Dressing Room Diary: Athleisure Looks From Talbots

Athleisure is certainly here to stay. It fits many of our casual lifestyles and is often the comfiest way to dress. I prefer a more polished-looking athleisure, and that’s just what T Talbots offers. Let’s take a look at a few of the latest athleisure looks from Talbots.

dressing room diary is when I go into a local store for a try-on session so you can see what’s available and get ideas for how to style them. For reference, I’m 5ā€™4ā€³ and weigh around 148 lbs. I have broad shoulders, straight hips, a long torso, and long arms. I often wear one size larger on top. I mention what size Iā€™m wearing to help you understand how things run. I occasionally find things that fit my style recipe which may come home with me. But since I prefer to keep a curated wardrobe, I don’t buy everything I like. Most Talbots garments are available in misses, petite, plus, and plus petite.

COOLMAX JOHNNY COLLAR STRIPED SWEATER size S / EVERYDAY STRAIGHT LEG ANKLE PANTS size S

It’s hard to see in this picture, but the sweater stripe and pants are both black. I have these pants in navy, and love them! They’re a nice thick stretch fabric that I’ve worn for years. You can dress these up for lunch or dinner out, and you could also wear them to yoga class. They’d also be great for travel because spandex helps them retain their shape. They’re primarily cotton with some spandex for comfort.

I’m wearing them with this striped pullover in an open-weave knit. (wearing this tee underneath). You could also wear this over a tank top but just know you will want something underneath. Its raglan sleeves are a delightful touch after years of dropped shoulders, which don’t flatter many of us. The Coolmax yarn is designed to keep us cool and comfortable.

EVERYDAY STRETCH SKORT size PM / RIBBED HALF-ZIP PULLOVER size M

I would have tried on this half-zip pullover in petite, but my store didn’t stock it. It turns out more and more that we must order things online to get the size we need. It’s a great little top, but this body is too long on me, hence the rumpling around my waist. The Lavender is clear, bright, and happy for spring. T Talbots has a lot of this color in their latest collection, so you can easily mix and match things.

I’m styling it with this everyday skort. This felt a bit loose on me, but someone had already snapped up the PS. It hits above the knee and also comes in navy or black. If shorts aren’t your thing, skorts are a great option that’ll feel just as cool. Their inner shorts protect your modesty plus prevent inner thigh chaffing!

HOODED RIBBED PULLOVER size PM / OUT AND ABOUT STRETCH JOGGER size PM

These black pants look similar to the pair I shared above, but these ones are more casual. They have a drawstring at the waist and are a polyester/spandex blend, which feels more like workout fabric. They’re also a lighter weight and less substantial feeling. These are black and they also come in gray or navy.

The hooded pullover is a bright spearment green stripe and also available in black and white. It has a slightly boxy fit that works well over a slimmer pant or shorts and you could tuck the front into jeans, etc. The fabric has a ribbed terry cloth type texture that’s perfcet for spring. Cozy, but not too hot.

COOLMAX SNAP FRONT SWEATER JACKET size PM / NEW ENGLAND CHINO’S INDIGO WASH size 8P / SUPERSOFT JERSEY SHORT SLEEVE T size S

Here’s more in this great lavender. This flattering snap front sweater jacket is in the breathable Coolmax fabric so it’s great for spring. This cardigan seems to be flying out the door and is selling out in many sizes. It’s soft, comfy and a great piece to wear over so many things.

I styled it over a simple white tee, and these New England chinos in the indigo wash. The fabric is a 100% cotton and the leg is on the wide side, but not wide enough to flap when you walk. The website lists them as having stretch, but since there is no spandex, it’s just ease and give, rather than having actual stretch.

The website shows this length on the model so I tried to get past feeling goofy in this length, but I couldn’t. With a slightly wider leg, I feel these either need to be a few inches shorter or longer on me…that’s part of the hassel of sitting right on ther border between petite and misses.

COSY CRUSH JOHNNY COLLAR PULLOVER size PM / LIGHTWEIGHT STRECH WIDE LEG CARGO PANTS size PM

More lavender, this time in a wide leg, cropped cargo pant that are as comfy as your favorite pair of jammies. The fabric is silky smooth, cool to the touch and perfectly packable. I have a very similar pair in black that I wear walking in the spring and summer. It comes in three colors and the wrinkle-resistant fabric provides UPF 50+ sun protection. The inseam of these is 24″ in misses, 21″ in petite, 24″ in plus and 21″ in plus petite.

