In The Dressing Room With Talbots

Happy Sunday ladies. I popped into Talbots on Friday to do dressing room diaries while I picked up a few basics and nearly came away with the whole darn store!! Things are so amazingly priced it’s easy to go overboard. That got me thinking… this may be a great time to buy classic pieces in quality fabrics that you will wear next summer.

If you’re new here, dressing room diaries is when I go into stores and try on merchandise so you can see how it looks on a woman over 25 who wears a size larger than zero. For reference, I am 5’4″ tall, weigh approximately 145 lbs, have broad shoulders and straight, narrow hips. I have a high rise and long arms. My hair gets trashed more than usual in this process and the lighting is bad, but you’ll get an idea of the clothes and how they look.

This outfit is T by Talbots in the petite section. I am wearing a medium petite which fits perfectly so it runs true to size. As with most Talbots garments, it is also available in regular, plus, and plus petite. The photo shows this as black but it’s a deep indigo blue. The pants are super comfy and have sun protection built right into the fabric! They’re available in several pretty colors. I am wearing a petite small which means it runs true to size because I always wear at least one size smaller on the bottom (broad shoulders, narrow hips).

This dress is also T by Talbots and super soft. I’m wearing a petite medium which is true to size, but because it’s a bit snug across the chest, and the belt is too high for my waistline, I would opt for the regular version. That would make it longer but the side slit would save it from being too long.

This tee is just plain fun. It’s less opaque than their other crew neck tees, but not so you would need anything other than a nude bra under it. I am wearing a regular medium and would probably choose the petite large to keep it roomy and a bit shorter. The shorts are Talbots Perfect Bermuda’s with a 10 1/2″ inseam. They come in tons of colors and fit beautifully. I am wearing an 8 petite so they run very true to size. They are cotton with spandex so while they look crisp, they are very flexible and comfy.

These are the same shorts in 6 regular which make them just a tiny bit longer and a smidge snugger through the waist. At my age, I prefer this length so depending on how long your legs are you can adjust the length by wearing regular or petite. This is Talbots no-iron sleeveless blouse in 10 petite. It’s a bit snug across the chest which means it runs true to size. For buttoned woven shirts, I typically go up a size to prevent gaping.

I dressed up the shorts with a braided belt in indigo and a cardigan that has a pretty open weave. I love this polished look. If we were going places, I would wear some pretty slip-on shoes and wear them to a casual dinner out or even for casual Friday at work. The cardigan is lovely and soft and comes in white as well as this indigo.

These perfect crops are in an 8 petite so they run true to size. The cotton/spandex fabric is nicely polished and comes in tons of pretty colors. I find this an unusual length on me so I would get the 6 regulars to get the additional length. They are super comfy and great pants for summer.

This outfit would be so perfect for pickleball… if I played it. Seriously, it would be great for lots of things on hot summer days. It’s a cotton spandex skirt over cotton spandex undershorts. Talk about easy and no thigh chafing! I am wearing a petite medium and would probably choose the small regular for a touch more length.

This split neck tee is white with indigo. I am wearing a medium in petite. This shape also comes in a pretty stripe hereblue stripe here, floral here, and in heathered soft colors here.

This is the perfect no-iron shirt in an 8 regular which fits me much better across the chest than the 10 petite and also provides enough extra length to tie it at my waist. These shirts are in a beautiful soft cotton with spandex with double-ended darts up the torso which keeps it slim looking.

Do you shop in different size categories to get the length, size, and shape you prefer?

I am five foot one and find that Talbots is the only store where I can find clothes that fit me. Thankfully, I wear classic styles. I ran across a picture of me holding my son as a baby wearing a jacket from Talbots. My son is 32 and I still wear that jacket. Well made classics don’t go out of style.

I love, love, love those indigo shorts and white top on you! Both with and without the indigo cardigan. That would be exactly how I would dress if that outfit looked that good on me! Thanks for modeling Talbot’s clothes. They do seem perfect for you. Not sure they would look that great on me in plus sizes.

