Classic Summer Shoe: Espadrilles

Happy Monday ladies. Is there any more quintessentially perfect summer shoe than an espadrille? Today I’m sharing a variety of classic summer espadrilles with varying fabrications and heel heights.

castaner wedges

I love my navy CastaƱer espadrilles, but the wedge height isn’t what I want to wear on a daily basis so I ordered a bunch of optons to find some lower ones.

striped jack rogers ankle tie espadrilles
PALMER CLOSED TOE JACK ROGERS ESPADRILLES

These striped ones stole my heart the moment I saw them. I didn’t know Jack Rogers even made espadrilles, but they do and very cute ones, thank you very much. These are blue striped canvas and they also come in. platinum leather…so cute too! They have a 2″ heel with a 1/2″ platform. These are very comfy but not for a full day on my feet.

TONI PONS ‘TREMP’ SUEDE SLINGBACK ESPADRILLES

These have a suede upper, lightly padded insole, and flexible sole. They come in 4 colors with a 2 1/4″ heel and 1″ platform making the heel elevation just 1 1/4″. These are amazingly comfortable and the suede is very soft.

TONI PONS classic summer wedge ESPADRILLES
TONI PONS CORFU ANKLE STRAP WEDGE. ESPADRILLE

These canvas wedges have a buckled ankle strap and rubber sole. They come in 2 colors with a 2 1/2″ wedge and approximately a 1/2″ platform. The fabric feels a bit more substantial than the other Toni Pons espadrilles and they’re not as flexible.

LIFESTRIDE CASCADE WEDGE ESPADRILLES

This canvas upper comes in 5 colors and one print with aĀ  cushioned insole. It’s a slip-on style with a 2″ heel and 1/2 platform so it feels like a 1/2″ heel. These felt like slippers from the moment I put them on so I wore them for a full day of running around.

classic espadrilles sandal
UGG APRIL ESPADRILLE PLATFORM SANDAL

This platform espadrille sandal comes in 3 colors with a memory foam footbed and grippy rubber sole. It has a 2 1/2″ heel with a 2″ platform and feels flat on the foot. It has a leather upper with an adjustable buckle strap. These soles are not as flexible as ones without a platform.

TONI PONS ‘VERONA’ WEDGE ESPADRILLES

This lightweight canvas wedge comes in 3 colors with an elastic slingback strap. The wedge is about an inch making these feel virtually flat. I could wear these to run a mile…just kidding, but they’re the comfiest of the bunch.

SOLUDOS LYON ANKLE WRAP WEDGE. ESPADRILLES

These have a notched linen upper and woven ankle ties. It comes in 3 colors with a 2 3/4″ heel and 1″ platform, making the heel elevation just 1 3/4″. The checkerboard back is super cute. The linen upper is stiffer than canvas giving them a dressier feel and the notched vamp is really flattering.

classic summer flat espadrilles
PAUL GREEN HANNA FLAT ESPADRILLE

This flat espadrille has a 1 1/4″ heel and a 1″ platform making the heel elevation virtually nil. They have a leather upper, cushioned footbed, and arch support. Super comfy and 45% off in this color.

TONI PONS ‘TER’ SLINGBACK ESPADRILLE IN TAUPE

These have a lightweight canvas upper, lightly padded footbed, and flexible rubber sole. They come in 4 colors with an elastic slingback strap that’s very comfy. The heel is 2 1/4″ with a 3/4″ platform making the heel feel about 1 1/4″ high. Very comfy and my favorite shade of cool-toned taupe!

UGG YARROW ESPADRILLE WEDGE

These come in natural or black canvas with a 2 3/4″ heel and a 1″ platform, making the heel elevation just 1 3/4″. They have a cushioned insole, a back zipper, and a grippy rubber sole. These feel very solid on but my ankles are kind of scrawny for these bows so I’d probably untie the bow, wrap it to the back and retie it there for a shorter end.

EILEEN FISHER WALI ESPADRILLES

These come in 2 colors. They have a cushioned insole, a suede upper, with a ‘toothy’ rubber sole. The heel is 2 3/4″ with a 1″ platform giving a relative heel elevation of 1 3/4″. It has a back zipper and the top strap closes with velcro in a great neutral color.

