Dressing Room Diaries – New and Colorful From Talbots

Happy Friday, ladies. As promised, I headed back to Talbots for a dressing room diary. The store wasn’t bursting with color, but pretty close to it.

If you’re new here, welcome. Dressing room diaries are when I go into a store and try on new merchandise so you can see how it looks on a woman over 25. For reference, I am 5’4″ and weigh around 136 lbs. I have an inverted triangle body shape with broad shoulders and straight hips. I have a long torso, long arms, and very few curves. I often wear one size larger on top than the bottom.

Talbots is available in misses, petite, plus, and plus petite. As always, you can click the red text for more info and to shop the item at no additional cost to you. Thank you for shopping through my links and supporting my business.

WEARING –  ROLLNECK COLOR BLOCK STRIPE SWEATER  –  SLIM ANKLE JEANS  –  SLIP-ON SNEAKERS  –  ROSE GOLD HOOPS 50% OFF

I had to give these jeans another shot because they’re so cheery and my husband really like how they looked on Wednesday. This time I’m styling them with a rollneck sweater that has a narrow stripe in a similar yellow. I like how these coordinate because the blues are strong colors that hold up to the yellow. I am wearing a medium in misses in the sweater so it runs true to size. It also comes in a navy and tan stripe.

I have these slim ankle jeans in multiple colors and love that they’re not skinny so they glide over the calf without binding. I am wearing a misses in 4 and have the hem folded under about 1 1/2″. This 4 is a bit too snug for me but someone else took the 6 home.

woman wearing white jeans and pink poncho
WEARING –  CABLE KNIT PONCHO  –  DOTTED PAISLEY TOP  –  HIGH WAIST STRAIGHT LEGS JEANS

The color of the poncho grabbed my attention first thing in the door. It’s a neutral salmony pink that’s not too cool or warm. Since their ponchos don’t come in petite I sized down to an XS which is a great fit. The dotted paisley top is in breathable cotton/spandex with a bateau neckline and 3/4 sleeves. This neckline helps broaden the look of narrow shoulders (which I don’t have). I’m wearing a small and it’s too snug across my chest and shoulders so it runs a bit small.

The white jeans are high-rise with a straight leg. I am wearing a misses 6 with the hem folded under. I usually buy the misses because my long torso needs the highest rise possible and I hem them after a run through the washer and dryer.

woman wearing talbots new sprint fleece and pants
WEARING –  FLEECE  FUNNEL NECK JACKET –  BI-STRECH ANKLE PANTS  –  DOTTED PAISLEY TOP

This paisley top has every color in the rainbow in it so it will go with everything. I’m wearing it here with this super plush and soft fleece jacket which is from T by Talbots collection. It’s really, really soft and cuddly. It comes in black and navy or this primrose pink. I’m wearing a small in misses which fits so it runs true to size.

You may not be surprised to hear that I bought these pants. The darkest neutral I tried on but they fit like a dream and I know I’ll wear them a lot. They have a straight rather than slim leg and I’m finding that kind of classic pant the most flattering and useful in my wardrobe these days. I bought this navy in 6 petite but they also come in black and charcoal gray.

WEARING  –  QUILTED JACKET  –  HONEYCOMB SWEATER  –  MODERN ANKLE JEANS

This honeycomb sweater has a nice mockneck in a cotton blend that comes in 4 colors. This punch pink is a cooler shade than the poncho above. I’m wearing a small in misses and it fits well so it runs true to size.

The quilted jacket is a great little jacket. It’s a timeless, classic shape that’s perfect for spring or mild winters. It has princess seams and a waist seam that gives it some nice shaping and keeps it from being boxy. I’m wearing a small in misses and it runs true to size. The modern ankle jeans are meant to be roomy and have a flattering fit. I’m wearing 6 misses which is too large so I suggest you size down.

stripe shirt and wideleg jeans
WEARING –  COTTON SHIRT  –  WIDE-LEG JEANS

This 100% cotton shirt comes in this navy or yellow stripe. The band inside the color and cuffs has a contrasting polka dot fabric, I wish I’d thought to show you. They were already sold out of my size in regular so this is a medium in petite which is a touch snug and the sleeves are too short so it runs true to size.

