Let’s Get This Party Started

Happy New Yearā€™s Eve! Iā€™m betting no one is sorry to see 2020 in the rearview mirror. This year has been the pits for so many of us it’ll be great to move on. I seldom make resolutions and I havenā€™t chosen a guiding word for 2021 yet. After the year weā€™ve endured, I’m finding it more helpful to focus first on what went right in 2020. Itā€™s all too easy to get distracted by the things that go wrong and I’m often guilty of sliding down that slope.

I propose that we count our blessings from this past year so that we start 2021 with a hopeful, grateful heart. Get a little journal if you like, and write them down as they occur to you. Seeing them written down makes them feel more concrete.Ā

Now letā€™s talk about New Year’s Eve. We’ve celebrated it at home for years.

Parties were fun when we could go, but I always had a hard time staying up that late. Now we hang at home and pretend we’re on New York time. We watch the ball go down in Times Square and call it a night.over 50 fashion blogger jennifer connolly styleing birdies loafers with black sweater and velvet pants

This is what Iā€™ll be wearing to celebrate New Year’s Eve on my couch. I found the JENNIFER CONNOLLY WEARING SPARKLY SWEATER FROM LOFT ON STAIRWAY

This soft sweater is covered with tiny little copper sequins that add a festive touch without being over the top. I can also see this styled with jeans for an easy day look. As much as I’m obsessed with my new Birdie shoes, they’ll be replaced by my black fuzzy slippers because we don’t wear shoes in the house.

Big sparkly earrings, a red lip, and I’m ready!Ā

Thank you so much for allowing me to come into your lives and your email box this year. Your comments, honesty, and openness have made this a place where real connections are being made. Our community has helped many of us to feel less isolated and alone during this tough year.Ā Virtual friends are real friends and I count many of you among mine.

Happy New Year and best wishes for a happy and joyous 2021 filled with peace, good health, and love.

  1. Happy New Year, and thank you for offering me a new creative outlet. I looked at my wardrobe with fresh eyes, and put together new outfits and accessories Iā€™d never imagined before. Each day offered a little extra spark. Thanks Jennifer!

  2. Jennifer, I have enjoyed reading your blog this year! I particularly like when you show an outfit 2 ways which allows for personal style preferences. It also shows how you can emphasize/de-emphasize body parts. Although not your specific challenge, my chest is large and I appreciate tips to play this down.
My word for 2021 is “friendship”. Although I feel strong connections to “gratitude” and “appreciation”, it is my friends and family that have sustained me through this most unusual year. Others, on your blog, have mentioned the importance of women friends and I am grateful for them and all of you! Happy New Year!

  3. Sandra Matthews says:

Happy New Year to you and yours Jennifer, hereā€™s hoping 2021 brings a fresh start and a break from this horrible pandemic for all of us.
Thank you for all your efforts on your blog. I always look forward to seeing what you have created.
    All the best!

  4. I have loved your blog this year because it was a bright spot every day in a misty gloomy year. I always think of myself as a loner but I realized this year that I’m not. I need the interaction with other people. I plan to get out more and have new adventures this year. Thanks for all
Ways being here for us even through the rough times you’ve had, I consider you a friend. Let’s do it again next year. Happy New Year Dear Heart!

  5. I so much enjoy your blog every morning, Happy New Year.

  9. Absolutely your best look! HerNY. For all! My word for 2021 is ACCEPTANCE. But gratitude and resourcefulness came in second and third! šŸŽ‰šŸŽ‰

  10. I had three words which I drew from throughout this past year. They were Enjoy, Evaluate, and Evolve. Little did I know how 2020 would test those three little verbs!
For 2021 I plan to add THRIVE as my word this year to begin a new year with added hope and optimism! May we ALL Thrive in all we do to be our best selves!

  11. Just popping in to Wish Everyone a Happy New Year! āœØ

  12. Happy 2021 Jennifer!
I have been reading your blog for awhile. IDK why it has taken me so long to subscribe. Today is my birthday and subscribing to you is one of my little gifts to me and a great way to begin the New Year. I love the way that you write and how you are always very honest and straight forward in your assessments, whether it be fashion, beauty, or just life in general. While doing so, you also manage to remain positive and I really appreciate that!
One of your readers mentioned opening the front door to let out the old year and welcome the new one in. My mother (English,Irish) used to do that but with one small difference. We ushered the old year out the back door and then rushed to welcome the new one in the front door. I havenā€™t done that in a long time but plan to revive this family custom tonight , if I can get a nap this afternoon and be awake at midnight!
Wishing a very healthy and positive New Year to everyone!

    1. Welcome. Iā€™m so glad youā€™re here. I love, love that Jean!! My husband and I have decided to do just that!!! We will show/kick 2020 out the back door and welcome 2021 on the front door. Happy 2021!!

