Dressing Room Diaries- Spring Forward

Happy Sunday ladies. It seems frivolous to talk about clothes with everything that’s going on, but we do need to get dressed and it’s a great distraction so let’s indulge. I needed to be at the mall to walk in the Talbots fashion show on Thursday. As I was leaving I popped into Nordstrom for a quick dressing room diaries. This may be my last for a little while so I hope you enjoy.

If you’re new here, drd is when I go into stores and try on new merchandise so you can see how it looks on a woman over 25 who wears a size larger than zero. For reference, I am 5’4″ and have an inverted triangle shape. I weigh 147 pounds and have broad shoulders with straight, slim hips. My torso and arms are long.

With spring in the air, I gravitated to color and started with this look.

Curves 360 Perfect Blouse / Floral legging jeans

NYDJ makes multiple variations of this popular blouse in zillions of colors. Plus version here. This is the 3/4 sleeve perfect blouse in “Ocean Drive”. I’m wearing a regular in a medium. It’s available in 16 other colors. It runs large so order down one size. The leggings are like a breath of spring air. They’re very slim fitting with lift tuck technology to keep everything in place. I’m wearing a 6 which is snugger than I like so they fit true to size.

Hazy Days Twist hem linen sweater / Marilyn high-rise jeans

These are NYDJ straight leg Marilyn jeans. I have and love the fit of these jeans. Mine is in a very deep wash so I’m loving the switch to this water-conscious Belle Isle, pale wash. I’m wearing an 8 regular which are miles too long so I folded the bottom under. These jeans stretch out with wear, so size down. This sweater is really lovely! Soft and lightweight with a tie-dye of soft blues. I’m wearing a regular in a medium so it runs true to size. The petite would also fit, but because I have a long torso, I would opt for regular length.

long linen cardigan / Inky Flowers tank topplus here / high-rise straight-leg jeans

Here are the same jeans as above in a size 6 which fits me better. The top is a perfect tank to wear with jeans or you could dress it up. Nic+Zoe makes some of the nicest linen cardigans and this is no exception. I like the longer length of this one. It has no closure so I just wrapped the front. Notice my legs look longer with the tank tucked in but you can get a similar proportion by wearing short over long the way I tied this cardi.

In The Clouds shirtdress

I’m having a real thing about dresses this spring. In fact, I bought 2 at Talbots which you’ll see soon. This shirtdress by Nic+Zoe is a bold print with black, white and very pale blue. I’m wearing a medium in regular which fits but it’s too long for me. Dresses look best when hemmed to a spot where your leg narrows.

Crossover Tie Dye Twist Detail dress

I loved this twist front dress but it’s made for a woman with curvier hips than me;( The twist at the waist makes this very flattering. I’m wearing a petite large which is a better length than the other dress, but even in petite medium, it would have too much fabric for straight hips. This is a great casual dress you could top with a blazer to and wear to work or white keds and run around town.

Plaid Tweed Jacket / white tank / Barely Bootcut jeans

This open-front tweed jacket is a great piece for casual or dresses up for the office. It has no closure and is meant to be worn open. I’m wearing a petite in medium, which fits but has no stretch so I would go up one size for comfort. I wore the white tank and jeans into the store.

Open Front Crop Jacket

This darling little jacket is too large for me. I’m wearing a medium in regular length but would be better in the petite. Plus size here It’s meant to be more cropped than this and the sleeves are meant to be bracelet length. It’s a fun little jacket to pop over a tee and jeans or a summer dress that needs a little extra shoulder coverage.

Until things settle down, I down expect to be doing drd in the near future.

Thanks for reading and stay safe.

  1. I’m not in love with the fringed jacket thing, but you do look so good in that turquoise color.

  2. Love that you are distracting us!! Yesterday was a double edge sword for me got our tickets delivered for our Viking Cruise from Paris to Normandy due to sail 5/5! Doubt that will happen. Then in the afternoon got confirmation for Aruba December 4th. So I guess you get the good with the bad! We all have to go with the flow and stay safe! Please continue your post even if it is clothes from your closet ! You have such great style.
Going to go wash my hands now šŸ˜‚

  3. Thank you, Jennifer, for this perfect distraction! I loved all of the pieces you modeled, especially the cheery printed pants! I’m trying so hard to curb my clothing impulse buys, but now I’m lusting for some of things you have on! Lol! Oh well; it sure is fun to look! Thanks again.

  4. Love your posts, and it seems like this is the safest way to still maintain contact with the outside world for awhile. Please keep posting!
Love the aqua shirt & print pants, but it made me wonder… is it just me or do so many blouses seem to be thinner & much more sheer these days, or is it just me? Is this how manufacturers are saving money?
    Stay safe & healthy everybody!!