The gal in the store told me these wide-leg jeans are flying out the door! And of course, being Talbots, they are a refined wide leg. They have sailor-type buttons along the edge of the pockets but close with a regular center zip. I am wearing an 8 petite which is a bit loose and short for me so I would opt for the 6 misses and plan to hem them.

woman wearing navy pants and puffer jacket
WEARING –  QUILTED DOWN JACKET  –  COTTON STRIPED SHIRT  –  REFINED BI-STRETCH ANKLE PANTS

This quilted-down jacket is super fun. Its cropped shape, horizontal channels, and band collar give it a very modern look. It comes in 3 colors, I am wearing the winter white in small which is a tiny bit snug but I wouldn’t go up a size. This coat only comes in misses.

PINK SWEATER BLUE JEANS
WEARING –  FLEECE WRAP NECK PULLOVER  –  SLIM ANKLE JEANS in RIO WASH

This lightweight pullover is incredibly soft and cozy. It comes in 5 pretty colors. I could see dressing this top up a bit or wearing it with fleece pants. I’m wearing the pink heather in misses small so it runs true to size, The neckline is just so cozy! The same style ankle jeans as I showed above in yellow.

PUFFER JACKET AND BEIGE PANTS
WEARING –  HONEYCOMB SWEATER  –  QUILTED JACKET  –  CHATHAM ANKLE PANTS

Same honeycomb sweater as above, this time in a petite medium which is an inch shorter, making the sleeves too short for my long arms. I’m so grateful that Talbots makes things in so many sizes so I customize my fit. This is the same as the blue quilted jacket above, also in small misses.

The ankle pants are a bestselling classic shape that comes in 6 colors, in misses and petite. I am wearing the Gypsum in a 4 misses with the hem folded under 2″. They’re a bi-stretch cotton blend with 6% spandex so they will always retain their shape. The high-waisted style has a smooth side zip so there are no lumps and bumps up front. The curvy fit version is here.

Are you a fan of side zippers on pants?

Thanks for reading and remember to wear what makes you feel confident.

  1. I love the side zipper also. Talbots is about the only place I shop because I am 5 feet tall or short and 110 lbs, but I am very stressed right now after buying a pair of the pretty blue corduroy jeans and they are 2 inches too long. I’ve never had a problem with the petites being too long at Talbots until now they have for all the years I’ve shopped there been 26 1/2 inches and now these are 28 1/2. Please, why have they changed the length of the petite 6 size pant??

  2. I’m short waisted so the side zip pants are ideal. No belt or fly zipper and button on the tummy.

  3. love the post! Talbot’s is my go to store. The colors on you are amazing

I like so many things you wore! I love color and am tired of seeing whole outfits of neutrals. Times are discouraging, so color in my and others outfits lifts my spirits! Thanks for the visual lift!

  5. Do love those quilted jackets, sailor jeans and that salmon fleece jacket.
    All are great colors.
Also must tell you, your shoes are so cool. I even liked those yellow pants and sweater set. I think the sweater softened that yellow and made it a real, really cute outfit.
Thanks for modeling these beautiful styles for us.

I’m definitely getting myself some silver shoes. They look fab’ with everything.

    1. These are sort of pewter and do coordinate with everything. I could not love them more:)

  7. Nice to see all that colour!

  8. Hi,
I loved everything you modeled at Talbot’s (my favorite store).
I love that blue quilted jacket on you. I think it’s that color is great 👍. I also loved the pink fleece pullover, so pretty on you. Thank you.

