Dressing Diaries- Latest Finds at J. Jill in Cool Colors

Happy Friday, ladies. I’m used to walking into J. Jill to find a flood of warm colors, so last week was a pleasant surprise.

If youā€™re new here, welcome. A dressing room diary is when I go into a local store for a try-on session so you can see whatā€™s new and how it looks on a woman over 25. For reference, I am 5ā€™4ā€³ and weigh around 134 lbs. I have broad shoulders with straight hips, a long torso, and long arms. I often buy one size larger on top. Youā€™ll see me try on clothes in colors and shapes that may or may not flatter me because I want you to see whatā€™s in the stores and get some styling ideas. I tell you what sizes I am wearing to help you understand how things run.

J.Jill has streamlined its sizing so that every style is now available as regularĀ in sizes XS-4X. Petite and tall are still available in some popular styles, and all sizes are the same price.

PIMA 3/4 SLEEVE TEE smallĀ  regular / HIGH RISE BOOTCUT JEANS 8 petite / SANDALS

These are J.Jill’s bootcut jeans with a subtle raw hem that are flying out of my local store. This 8 petite is too large and short for me, but that was my only choice to show you, so I ordered a pair šŸ™‚ They have a nice high-rise and soft wash. They are currently 30% off. The 3/4 sleeve Pima cotton tee comes in 8 colors and 1 floral print. It’s low hip length, so you could wear it over skinny pants or leggings. The medium petite would be better for me because with 3/4 sleeves, the body length is most important. I’m wearing the clearwater color, which appears baby blue on their website, is closer to periwinkle in person.

SWEATER CAPE PONCHO one size

I tossed this sweater poncho over the look. I love the shaping of this poncho which will look nice over so many things this fall. It comes in this ink blue or birch heather.

COTTON STRETCH TUNIC small regular / SLIM PONTE PANTS small petite

These slim ponte pants are a deep navy and come in 3 other neutrals…currently 30% off. Their pull-on styling makes them super easy to wear, and the faux fly front means you can wear them with shorter tops. The fabric is fabulous for easy care and travel too! I consider this small petite a touch short on me, so they’re running true to size because most petite pants are too short on me. They’re also currently 30% off.

The white tunic shirt also comes in black, which would be fun with these twill pants in flax heather. The tunic is a cotton/polyester/spandex blend with lots of stretch. The 3/4 sleeves mean this would also be a much better length on me in petite.

PURE JILL KIMONO SWEATER medium regular / WEAREVER SLIM LEG PANTS small regular

These wearever slim leg pants come in 3 colors, I am wearing navy blue. I’m wearing the regular with the hem folded under one time. The petite inseam is a full 2 1/2″ shorter, which seems like a big difference to me. The kimono sweater is swimming on me, but I was anxious to try this yummy color on, and it’s the smallest size they had. The website says it runs true to size, but the medium has a chest measurement of around 50 1/2″, so I would suggest you size down.

EVERYDAY V-NECK PULLOVER small regularĀ  / WEAREVER SLIM LEG PANTS small regular

This everyday v-neck pullover is a great basic in 4 colors, I’m wearing navy blue. I just love how this sweater fits. It’s a lightweight knit that drapes nicely and will layer under things easily. It’s a great match with these slim-leg pants for a cool-toned column of color šŸ™‚

RELAXED TENCEL SHIRT medium petite / PANTS

This Tencel shirt comes in the most stunning delphinium color, white, and this blue stripe. It’s got a great relaxed shape to tuck or not. The center back length is Medium 27Ā½”, R 2X 29″, P Medium 26″, T Medium 29″. Surprisingly, these sleeves are not too short on me in this petite because of their relaxed shaping, so I think it runs a bit large.

Here’s the same poncho popped over this look. I love how the striped sleeves look with the directional knit on this sweater cape poncho.

SOFT LUXE BUTTON-FRONT SHIRT small regular / PONTE PANTSĀ  ON LEFT small petite / BOYFRIEND JEANS 4 regular

This soft luxe shirt is really lovely! It’s a woven rayon that feels like silk and is machine washable. It comes in 4 colors, this is the midnight sky. It has a subtly flared cropped sleeve that showcases your bracelets šŸ™‚ The boyfriend jeans come in four colors with a rolled hem you can adjust to your desired length. I’m wearing the brooklin wash. The pine green and iconic wash are also cool-toned.

