Dressing Room Diaries- Neutrals and Zebra

Dressing Room Diaries- Neutrals and Zebra

Animal prints of all kind are a huge trend this fall. Snake, leopard, cheetah, and zebra patterns are everywhere at every price. It’s a look I particularly like, so when I passed the Ann Tayor window on Friday, they called from the window and I decided to do a dressing room diary on the spot.Zebra print clothes from Ann Taylor on mannequins in the store

DRD is when I try on new merchandise so you can see what it looks like on a woman over 25 who wears a size larger than zero.

After talking about switching things up last week, I decided to give wide crops a try. These are the Easy Crop in 8 regular. The fit is terrific and the fabric is a great one to wear now and into the Fall. This is the 8 regular which fits well but feels too long on me. They didn’t have 10 petite in the store so I ordered it. I’m wearing them with this Zebra Print camp shirt in small. I like the softer contrast of black to beige rather than white. It’s a great fitting shirt and runs true to size.

I love wearing a cardigan like a pullover. This Zebra print Cardigan is a true black and white. I tucked it in to show the button detail on these jeans which are cropped. Go figure, these don’t look cropped on me. #petiteadvantages

This tweed top is on their final sale rack and super cute but too large so stayed in the store. I’m wearing it with the Marina crop pant in a regular 8. I love the fit, but they seem too long on me so ordered the petite. This is a very popular pant for Ann Taylor. Its flattering side zip is very slimming and the fabric has great stretch.

These are the Marina pant in 10 petite. I prefer this length and the leg is slightly less flared so a better proportion on me.

This polka dot shell has a nice tie at the waist for some shaping. You can see the detail better in the ivory-colored one below. I’m wearing a medium so it fits true to size. I could not wear the petite version because the belt would be too high on my torso.

This pleated skirt is the most gorgeous shade of green. I’m wearing the regular but would prefer the length of a petite. This length begins to look dowdy on me in this style skirt.

This Zebra print skirt is more my style but is way too long on me. It hits at the widest part of my leg which is the worst place to stop so I ordered the petite. It is soft beige and black which they call doeskin. The shell is a zebra texture in tone on tone black.

This cardigan feels like silk but is a machine washable viscose. I’m wearing a medium in regular which fits well because I like it buttoned closed. The petite sleeves would be a better length on me. The pants are a blue plaid, with a nice stretch and a slim silhouette. I’m wearing an 8 regular which fits perfectly because I like slim pants this length on me.

They call this an open poncho, I call it a Ruana. Whatever you call it, it’s awesome. Soft and lightweight, it works for summer air-conditioning and cool fall temps. It’s one size and available in solid or this print which is perfect over so many other colors.

And on the subject of a hot mess… this combo. The wide cropped pants and longer jacket are a ticket to stumpy looking on me.  I love the soft neutral color scheme but could never wear this. I asked if this jacket came in petite and was told no. It does, so the lesson here is to check online yourself.

This is still too long on me but a better proportion with my full-length jeans

If you’re thinking of adding some zebra to your wardrobe, today is a good time to do it. Ann Taylor is giving 40% off their entire new collection with the code SOGOOD. I love sales on pre-season clothes and this is a good one. It ends today.

Do you like neutrals and zebra print?

Thanks for reading and have a stylish day.

I’ve always been a little intimidated with animal prints but these photos have changed my mind. I think I am going to try some animal print things on next time I am shopping.

I like the cream/black version better and I would wear that but the wide leg pants are just not for me. There’s just something about big bust, thick waist and flared leg pants that make me look like a box. I do like animal prints though and zebra is everywhere. I love those pants with buttons!

I usually like untucked tops on you but the zebra sweater tucked into the black pants look great. I also like the zebra skirt on you and I like the v neck sweater too. Too bad that jacket is too long- we short people have such issues!😃

Your post was fun. We thank you. I loved your look when you wore darker crops or narrow legs. The beige and toast pants although neutral brought attention to themselves (were they wearing you?) And not your upper body or face. I have stopped wearing the neutral or fall colored animal prints, but am all in for zebra or black and white or taupe.

I love the Marina pant, I have it in black and white. i have worn the white all summer. I’m 5’7″ so the pant is a crop on me and it looks good. Love your try on pics.

It is a smashing success for Ann Taylor. There’s just something so flattering about the fit.

Love the zebra print and the houndstooth ruana. One of my all time favorite cardis was a zebra print. I wore it forever, but finally had to give it up. What a sad day. 🙂 Always appreciate your DRD posts!

I am loving most of these looks!

What fun looks…the skirt is gorgeous and you look awesome in the black pants and zebra top. Love it. So creative and fun. I hope you got that whole outfit!

Jennifer-you look fabulous in all of these. The animal prints are very classy looking since they’re not too flashy and basically classic styles. For myself, I’d only go with the full length wide leg slacks since, at my petite height, those crops make me look stumpy!

Great looks overall! I’ll be giving Ann Taylor a try once this heat breaks.

It’s all about proportion. Cropped wide legs pants aren’t going to look flattering on 90% of women, especially anyone under 5’8” and a long jacket or any top with volume makes them even more unbalanced.

I feel silly and unnatural wearing animal prints but I think they look attractive on other women. I do have a good quality sweater knit shell in a subtle leopard pattern but I just never wear it. Not sure why I even keep it.

I love the zebra prints, especially when they are more diagonal. Horizontal stripes, even when zebra stripes have a tendency to widen an image. I find the diagonal zebra stripes more flattering. I have several leopard print items in my wardrobe that I love and it’s time to find something in zebra!
I agree with you on the cropped pants. I prefer full length pants on me. At 5’4, full length pants are more flattering, even when they are wide leg pants.

I vote for the poncho, if you were buying something. Terrific!

Love the open poncho and am happy they are making a come back. With the exception of the (front-tie) ivory shell (due to its colour) and the fringed tweed jacket I think you look amazing in everything else. Hope you broke the bank … ☺. -Brenda-
P.S.: Re the wide-leg pant in the last two photos and its colour. IF you can recall its shade; how would you describe it? (My monitor is reading it as a brown of sorts with an slight undertone of green.) Thank you!

It’s deep tan but for some reason, I can’t find a link to it for you.

I like the zebra skirt and marina pant , and v neck sweater ( in black instead) on you . I wear very little black, and no animal prints, I prefer navy and greys. Glad to see the pics though.

If you do get the crops in your appropriate size, could you please show some shoe choices that would work with the wider leg pants? I found a pair of wider leg crops that work for me but am a bit puzzled regarding a shoe that compliments the overall silhouette. The tall models can pull off a flat shoe, but at 5’4”, flat shoes with the wider crops just make me look stumpy. Higher heeled shoes are less and less a part of my shoe wardrobe, so HELP! Thanks for always doing the research for us!

I will certainly style them and share. Lucky you, Linda, I am 5’4″ and need comfy shoes too:)

Wow, I’d say this try-on is a smashing success!

Jennifer, love the animal prints. Tried to order the cropped pants. But online they were only available in petite.
FYI the other day I was at a small shopping center and saw a woman in what looked like your Soma animal print nightshirt. I thought the woman must read your blog and got inspired!