  9. I love, love, love today’s colors.

Wow my credit card is happy that it is expensive to ship Talbots to Canada! I love everything here! You look great in colour! Thanks I am feeling spring vibes which is quite a delight on a day of -30C (no idea what that is in F but way below zero)

    1. Wow, that is very cold…brrr. Stay warm

  11. I just went on Talbots site, I was interested in the roll neck stripe sweater you modeled in light blue. I saw that the fabric is 100% polyester. Can you tell me a little more about that? At this point, I’m done buying heavy weight sweaters and more interested in sweaters that I can transition into spring.

    1. It sure did not feel like polyester and is butter soft! I don’t always pay attention to fiber content but when I do, I am seeing much better synthetics than we used to have.

  12. Wow! What a post! Love color and love EVERYTHING on you!
The sweater with the yellow stripe with the yellow pants is a winner. It’s so pretty and cheerful.

  13. I love side zip pants but cannot wear them any longer because of a disability that causes limited hand mobility. Side zips take 5-10 lbs off and are what to wear when you feel plump.

    1. I would struggle more if the zippers were on the right, so I know exactly what you mean. My right hand is really having problems

  14. Thanks, Jennifer, especially the info on the ankle jeans. I am still not a fan of the yellow trousers — way too loud for me even with the co-ord sweater. I think to wear side zip pants you need to have a flat stomach, otherwise they pull across the middle. I’ve lost weight so I could wear again now but probably won’t. The wide jeans are cute but Talbots is putting non functional buttons on EVERYTHING this season. It’s super-annoying. I thought I might like the blue quilted jacket but really don’t. The ivory honeycomb sweater with the tan-brown quilted jacket, however, looks fabulous on you.

  15. Absolutely love all the outfits you tried on. I am a fan of side zippers. My favorite black pair got lost by the dry cleaners! Yeah, still upset over that.

  16. I love color (although you wouldn’t guess that if you looked in my closet), but – I was struck by how perfect you look in the white jacket with black & white striped shirt. The white really works with your coloring and your glasses. That’s my favorite of all these great outfits. Just thought you’d like to know!

    1. I noticed the same thing from the image, thanks for confirming for me. Winter white is one of my very best neutrals.

  17. I love side zippers on pants! They always give me the slimmest look and the pants are more elegant. Unlike you, I am always struggling with my weight, especially this past year. I still want to look my best. I too am going grey but not the beautiful white I see on some people. I really enjoy your color articles that address our “new” color pallets as we age. Thank you

    1. I’ve gone up a size in the last few months and am working on bringing it back down.

  18. Hello, I really like the lemon jeans and the striped sweater. That is a great outfit for you. Really I like them all . I have had my eye on those jeans for over a year. Just might have to buy them. Thanks for your blog.

  19. The neck on the pullover looks nice. I would buy that in more than one color.

  20. Jennifer, the wide leg jeans look spectacular on you! A perfect balance to your shoulder width. I hope you bought a pair!

    1. I needed the misses, so I am thinking of ordering:)

  21. Hate side zips! Always feel like I pull a muscle to get them up- LOL! Great DRD. You looked so tall in those wide leg jeans!

  22. Looks like you found the perfect solution to wearing the yellow pants. The sweater is so nice and the blue stripe compliments you so well!
I like the jeans with the side buttons for a different look in jeans. The cozy v-neck would be perfect for a day like today. A whole 12 degrees.BRR

    Hello
Would you say that the slip on sneaker from Nordstrums is a good option for someone with high arches AND foot problems?

    1. I can’t speak for high arches but I do have a bunion and it provides a lot of room. The insole is removable so you can customix=ze the fit a bit.

  24. Mary Divine says:

What I really two things about your posts from the stores is that you show where you can get what you like and you show the clothing on yourself. This is extremely helpful.

    1. Every outfit looks great on you today. I especially liked the yellow pants with striped sweater and the white pants with carmel jacket. I have always been a fan of Talbots.
