET  –  CRUSHED VELOUR LEGGINGS

J. Jill makes some of the most gorgeous scarves and this collection is no exception. This beaded jacquard scarf is in shades of rose, taupe, soft blue, and pale gray. It’s 70″ long and 27″ wide so you could easily wear it wrapped around your shoulders too.

The Pure Jill Long Shacket is a gorgeous soft plum they call Bayberry. It’s got a fleece-like texture so feels really cozy.  I am wearing a misses small. The velour leggings are the same soft gray as the wider pants shown above and also come in black violet which has a purple cast to them. I’m wearing a misses small, and you can see the legs are a touch long on me.

WEARING –  TWEED CHENILLE SWEATER  –  VEGAN LEATHER PULL-ON PANTS

The vegan leather pull-on pants come in two colors, misses, petite, women’s, and tall in XS-XL. I am wearing a petite in small. These fit like pants rather than leggings so they aren’t skin tight which is a nice change. I’m a huge fan of chenille and cables so this cozy sweater really rang my bell. It’s also got a tweed effect to the yarn, much like the yarn I used to knit with. I am wearing a misses small.

WEARING –  CASHMERE PLAID SCARF  –  PUFFER VEST  –  BLUE CASHMERE SWEATER – on sale –  CASHMERE GLOVES C/O  –  SHOULDER BAG 40% off

Here I am last weekend, wearing my puffer vest which I bought in the spruce color. It happens to coordinate perfectly with my Black Watch Tartan Scarf from Talbots and these beautiful navy cashmere gloves from Black. They are a super lustrous cashmere, made in Scotland and the ultimate luxury for chilly hands. They’d also make a great holiday gift.

Have you tried on the latest from J. Jill?

Thanks for reading ladies and remember to wear what makes you feel confident.

  1. J. Jill has produced a slew of beautiful items this Fall/Winter. I actually purchased the Deep Olive Velvet top (Misses Med.) and matching high-rise Deep Olive Jeans (Misses Tall). I can’t wait for the holiday parties to begin!! J. Jill and Talbots, and occasionally Chico’s, are great places to shop. Nordstrom is not close by (bah humbug!)

Thank you, Jennifer, for the wonderful posts. Love your down-to-earth vibe and great style.

    1. That’s a great outfit!! Thanks for being here, Christi:)

I LOVE everything you tried on! Sadly there’s no J.Jill’s in Canada. : ( I’ll have to check it out next time I’m in the US now that the borders are all open.

Love the longer cable cardigan. I had a similar one for years and finally let it go, but it will be hard to justify purchasing as I have so many cardigans. 🙁
The longer fit is great for the cold winters where I live. it almost feels like a blanket and keeps your back and bum warm.

  4. Lots of different outfits here! I love the jackets and the sweater, really my style. Thanks for all you do.

  5. I love the spruce color & I think black velvet and pearls are just made to go together. I don’t really wear puffer but reversible makes me look twice. I just bought a pair of pants with camouflage on one side and a pretty brown color on the other. Skinny type in stretchy knit fabric. I wear solid side and cuff them. I love the tweed sweater in the multi sage.

I can’t thank you enough for your try one today. I hadn’t enjoyed the fashion at J Jill’s the last few months. Your choices really inspired me to go into their store. Thank you! Love the leggings, chenille sweater and the shacket. Your color choices looked great. We have the same coloring so I was impressed with the greens and eggplant.

  7. I love that you feature J Jill sometimes, they’re my favorite store and I don’t see too many other fashion bloggers use them. I think their styles are perfect for older women.

    1. I love J.Jill so I will continue to buy, wear, and share them

  8. I like the color combination of the outfit you wore last weekend in the last photo- very pretty. Please continue the dressing room diaries especially from J Jill. I buy lots at J Jill mostly online because the store does not stock much in petite. Their clothes fit me and are cute. I was able to try on both the velour slouch outfit and the stonewashed sweater in the store. I like the velour slouch top and wide pants but the droop shoulders and extra material across the chest are not a good look for me. I love the stonewashed sweater but the oversize droop shoulder does not work for me.

    1. Drop shoulders are not the most flattering on me either:)

Jennifer, thank you for your posts. I recently purchased my first pair of j.jill jeans and nothing has every fit me better. I love the new collection! And you make it look easy to pull together. Recently I had to actually leave my house for a meeting. I realized I havent had to “dress” for work in so long I’ve forgotten what to pull together to look “pulled together”. Your posts are inspiring. Thank you!

  10. I enjoyed all the outfits shown. You must have had fun trying these great outfits on.
Especially like the olive cable sweater and the longer off-white vest and , of course the velveteen tops and bottoms.
Got me in the Holiday Mood. Thanks 🙏

  11. Jennifer,
I’m sure the teddy coat looks nice at first glance in the shop but to me it’s like wearing a bathrobe outside. Just saying

  12. Hi
Lots of cool stuff! What is your recommendation for the length of tops with leggings. I’m not sure how long it should be. Thanks.

    1. There’s a link to my leggings post in this one but basically they need to cover your backside and I even like a tiny bit more. Fingertip length is my favorite.

  13. Lots of eye-candy here today, for sure! Do love the sherpa/down coat in particular. To conclude; am waiting patiently until the Canadian – USA border opens up and the $200.00 fee for a RT-PCR (Covid) Test is cancelled (for entry back into Canada) so can order and process through customs myself. Until then ….. sigh!
Always with appreciation of your Dressing Room diaries, Jennifer.
    -Brenda-

    1. Agreed! Crossing the border is expensive these days. Hopefully soon!

Some lovely things- particularly the velour. I was getting excited only to find that JJill don’t service Europe. Interesting that I get this message when the UK isn’t part of the EU. What a time we live in! I really enjoy your posts (and the responses!)

  15. Paulette Levy says:

You love velvet as I do! For the holidays (and beyond) it’s just the best fabric, shimmering and soft. I have a few older velvet and silk pieces that I’ll be wearing!
Love j Jill quality and the neutrals they’ve been showing. I ventured into our local store (Masks must be worn) and things were pretty much sold out from two weeks ago.
