Dressing Room Diary in Red, White, & Blue

It’s never too early for red, white, and blue outfits with a spring vibe, so that’s what I’ve got for you today.

If youā€™re new here, welcome.Ā A dressing room diaryĀ is when I go into a local store for a try-on session to see whatā€™s new and show you how it looks on a woman over 25. For reference, I am 5ā€™4ā€³ and weigh around 139 lbs. I have broad shoulders with straight hips, a long torso, and long arms. I often buy one size larger on top. Youā€™ll see me try on clothes in colors and shapes that may or may not flatter me because I want you to see whatā€™s in the stores and get some styling ideas. I will tell you what sizes I am wearing to help you understand how things run.

NIC & ZOE JACKET size petite M

I have this little fringe jacket in the pale gray (Sugar Cookie) color and love it. This is navy, which I think I love even more. They come out with this jacket in new colors all the time, and for a good reason. It’s a lightweight cotton blend that goes with so many things. Plus size here in other colors.

HALOGEN CROSS FRONT BLOUSE size S / NYDJ MARILYN STRAIGHT LEG size 6 regular HALEY WASH

These NYDJ have a straight leg and come in 4 washes. I have the bottom folded under about 2″ because I am better with the petites. They come in sizes 00-18, petite 00-18P, and tall 0-18. Plus size here and here in various washes. I always suggest you size down in NYDJ because they stretch out with wear. The blouse has a cross-over front and blouson bottom that’s meant to be worn out over pants or jeans. It comes in sizes 00-20W and plus sizes here.

HALOGEN POLO SWEATER size S / HIGH WAIST STRAIGHT LEG PANTS size 6

This polo-collared sweater comes in 4 colors, XXS-XXL. It’s a textured rib that lays flat and hides lumps and bumps. I like that the V-neck is a modest depth. I paired it with this flat-front, straight-leg pants with my favorite tummy-slimming side zip. I am wearing navy, and they also come in black, plus size here. This is a great machine washable pant with spandex that would travel well and dress up or down.

ABSTRACT PRINT BLOUSE size M PLUS HERE / ITTY BITTY BOOTCUT JEANS size 4PLUS SIZE HERE

This abstract print blouse has a 3 button cuff in a medium-weight crepe with a nice drape. It comes in sizes 00- 20W and plus size here. It’s described as gray, but I see a soft cool toned blue with soft white. I think it would be really pretty with white jeans or pants for spring. These are the Wit & Wisdom Itty Bitty bootcut jeans which fit beautifully. They come in sizes 00-18 with a 32″ inseam, so I need shoes or boots with these. I love how this jean fits and shapes then flares slightly to go over footwear. Plus size here.

KNIT POLO size S / STRAIGHT LEG WHITE JEANS size 6

Another great polo knit sweater that comes in 4 colors sizes XXS-XXL. I’m wearing it over these NYDJ white Marilyn straight jeans. They come in sizes 00-18 Petite and Plus size here. My store didn’t have petite so I’m showing the regular length and have turned the bottom under 2″. As with all NYDJ, I recommend sizing down because they stretch out when you wear them.

CROPPED DENIM JACKET petite M / CASLON STRIPED TEE size M / COTTON CHINOS IN NAVY size 6

This little cropped denim jacket would look really cute over a casual dress. The bottom is gently frayed, which makes it a bit more pliable and soft than other jean jackets. I’m wearing it over a red and white striped tee with blue pants for a spring vibe. The tee comes in several solids, a few prints, and this fresh red and white stripe. It comes in sizes 00-18. The chinos are a nice classic shape in 4 colors with 3% spandex. These have a nice relaxed fit with a straight leg.

STRIPED BOATNECK SWEATER size S / CASLON COTTON CHINOS size 6

This striped sweater has a fun nautical vibe in 3 colors. The boat neck is not my most flattering shape but wonderful for women who need to add width to the top of their silhouettes. I paired it with the same Caslon Stretch cotton chinos as above, this time in classic white. This whole look feels so spring-like.

DRAPE COLLAR KNIT BLAZER size MPLUS SIZE HERE / STRIPED SWEATER / ITTY B ITTY BOOTCUT JEANSPLUS SIZE HERE

This knit Halogen blazer is made from a comfy cotton knit with a drapey wing collar. It has elevated sweatshirt vibes and is super comfy. The nipped-in waist and side pockets gives me the illusion of a waist where I have none šŸ™‚ It comes in 3 colors this season, including navy with white stripes. I think I could go down to a size small, so I have it on order because I think it will be great for my trip to Florida next month. It comes in sizes XXS-XXL and plus size here in navy.

Navy and white is a favorite spring combination. Adding a dash of red seems so natural I may have to add some to my wardrobe šŸ™‚ Are you ready to see some spring fashion?

Thanks for reading and be sure to wear what makes you feel confident.

  1. Jennifer I took your advice and tried buying LandsEnd.com Starfish Slim leg pants in regular length and they fit perfectly! They have a new knit denim jeans that I will try and let you know how they fit. They must be comfortable as well as looking good. Fingers crossed.