TONI PONS ‘TARBES’ WEDGE ESPADRILLES

These slingback espadrilles come in 6 different colored stripe options with a canvas upper and rubber sole. It has a 2 1/4″ heel with a 3/4″ platform making the heel elevation feel like 1 1/2″. These are comfy and the stripe is adorable.

I love canvas espadrilles because the fabric breathes and keeps my feet from feeling too hot. They look cute with skirts, dresses, shorts, and pants making them a perfect summer shoe in my book.

Are you a fan of espadrilles?

Thanks for reading ladies and remember to wear what makes you feel confident.

A very informative post for your readers perhaps, but I can’t help wondering how many pairs you kept, how many were returned, and how many of those ended up in the landfill. Unfortunately, too many people are unaware of the fact that that’s what happens to a high percentage of returns.

  2. Do love Espadrilles however don’t currently own a pair myself; however do have a pair of very comfy roped low wedge, single strap leather look sandals with a removable/buckle ankle strap that on occasion I just remove the latter and replace with cotton twill tape then tie that creates ‘an Espadrilles hybrid’ of sorts … lol! That being said; do love what you featured and for an added tip, one might wish to spray them with an fabric stain and water repellent upholstery protector to keep them looking like new.

  3. I have several pairs of the Toni Pons – I find them very comfortable to wear and I like the extra bit of height. I avoid styles with ankle wraps

Enjoyed todays blog. I truly like the look of espadrilles. They sing summertime. I have 2 pairs of Tony Pons and find them comfortable. Paul Green is a brand I’ve been stalking lately and saving for a pair of their sneakers. Wish our local Nordstrom carried more of a selection in espadrilles but sadly, no. I must rely on Zappos to deliver several pair, try on then return the rejects. Tried on the ankle tie style CastaƱer espadrilles yesterday but found my foot lifts out of the heel. :.( too bad as they are adorable.

  5. I am not sure I like the toe shoe ribbon around my leg. Although they do look cute on you.
Have to go try some on and see how they feel. Thanks for the cool shoe fashion šŸ˜Ž

  6. Love some of the Toni Pons espadrilles! Do you know who sells the brand in Canada?

    1. I’m sorry I do not but I am guessing your largest department stores might

  7. Wow! This post is terrific with so many options. I wasn’t always a fan of espadrilles, but have bought a few pairs over recent years. It’s not a style I covet, but they are cute and so summery. I had not seen the flatter ones like you show! I didn’t know that they existed. That was one of my “hold backs” previously; the heels were too high. I may have to pursue one of these flatter pairs. Thanks Jennifer!

  8. I tried on a pair of espadrilles and twisted my ankle while walking around the shoe department! I must be a klutz! For me its not the height of the wedge that’s the problem, it’s the narrow width of the wedge. I’ll stick to my comfy, safe Birkenstocks.

    1. Ouch! These all have a decently wide wedge but I know the once you’re referring to.

  9. I love the look and style of espadrilles, but have never owned a pair. Living on the Oregon coast, I worry about them getting wet in the unexpected rain. Also, how do you clean them if something spills on them or stepping into a muddy puddle?(which Peppa Pig would like, but not mešŸ˜†) Seems to happen to me every once in awhile.

  10. This was a VERY informative and helpful blog. Thank you!

    1. I’m glad you liked it

I have a wide foot (double-wide to be precise) so it is hard for me to find shoes that fit and are stylish. Some of these might work for me! Thank you for featuring such a great selection!

    1. The canvas ones are pretty roomy

  12. Great overview of the summer espadrilles. I have a couple of pairs and really enjoy them, none with stripes, but really like the look.

  13. Jennifer,
I’m glad you mentioned the platform height vs. the heel. Espadrilles can give a little height without an actual high heel. Great for me since I have a bad back and really miss wearing heels. Also good for pants that are a bit long and I don’t want the hassle/expense of altering. I’m happy with a 2-inch lift…makes me taller! Espadrilles have a solid feel to each step too so that helps.

    1. I love the little lift they give me too šŸ™‚

  14. Great selection Jennifer, I see a few I should tryšŸ˜€. I just bought a pair of white and blue flats and would love a heel.

I just want to take a moment and thank you for posting the Canadian sales on the weekend. I love seeing your US sales but sometimes itā€™s not feasible to purchase from the US website and canā€™t take advantage of the sales. It will be very helpful, thanks again and look forward to your Vancouver finds.

