Dressing Room Diaries: Ann Taylor

Dressing Room Diaries: Ann Taylor

My retail career began as a sales clerk at Ann Taylor, many years ago. I loved their great quality, classic American clothes, and not much has changed. Last week I was in while my daughter bought some great career clothes. I decided to see what I could find for my retired life in suburbia.

I’m a sucker for a great classic Breton (striped knit top). Most come with a crew or boat neck which isn’t great with my broad shoulders. I was thrilled to find this was a nice, heavy weight knit with a deep V-neck, both front, and back. The pants were their Devin, which they describe as their straightest fit. They’re slim through the hip and thigh which fit me like a glove. I adored them!

Next, I tried on shorts, which surprised me. I haven’t been tempted to try on a pair of shorts in over 30 years. They just weren’t part of my style, but I love these! They are a crisp, heavy cotton and reveal the same amount of leg I like to show in skirts; except they’re more casual.

When I picked up this floral skirt, I was sure I wouldn’t like it on me. But, I thought this pretty green on cream looked fresh. I really like how it looks! It’s easy to wear and comfy. It’d be great on a scorching day with flat sandals.

Then I tried on and fell for this white dress. It’s too long for me by about 5 inches, but that’s easy to fix. This is a versatile dress-up-dress-down style that fits my lifestyle.

I was thrilled to discover an entire Petite section right up front. The whole left side of the store was petite!

I will be back soon as their fall clothes come in. The colors are pretty; the quality is high, and the dressing room had wonderful lighting.

Have you shopped Ann Taylor lately?

As you say, they have great classic style and excellent quality. I also adore the casual cousin, Loft, and their brilliant solution of Julie and Marisa cuts. I’m Julie all the way. It’s such a pleasure to put on pants that fit at both the waist and hips.

I will have to try Loft again! It’s been many years since I was in. Knowing which styles got right off the rack is a dream!!

My favorite store was a specialty boutique I helped start from the ground up. Choosing everything, right down to the types of hangers we used! It was exciting to bring everything to the customers and see how much they loved it!

One of my favorite stores. As you know, I’m also in that retired suburbia phase of life, and yet I’m always surprised at how often I find the perfect items at Ann Taylor that fit my lifestyle.
As for the shorts, I purchased those white ones last year and then went back the next week and bought them in black. I love the fit and style of them.
Fun weekly series, my lovely friend.

I’m not surprised Ann Taylor is a favorite store of yours, Trina! You always look so pulled together!

Finally! Some real clothes that show off your cute figure, and clothes that I would buy! I don’t like the styles you choose to hide in, I think older women wear too much “camouflage clothing” and that is what makes them appear old!

You’re so kind Christine! Sometimes I like to hide and it just feels more comfortable! Looking older is never my goal now!!

I’m surprised to agree! Not my usual style at all!

It’s so much fun to peruse your posts – like shopping for new clothes without the hassle of trying everything on. And you wear them so well. I have the opposite figure though – tall and pear shaped….so I guess I WOULD have to try things on. Love the green print skirt and the striped top – especially, as you noted, because it’s V-neck. Yes, I’ve shopped and purchased from Ann Taylor for years, but haven’t been in one for quite a while. You’ve got me slipping that into my schedule now -there’s one not far down the road.

I hadn’t been in an Ann Taylor for years, Barb. I’m glad I gave them another look!

Those are great choices and look lovely on you. I like their clothing a lot but they do need to get more size ranges such as petite 16-18 and larger sizes.

I do love Ann Taylor—-especially their city shorts—the material is nice and thick and usually needs very little altering!!
I’m sure you already know this, but they are always having some kind of sale online…so once you know your size–it’s easy to succumb to the flash sales!

You’re right, Jodie! It seems thatall merchants have sales going. If you wait long enough, you can get it on sale. Assuming they still have your size 🙂

Those are the nicest outfits I have seen yet. They actually make you look younger than those big flowing tops. I always shopped Ann Taylor years ago, excellent quality. It seems they started catering to a younger smaller size clientele and I stopped shopping there. Miss finding great clothes. Reminds me of Casual Corner & The Limited when they had quality items too.

Thanks, Allison! Fitted tops need to fit me just right, not to be too tight.
These Ann Taylor ones seemed just right.
I also remember when the Limited carried great stuff for us.