TECH PIQUƉ HALF-ZIP PULLOVER size PM / EVERYDAY STRAIGHT LEG ANKLE PANTS size S

This piquĆ© half-zip pullover has dropped shoulders and a boxy fit, accented with a pop of bright green in the zipper and inner collar. It also comes in the green accented with a blue zipper. This has 3/4 sleeves and a high-low hem that’s just slightly longer in the back. I found it runs large and could have easily sized down to an XS. I wish the green had been in my store because I would have loved to try it on for you.

Have you explored the T Talbots line? Do you mix it into your regular weardrobe?

  1. I love elevated athleisure, and my faves are the T line from Talbots and also Athleta. I do mix them up ā€¦ jeans or pants with an atheisure top, leggings or yoga pants with a nice sweater or oversized shirt (long top for the leggings). I find ā€œelevatedā€ in athleisure means a bit of detail and really good quality fabrics. I watch fit ā€¦ much athleisure runs tight/fitted, and I try to hit the sweet spot of fitted but skimming the body rather than hugging it.

    1. I love Athleta too. Great fabrics.

I love all the looks that you show in this article. The wide leg pants are so comfortable. I have not heard of Talbots T- line so I will definitely look into it. Can you possibly do an article on women that are in there 75 to 85 year range? I am over 80 and 5ā€˜4ā€œ tall and weigh about 175. I am struggling as to how I should dress up for my age.. I guess you would say I am pear-shaped as I have a tummy and kind of round in the middle.

    1. You can wear any of the oufits I show that fit your style. I don’t think age has anything to do with it so long as you buy what fits your shape and how you want to look. Talbots, Chico’s, and J. Jill will all have great fashion for you.

  3. I’m a big fan of the T by Talbots line. I have the everday straight pants in indigo and black, the ankle version in black, and jogger and wide leg ankle length in indigo. With two of the indigo “third pieces”, and tshirts and a summer-weight blouse, I’m covered for spring, summer and fall in Texas. I really like that lavender Coolmax snap front topper!

    1. You know the line so well. I seriously considered getting those pants in black too but I have so many black pants, I just don’t need more right now.

  4. Hi Jennifer,
I love all the looks you are showing. But I’m always conflicted about wearing stripes. Are there some guidelines as to width of stripe, placement or not at all?
    I’m a size 12, 5’5″, with a bit of a tummy.

    1. Narrower stripes can be more flattering and slimming on shorter women. To be honest, horizontal stripes draw the eye sideways which does have a widening effect. If you like them, wear them.

  5. I loved your comment about “feeling goofy” in one particular length or width of pant. I feel that way when any of my pants are not long enough. I shudder at the shorter pants that are everywhere this season. We called them floods or highwaters when I was in high school a zillion years ago.

    1. They are very popular this spring. I know they can be worn in a flattering way so I’m working on it.

  6. Love T By Talbots that I own! Very cute outfits! Lavender is lovely on you.

  7. I haven’t heard of this line by Talbot’s. I love all the spring colors šŸŒ¼

  8. Thank you for this try on. I haven’t explored this line by Talbots, and I love nice athleisure wear. Like you, I ride the line between petites and regular sizing at just under 5’5. I am going out to try on a few of the pieces, including the jeans, which I think look wonderful on you. I want to love a dropped shoulder, but they just never feel right on me. Have a wonderful day.

I love the T by Talbots line and have many of their pieces in my wardrobe. I find myself gravitating more and more to this line because it is so comfortable. I have the lavender Coolmax snap front cardigan and absolutely love it. The open weave keeps it from being too warm and makes it perfect for spring in Texas. I have the longer version in white and love it, too. I also have the hooded ribbed pullover in the black/white stripe. After seeing the Everyday straight leg ankle pants you are wearing, I want them, too! Iā€™m a big fan of your blogā€”itā€™s the first thing I read every morning.

    1. Have a fabulous day Sandra

  10. Jennifer, what a great try-on session. I love pretty much everything you have on. I was so happy when Talbots added this line. It fits my retired lifestyle so well! I can feel comfy but put together.

    1. Based on the increasing size of the collection, I think a lot of ladies love it.

  11. You look absolutely beautiful in this lavender color! Made me order it immediately. So happy it was still available in Petites. I love your daily inspiration!
