Dressing Room Diary – Color Spot

Happy Monday, ladies. Let’s kick off this week with a reader request. A gal asked me to try on this jacket so she could see how it looked. While there, I took the opportunity to check out what else they had. If you’re new here, welcome.

Dressing room diary is when I go into stores and try on new merchandise so you can see how it looks on a woman over 25. For reference, I’m 5’4″ and weigh around 136 lbs. I have an inverted triangle silhouette with broad shoulders, straight hips with very few curves. I have a long torso and arms so I usually wear one size larger on top than the bottom. Each item listed is highlighted in red and you can shop by clicking those words.

Caveat – the walls in this store are a most unfortunate color and the lighting is dim which distorts the way the garment colors look. To see the accurate colors, please click through to the website. It also makes my hair and complexion look ghastly. Did you ever consider that the decor of a store affects how the garment looks on you? It does.

Anywho, let’s get started.

This denim jacket seems to be flying off the racks because this was the only one left in store so they had to strip it off a mannequin in the window so I could try it on. IRL it’s a beautiful soft white that flatters most complexions. The website says it has  612 hand-picked rhinestones, and 60,000 embroidery stitches to accent the design. It’s stretch denim sized from 4/6  – 20/22. I’m wearing the 8 so it runs true to size. It’s really pretty and a nice upgrade to a standard denim jacket.

The linen henley is a great piece for hot weather. It comes in 4 colors sizes 0/2 – 20/22. I’m wearing the Pink Shell color in size 8. I could have probably gone down to the size 6/8 because it runs generously. The Brigette pants are as great as ever, these have a button detail at the ankle. They come in regular, petite, and tall sizes 0 – 20. I’m wearing a 2 petite which is a bit snug but the correct length for me so they run TTS.

This floral cardigan comes in 4 different prints, sizes 0 – 22. I’m wearing the pink shell color in size 6/8. It’s a thin cotton/nylon blend with no front closure. This is a nice slim cardigan that isn’t too long. The colors look so very different in person…please look at the website for accuracy. These Girlfriend crops have the same flattering fit as all the Girlfriend jeans. These come in 5 colors sizes 0 – 22. These are a very soft, stretchy fabric that is said to not bag out. I’m wearing a 4.

Here’s the same henley and cardigan with the Girlfriend crops in Sandpiper indigo with the cuffs rolled twice. You can also unroll them for a bit more length. They’re sized 0 – 18, I’m wearing a 2 which seems loose so I think they run a bit large.

This mid-length denim jacket has a frayed bottom hem which gives it a modern feel. Being a denim jacket lover, these longer versions are really starting to grow on me. They’re a better option for tunic tops or when you want to wear your tee untucked. This one is a soft cream (white version here) and comes in regular and petite,  sizes 0/2 – 20/22. It’s nice lightweight denim that’s perfect for warmer days. I am wearing an 8/10 petite.

These denim shorts are a pull-on style with no zip, button, or snap to add bulk in front. They have an 11″ inseam and lots of stretch. They’re available in sizes 0 – 22. I’m wearing a 4. They have a faux 5 pocket styling that’s hidden under the tank top.

This is the perfect layer cardigan that comes in 7 colors and seems to be sold out in this ecru. It’s sized 0/2 – 18/22. I’m wearing an 8/10 which fits well. It’s an airy, cotton, and nylon blend that would be great to toss over everything. The Pima cotton tank is a great basic to layer under everything. It comes in 5 colors sizes 0/2 – 22/24. I’m wearing an 8/10 which is too long in the armhole so I would go down to a 4/6.

These Brigette shorts are a pull-on style in gray and ecru stripe. They have a 10″ inseam and plenty of stretch for comfort. I feel like these could be easily dressed up for many occasions.

This tunic is a lightweight polyester that flutters when you walk. It comes in regular and petite sizes 0/2 – 20/22. I am wearing the regular in a 4/6. The petite version is 2 inches shorter which would be a better proportion for me. The blue and aqua colorway is simply gorgeous. I’m wearing it over the Brigette pant in classic navy. They come in regular, petite, and tall sizes 2 – 18. I’m wearing a 4 petite which fits perfectly.

ACCESSORIES THAT CAUGHT MY EYE

You see a giant bruise on the top of my right foot. I spent last weekend on my hands and knees gardening which was not good for the plants’ health or my foot:)

Have a great day and remember to wear what makes you feel confident.

I love all the jackets–especially the first one. The only thing I wouldn’t wear is the tunic as I would prefer another background color other than the white. You looked great in everything!

The butterfly tunic. As a matter of fact that entire outfit is beautiful on you.

I don’t usually like too much art on my clothing, so I am surprised by how much I like the white jacket. The colors do look very different on their website. However, my favorite outfit is the orange/peachy pink one – great summer hues. Sadly, I recently discovered that our local Chico’s has closed. Thanks for showing us some fun colorful items!

I just watched your group video on skin care. I really enjoyed it and I learned a lot especially about the cruelty free products. I’m planning to order some of your choices. Can you please tell me where I could find the video on makeup that your group did earlier?
I learn so much from you about clothing choices and skin care and I want to say thank you!

    You always look so great.
I think the plain Jean jacket is a real wardrobe plus.
The shorts/cutoffs were a perfect length.
I do love your dressing room post❤️

Don’t care for the jacket but like the paisley tunic and the green shorts. Love looking at all the outfits you try on. Thanks

I would pass on the first jacket but I love the butterfly tunic! I’ve not had great success ordering from Chicos (size wise) and shipping/returns add up.
I noticed in your bottom shopping widget there are quite a few statement necklaces. I thought they were out and more delicate pieces were in. 🤔 Have they come back again?

Delicate is certainly trending but many women love a statement necklace. I wear both depending on my mood.

Thank you for your prompt reply. I thought I had missed a trend. Big statement necklaces suit women of size, broad shoulders or big personalities. I am none of these – narrow shoulders, small bust and a classic dresser.

Always enjoy your comments. Especially with Jjill as that is the one store I can get a fit. I am 77 love to stay current am 5’10 and need a tall in pants.
I love the Instagram piece you do on Fridays.
Being in Canada we do not get all products but nice one girl is Canadian. Thanks and keep up the good work!

So fun and colorful. I love the ecru go over everything jacket. I need something like that for AC places. Easy to put in a tote for a quick coverup. I like having lots of jackets. I wear mostly basics in pants ad tops so third layers are the cherry on top.

I enjoy your posts and have gotten very good information through the years. I would love your suggestions or comments for those of us who now have our natural hair color after our time in quarantine away from our stylists. My bob is now white and the colors and prints I’ve loved don’t always look as good as they did with brown highlighted hair. Thank you!

If your hair has gone from brown to white , the tone may have changed from warm to cool. I’d start experimenting with scarves until you discover your new flattering colors. You may now have lower contrast too. It’s so individual.

Some of the outfits are too colourful for my personal taste, although they do look great on you. I love the striped shorts outfit though.

The store lighting definitely affects both my coloring and the clothes colors, this yellow, is unfortunately a bad choice. I’m sure I’ve decided against many garments due to dingy dressing rooms. Just think, during COVID they could have painted and refreshed the rooms .

I agreed! The old manager told me they were planning to, but it hasn’t happened.