PATCH POCKET CARDIGAN small regular / CURVED HEM KNIT SHIRT small regular / BOYFRIEND JEANS

This curved hem knit shirt is so soft and comfy. It comes in cream and this stunning, cool-toned peacock color. It’s a cotton/Tencel/spandex blend that’s stretchy enough that I simply pulled it over my head. I think this runs large, so suggest you can size it down. It has a subtle shirttail hemline that looks nice untucked too.

This long cardigan comes in four colors, I am wearing the blue sage. It’s a cotton/modal blend that’s thin enough for warm fall days. I have a real fondness for v-neck cardigans because they duplicate rather than fight with the neckline of a button-front shirt.

DRAPED COWL TUNIC TOP small regular / BOYFRIEND JEANS

This tunic top was displayed on the hanger outside my dressing room which I “borrowed” to style for you. It looked like nothing on a hanger, but I knew the cowl neckline would be a winner. It’s got a slight A-line shape, so I would not size this up because it has plenty of fullness. I would again prefer the petite one for me because the center back lengths are regular 29Ā½”, petite 28″, and tall 31″.

Here are some more finds from J.Jill.

Thanks for reading, and be sure to wear what makes you feel confident.

  1. Love the rich cool tones! I agree: dropped shoulders aren’t flattering.

  2. Gwen Marie Ewing says:

I love the purple cowl neck tunic! It looks really nice on you! Love that color!

    1. Thanks so much. I love it too.

  3. Thanks for sharing all these great fall colors. I really like them this year. Really like all the pants. Tunics just don’t work for me.

  4. I agree about preferring the v- neck cardigans! Just never seem to get a good look with the crew neck shaped ones.

Also, a cardi with a completely straight front edge is not my best look eitherā€” always seems to open across the front and end up draping at the outside of the ā€œgirlsā€. A v neck shaped front is easier to wear and more flattering for me.

  5. I want to add my thanks for your showing the cool colors — love them! Also a great pant selection today! I have a hard time with longer lengths as I’m a small petite. Is there a “rule” or do you have any guidance about an appropriate length for tucking shirts in — for ex., 4 inches below your natural waist? I want shirts to stay tucked but can’t abide a lot of ‘extra’ material tucked in around my stomach.

    1. Tunics are tough to tuck in for just that reason. There isn’t really a rule, but in general, the thinner the fabric, the more you can tuck without adding lots of bulk. 4″ seems about right.

  6. I’m also a fan of that blue poncho. I avoid dropped shoulders because I need structure and definition for my narrow shoulders.

    1. Agreed! Dropped shoulders aren’t overly flattering on anyone.

  7. Iā€™m confused about the proper length of pants. I bought a new pair of corduroy pants that are 8 1/2 inches wide at the bottom of the pants. They are not considered slim or a true wide width pant. Should I hem them short up to my ankle or touching my boot?

  8. Love these Fall colors. The blue poncho and the claret top were my favorite along with the navy v-neck sweater.
    Great colors.

  9. Love the cool color offerings, but my fav is that cool blue poncho. It goes with so much and it looks so good on you.

  10. Thanks for posting cool colors. I have trouble with most fall colors.

  11. I am truely enjoying the cool colour posts you are doing. I usually find a couple good pieces for fall but there are many more out there this year. One thing that still bothers me is the amount of drop shoulder tops shown this year. I actually picked up a sweater that was the perfect mint green, and cashmere/cotton blend, not trying it on, and got home to discover the shoulder seams were half way down my upper arm. As much as I loved it, it had to go back, I just look awful in that look. Just teaches me that no matter how rushed I am, I must try everything on. I did however find a pair of short booties similar to the ones you showed with the cut down sides, perfect.

    1. Same for me, Diane! I have broad shoulders and drop shoulder seams on any kind of top just make me look droopy.

    2. Dropped shoulders are cheaper to produce. Iā€™m not a fan with my broad shoulders but theyā€™re everywhere!

  12. Thank you for sharing so many lovely, cool color pieces from JJill. I have ordered from JJill several times, and so wish there were a store close by, but none are in comfortable driving distance. I like all of the blue tops, but especially like the color and shape of the draped cowl tunic top which is such a rich claret color.

  13. Jennifer,
Thank you for sharing the cool colors, it is difficult to find them this time of year, showing us where to shop is a huge help.