It’s certainly worth a try, Joan. Their pus sizes are designed for you and at these prices worth the effort to see for yourself. You can always return them if you don’t like the look.

Have to agree, feel everything you modeled looks fabulous on you. As for shopping sales; not unusual for me to particularly purchase special occasion items that other wise may have a hefty price tag which I may choose not to even wear until a year or so later. Reasons; as my taste is classic know it will still be in style and is easier on my wallet …….. ☺.

Thanks so much for a great “DRD”! I love Talbots and am looking forward to new merchandise -hopefully coming soon. The sale prices are terrific, but I’ve already bought what I like there. I wish that I looked as good as you in shorts and dresses. Unfortunately, the veins in my legs are so bad that I only wear pants and jeans. I can’t complain though – they work! Take care!

Thank you so much for the sizing ideas. I am short waisted and in between a med and small in tops so this will really help. Loved all the styles. You look great in everything.

Love them all and like you I get regular for longer length on my short legs … im hesitant to wear sleeveless any more with my flabbier arms so I opt for 3/4 sleeves and in coastal living it’s never that hot .. I buy for next season when good sales are on too . Thanks for modeling for us who can’t go instores 😍

Jennifer, I love your dressing room diaries. I find that my body type and yours to be very similar, so I enjoy seeing what shapes look good on you as they will also look good on me :). I am 5′ 4″ and 128 pounds, wear a 34DD, have a flat bottom, and have a rectangle shape. My shoulders and hips are pretty much in a straight line, so my hips are a little wider than yours. Or maybe it’s that my shoulders aren’t as wide as yours. I’m not sure! I dress to avoid showing my tummy since that’s where every extra ounce seems to land.
I disagree with the poster who said that sizing has changed and if one is 5’4″ one is petite. I am long waisted with long arms and long legs for my height. I can virtually never wear any long sleeved petite tops. The arms are always too short. Petite pants are always too short. Even if I go up a size, the length is wrong and then the hips are baggy. I can sometimes go up a size in a short sleeved top just as you do to get a better length. I can sometimes do that with a dress also if there is not a defined waist. The hem will often be in a better place, but if there is a defined waist it will hit me way too high. Skirts are usually the only clothing item that will work better in a petite. I find I usually do better with regular misses sizes, but if I am shopping a brand that has both petite and misses sizes I will try the petite sizing if misses doesn’t work.

Jennifer-you look great in all of the outfits!! i vote -buy them all!!😊 I am a big Talbots shopper. The sales are outstanding and I buy mostly on line because the sizes are pretty consistent and the colors are good season to season. Our store here in the Denver area opened and Talbots is great about returns. The only downside to these wonderful styles/prices is when my Talbots credit card arrives!! Oh well, all the purchases are “keepers”and someone needs to stimulate the economy!!
Thanks for keeping us thinking about looking our best!😄

I love Talbot’s, and I love how you explained how you mix and match sizes. I do the same. At 5’3″ and 140 lbs, I can wear a PM in tops sometimes, but also buy the regular M because my bust has increased. I never buy their petite pants because the rise isn’t correct for me. Instead, I buy the regular 6 in ankle or crop pants, and they fit perfectly. Since I only buy online now, it can be dicey; however, I find Talbot’s runs true to size for me. Thank you for taking the time to do this.

The geranium top outfit and the striped dress are my favorites on you. Color suits you.

I do the same thing with tweaking lengths. In odd-length pants, which so many are now, I go to tall lengths without sizing up, in order to get regular-length pants. I don’t get the strange pant lengths. They are not attractive on most women, IMO.

I like the Dressing Room Diaries because of your sizing advice. I often see petite women who do not seem to understand that they are petite. Size charts changed years ago, so if you’re 5’4″, you’re petite now. Proportions are different in petite sizes. If you are regular height but shorter in the torso, petite tops may fit you better, as would petite pants in some cases. The thing is, it’s important to try different options. From petite sizes to regular sizes, body measurements change. It’s really necessary to take your measurements and look on clothing store website size charts to compare them.

