The Beauty of Decorating with White

The Beauty of Decorating with White
I love white. Fresh new white and old experienced white. Chipped, crisp, pristine or wrinkled…I love it all. I use a lot of white in my decor and am trying to add more to my wardrobe all the time.A quick walk around my house finds some of my favorite things in white.

I rescued this vintage cookie jar from a family garage sale 40 years ago. It had belonged to my husband’s grandmother and my hubs was attempting to sell some of his family’s “junk” to raise funds for his next year at college.

Not an overly sentimental guy back then. But who is at 21? Me, I suppose:-)

I always use white candles. These are in a pair of vintage French, bronzecandelabras that I found on eBay many years ago.

White alabaster lamps I found at the Alameda Antique Faire. They’re slightly dinged and chipped but I love the translucence of alabaster.
The top of the white antique french Trumeau mirror that hangs above my living room mantle.
The white Orchid I have on my mantle, reflected in my white Trumeau.
Two antique French Confit pots on my mantle. I move them around a lot, but today that’s where they sit.
Fresh white face cloths for drying your hands.
I keep them rolled and stacked on a hand painted Italian Tole-ware tray in my powder room.
A pair of white vintage French faience pieces that sit on my white Carrera marble entry hall console. They’re “chippy” and show their age, but then so do I.
The vintage, French linen covered dog bed that Lucy sleeps on. I’m in the process of reopening my shop on Etsy where I’ve been selling these custom made dog beds.
My white Carrera marble master bathroom.
Vintage French, hand loomed linen slipcovers on my chairs.

White marble floor in my downstairs.

I do use other colors in my decorating, but white just happens to show up in my favorites. What color is your favorite for home accessories and accents?

Your home reflects you, Jennifer, beautiful light.
Thank you for sharing it with us.
I could never choose a favorite color, but since we moved out of our home of over 23 years last December and are now in a transitional home until we find “the” one, I find that neutrals are soothing and our entire house is decorated in neutrals, with my favorite being white.
As you can see, my blog is a whole other story. hahaha I go all out with colors in blogland because they’re easy to change.
Two favorites here, Lucy and your beautiful cookie jar.

Your home is stunning! From the details to the placement of the white orchid…love it all. I’m inspired to add more white in my home now 🙂

Some lovely white touches in your home. The white orchids in the unusual pot look so pretty and what a stylish mirror too. I like the slip covers too – fabulous linen fabric.

Love your little touches everywhere! That mirror is lovely I am looking for one similar right now in fact. But I just realised I don’t have much white but I find white in the cold English light just doesn’t have the same effect. Your home is lovely!!

I totally agree with you about the light. I didn’t use nearly as much white in my home up on Vancouver Island, and the ones I did use needed a warm base to them.

I LOVE white too…and your white decor is wonderful…your bathroom is very inviting 🙂
And little Lucy how cute is she? No mucky paws on her white bed!

    • October 26, 2013 / 2:24 pm

Thank you Catherine! That was Lucy’s first day on her bed. She gets it plenty mucky, but the covers are totally machine washable and dry able. The vintage fabrics I use are quite sturdy.

Those tiles you have on your wall I have on my floor!!!!!!
Love the cookie jar and the sconce!
Not much white here across the bay!I went completely in the other direction! But I adore it!

Jennifer-what gorgeous images-and from your own home-delicious! The white looks so fresh and inviting. I love all of your vintage french pieces. They remind me of my first visit to Paris when we sent home a small container load of french antiques from the famed Clignancourt Flea market. Little bits of heaven.
    Lovely post!
    xx, Heather

Lovely photos of your home and as one reader said, I’am also going to use your powder room idea for guest towels. I agree about the creepiness of towels….love your decorating style. Thank you for sharing.

  10. October 25, 2013 / 5:07 pm

White is my favorite decorating color too! It filled my home in Colorado and now that we’re traveling in an RV – i’ve replace the standard boring brown couch with a white slipcovered one and the same with the “kitchen” chairs. It’s so peaceful. What fun to take a peek at your white loveliness – love the cookie jar and the rolled white washcloths. Well, love it all – but those especially tickled my fancy.

  11. October 25, 2013 / 1:22 pm

Absolutely beautiful – love everything and am looking forward to your re-opening your Etsy store. I’m not a huge fan of white candles though – I prefer beeswax in my own home. Going to use your powder room idea for our home and for my daughters, as I don’t like the paper guest towels in my home, and since my daughter won’t use paper – constant problem where to dry your hands in her powder room. Solved both problems and thanks!

    • October 25, 2013 / 3:09 pm

I tried the disposable paper and found them scratchy. It’s always creepy to have to use some ones guest towel. Who knows how long it’s been hanging there? I buy the large stack from Cost-co for this.

  12. October 25, 2013 / 7:23 am

I love things a little dinged and chippy too, so much more character. Lucy looks very happy, love her bed. If I ever get a pet again, I will need one of those custom made beds. 😉

  13. Oh my, Jennifer!
Your home is so beautiful and elegant! That Trumeau mirror and the vintage slip covers…everything…just beautiful! Can’t wait until you re-open your Etsy shop!

  14. October 24, 2013 / 7:46 pm

Oooh! I am a white girl too which is easy to do when I am living Spain, but not so easy in grey London (marble floors and white sofas don’t work so well in a colder climate). However I will also go for whiter interiors and accessories whenever I can.
Thank you so much for your lovely comments over at mine; really appreciated xx

I love white too and all your items are perfect, especially that darling cookie jar; and I have decided that from now on, I shall be “experienced”, not OLD !!xx

  16. October 25, 2013 / 1:23 am

White is calming. Everything is lovely! I especially love the alabaster lamp…yummy! Bonnie

  17. October 24, 2013 / 8:50 pm

So soothing and luxuriously comforting. . . .

  18. October 24, 2013 / 7:52 pm

Love that dog bed (and of course darling Lucy too)! I think white-on-white is my favorite look, especially when people add in texture and patina the way you have. Lovely photos!

  19. October 24, 2013 / 7:42 pm

Love your white and could move into your bathroom tomorrow!!! I love white, but there is hardly any in my house except for my upstairs bathroom. No surprise – I gravitate to colour, colour, colour. But your palette is so soothing….

    • October 25, 2013 / 3:04 pm

I’m always looking for soothing these days. I love and use color, but soft color.

  20. October 24, 2013 / 6:00 pm

Love your white post today Jennifer.
I cannot seem to stray from white towels and oftne imagine redecorating our bedroom in white…I am currently “working on my husband” to convince him of this!
In a dark wood panelled arts and crafts bungalow white is few and far between.

    • October 25, 2013 / 1:17 pm

But white stands out so beautiful against the dark wood paneling I think. White would be beautiful for your bedroom, I think.
