Dressing Room Diaries- It’s a Short Story

Dressing Room Diaries- It’s a Short Story

With 95% of my wardrobe packed and ready to move, I was unprepared for our 90+ degree weather last week. My linen isn’t reachable and I don’t own shorts which made me think of warm weather alternatives as I headed to the mall for dressing room diaries.

This is where I try on what’s new in a store so you can see how the clothes look on a woman over 25 who wears larger than a size zero. For reference, I am 5’4″ weighing approximately 147 (#vacationwoes), with an inverted triangle shape. My shoulders are wide and my hips are straight with very little waist definition.

I started with casual dresses because they’re the coolest thing to wear in hot temps.

This perfectly classic, light blue chambray dress is available in regular and petite. I’m wearing a regular medium which fits well but is a bit long for me. I’d be better with the petite, and even then, I might need to hem it. Skirts and dresses are most flattering when they are hemmed to a spot where your leg narrows. For most women, that’s above the knee, below the knee and the ankle. I’m not a fan of self belts so would change it for this woven leather one or this straw one.

This pale yellow Nic+Zoe dress is covered with an all over sunglass print in blue. It felt very Betty Draper-like. It’s available in petite and regular xs – xxl, 2-16W. I’m wearing a Petite medium and it runs true to size. It’s a midi dress but I would shorten it to just below my knee. I can wear slim fitting midi skirts but full ones make me look shorter than I am. It has a half belt sewn into each side seam you can tie in front or back.

This Caslon dress is cotton modal on top with slightly sheer ruffle tiers on the bottom. It’s available in four colors, petite and regular, 00-16W. I’m wearing a regular medium which is too large for me. The armholes are also too deep so I need the petite.

This button front, striped dress looked better on the hanger than me. It’s available in petite and regular, 00-16W. I’m wearing a regular in small, which fits. For some reason, a prison dress comes to mind when I see myself in it. I’m sure it will be cute on someone else.

This floral dress by Nic+ Zoe has a straight silhouette and small flounce at the hem. It’s available in regular and petite size xs – xxl. I am wearing a petite medium and would prefer the regular length. I love Nic+Zoe’s 4-way  cardigans.  They’re great for lightweight arm coverage.  I prefer it tied on me because it gives the illusion of a waist. This jacket steps the look up a notch from the cardigan and would be cute over jeans for a casual look.

This cotton tie waist skirt would be super easy to wear and almost as cool as a dress. It’s available in 3 colors, 00-16W, plus here. It runs large. I’m wearing a regular in small and it fits well. The petite would be too short on me. If drawstrings aren’t your thing, you can simply tuck inside or pull out and cover the opening with your top.

Shorts were everywhere so I tried on several versions. These are the cuffed Bermuda shorts by Wit and Wisdom. They have a high rise and 13 1/2 inch inseam. They’re available in petite and regular, 00-18. I’m wearing an 8 regular which fits but seem a tad too long so I would prefer the petite.

These longer shorts look the same as the white ones above but have a slightly shorter inseam. The shorts on the right have a 9″ inseam but I could only find a link to them in white. They all have the exclusive mold-and-hold fit technology and plenty of spandex for comfort.

These cropped jeans are an in-between length on me. They’re available in petite and regular and run large. I would prefer the petite version in one size down. This gingham shirt is available in regular and petite, 00-16W in red or blue check. I’m wearing a medium petite which is too small and short so it runs a bit small.

I prefer skirts to shorts but all these Wit and Wisdom styles are very comfy so I may reconsider them now that I’m taking up gardening at our new house.

Do you wear shorts?

Thanks for reading and have a great day.

You have good legs for shorts, but you still look classier (and cooler) with the dresses. As do most people.
The below-the-knee dresses would look better just a tad longer, like the midi dress. Or above the knee. I’m seeing lots of longer dresses, even on younger women.

Perhaps that’s why I prefer skirts and dresses. Shorts have just never been my thing.

I do NOT wear shorts. At 63 years of age, I still have nice legs, so that’s not the problem, I just don’t like the way they look on me. Like you, I have a nice collection of summer dresses. I think they are cool and comfortable and I always choose dresses with no waist. I often wear capri or ankle pants in the summer. At 5 ft tall my dresses are always hemmed just above the knee.

I think you look equally good in most of the dresses/ skirts and the Bermuda length shorts ( the length I wear here in New England, in summer.). You really look wonderful! The only two outfits I personally did not care for are the longish black sundress and the green skirt with pink tee. Just a personal taste thing I guess.
    Stay cool!

I’m not certain why I stopped wearing shorts, but it was in my twenties. I just never looked back.

I have yet to see a pair of knees older than 40 that look good. I’m not suggesting a 40+ woman shouldn’t wear skirts, shorts, or a bathing suit, just that older knees are not that pretty. Capri or cropped pants look better on almost every woman. I am 5’6″ and prefer to wear light-weight, full length pants or Capri length. The narrowest part of my legs is right below the knee, but a mid-shin length of Capri makes my legs appear longer. I would rather wear an ankle length skirt or dress because it makes the shoe choice less of an issue. Thank you for your posts. They are helpful.

I know my knees are certainly not what they used to be. I’m fact, nothing is 🙂

This topic is right on point! It was 30° yesterday…. I wore my black Royal Robbins shorts with a silk Kate Spade sleeveless top and felt great! At the age of 64 no one will stop me from baring my knees/arms if I wish to do so lol Good luck with the move!

