Dressing Room Diaries: Sherbert Colors

Dressing Room Diaries: Sherbert Colors

Happy Friday ladies. I got my hair done before my hand surgery last week and I kind of hate it. My daughter always tells me I’m impossible to please about my hair and that may have some truth to it but I choose to think of myself as neurotic persnickety about it. So after 5 long months, I got a trim and lowlights which ended up much darker than I’m used to. It actually ended up sort of brassy which I’ve never been a fan of.

It’s almost impossible to style with my right hand out of commission so I’m going to just have to “suck it up buttercup” and get on with things.

Let’s get to the dressing room!! If you’re new here, dressing room diaries is when I go into stores and try on new merchandise so you can see how it looks on a woman older than 25 who wears a size larger than zero. For reference, I am 5’4″ tall, with wide shoulders and narrow, straight hips. My arms are long and I have a long torso. The lighting is dim so the photos are grainy but you’ll get an idea of how things look.

These Chatham ankle pants are one of my favorites at Talbots. They’re a stretch fabric with a nice polished finish without looking dressy which just fits my aesthetic. The side zip adds no extra bulk upfront which is always flattering. These are an 8 petite so they run true to size. They come in a huge array of patterns, solids, and colors each season. This V-neck top is cotton and comes in several colors. I’m wearing a large in petite which is pretty roomy so it runs true to size.

I spotted this cardigan right inside the door and can’t believe how deeply it’s discounted! It’s a fun print with lots of cheery colors and adorable for summer. I’m wearing it with the relaxed chino crops in “watermelon”. If you wanted them to look less casual your could unroll the hem. I’m wearing an 8 in petite so they run true to size.

How to Look Stylish Wearing Capri and Cropped Pants

I feel a bit like an orange popsicle in this look, in a very good way. The tank comes in tons of colors, this is coral and white. I’m wearing a medium in petite so it fits true to size.  see it with soft metallic gold sandals and hoop earrings. These skimmers seem halfway between a crop and a pedal pusher. I’m wearing an 8 petite so they run true to size. This is the “sunlit coral”.

I am wearing an 8 petite in this poplin dress and would need the 10 to be able to snap it closed so I think it runs a bit small through the chest. Plus, the fabric doesn’t have the stretch of the knits so it’s comfier with a bit more room. To be honest, I might take the snap off because I don’t think you really need it. It’s also available in black which looks much dressier.

I’m wearing an 8 petite in this jersey maxi dress. The length just feels odd on me so I would opt for the regular to get some extra length.

*BTW- I’m wearing these dresses with one of my favorite pair of slip-on sneakers, which are in constant rotation this summer. I like them with tons of things but no matter how cute they are, I wouldn’t wear them with this dress. You can save 20$ on your first pair of machine washable Rothy’s with the discount code here .

This dress is a great one and done for super casual days. It has an interesting back detail which I forgot to photograph. A cotton t-shirt dress is one of those things that works for almost everything, except maybe gardening:) I’m wearing an 8 petite so it runs true to size.

I am wearing this dress backward. I didn’t notice it in the store, but when I went to grab the link I saw the description:) This just goes to show we don’t have to wear things in a cookie-cutter fashion. I love this dress and think I need to own it. I’m wearing an 8 petite which fits, even backward, so it runs true to size.

Just because we’re not going out doesn’t mean we shouldn’t enjoy pretty clothes. I know many women don’t wear dresses but they are the easiest way to get dressed. One and done is also one of the coolest ways to dress for those sweltering summer days.

What do you reach for on the hottest days?

Thank you for the great ideas. Every time I move finding a new stylist is always an adventure, I am also very picky according to my husband.

When I moved from one state to another, my new hair stylist thought I needed darker highlights. It took some mental adjustment, since I had been blonder for a good while. The payoff was that I could go longer between color sessions, as my roots blended in with my natural color better, which really turned out to be a blessing when the salons were closed due to quarantine. Give it a chance. Your hair could be lower maintenance.

