Dressing Room Diary at WHBM

Happy Friday ladies. Today’s dressing room diaries is in a store I seldom visit. It’s on my regular shopping route but I never think to stop there so I decided we should see what’s new. White House Black Market is the sister store to Chico’s which many of us love.

If you’re new here, a dressing room diary is when I go into a local store and try on new merchandise so you can see how it looks on a woman over 25 who wears a size larger than zero. For reference, I am 5’4″ and weigh 135+ pounds. I have broad shoulders, narrow hips, and very few curves, I have a long torso and high rise with long arms. I usually wear one size larger on top to accommodate my shoulders.

This camisole has a lace bottom that is probably meant to be shown under your sweater. I tucked it in because having it hang below the sweater made my legs look even shorter than they are. It’s a great color match for this pullover that has a deep V which is low enough, I need to wear something under it.

I really love the fit of the jeans and was delighted to find the short (27 1/2 (inseam)  in the store. These are also available in long with a 32″ inseam and regular with a 30″ inseam.

This cropped cable sweater is a pretty off white. It’s also available in petite which would be way too short for my long torso. I’m a sucker for any cabled sweater and this one is no exception.

These high rise boot cut jeans fit like a dream except for the length. The color is a lovely deep wash, they have plenty of stretch but clearly, I need them in short with the 30″ inseam. They’re available in 3 colors as well as long with a long 35″ inseam.

These leggings run TTS but I would obviously be better with the petite. They come in several colors and do have spandex but the description doesn’t say how much. They do stretch but not as much as I like so they’re not overly comfy. The olive cable sweater is super soft and has a slightly cropped length so I like the regular for my long torso. I think it runs a bit small so size up.

This pleated neck-tie blouse has the same olive in it as the leggings. It’s not my style but I wanted you to see it because it may be yours. It’s got a slight puff sleeve and pretty feminine detailing which runs TTS. I prefer the leggings with the sweater, how about you?

This is the same camisole as shown above. This side by side is a good illustration of why the short jeans look better on me than the regular. That pooling above my ankle on the grey jeans just makes my legs look shorter.

The v-neck on this tunic is low enough to require a camisole. I wish they’d had a petite version in the store so I could compare. Petite’s are often shorter everywhere. I feel like this runs narrow so I would suggest you size up one size.

These are the same faux suede leggings as above but in the blackened pearl which is a deep gray. This tunic sweater looks like a layered top but it’s all one piece It’s available in several colors and specially priced in this soft gray color. It’s very soft and great for wearing over skinny jeans or leggings.

Have you shopped at White House Black Market?

I like the higher neck tops on you, they make you look narrower across the shoulders. I think shape and fit is everything, or just about. As you say, it is knowing what suits your figure weighed against what you like wearing, not always the same thing.

As just currently viewing this on my cell phone, shall just comment on the use of the lace trimmed camisole. Personally they are a favorite of mine for adding a touch of femininity to an outfit. i.e.: Under a boyfriend blazer.

Jennifer……I really like the green on you and the flowery shirt was my favorite. Glad you visited a WHBM.

None of these are quite my style. That said I do like whbm. Everything I’ve purchased them fits and wears well. And I love their service.

    Hello
I don’t really care to much for any of the outfits. If I had to choose I would go with the light blue sweater and darker Jean. I don’t care for olive green very much. I think the blouse is unattractive. Its a tad narrowly. I also like the cable sweater not on me but on other people.
    Happy Valentines Day!

Have never been in a WHBM. Always considered it a Sorority girls shop because only people I knew that shopped there were my friends daughters😄
Love the last outfit. But not sure about faux suede leggings on my apple body. The blue V neck is lovely on you, not a color I can wear.
I think the floral blouse is a little “mumsy “.
I do love the Dressing Room Diaries best of all your posts

I like the white cable knit sweater with the light grey jeans more than with the dark washed jeans. I’m beginning to realize I like low contrast in my clothes. I’ve never really paid that much attention but being short and short waisted at 5:3” I think I just look taller in low contrast and I particularly like low contrast in lighter colors. I like the shorter over the longer idea in tops.

Jennifer, I understand that the floral blouse is not what you usually wear as I’m not drawn to that type of top either. But it looks wonderful on you! An effortless look that flatters you. I love your Dressing Room Diaries!

The best outfit is the last one. The neckline of the top is flattering and skims past the middle. The proportions are beautiful on you.

I do like the cropped cable sweater but I’m not a fan of the deep v-neck with wide shoulders. Perhaps a blouse underneath or a pretty scarf?

I think the long sweaters with a tight band at the bottom, especially with a deep v-neck, creates unflattering proportions for those of us with slim hips and wider shoulders.

Just no to leggings with creases and lace camisoles!

I’m not a fan of feminine flowy blouses either!

I haven’t been to WHBM for years. It looks like their style has evolved to include more classics so perhaps I’ll give them a try again!

Well I guess I’m the dissenter. I agree with you Jennifer, about the blouse. It’s a pretty blouse, but it’s not your style. I wouldn’t wear it either, no matter how good it looked on me. I just wouldn’t feel like myself. Aren’t we lucky there are so many style choices and can find the right “fit?”

I loved the grey outfit on you. The lines are simple and complimentary. Your glasses even matched your outfit. To me, wearing a camisole was out dated and a thin white shirt would have looked better.

I concur with the others. The flowered blouse is the best looking top on you.

Okay, let me be the one thousandth person to say that I love the blouse on you! My favorite style leans toward bohemian so I like seeing you try that out a bit. However, I hate the seam running down the front of the green leggings and wish designers would quit doing that. The high low grey sweater is very appealing. I have never gone into a WHBM store and don’t know why, but once life normalizes I am now encouraged to check them out.

