Dressing Room Diary at Ann Taylor

Happy Tuesday ladies. Thank you so much for all your input yesterday, it’s really helpful. I spotted a jacket on Instagram last week that sent me right to the store. I tried on the jacket and several other things. My hair is a bit flat because I got rained on but it was worth it to bring you this dressing room diary at Ann Taylor.

If you’re new here, welcome. A dressing room diary is when I go into a local store for a try-on session so you can see what’s new and how it looks on a woman over 25. For reference, I am 5’4″ and weigh around 138 lbs with broad shoulders and straight hips. I have a long torso and arms so I often buy one size larger on top. I try on clothes in colors and shapes that may or may not flatter me so you can see what’s in the stores and get some styling ideas. I tell you what sizes I am wearing to help you understand how things run.

As always, you can click the red text for more info and to shop the item at no additional cost to you.

WOMAN WEARING PURPLE TWEED JACKET for dressing room diary at ann taylor
WEARING –  FRINGE TWEED CARDIGAN JACKET  /  PERFECT  WHITE SHIRT / HIGH-RISE SKINNY JEANS IN BRIGHT INDIGO WASH

I love a fun tweed blazer and this color is one of my favs so I tried it with several things. It comes in regular and petite, 00-14. I am wearing a petite 6 so this is intended to be low hip length. Interestingly, this is machine washable! It’s slightly tailored but not form-fitting.

I’m wearing it with Ann’s perfect white shirt. This is a cotton blend with 3% spandex so it’s very comfy. It comes in misses and petite, 00-18, I am wearing a 10 petite so it runs true to size (TTS). These are Ann Taylor’s highest-rise jeans at 12 1/4″. They come in petite, regular, tall, straight cut, and curvy- 00-18. I am wearing a regular size 6 which I would have expected to be longer so they are likely meant to be above the ankle.

WEARING –  FLORAL ANN CARDIGAN  /  WIDE LEG CROPS

They did not have this floral cardigan in petite so I folded the bottom under a few inches to give it a better proportion with the cropped pants. The sweater is 100% cotton and slightly fitted. I am wearing a regular in a medium which fits but is just too long.

The wide-leg crops come in 5 colors in regular, petite, and 00-18. They’re a cotton/polyester/spandex blend with a high rise. I am wearing a 6 so they run TTS.

WEARING – WIDE LEG CROPS  /  FLORAL RUFFLE BLOUSE

I also tried the crops on with this blue and white floral blouse. It comes in regular and petite, XXS-XL. I’m wearing a medium petite. The shirt is straight, the pants are wide, and I am straight which is not a flattering combination so I tied the shirt at my waist to show that I almost have one :).

WEARING –  PLAID MIXED MEDIA  TOP  /  CHAMBRAY PENCIL SKIRT  /  LINEN BLEND WHITE CARDIGAN

I have several of their mixed media tops and find them invaluable. Their knit in the back and woven in front which gives a polished look with the comfort of a tee. They come in regular and petite, XXS-XXL. I’m wearing a medium petite. This chambray pencil skirt could take you to the office or dress down with keds and a tee. It comes in regular and petite, 00-18. It’s softly fitted in linen/cotton/spandex. I’m wearing a regular 4 which is a bit long on me.

The linen-blend cardigan comes in 3 colors, sizes XXS-XXL. I am wearing a small. I would prefer a shorter cardigan with this skirt, but my Ann Taylor has a limited selection on the floor.

WEARING – TOP ON LEFT?  /  COTTON CROP PANTS   /  TANK ON RIGHT?  /  ANN CARDIGAN ON RIGHT

These cotton crop pants have a nice slim fit. They come in 5 colors in regular, petite, tall, straight fit, and curvy. The regular has a 26″ inseam, petite has a 24″ inseam, and tall has a 26″ inseam which begs the question…what’s the difference between the regular and tall? I’m wearing 4 petite. They’re 97% cotton, 3% spandex, and machine washable. These are a nice alternative to chino’s if those feel too boxy for you.

The cardigan is another classic “Ann” style, this time in black in medium petite. It also comes in navy or white. The Ann cardigan comes in tons of other colors and patterns you can see here.

As occasionally happens, I can’t locate either top so if you find them, please let me know.

WEARING –  LINEN BLEND OPEN CARDIGAN  /  BLUE CHECKED TOP  /  HIGH-RISE SKINNY JEANS ON LEFT  /  HIGH-RISE BOOTCUT CROP JEANS ON RIGHT

These white high-rise sculpting bootcut jeans on the right come in regular and petite, sizes  00-14. I am wearing regular 4 so they don’t look cropped on me. The regular has a 27 12″ inseam and the petite has a 25″ inseam. They’re made from a new performance stretch denim that feels wonderful on.

WEARING –  PERFECT WHITE SHIRT  /  HOUNDSTOOTH CROPS

These houndstooth crops are super cute and very comfy. They come in regular, petite, tall, straight, and curvy sizes 00-18. The talls are only available in a black and white option. The talls have a 34″ inseam, the regular has a 27″ inseam and these petites have a 25″ inseam. They’re a machine-washable cotton blend.

My local stores are carrying less and less of their collections in the store each month so I think we may all increasingly need to shop online for the best selection.