  2. ā¤ļøā€™d these looks the best – hubby not so much, as I want ALL these outfits for spring, haha! Red, white and denim blue always makes me feel like a proud American too! Thanksā€¦šŸ‡ŗšŸ‡ø

  3. Hey Jennifer! I love the look of the fringe jacket. Itā€™s feminine and not fussy and can picture myself with the navy fringe, dark wash jeans and white blouse. Iā€™m also a fan of the white denim jacket with the navy chino pants. Bring on the boat necks with the stripes! Itā€™s the look I hate retiring for the winter and the white with red stripes is on my short list! Iā€™ve also had those moments at a mall when I want to get in and out before dark. Be safe and love your dressing room diaries.

    1. I adore that fringe jacket!

  4. Its great to how items look on a real person. I got excited about the polo sweaters as I love the style & they are offered in colors I can wear (I’m an autumn so all the blues are off limits). Then I noticed the dropped shoulder. Not as deeply dropped as a some but off limits for my narrow shoulders & largish bust. The look great on you but are a disaster on me. I’m so frustrated with all the dropped shoulder styles. Before I had my style analysis I bought a few cardigans from J Jill. Every time I put one of these on I felt dumpy. Now I know why and they are headed to the charity shop. Thanks of letting me vent.

    1. Dropped shoulders are cheaper to produce so brands are all over that. Theyā€™re not flattering on most women

      1. Hi Jennifer, Such inspiring choices for spring, thank you for sharing this post today after a challenging week. The Nic & Zoe fringe jacket looks fabulous in blue. I actually bought it last spring in the soft gray which you shared with us at that time. I wore it a lot last year and itā€™s still among my favorites in the closet. Thank you very much sharing the latest color option.

      2. Iā€™m so tempted by the navy too!

      3. I am fortunate that I have broad shoulders and am largish busted so the drop shoulder works for me. I love that navy nic and Zoe fringe jacket! Everything today looks wonderful on you Jennifer! I am only 3 pounds heavier than you and two inches shorter and I canā€™t even get a 12 closed around my waist in jeans! Why oh why do we lose our middle section as we age?! Sorry for the vent. I canā€™t find jeans that will fit my waist without swimming on my hips and thighs. I am 78 and disabled so I canā€™t walk very far without pain so exercise is out of my playbook now. I still wear leggings with tunic style tops and thin elastic top pants in knit. Iā€™m so sorry that you had a shooting incident in your mall! It is getting to be a very scary world.

      4. I suggest you try pull on jeans to fit your waist and have the hips taken in. It’s the best way to get a good comfy fit.

  5. I love that striped sweater! I had to order it- it will be perfect for spring into summer here in the Va mountains.

I pretty much love everything Nordstrom has to offer in different price ranges. I love the collard sweaters and the fringe jacket! The sweatshirt jacket is cute, it’s very casual would look super cute on college gals! Thanks for these posts!

  7. Cotton polo sweaters are so practical as we inch closer to spring. Everything today is wearable, easy to style and would give good mileage for money.

  8. So many cute and wearable ideas in this post! I love Nic and Zoe. The navy fringe jacket calls my name.

  9. As usual, I wish that Nordstrom actually liked Petite people. These outfits are Spring (to New England Summer) and are bright and cheerful. I much prefer them to the explosion of color that other retailers are showing now — although I like the fresh greens and blues (other than navy) that I’m seeing. Spring is still a dream here in southern Maine as we have 8-plus inches of snow on the ground and more to come.

    1. Oh boy. I do remember those east coast winters.

  10. I love the little fringed jacket! Itā€™s one you could wear with jeans or dress pants.
Iā€™m looking for itty bitty bootcut jeans in a dark wash so the hunt continues. At the moment I have only straight leg jeans which Iā€™m loving. They flatter my shape much better than skinnies. I tried on the wider leg jeans but thought they made me look bigger and who wants that?

  11. What a great touch of Spring. Makes me feel like it is right around the corner.
Love the white and red striped sweater and the blue fringe and white jacket.
Glad for a little Spring Fever.

  12. I love these looks! We get such a short wear time with jackets & sweaters in AZ but Iā€™m doing my best to put them to use the minute it hits 60.

  13. Melinda Beckett says:

Love all the looks in red, white & blue. I especially like the timeless blue jacket with the fringe!

    1. Me too!! I’m trying to justify owning another color šŸ™‚

  14. Susan Nothwehr says:

Thanks for your blog. I just signed up, because I read about you in Taniaā€™s post.
I loved your look in the red striped sweaterā€” then was surprised that you didnā€™t think it was the neckline for you. You look awesome in that sweater!!

    1. Welcome. You’re sweet, thanks. I have very broad shoulders, and boatnecks accentuate them, which makes my bottom half look narrower and out of balance.

  15. Love all the red and white! Really liked the boatneck sweater on you. Bring on Spring šŸŒ¼

  16. Charlene J. says:

Love the pretty concept of using my print blouses with white. jeans.
Bought a pair of boot cut NYDJ jeans last year. They look and feel great.

    1. Bootcut are my very favorite.

  19. Great choices for end of winter/early spring! Always find the stripes so fresh and spring like and I’ve been searching out Johnny collar tops this winter too. These are great options going toward spring. Also, I have a white denim jacket that gets a lot of wear in spring and on cool summer evenings at the beach. Have a great weekend!

Have a good weekend. I signed up to read your blog a couple months ago and I wasn’t really sure if I would read it on a consistent basis. Well, it’s the first email I look for every morning. I’ve learned alot from your blog, added collagen to my diet and totally identify with your hair and eye troubles.
    Thanks, Jennifer. šŸ˜Š