      1. Jennifer,
We made it to midnight here in Texas and showed 2020 out the back door. That was such a good feeling! We were motivated to stay awake by binge watching the first 4 episodes of ā€œYour Honorā€ on Showtime. Brian Cranston and a solid supporting cast, top quality writing and suspense at every turn. The beginning is a bit hard to watch but stick with it and it just gets better with each episode. I highly recommend to anyone who hasnā€™t seen it and is looking for quality, thought provoking , adult entertainment that is also completely relevant in our troubled times.

  13. Thank you for all your great posts. Living alone during this pandemic your posts were often the distraction I needed. Happy New Year to you and your family. You look great in your New Yearā€™s outfit. I always liked a New Year celebration at home.

  14. Thank you for all your great posts. Living alone during this pandemic your posts were often the distraction I needed. Happy New Year to you and your family. You look great in your New Yearā€™s outfit.

  15. Happy new year Jennifer. I enjoy your styling tips. My word for 2020 and actually 2021 also, is Blessed. I am more than blessed with my family, friends, and our health.
All the best for a healthy happy and prosperous 2021.

  16. Outfit is festive for at home lounging. Looks wonderful on you. We too stay at home, big parties are a thing of the past. I am grateful that we stayed well during this past year and will continue to stay healthy in 2021!!! Many blessings to all the ladies out there and we thank you for your wonderful blog everyday!! Happy new year one and all

    1. Thank you Jennifer for your posts! I too religiously read them each morning while sitting next to my happy light!
The other thing that has worked for myself and my husband during this unusual year is we have a virtual dinner party each week, we dressup for the dinner, set a nice table for two, we plan our menu taking turns, plate our food at the same time, open our wine and turn on our eye pads. Tonight it will be dinner for 4 and cheers to 2021!!
Happy New Year to one and all ….

  17. Happy New Year!
It seems quite a few bloggers mentioned finding a word for the new year. I like that better than resolutions (which are hard to keep, and then I get disappointed in myself.)
We will be celebrating at home, just the 2 of us. Usually the neighborhood gets together for fireworks and food and drink, but there is no snow on the ground and it is not wet enough for it to be safe for fireworks, and a bit cool for social distancing outside for more than a short time.
I think of how lucky we are to have our health, and it puts the disappointments of the year in perspective. We missed our new grandson’s first Christmas, butwe cannot wait until the summer to move to be closer. Big changes for us in 2021.
Best to you, your family, and your readers.

  18. Happy New Year, Jennifer and everyone. I love the outfit you are wearing today. I like the look and feel of velvet; however, I am wondering if they are warm. Not really looking for warm. I am at a certain age.

    1. Happy New Year, Linda. Theyā€™re lightweight and not warm.

  19. It’s possible that you have already chosen your guiding word. Gratitude. Thank you for your blog and for you. Be well and Happy New Year!

  20. Last year at this time I was preparing for my annual New Yearā€™s Day open house! What a difference this year has been but like you I am counting my blessings of health and that my family is safe. Thank you for your blog every day! Happy New Year!

    1. Susan Gowan says:

Happy New Year. We also will be couching it with a pair of our friends who are in our bubble. Gratitude and Resilience are two of my word possibilities in the coming year. Ladt year was Tolerance. I am thankful for your style and life suggestions and enjoy your input every day. Tonight I will wear a long whie cotton sweater with black and white capri style pants and long sparkly earrings.

  21. Happy New Year to you and to all of us who enjoy your blog! Our NYE plans are to dress up, prepare some appetizers and cocktails and Zoom with some friends as if we are all sitting around enjoying Happy Hour together.

  22. Happy New Year, Jennifer! Thank you for all the pleasure and ideas you bring to us. I look forward every morning to reading your blog.
    Be safe and well.

  23. Happy New Year šŸŽ† we too will be celebrating at home which we have done for the past 10 years. This time, just my husband and I. Kinda romantic.

    Love and peace ā˜®ļø

    1. Thatā€™s a great idea! I love that idea. Happy New Year, Lin

  24. Resourceful! For me, 2020 challenged me to find my own path to deal with all the challenges that quickly developed as a result of Covid. We are smarter and stronger than we think. So, in 2021, I feel that this will continue to be my course.
I was resourceful when I continued to follow your blog. It provided me with not only great advise and new thoughts but definitely a connection with all the amazing ladies who also found comfort in your words.
My age will not limit my ability to be creative and continue to try new things and accept change. My grandchildren are a huge resource for this influence.
Wishing all a Very Happy New Year!

    1. Is it the simplicity and elegance that gives you such a youthful glow in your pick for a New Years Eve outfit?! Just stunning!

Happy New Year, Jennifer! Here in Florida we can enjoy a Covid-safe NYE with friends, outside. I will take your advice and put on something sparkly. I have old velvet pants from Chicoā€™s that go on for winter celebrations. I love your sparkling sweater. I may have to grab one, since I see itā€™s on sale.