I wear shorts if it’s so incredibly hot that I can’t wear anything else. Normally in the summer I’m in capris or dresses. I don’t really like the way I look in shorts even though my legs are still not bad. Even when I do wear shorts it’s only around the house or walking my dog, etc. I would never go shopping in them, for instance.

I don’t wear shorts…my knees are big and my legs are very short. I got rid of all my capris..I look so dumpy in them. I wear loose fitting full length pants and a-line (never straight) midi skirts. A surprisingly good look on my 5’ frame! It breaks all the rules but it works! Thank heavens. So many of the rules assume there is only one issue- like bad legs OR short legs. Experimenting with things that I’m not “supposed” to look good in is fun.
    Stay cool, Jennifer!

I prefer a dress in the heat, I feel cooler. I find my pear shape fits dresses better than most pants, so I’m glad there are dresses out there even if I have to hem them ( yes midis will get hemmed ) to my knee. The midi and long length are too long on me.

  9. June 20, 2019 / 5:31 am

I haven’t worn shorts in years, but like the longer version – I may try a pair ( I think we’re in for a long hot summer). I also like that floral dress & jacket as well as the slightly cropped white pants & gingham top.

Jennifer…you look great in those shorts…..my goodness…I love all the shorts on you and the white capris and red checked shirt look so great…..
And I love gardening in my shorts….there was so many years I suffered in the heat because I don’t like my legs….the good thing about being 60+ is you just don’t care so much what everyone thinks…you just want to enjoy life and be comfortable…..
I enjoy your dressing room diaries…..all the way in Canada

I agree. Life’s too short to worry what someone else thinks of our legs.

I always wear shorts because I live in Florida and I hate being too hot! You cannot live in pants in Florida in the summer! You look good in shorts. I love the white Bermuda shorts on you!

I live on the MS Gulf Coast and at 77 I’m into straight, long pants. No dresses. But I wear seersucker and loose drawstring type pants just about everyday in June, July, August. My fav is white and blue stipe pair, solid white, and ivory. They are cool and I feel comfortable, Thin easy to pull on shirts and tunics in turquoise, red and white and I’m good to go. Dress up with necklace and cute shoes to go to any events. 🙂

Just started golfing and everyone wears SHORTS. My legs are not pretty and I’m short. Like the way Bermuda style fits on you. Might have to give it a try!!!!!!

I wear skorts out here in the Wyoming Rocky mountains. They offer just above the knee skirt coverage(like the green drawstring skirt you tried) and also allow modesty to bike, hike, and chase grandchildren with the hidden short. They can be dressed up or worn with hiking boots! I will soon be 63 a size 12/14 and believe we should all wear what we like best, I even wear a skirted Lands End tankini for it’s ease and modesty! I loved you in the red gingham, white cropped pant outfit!

I’m not against shorts, but you have sold me on the virtues of the summer dress!

I wear shorts sometimes, when it’s too hot for anything else. Never for gardening though, as I cannot keep up with a kneeler pad (or it can’t keep up with me!). So the ground is too rough on those poor old knees. For gardening I wear denim capris that I use just for that. But I have an acre of yard, many gardens, and veg gardens too.
I like the red shirt/white pants outfit, and also the chambray dress. I agree about self belts, although I like the one on the yellow dress…More than just a string!

Great point about shirts and gardening. I did a number on my arms last week because I work short sleeves. I may need a hazmat suit to garden.

You look great in all the outfits! Here in the desert where it seems to be summer all year round I am getting lots of use out of my t-shirt dresses and white pants. I wear skorts for golf and running around with the grandkids. When I was younger I avoided shorts because I was too self conscious. At 68 I actually get compliments on my legs which always gives me a flashback of my teens and my mom trying to convince me to wear shorts and me balking. Love that sunglass print dress; I don’t own any ‘fun’ prints which I see all over here. Pineapples, flamingos, elephants are such cute prints. Trying to step out of my comfort zone so I may just have to buy something new. What say you, Jennifer, about prints like that?

I think the prints are fun. I regret not buying some jeans I tried on last summer that had cheery lemons all over them. I’m not a huge fan of prints but some are too fun to pass up.

First time ever input, but I like the chambray dress, and as you said, it’s a bit too long. And the yellow dress looks very flattering with the tie belt. I think you’re right about the Bermuda shorts. They look more flattering just above your knee. LOVE the red checked shirt worn either way. I’m 60 and still love my shorts because it’s sweltering in Southern Louisiana in the summer. I’m built similar to you, with broad shoulders, larger bust, not much of a waist and slim hips, so I love and appreciate your posts! You look fantastic!

At under 5 feet I wear shorts but usually Bermuda style or a little shorter. Love the floral dress with waist tie cardigan, it was my favorite and I could see myself in that outfit, as it would be super flattering. I prefer sundresses and skirts in summer. I usually wear shorts around the house and walking the dog, etc but for other functions I prefer a dress or skirt. Love your posts, I learn a lot.

I like the knee length shorts on you. I live in southwest Florida and wear shorts every day in the summer. If I’m going out somewhere I’ll wear Bermuda shorts. Around home I’ll wear shorter shorts. I wear lululemon “Tracker” shorts to exercise. I’m 67 and size 2-4. In the evening I will wear a dress or pants out to dinner.

why are beduins muffled? They protect against the heat. So why shorts, which should only be worn when
playin tennis or sailing. I see you more in the yellow dress or in the last pic.
