Dressing Room Diary: Fresh Colors & Cozy Fabrics From Talbots

As I mentioned yesterday, I popped into several Talbots’ for a dressing room diary. This lime jacket called my name, and I needed to try it on. It’s a cheery, fresh color that’ll brighten any day. Many of Talbots’ clothes are available in misses, petite, plus, and plus petite.

If youā€™re new here, welcome. A dressing room diary is when I go into a local store for a try-on session so you can see whatā€™s new and how it looks on a woman over 25. For reference, I am 5ā€™4ā€³ and weigh around 140 lbs. I have broad shoulders, straight hips, a long torso, and long arms. I often buy one size larger on top. Youā€™ll see me try on clothes in colors and shapes that may or may not flatter me because I want you to see whatā€™s in the stores and get some styling ideas. I will tell you what sizes I am wearing to help you understand how things run.

QUILTED COLLARLESS JACKET regular XS – BOYFRIEND SHIRT M petite- SLIM ANKLE JEANS 8PSHEEC HIGH-CUT NO-SHOW SOCKS

I’m not the only one who found this jacket cheery because it’s flying off the racks. This is a misses XS that I could barely get my arms through and the last one in my store. It’s a great color for gloomy weather and bright sunshine alike! It’s lightweight and a great piece for layering. It comes in this pistachio shade and a softer moss color. Lime is showing up in lots of places for spring 2023, so Talbots is right on trend. It’s hard for me to say, but it seems to run true to size (TTS). The boyfriend white shirt is a classic, as are the slim-ankle jeans in this deep Lyra wash. I have put on a few holiday pounds šŸ™ so I’ve had to move up to an 8P in the jeans, which fit TTS.

QUILTED BLAZER petite MPLAID SHIRT misses MSLIM ANKLE JEANS 8P

This Terracotta-colored quilted blazer is double-breasted and also comes in rattan or indigo. I love the softly rounded lapels on this cropped jacket. The length is perfect for helping your legs look longer too šŸ™‚ I’m wearing it over a cotton classic plaid shirt (on sale) in shades of pink, ivory, and taupe. There’s a lot of color mixing going on these days in new fun combo’s and anything seems to go.

DENIM SHIRT petite MSHAKER STITCH CARDIGAN petite M

The website shows this cardigan layered under this quilted jacket, but I would have needed to go up a jacket size to do that. The denim shirt is a slightly lighter wash than the slim jeans but you still get a column-of-color effect. BTW- they say double denim will be on trend (again) for spring 2023. Was it ever out of style? The shirt has a classic fit that runs TTS and no extra buttons on the patch pockets.

STRIPED COATAGIN misses SWHITE CHATHAM ANKLE PANTS 8PSOHO LEGGINGS 6P

This striped coatagin has fun nautical vibes. It appears black in my pictures, but it’s a deep indigo. The website describes it as a cabled knit, but I saw no cables…just a chunky knit with wide stripes. The toggle front closer is what cements the nautical look for me šŸ™‚ I tried it over a column of ivory and white and then swapped in some navy pants. The size of these stripes is pretty significant, so I think it could overwhelm shorter gals, even in the petite version.

The Chatham pants are a terrific basic in 8 colors. They have a flattering side zipper which keeps things smooth through the tummy. The Soho leggings are a substantial ponte knit pull-on style that comes in three colors; I’m wearing indigo.

T TALBOTS TEXTURE MOCKNECK PULLOVER petite MT TALBOTS EVERDAY STRAIGHT PANTS petite M

This time of year feels like T by Talbots season to me. Their soft, comfy, updated athleisure styles are perfect for a casual lifestyle. This mockneck pullover has side zippers so you can access your pockets and is in a cozy fabric with plenty of spandex. It is a white and indigo color. These everyday straight pants are a pull-on style with 11% spandex, so they will never lose their shape! I have them in navy and love how comfy they are and still look polished.

T TALBOTS RACER STRIPE PULLOVER petite MT TALBOTS STRAIGHT PANTS petite M – T TALBOTS FRENCH TERRY ZIP HOODIE petite M

The shoulder stripes on this pullover are really fun but in the exact wrong place for my broad shoulders. If you’re wider on the bottom than the top, this will give your figure some nice balance. I topped it with this french terry hoodie, but I probably wouldn’t wear them together because it hides the striping. The hoodie is indigo and white. I think it would be great all spring and summer as a light layer over white jeans, etc.