    1. I’m so glad they worked! Now that I know they do, I will be trying to find more options for you.

      1. Regardless that I have an U.S.A. address for online ordering, I too want to thank you Jennifer for posting the Canadian sales as definitely helpful when having to jump through so many Border Crossing hoops which right now I prefer to avoid if I can. With much appreciation. -Brenda-

  15. I love espadrilles!!! I have two pairs of Castaner in red and blue. I also recommend Vionic. I have two pairs, one in black and one in cream with the traditional ribbons to tie. They are very comfortable and supportive. Current offerings seem to be for this with ankle straps.

What a great selection, Jennifer! Wish I could wear some of those shown.
I have my own favourites, discovered originally at The Bay ā€¦Ralph Lauren ā€¦ open toe but closed back, in beautiful silk. I cannot wear slides since my left shoe has to be raised 1/2ā€ by a cobbler due to a disparity in leg length ( suspect it happened after baby #2 when my pelvis didnā€™t realign properly after his birth) .šŸ¤”
I went on to purchase all of my others at The Bay online, and they were easily fixed for me. The height is just enough of a lift, and the different colours give me options with warm weather outfits. Surprisingly comfortable, so always pack a couple for trips to look a bit stylish with dresses and skirts.
As an asideā€¦This misalignment has now , after 40 years, made me ā€˜off balanceā€™ and I definitely have an obvious higher right hip, and a bend in my lower spine.
To correct it, for years all shoes, slippers , sandals have to be raised or have room for a heel pad in the left shoe. Total pain, literally, since my right hip locks up due to working harder. But, I am good at spotting shoes that work for me and are comfortable, and keep moving with different kinds of exerciseā€¦ Pilates, cycling, deep water workout and some walking.
Anyone else had that happen to them after having babies?

    1. You are a real trouper, Cath!!

  17. Fran Russell says:

I love these! And anything that covers up toes, but are still open to provide ventilation in summer. The CastaƱer looks wonderful and I really like the notched vamp of the Soludosā€¦so flattering. I usually wear an open-toe Bandalino espadrille ā€œpumpā€ because a tie is not flattering on my thick ankles, but may have to revisit these. Thanks for the hit parade of espadrilles!

  18. I love the look of espadrilles but have yet to find a pair that are really comfy. You certainly took one for the team here by purchasing and test driving a dozen pairs.
I find the ones with laces around the ankles bring attention to oneā€™s legs and mine are not what they used to be, so I would pass on them. The striped ones are awfully cute! Would they fit a narrow foot?

    1. This was a great post on espadrilles! I like the look of espadrilles but mostly wear sandals in the summer. Iā€™m not a fan of the ones that wrap around the ankle because I think I have thick ankles. If I decide to get a pair this summer, you have covered all the bases! Thanks for the research Jennifer.

    2. I think the canvas is pretty forgiving and the elastic strap will keep them on your feet.

  19. Love espadrilles! I’ve never worn a pair with straps but think are so cute! They have always been very comfortable to wear. I’m glad they are in again.

  20. I have to be careful with shoes without any support as I have occasional plantar fasciitis…so no espadrilles for me as cute as they are. I’d have to wear a brand like Vionic.

  21. I have 13 pair of espadrilles, I love them. I prefer all cloth and rope, to keep my feet cool in the heat. I like them better than sandals or flip flops interestingly. If youā€™re visiting Europe, they are easy to find and cost less. Thanks for showing them.

  22. That Paul Green pair hit my style spot. Eileen Fisher carries a similar style and they are so comfortable. Women often stop me in the street to ask where I bought my shoes when I wear them. Can’t do the ties around the ankles. They never stay tight and they bother me, and with short legs they tend to make me look “stumpier” (that’s not a real word, but you get the idea).

    1. I know the EF ones you mean. Really cute.

  23. SuzanneGabrielle says:

I’ve always loved them, but not a fan of any that tie or strap around the ankle. Sam Edelman makes a comfortable pair in leather at a reasonable price and bought them in both black and tan. Since I live in south Florida, espadrilles can be worn year round. I really like the sling back style you’ve shown here Jennifer.

    1. The sling backs are so comfy.