    1. A lot of them are sheerer which Iā€™m not a fan of either. I wonder if theyā€™re doing it to save money or just a style choice. Stay safe

  12. It certainly is not frivolous to do this kind of post and talk about clothes. We need something to keep us sane and take our minds off the constant bad news. You are a ray of sunshine in the morning. I love the floral jeans and will have to think of that for this spring, also the white jacket is stunning and I would love to try that. Thank you for venturing out for us and as the others have said, would love to see pictures of the fashion show. Thanks and keep well.

Loved todayā€™s drd. I would wear most of these but I would struggle with the dresses. I have a large chest and dresses are g hg are to fit for me.

    1. I struggle with that too because I have a broad back and narrow hips. Iā€™m playing around with some ideas which Iā€™ll be sharing.

  15. Sue Daehlin says:

Thank you for this post. You have inspired me to be more conscientious about the way I dress and look. I really like the aqua blouse with 3/4 length sleeves. I would love to see photos from your fashion show. And I bet you could shop your closet for future posts. I always look forward to your morning post which I read while sipping my tea. Thank you again.

  16. I think you knocked it out of the park today. I would buy/wear so many of these outfits! I love Nic and Zoe and my favorite sweater is one I bought at Nordstrom over two years ago. Yes I spent more than I normally do but it is so special it was worth it. Thank you for doing this. Look forward to when you resume.

    1. Investment pieces are all the sweeter when you love them. Stay safe

  17. Loved almost everything, but especially the floral pants with the blue blouse. Looks like springtime , and goodness knows we need that. Especially this year.

  18. Despite this very stressful situation we are all in today, I am seeing so many acts of kindness everywhere! Any small act of kindness goes a long way and may be just what we all need to get through the days ahead.
It was a fun blog today! I do love the the dye tied shirt. I could mix that with several things I already have. I enjoy looking at all the other outfits even though I would not invest in them.

    1. We all need positivity so Iā€™m glad to see people being kind.

  19. Thank you, Jennifer! I smiled when I woke up this morning and saw your DRD post. My favorite outfit on you today is that white cropped jacket paired with the jeans and tank that you already own. That jacket is sweet! Stay well.

  20. I would wear everything except the floral jeans….donā€™t want to call attention to heavy thighs.

    Will miss your posts…stay safe.

  21. i love all of your post and your DRD are great. I have a strange question is that when you are home how do you dress?? I always struggle with this because I don’t want to wear nice clothes and get things all over them, such as cleaning or cooking, but I don’t want to look like a slob either because that appears that you don’t care. I would love everyones thoughts.

    Please stay safe.

    1. I tend to wear less layers at home. If Iā€™m spending the whole day at home, I wear knits which are most comfy. I wear my regular makeup and put on accessories. I also wear lots of aprons šŸ™‚

  22. Julie Pounders says:

Love the last jacket the most wish it were a little
    Cheaper. The trim is fabulous.

  23. I will miss these posts as they are my favorite, but I totally understand the whole social distancing that is being encouraged. Stay safe everyone and wash those hands.

  24. Love your outfits. We have to stay calm and thank you for blog–it is not frivolous. Everyday things can keep us calm. God bless all of you and pray for our world and our President. Thank you

  25. Thanks for doing this DRD. I will miss them, but better you stay save. BTW I love the floral jeans and aqua top on you.

We need these beautiful ā€˜escapesā€™ from whatā€™s going on. Went to the market for veggies and my clementines and berries. At 7am when they open J expected to be the only person there! Wrong! I dashed in grabbed my produce then paid and left! As a senior citizen Iā€™m extremely wary and try to stay with 10 or fewer people. All my exercise classes are cancelled fir two weeks so just bundling up and walking twice a day. Makes me feel good! So dOes your blog! Itā€™s my escape and today I am loving all the clothes you are modeling! Thanks

    1. Iā€™m using my umbrella to go for a walk today too! Stay safe Paulette

  30. Thanks for posting…i dont think its frivolous…its a nice change from the hysteria. i love those floral jeans! i have a few print jeans….i usually have to try them on first, usually dont online order…because sometimes prints are kind to me…and sometimes make me laugh out loud they are so very wrong….

    1. I still regret not buying lemon print jeans I tried I last year:) Which is funny because I seldom wear printsšŸ‹

      1. Jennifer, what a fun post that would be: The Things I Didn’t Buy But Wish I Had. LOL! I have two, a leather jacket & a classic trench. It’s been years — YEARS! — but I still regret passing up both & think of them more often than makes sense [seriously, I think of that leather jacket more often than I do my ex-husband & with much more regret!]. I make myself laugh sometimes šŸ™‚

      2. LOL! I have several things that haunt me too:)