I can identify with you about the hair. I almost never like my hair. It’s similar to yours in texture..very fine and difficult to get “fluffy.” I had already purchased the print cardigan and V neck sweater (in yellow) that you’ve featured today. I plan to wear the print cardigan to Florida when I travel. It’s great to see that you liked several of the pieces I’ve already purchased.

Hi Sandy, just want to share that I’ve recently tried Aveda Thickening Tonic on my very fine thin hair and it really fluffed it up, plus the scent is a light, lovely herbal that dissipated quickly.

I get blonde foils about every 6 weeks in my now light brown hair (I was naturally blonde in my youth). As I am now in my late 50s I prefer to get a toner put through in the salon after the foils as my hair tends to go brassy even with the purple treatments I use at home. I am getting more greys coming through now so will be interesting to see what the next stage will be for me.

Loved the watermelon and pretty sweater. My whole shape doesn’t work well with those styles as I am narrow shouldered and wide hipped. Re: hair… your hair looked very good. Under the lights, it didn’t look brassy at all. Thank you for a wonderful fashion show!

I am currently rethinking my hair. It has grown a lot in these past months, and it’s almost white. I still have some of the blondish highlights left over, and I’m seriously considering letting that go. Of course the problem is that whenever I see a mirror, my father and his sisters are looking back at me! My (much) younger brother remarked that if I had a bald spot, he would not be able to tell me from our Dad. Cheeky brat. 🙂

So, we always want we can’t have. I am a pear. Smaller on top and bigger on the bottom. Wide hips and thick thighs. I do have a waist, but after a double mastectomy and no reconstruction — NO boobs. I hate the fake ones. I am trying to find a “home to not dress frumpy after 60” page, instructions, ideas, etc. from someone shaped more like me. (also with 20 extra pounds) HELP! I can’t be the only one needing this. Do you know anyone like this? or Has anyone out there found help for this body type/shape?

    Happy Independence Day, Jennifer.

The geo-print dress is incredible and very fun on you. Perhaps, a platform sandal and a sweater over your shoulders or as someone else suggested, a jean jacket will complete your styling. I hope you grab it and have fun playing in it.

Dear Jenn, I am an older “version” of you! Wide shoulders, and shorter than you. It helps me so much to see how you look and choose clothing. I don’t seem to find my style and I’m pushing 80.

I’ve just tried Cabi clothing which is sold like the old Tupperware Parties. The “stylist” helps to put together outfits, so I’ve finally come up with a few finished looks.

Best to you and our country! Happy Fourth!

Everything Linda said. I was going to say exactly the same thing. Those were my favorite looks and I like your hair. I haven’t got my haur cut yet but my stylist us so good, it has actually grown out nicely. A person that can style fine hair is worth gold.

Hi Jennifer—first time writing comments but have read your blog all year!
I love the first outfit and can see that it might not be comfortable on a really hot day. I have moved inland and am experiencing much hotter weather than I’m used to. I’ve been wearing sorter skirts/skorts with light tops and feel sporty, cool and cute! I am searching for a summer dress and would love it if you continue with this theme.
I hope you recover quickly from your surgery.
    Peace

I chuckled when you talked about your hair. When I was able to go to the salon, I decided to do something different and have it highlighted. What a mistake! It made my hair dry and by the time four weeks were up it looked grey instead of blonde streaks. So the second time I went back and said I give up, just give me what I have been doing before. It looks fine now. I do love the two short dresses you tried on. I don’t wear dresses much anymore but I would try that t shirt dress on for sure.

I LIKE your haircut ad color! My own hair has become dark with blond highlights. Probably would be gray otherwise! The color choices this time ring my chimes! LOVR the black and white dress. The Orange wrap dress was too “wrappy” for me. It doesn’t do my shape any favors! Plus the orange was yelling at me! Hope your hand is healing.