  1. I love the tweed cardigan jacket. Maybe because of the color?

  2. Another DRD great styles.
    Love Ann Taylor.

  3. Cindy Casani says:

I tried on that cherry print linen top last week; they had it at my local AT. Thought it was cute but found it was too boxy looking on me. Did you think so too?

    1. The shoulders were too boxy for my straight shape

  4. I also like the pink crops and the pencil skirt. Looks really great on you. I really like the cardigan and I have problems with them being too long also. The colors are really pretty.

  5. Cute outfits today. My two favorites on you are the blue pencil skirt and the pink gingham pants with the bunny tied shirt. I appreciate the work and creativity you put in to making your blog so interesting.

Love your posts, they’re always exciting. I do have a question. Maybe others ladies have a similar problem: what type/brand/style of bra do you wear. I ask because I am very self conscious of purchasing any tops, whether they are t shirts or blouses that show lines. I find that I need pockets in blouses to feel comfortable. I have tried many undergarments, including Soma, but have not been satisfied with any so far. Expensive or less expensive. Hopefully you have some suggestions, or maybe the ladies who follow this blog might have e suggestions. Thanks in advance, I love just about everything from Talbots.

  7. I am drawn to some of the checks this year, which are a nice change / addition to stripes, but pink checks are not for me. Very Easter-y but … I like the floral ruffle blouse — but review said it was transparent? – and the blue jeans, although I’m looking for a shorter rise. I do like a lot on the Ann site, although I wish they were more eco in their products. I just realized that I have a caveat for every sentence here — oh no! I bought 3 striped tops from Ann earlier in the year and love them all. They also have a lovely red gingham dress featured on the website.

    1. It’s good to have caveats because you’re thinking things through and will buy more of what you love!

  8. I’m in agreement with loving the pink and white houndstooth with the white blouse. I feel that pink is a color that is flattering to everyone. Last week I stopped in my local Ann Taylor Outlet and purchased 3 items. Had not been in there before. Was pleased with their selection and they seemed to be well stocked. I hope store shopping will always be an option because I still prefer to fit things on before I purchase.

  9. Jennifer you look amazing in both the blue pencil skirt and the houndstooth crops, both outfits look so nice. We don’t have a Ann Taylor store near us, will have to check online. Thank you for showing some great looks. Love the floral cardigan as well.

    1. This collection is fun, which is just what spring should be.

  10. All the bottoms and plaid mixed media top IMO, look amazing on you. As to the floral ruffle long sleeved blouse; can you recall Jennifer if the sleeves were a tad too long on you as am eyeing another one but they only have petite sizing left which still might be doable but there is no arm length mentioned in the description and I do have long arms. (Thank you.) -Brenda-
Footnote: It’s the Ruffle Button Top Blouse in winter white that I’m looking at.

    1. Jennifer, please ignore my request as must had a senior’ s moment when re-browsing as was looking at the wrong blouse since there is one very similar to it. 🙄 -Brenda-

    2. They were not too long on me but I do have long arms

  11. Liane Brunet says:

I just love the outfit on you, printed Floral Ann Cardigan the wide leg blue pants. The bright colours in the cardigan makes your skin glow….I am partial to bright colours, I just love them on people and on me, it brings the sunshine….Maybe it’s because I am living in Canada where we don’t get that many bright sunny days! Today it’s snowing…in April

  12. I think you look great in that chambray pencil skirt—the color, the belt, just everything about it.

    1. Karen Kirk says:

I Agree! That skirt looks great on her!

      1. I love it too. I wish I had a reason to own it

  13. I’m joining the queue to acclaim the pink houndstooth crops and tailored white shirt on you. Would be interested in your perspective on why it works so well for you.

  14. Well, let’s just say that the perfect white shirt is a no brainer! So sharp, so versatile! I think the pink houndstooth crops may also be a sleeper that could quickly become a summer staple. If you paired those wide leg crops with a more fitted tank, you could then add that third piece? That’s, by far, my favorite combo for comfort. I am always looking for that style that’s easy to wear, no constant adjustments as I move about.
Once again, your side by side photos of tuck or no tuck are SO helpful!!

    1. I agree! The wide leg looks best with a fitted tank, etc

  15. Thanks for all the wonderful posts. What kind of phone loop grip are you using on your iPhone?

  16. Beverly Jo Anderson says:

My favorite is the pink houndstooth and white shirt. Either picture. 😊 super cute on you!

  17. Paulette Levy says:

Our nearest Ann Taylor store which I loved in my working years, closed ,sadly and months before the pandemic hit. I did notice that their clothing was mainly centered on working attire/ not much in casual-wear for retirees or stay at home women of any age. With hours open ranging from 10am-7pm, the store was almost always empty of shoppers while I was there (Saturday excepted).
The colors I seem to gravitate toward this year, aside from my lifelong attachment to blues, are pink and green. I still love beige with white too!

    1. I love beige with white too

    2. Ann Taylor closed all Washington state stores. I am sad!

      1. Oh no, that is sad

  18. I really love the pink and white crops with the white blouse. Both styling options are so flattering on you!! I think I will be shopping at Ann Taylor today😉