COTTON TURTLENECK petite M- KNIT WIDE LEG PANTS petite 8

The following day, I hit my other Talbots and zeroed in on these knit wide-leg pants. I love the silhouette and fluid drape of the leg. They also come in indigo. The rise is high and they have double sailor-type buttons up the front, which I neglected to photograph…sorry, rookie mistake.

SMOCKED CUFF STRIPED TEE misses SWIDE LEG JEANS petite 6

These wide-leg white jeans have a trouser vibe with a high rise and slash pockets. The fabric is substantial, so they’re nicely opaque and have plenty of stretch. I paired them with this striped tee which also has an interesting shoulder detail. The sleeves have a slight puff, and the top shoulder section has stripes that go front to back.

STRETCH TERRY TURTLENECK SWEATER petite M WHITE JEANS

Here are the same white jeans as above, this time with a cozy terry turtleneck. It also comes in deep indigo and ivory. This outfit is warm enough to wear this time of year but has a spring vibe because of the colors. I see this with soft metallic booties like this or sneakers like this.

SHAKER CARDIGAN petite MHIGH WAIST STRAIGHT BLACK JEANS petite 8

I’m finishing off this post with a little more lime. This soft cardigan is called pistachio, but it’s lime in my eyes. It also comes in three other colors, including a fabulous blue. The front edges have a twill-type tape that finishes it off. I’m wearing it over a simple cotton tee (that I can’t find the link for) and these high-waist straight-leg jeans. This classic black denim is completely fade-resistant, so they won’t end up gray after you’ve washed them.

Things are still trickling in, and I expect more of the collection will be on the shelves once they clear out more of their reds, plaids, and holiday things…which are marked way down.

Is lime a color you wear?

Thanks for reading, and be sure to wear what makes you feel confident.

  1. I read review of the slim ankle jeans in the Lyra wash, and a couple of reviews noted that they ran smaller than other washes. Just curious, if you tried any other wash slim ankle jeans on? Since, Iā€™m strictly an online shopper, youā€™re Dressing Room Dairies are super helpful.

    1. I’m sorry, I only tried that wash on, but they fit the same as other Talbots jeans I own.

  2. Wellā€¦I do like a lime with an occasional margarita, lol! Maybe in the spring/summer for that color in clothing though. That indigo striped hoodie would be perfect for my summer trip to the beach in California later this year – so thanksā£ļø

  3. I find myself shopping for casual items since retiring, but I still enjoy finding pieces at Talbots.

  4. Thanks for mentioning Sheec socks. The bit of gel on the inside of the heel keeps them secure while the soft fabric and lack of a seam at the toe make them extremely comfortable. The “no show” design looks more stylish than typical socks. My feet say “thank you”!

  5. Blue turtle neck is a pretty color. I havenā€™t worn lime but it is refreshing to look at.

  6. Love all these great colors. Talbot’s has such nice classic clothing. You look great!

  7. Joanne W. says:

I have always loved the classic, well made clothing from Talbots. Thanks for a great post.

    1. I’m glad you liked it

  8. Janice in Ky says:

Lime green is one of my favorite colors. When my hair was still red I would wear something in that color just about every week, clothes, shoes, handbag or jewelry and scarves. Iā€™m a cool winter with white and salt & pepper hair now and it still looks good on me. If I hadnā€™t just purchased the bright blue jacket in the fall it would already be on order. I will be checking out other items in this color. Iā€™m sure there is something else calling my name šŸ„° I also really like the T leisure wear.

  9. I love Lime green, but I looked the pants and paying a $100 for a pair of pants seems like a lot!

    1. The colors are beautiful for the season. The light blue sweater was my favorite

  10. This shade of green is magic for me! Love, love, love!

  11. Those look more like “Melon” colours to me rather than lime….which are very Spring/Summer and fresh šŸ™‚
Now to get through Winter snow, slush, grey skies, etc.

  12. Ditto what everyone who has been a long time Talbotā€™s customer is saying! I relied on their clothing for work and now find their leisure/athletic wear practical and reliable. Sadly, I canā€™t wear those short cute jackets, as I need to cover a disappearing derriĆØre. The petite department of my local store sees me often, and I rarely visit without a purchase. I find in recent years their attempt to stay with current trends (like the puffy sleeves on the T that Jennifer modeled) sometimes works for me, but many times I still go back to the classic, tailored look for which they are known. I rarely purchase anything for full price; their ā€œ40-50% off one itemā€ promotions land in my inbox more often than my bank account likes!