Awesome! I love to encourage ladies to step out of their comfort zone and try new stores. Now for me, this blouse was way out of my comfort zone. 🙂

    Love your hair!

Not sure about the clothes, the dark bootcut jeans with the heavily cabled vneck sweater was the only outfit that appealed to me. The darker legs teamed with a shorter sweater gave a boost to the overall longer leaner look.

    Your shoes are spot on!

I also rarely go into whbm… however, I did get a beautiful pair of grey jeans there once. They are my favorite! Re: your try ons today: I loved the gray two layer top with the dark gray jeans. You looked balanced , and the top gracefully skimmed your body.

Sorry to say but the only piece I liked was the flowered top. I thought the sweaters too long and fitted through hips. The suede leggings seem puckered on the bottom or something strange is going on there.

I’m laughing because I’m reading all the comments and discovering others saying exactly what I was thinking, that I loved the flowered blouse on you—-and I don’t usually care for prints or overly feminine looks.

I also love the blouse over the leggings. It is so flattering and feminine on you. Longer tunic sweaters do not look good on me, gives the appearance of one straight line down my body. But as you say, we should wear what we like and that is what I will do.

Many pretty things you’re showing us. Love the blouse as many others have mentioned! I do notice things seem to be cut a bit narrow and a bit longer than most popular stores. That could be problematic fir those of us in the 5 ft 3-4-5 height. I have rarely needed short in any pant but it seems I would here. It also seems that several of their cute sweaters that fit nicely in shoulders and chest do pull near the hip area?

They definitely have a slimmer cut than their sister store, Chico’s.

I love the green color on you! The flowy blouse was flattering but I couldn’t wear it either. Too lightweight and flowy.

Yes!! Me too. Long torso but I’m short. Chico’s does that too for a lot of their pants and jeans. I wish more brands would do this.

As I was reading, I thought that blouse was so attractive on you, and then reading the comments I realized that maybe it is just my style influencing my choice. It does look to balance out your hips nicely if that is your concern. I am the opposite of you, smaller shoulders and bigger hips so try to imaging styling a bit different. I am also not a fan of the bottom layer peeking out of the bottom of the top. The dark wash jeans (a bit shorter) are right up my alley so to speak as I am getting rid of almost all my leggings. I have never tried anything from WHBM but worth a try. Thanks for taking the time for us.

I love WHBM. ESPECIALLY their jeans. I am very careful of their prints because I don’t like a lot of them. For me, their sizing is consistent and I like my clothing to be more fitted with a touch of trendy. I love the short length of jeans to get an ankle length which I think is most flattering on me. I rarely need petites because I have a short torso and I think their tops and jackets are typically shorter in general. It is nice to have the petite option when I do need it like for dresses.

I agree too about the blouse. Very pretty on you. I like tops like that because they are very feminine and flattering. Some of the other sweaters look too tight especially across the hips, my worst area! I have a few items from WHBM that I really like, but it’s hit or miss. They almost seem too dressy for me now. Thanks for sharing your finds!

I haven’t shopped there because I thought their clothes from the window looked too young for me. Now I see that was the wrong impression. So I might try going in. I think the olive sweater and leggings look great. The outfit makes you look both slimmer and taller, imo. How would you accessorize it?

I also think you look great in the flowered top, but I feel the same way you do about that style of top on me. I love the clothes I see people wearing from Chico’s, but unfortunately, their unusual sizing doesn’t run small enough for me. I recently bought a beautiful faux suede jacket from WHBM that is similar to some of the beautiful jackets that Chico’s has. Thank you for showing some WHBM clothing!

I seem to have a mixed bag of feelings about these featured looks today. As beautiful as a camisole may be, I have never cared for that look of it peeking out under a sweater or top. I would prefer to add another accessory, maybe a scarf or necklace. Also the olive color in the leggings is a nice color but they appear to have a front seam. The detail in the olive sweater and these leggings is an overload for me. I need much more of a streamlined style that I can accessorize as needed.
Most of the featured styles today are more form fitting and for me, I am more comfortable in clothing that skims the body. Year around, I am inclined to create an outfit including that third piece.
Thank you for doing another fun DRD!

I’ve got to agree with Shari, I love the flowered top on you! It looks so pretty and feminine. But I understand if it is not your style as I have always read you need a white button down in your wardrobe and have never felt comfortable in them. Don’t like gaping buttons and I always feel too masculine in one. We all have our preferences.

I sometimes buy the blouses like this one and love how they look in stores (so many beautiful colors and prints), but don’t wear them often. They dwarf my petite size. I prefer more fitted things. I love the blue sweater and the white cable knit looks great on you. I agree that leggings have to be super comfy or I dont wear them. Thanks for the new view of these stores.

    They look great on you.
I live in the UK which does not have WHBM, but whenever we visit Florida, I always leave room in my cases for WHBM purchases. It is my joint favourite clothes store (together with Tommy Bahamas!) and I always stock up from both. I love the quality and fit – and I know it’s very unlikely that I’ll meet anyone else in the UK wearing the same clothes as me!
I’m feeling very envious as we’re not allowed to travel at the moment and a 3 weeks road trip through California was cancelled last year 😞!

I almost never shop at WHBM but my sister does regularly. I have a pair of white jeans I absolutely love from them. I’ve had challenges with the right size there but I like their clothing. You look fabulous in the blue sweaters. I agree that the blouse with the leggings is more flattering than the sweater. I also love anything with a cable knit! I really appreciate Dressing Room diaries as you note how things fit on you and what to watch for with our body shapes. I liked the comparison of the slim jeans and how they flatter (or not) your legs. I’ll be checking out WHBM for my jeans quest!
