Beyond the Pale

Beyond the Pale

Colors may be refreshing and add life to your outfits, but sometimes I need neutrals. They’re easier to add to my wardrobe because they tend to be more timeless and they’re less memorable, which means I wear them more often.Jennifer Connolly of A Well Styled Life wearing ivory sweater and tank with gray jeans

When LilySilk asked me to share their summer promotions with you, I found myself drawn to their pale neutrals. I already have a ton of black in my wardrobe and wanted something lighter, so I  zeroed in on soft white and ivory.Jennifer Connolly of A Well Styled Life wearing ivory silk top and cardifan from LilySily with NJDJ gray jeans

This silk cardigan is perfectly classic and oh so wearable. It’s available in black, camel or this soft white. It will dress up over a sleeveless dress or down over a tank top and jeans. It’s a straight fit so not body-conscious which makes it easy to wear over many things. I am wearing a medium.Jennifer Connolly of A Well Styled Life wearing white sweater, gray jeans and white sunglasses

Here, I’ve styled it over a lightweight, fully lined, crepe de chine silk camisole in soft Ivory. This seems more like a tank to me because the shoulders will cover your bras straps. Because I can wear it with my regular bra, I will reach for again and again. I always handwash my silk and steam lightly to get the wrinkles out. I am wearing the medium which fits well, so it runs true to size. It’s also available in black, but this natural white is very flattering against my skin tone.Jennifer Connolly of A Well Styled Life wearing white top and sweater with gray jeans It’ll also coordinate with brown, blue, gray, black, or myriad deeper colors this fall and get a lot of use.

As always, LilySilk items arrive wrapped in tissue and beautifully packaged like a present.Jennifer Connolly of A Well Styled Life wearing white lilysilk sweater with gray jeans

I really like the outfit you are wearing and agree that neutrals are easy to wear, plus I think they look more expensive and chicer than bright colours, except perhaps on a hot summer’s day, then I think bright colours can look great. I have based my wardrobe around neutrals and like you, find it much easier to style an outfit, only with navy, grey, white and black. If I want to add colour itnwill be with a scarf, bag or shoes.

I have neutrals as a foundation but always include strong colour otherwise I feel drained.

Love the look of neutrals and they give you a soft look. I am going to look into this brand. I hope they carry petites because otherwise the tops will be far too long for me.

You look cool and comfortable, and the sunglasses add a nice color pop. I’d love it if you’d do a video showing how you use your steamer.

The soft white of the camisole and cardigan is very flattering. I’ve not heard of this company before but will check it out. But, the real star here is your hair. It’s beautiful!

You do look lovely in neutral shades. Due to me going gray a few years ago, I tend to wear neutrals ( gray, navy and black) but usually need a pop of colour ( either in the top, jewellery options ir bright lipstick). Fuchsias, bright greens and pinks or orange as all neutrals would likely wash me out. I do love your hair too and have just switched to a short hair style. Looking at your do, I might regret my decision.

My wardrobe is neutrals but like you I find myself moving away from so much black as I get older and leaning toward lighter neutrals. Once my hair turned grey I find I need lighter colors next to my face. I call them make up or skin tone colors or use a scarf in softer colors next to my face. I still wear darker neutrals but keep them away from my face. I love this look & it really suits you well.

You look lovely in the outfit, but what really makes it zing, are the metallic shoes and that interesting necklace! Definitely my style. Where oh where did you find the necklace?

Looking good, Susan and do like the fact the top is self-lined. With respect to neutrals, I could not do without them in my wardrobe as personally feel, similar to the rule in interior design they are classic giving reason why they are often chosen for fixed elements. Whereas colour on the other hand often comes under the umbrella of ‘trend’ so it has never been a top priority of mine so I namely add it vie accessories. i.e.: A belt/scarf/purse/piece of jewelry etc. As for silk absolutely love wearing it (particularly when blended with linen) as so comfortable ‘n cool in hot muggy weather, so do appreciate the link you provided.

Oh Jennifer, do apologize for getting your name wrong as just prior to my comment had emailed a friend of mine called Susan (who was having a crisis in her life) and still had her on my mind. Please forgive. -Brenda-

You look great in this – love the necklace and the shoes, and your hair looks so pretty! I love color, but I agree that neutrals usually look more chic.

I have just joined awellstyledlife.com & I am loving the posts Jennifer & helpful comments from other readers.
My styling is so similar to yours, I am colour “shy” much prefer neutrals with a pop from an accessory, I so need to use more jewellery, that is something I have learned from you.

Unlike many of the other comments, I think you look washed out in this outfit. Would be very interested to see you after you have your colors done professionally and might even have the shade of blonde enhanced. Just a thought.
