Dressing Room Diaries: Looking For Color

Dressing Room Diaries: Looking For Color

Our dreary weather has me craving color. Luckily it’s showing up in stores so I got to sample some for this dressing room diaries.

I spotted these pink chino’s right away and paired them with this plaid shirt. I like how the black in the plaid tones down some of the pink’s sweetness factor.

These cotton and spandex chino’s have a nice high rise and flap back pockets. The plaid shirt comes with a front tie which covers your tummy without having to tuck anything in. The same plaid is also available in an untied version here.

This gingham shirt is a black and white check in cotton stretch fabric by 1901, Nordstroms own brand. It runs true to size and available in regular and petite. I’m wearing a medium, regular and might have been able to wear the petite version. The pale purple jeans are by Kut From The Cloth with a classic 5 pocket styling and stretch built in. They’re available in regular and petite. I’m wearing an 8 regular and folded the bottom under. All these pictures make my legs look shorter than usual because I was experimenting with holding my phone at different angles but you can see how much longer my legs look with a shorter top.

This ribbed sweater grabbed my attention right away because I love this color of lilac. It’s a cotton blend by Lou & Grey. I’m wearing a  medium and would prefer this in a larger size so it slouches more. The pants are also by Lou & Grey. They’re a high rise, ponte knit with stretch and super comfy. They’re labeled flares but look straight to me. These are a bit tight in this small and I’d be better in a medium so they run true to size.

This scoop neck tee is not my best color. They call it pink honey but it’s warm toned so seems closer to coral. It’s available in 9 colors and runs large so size down. It comes in regular and petite. I’m wearing a medium in regular and would prefer the petite. These super high waist jeans are very soft and comfy. They have deeply saturated pigment and are ankle length. I’ve tried these on before and love how flattering they are. Next, I tucked the tee into these lightweight pull-on linen pants. If drawstrings aren’t your favorite, you could simply pull it out because the waistband has plenty of elastic to hold the pants up. They run large so size down. I’m wearing a small and could have worn an extra small. It may be too early in the season for them now but they’ll be great when the warm weather arrives.

This lavender colored sweater is by Nic&Zoe and available in regular, petite and plus. It comes in two colors and has braid detail up the front. I’m wearing a petite medium which fits perfectly so it runs true to size. Crew necks are not my favorite so although I like the weight, color and details, I would pass because of my broad shoulders. I’m wearing it with the 4-way stretch skinny ankle pants from 1901. These are navy and they also come in black and a gorgeous red. They have a side zip so don’t add extra bulk up front and 6% spandex which makes them very comfy. They’re available in regular and petite and run true to size. I’m wearing an 8 regular and like the length on me.

This classic NYDJ pleat back blouse is pretty sheer so I would wear a cami under it. It comes in tons of colors in regular, petite and plus here. I never wear yellow but this soft one is more flattering on me than I expected and feels like a ray of sunshine on a dreary day. I’m wearing a medium in regular and need the petite. I think it runs large so size down. These are the NYDJ Barbara Bootcut jeans. I already have one pair and love them so much I just picked up a second pair. They have a super high rise which prevents muffin top.

I loved this tweed jacket but it’s obviously miles too big for me. It comes in regular, petite and plus here. I’m wearing a regular in medium and need the small petite. It’s a great weight and a terrific color in Chanel type fabric with a hook-bar-closure at the front waist. Notice how simple alterations can change the proportions. I folded up the sleeves and jeans and tucked the tee in to make my legs look longer. The jacket will also be shorter in the petite version which I need.

Have you been craving color this winter?

Thanks for reading and have a great day.

Lovely soft cool colours for we cool-toned ladies????. I’ve found there is a pale yellow that reads coolish and that I can get away with occasionally.

I so appreciate how much effort you put into the dressing room diaries, and I love seeing what items you select. I’m pulling out all my royal blue tops lately as I’m so tired of black and grey and the forecast is for an extra long, cold winter here (sigh).

I’m really tired of black too and my wardrobe has tons of it. Blue is a great switch.

That last NYDJ blouse is great for travel. I bought one a couple years ago in a colorful print that works with all sorts of pants and jeans, and it doesn’t wrinkle. I hang it on a plastic hanger to dry and no ironing is needed. I always check for new colors.

Oh my goodness, the pale yellow and lilac tops really light you up! I love the almost coral color, but didn’t have nearly the same yes reaction to it on you as the other two (as you mentioned). These posts are so helpful, thanks Jennifer.

Loving this post of dressing room diaries. Like you I am craving colour in this wet and windy weather we are not enjoying. Time has come for more Spring colours to be in the shops. As yet I am not seeing much colour but pink is creeping in – guess this is with Valentines Day in mind. Have a great weekend. Best wishes – Jill stylishatsixty x

I’ve found that with my preference for a heel that is 2 inches or less, the longer tops and jackets make my legs look much shorter. This creates an unflattering proportion which is why I avoid them as much as possible. Shopping has been a challenge these last couple of years.

I love that yellow blouse! I am a warm-color girl, so I appreciate it when you show us some warm colors. That coral tee has my name all over it.

I thought that the yellow and lilac looked so pretty on you. I was surprised when the coral color wasn’t as flattering as the yellow or lilac. The yellow blouse was a perfect shade of yellow for you. I would love to have something in that shade of yellow but a heavier fabric. It’s too cold for such thin fabric here right now. 9 degrees last night. There may be another shade of coral that would work better for you. Coral is one of my favorite colors, but certain shades of it do not look flattering on me.

The winter here has been particularly long, and dreary with way too many cloudy days. I am craving colors like the ones you showed us here today. Thanks for showing us how these colors can really brighten everything up.

I’m catching up on blog posts that I missed reading while on a trip to Mexico. I love the lilac colour on you… very flattering. I’m also trying to add more colour to my wardrobe. I’ve tended to gravitate toward greys in recent years, but it’s time to break out of that rut!