With no intention to offend; in comparison to all the outfits you are modeling I feel the wrap dress with the flounce just doesn’t flatter you Jennifer. Not sure if it is the design or perhaps the color? Otherwise, feel the rest look amazing on you. As for hair; finally was able to get mine cut last week but can relate to feeling not so pleased reason why I was thrilled that my hairdresser didn’t choose to take advantage of our Government Emergency CERB Benefit program ($2000.00 per month up to four months) which would have either meant a longer wait or a hunt to find someone else.

I think the Maxi Wrap dress in regular length would be perfect on you. It’s very flattering!

I’m living in skimmers/petal pushers this summer, think Audrey Hepburn. I like the current styles. I didn’t like the old capris with multiply pockets, stopping just under the knee and somewhat baggy, but today’s style is right up my alley. I’m tall so they work on my body.

I must have missed your hand surgery. What happened?

Because we couldn’t get haircuts for months I thought I would see what growing out my pixie would look like. What a pain!! I had shoulder surgery a couple of years ago and I bought the John Frieda hot air brush on Amazon. I dried my hair to almost dry just blowing it all over with a regular dryer, then used this. It’s like a round brush and dryer all in one and you can do with one hand. It was a lifesaver while my right arm was out of commission! I discovered the comfort of skirts and dresses when I lived in Texas! There is nothing cooler for hot weather!

Hi Jennifer. I don’t ever comment on your posts but I wanted to tell you I love your hair this color. It’s very attractive for you. I know what you mean about having to get used to it. Give yourself a few days to adjust. I decided to go light strawberry red after being a darker brighter red and my hair got too blonde for me. I really disliked it So I waited a month and we just had to change it. And the last dress you modeled looks great on you. Very pretty. I might have to buy that. Have a wonderful 4 th of July.

My favorite pieces were the coastal print cardigan and the geo print wrap dress. There is so much you can do to style the wrap dress. Loved the dresses! I am leaning more to midi and maxi dresses/skirts in the summer this year. The heat and humidity in St. Louis are stifling, and I still like to look good even at home. I live in all styles of sandals during the summer as well. Thanks for all the choices you’ve shown. I had no idea that Talbot’s Chatham pants had a side zip, and I have shopped there for years! I will be looking closer at those pants. You look great, Jennifer!

Jennifer, I totally understand how you feel in regard to your hair. I have the exact type of hair.
I do like the color, it will lighten up with time and you could use a blue type shampoo to remove

We’re having a hotter than usual summer, so wide linen crops and pallazo pants with light tee’s or linen tops are my go to right now.
As for hair, I finally have an appointment tomorrow (after 5 months) and will get a shorter, and more layered cut for the summer. I’m thinking of adding some highlights, but that will have to wait as my stylist is still backlogged catching up with the 3 1/2 months of cancelled appointments.
Hmmm – I’m not used to seeing you in warm colours and darker hair Jennifer. I’m looking forward to your analysis of your Colours journey.

Hi Jen, I love your blogs and always read them. I don’t always comment, bit I needed to today , because I just don’t think the coral and the orange look as good on you as the pretty blues, pinks, greens. Orange and coral are warm colors and you have said you are cool tones. The coral and the orange just don’t compliment your skin tone. The others I love on you though. On hair, yes Im neurotic too. If it starts to frizz and “blow up” in humidity I’m a crazy person trying to smooth, straighten etc…usually to no avail. I must own every anti frizz or smoothing product on the market, but the weather always wins out. When I have a stylist blow it out straight it does somewhat better but not always. Right now we’re in a high humidity few weeks and I’m ready to surrender.
Now onto Talbots….I love all of these outfits, but find that some of the dresses look better with slip on sneakers than others do….for me, the shorter dresses (love that striped tee dress) look better with sneakers. Just a personal choice. That aside, You look adorable in everything! You seem to just know the colors that stand out with your coloring.
By the way, I love your hair today.

Lol, I wore the sneakers in to the store so I’d probably not choose them with most dresses. Happy Friday