  13. When I worked in the office, I always shopped at Talbots. Not so much now that I work from home. Now I want to go back!
I would like you to add information regarding seasonal color pallet in your post. When you get your seasonal colors right, shopping is a lot easier.

  14. I’m a new convert to Talbots in the past year. Sometimes their things are overly cutesie, while others are just my style so I appreciate you showing us the best of the best. Totally off-topic question, but I’d like to buy a countertop magnifying mirror after discovering how nice it is to have one via a hotel stay. But what level of magnification is best? Amazon has the ‘same’ one in 3x, 5x, and 10x. ĀÆ\_(惄)_/ĀÆ Reviews are all over the place.

    1. I happen to prefer 7X or 8X. I guess it depends on how bad your vision is šŸ™‚

      1. Thanks!

  15. I love lime green and think it looks great on blondes. It certainly looks great on you! I gave up on Talbots several years ago, but about a year and a half, I gave it another try. I’ve found so many things I love. They have really added more casual athleisure wear that looks and fits great. Love the stripped top and that blue turtleneck! Talbots is now my go-to store for classic and casual.

  16. I’m another very long-time Talbot’s shopper (35+ years) who is enjoying the T line now that I’m retired. The lime is certainly cheery, but it’s not compatible with my coloring. I tend to stick to a smaller color palette because it’s cost-effective and maximizes cohesion (and I get too overwhelmed by too many choices!!). I love the indigo and coral sweaters and jackets but will likely purchase the indigo and add color with scarves. Love this post!

    1. Scarves are a great way to add color!

  17. I can always depend on Talbotā€™s for their classic lines and quality clothing! Loving that lime jacket for spring – such a great pop of colour šŸ˜Š

  18. Thanks for doing the shopping!

Long time Talbots shopper that relied on their classics for work. Now retired and I love the athletic wear and leisure pants. Will consider the wide leg pants.

  19. I really like the terra-cotta jacket the best. I will have to see how the lime green looks on me now that I have silver white hair. I am a warm/neutral skin tone. Some of my clothes just don’t work any longer. I think I can pull off brighter and cheery colors more than I used to.

I love Talbot’s, sizing is right on. Chico’s sizing has never been right for me. I seem to be in between those sizes there.

    1. Silver/white is bright so you may find bright colors do work now.

  20. Love lime green!
I have not shopped Talbots, guess I better hop to it.

Oh can I relate to a few extra pounds! I have cleaned the pantry of everything sugar and ready to get serious.

Thanks for your post, always the first thing I read in the morning.

    1. Itā€™s funny how fast those holiday pounds sneak on šŸ˜

  21. Carol Morley says:

Another loyal Talbots shopper here! Thank you for this dressing room adventure. While lime is too bright for me, I will visit the local store for some of the other featured pieces that may go with me next week on a quick trip south.

  22. Good morning, Jennifer. I love the look of lime in clothing, and it looks great on you.. It gives such a feeling of spring. Unfortunately, it does not look good on me. So, I am left to enjoying it on others.

  23. I especially like the lime green jacket and would wear it a lot. Double denim is always in style for me. šŸ˜€šŸ‡ØšŸ‡¦

  24. I see the quilted collarless jackets everywhere. The spring moss may be a color more in my wheelhouse. It has an interesting pattern with horizontal stitching on the top and diamonds on the bottom. Iā€™m full force in remaking my closet. ā€œLess quantity, better quality ā€œ keeps ringing in my ears as this project proceeds. I need a more planned agenda when I do shop.

    1. Iā€™m still going through mine too and totally agree. Quality over quantity for me.

  25. Havenā€™t shopped Talbots since I retired. Your post will send me back!

    1. They have fabulous casual clothes.

  26. Pat Patterson says:

Fantastic outfits today ! I also am a long time Talbots shopper, (35 years)
The lime green is such a cheerful color that I should add it to my collection of navy and black pants.
    Have a great day

    1. I never ever wear that color but Iā€™m soooo tempted by that jacket! Iā€™ve tried it on twice now and love the fresh burst of color.

  27. I’ve been a Talbot’s gal for 46 years. Classic, classic, classic. It saw me through my work life and now my retired life. It’s wonderful to walk into a store where a size is a real size made for real women. A size 10 is a size 10, and over time you just know what to gravitate to automatically. Yes, Talbot’s is pricier than a lot of retailers, but the clothes are well made, high quality materials, and they last.

    1. I also love that they carry petite, plus, and plus petite.