I do like the indigo outfit on you. There are details that make this successful I my humble opinion, the third piece of the cardigan , tucking the shirt, the belt adds polish, and the fitted darts streamline the top. I guess it’s just more “ tailored”, which highlights your shape without excess fabric. I always felt there was something missing when I wear a tee and pants, and I think the structure of a fitted item is the answer, a tee floats over, and darts seem to sculpt a form. Good post, you got me thinking!

I’ve placed four orders as the sales progressed! For me, it’s hit-or-miss with shopping online. So far, the perfect sleeveless shirt in geranium is a winner. I have a store locally, but not going in to shop, just return.

Great looks on you! I prefer cropped pants to shorts as they hide my many flaws. Talbots is a favorite store for me as the clothing is well made and stylish. I try to shop the sales and have found some beautiful things.
    Thanks for the informative post,

Great post Jennifer. You look good in every outfit. I love Talbots. We do not have a store in Toronto now, but I was sent a catalogue and it was like eye candy. I have purchased from them, but I wish they would include the payment in Canadian money.

Better drive to Ottawa. There is a Talbots at Bayshore Mall. Air conditioning is great. Mall is virtually empty, they need your business. I was in the Talbots store yesterday, 50% of most items, overstocked like I have never seen it before. Come!

      July 19, 2020 / 6:52 am

I currently wear an 8/med on top and a 6/sm on bottom. I’m 5’1.5″ and weigh 130 lbs. I’m better at 115 pounds, but, menopause sucks. Thing is, the bottom size goes to a 4 but I lose weight in my chest last so the tops stay medium when I’m at my ideal weight The rise in petite bottoms cut into my crotch so I look for short instead (thank you Belk for offering this option in some styles). Petite tops never work for me. It’s a struggle!
Thanks for offering a look at how clothing fits on you! I appreciate you!

Thank you Jennifer for explaining the size differences and what they can do…I am going to get the geranium top and do exactly what you said with sizing as normally I am a PM with Talbots but I am large chested (age and coronavirus stress) and I can see now a regular 10 will suite me better. You look fabulous by the way! 🙂 Love the classy indigo and white look especially. I love Talbots and the prices have been just amazing lately-my favorites which get me a lot of compliments (thank you, yes I will take it ) are Linen Pintuck Popover, Linen Popover Strip-and then I went back into your achives for January and bought the Patch Pocket Sweater Blazer in Indigo and black for fall and winter recently, at a terrific sale price. I will get lots of wear out of those. People are doing the sale thinking seasons as they are all out of red sweaters and I think Talbots do a wonderful true red. Thank you for the wonderful post. Happy sunday!

Jennifer, you made me laugh! I too am going overboard with the sales at Talbots. Instead of going to the store, I have been ordering online, figuring I will just bring back what doesn’t work. Surprise, surprise. Nothing is going back!
You look super in these classic, well fitting outfits. Enjoy!
P.S. I have begun to buy Christmas gifts for my granddaughters. Many items are ok to wear in other seasons, and Talbots quality at these prices cannot be beat.

Hi from hot and steamy Arlington, VA. All of this looks great on you. I like the idea of a polished casual look that is comfortable but still has some structure. These outfits really seem to suit your figure. I agree the current sale is amazing. Only the lack of availability of some things in my size stopped me from going overboard!

In the past I was able to easily shop the “regular” size clothing departments with success. Now, I am finding more options in the “petite “ section that fit my ever changing body. I am shorter today and my waist has disappeared!
You showed the difference in length of the bermuda shorts between regular and petite. That can make all the difference in a personal comfort level!
All your shots look amazing! My favorite is the combination of indigo and white. The geranium shirt is a beautiful color for you too.
Your blog is really helping me adjust to this ever changing season of my life. Thankyou!

I don’t think anyone could go wrong with the price they are now. Please let me know what you are styling them with.

I absolutely love these posts. I am 5’6”, so I seldom shop a petite size. Occasionally I have purchased tunic length tops in petite so they aren’t as long if I’m not looking for the extra length but loving the top. I own the t-shirt you showed and it is fun to wear. The T by Talbots line is a favorite of mine for casual comfort.
