Dressing Room Diary- Mostly Dresses

Happy Friday ladies. I will be the first to admit that our current weather influenced what I tried on yesterday. We’re in the middle of a nasty heatwave and nothing feels cool enough to wear so I focused on casual dresses that looked easy.

Welcome to dressing room diaries. If you’re new here, welcome. DRD is when I go into stores and try on new merchandise so you can see how it looks on a woman over 25. For reference, I am 5’4″ tall and weigh around 136 pounds. I have an inverted triangle body shape with broad shoulders, straight hips, and very few curves. I have long arms and torso so usually wear one size larger on top than the bottom.

I realized at the end, that I was holding my phone right side up. I always hold it upside down so I can get a more accurate picture of the length. Today’s photo’s all make me look like I have no legs, so the proportions are off. I blame it on the heat.

I was asked to share what I wear into the stores for these so here you go-

WEARING – CHAMBRAY DRESS almost sold out, similar here,   here   and here

My hair got particularly trashed during this try-on session which tells me it’s time for a trim.

I started with this white denim shift dress which has slight cut-away sleeves and side pockets. It’s nice heavyweight denim so totally opaque and you don’t need a slip under it. It’s sized 00-24. I’m wearing an 8 which felt too large because the armholes were quite deep. I wish it came in petite, which might fix the armhole depth but then I might feel it was too short on me.

This striped shirt is in a beautiful, lightweight cotton that would feel fabulous in hot weather. It’s sized 00-24. I’m wearing an 8 which feels very roomy so because it has a relaxed fit, I suggest you size down if you want a slimmer look.

This pull-on linen skirt has a wide elastic waistband that I would want to cover. It’s available in 3 colors, sizes classic (regular), petite, and tall, XXS-3X. I’m wearing a classic XS. It’s meant to hit just below the knee so I would do better in the petite. It has a back vent for ease of movement and is fully lined.

The shirt is a very lightweight, organic cotton voile. The relaxed sizing makes it quite oversized so this  8 is very large on me. Stock is low in this shirt but I loved how it picked up the color of the skirt.

This Baird McNutt Irish linen shirtdress is oversized by design and so comfy! It comes in 5 colors, classic, petite, and tall in XXXS-3X. I am wearing a classic length in size small. I think this runs large so if you want a more streamlined fit, I suggest you size down.

I love, love this shirtdress. It comes in the black and white stripe, or this navy and white in classic length, petite, and tall sizes 00-24. I am wearing the classic in 10 which is one size too large and I would be better in the petite. The fabric is totally opaque so no need for a slip with this color. It has on-seam side pockets which are always a hit with me because I have things to carry:) It has a slight shirttail hem and a self belt which I would probably switch out for a woven leather like this.

I broke down and tried on some white jeans because summer…white jeans… how could I not? I’m wearing them with this best-selling slim-fit Baird McNutt Irish linen shirt. It comes in classic, petite, and tall sizes 00-24. It’s a fabulous weight that’s perfect for warm weather. I am wearing a classic length in 8 and like this oversized look. The relaxed fit version is here, in 6 other colors. This color appears to be sold out online, but they had a large stack at my store, go figure. I blame that on the heat too:)

The white jeans are their classic 9″ vintage straight. It’s called 9″ because, you guessed it, the front rise is 9″. This is probably high-waisted on many but not with my long torso. It comes in classic, petite, and tall sizes 23-37. I am wearing a classic 28 which is a touch long so would probably choose the petite for me.

The Over 50 Style Team will be chatting LIVE at 11 am PT/2 pm ET on Instagram. I’m planning to host on my feed so this should be interesting. I love learning new things:) The topic this week is makeup! I hope you can join us.

Have a great one ladies and remember to wear what makes you feel confident.

I dont wear dresses, shorts, or skirts any more and have not for about 10 years or so.
I love my ankle length slacks and capri’s as they cover my veiny legs and knees so well. I like long caftans for that reason at the pool or for resort wear.
The dresses look so fresh and cool for those that can wear them well and love them.
Everything is so casual now, especially for older folks; you can look smashing in slacks even at cultural events, funerals, etc. if you get the right fabrics and accessories.
One thing to note, as we age, our legs and thighs tend to change and can look “old” meaning either sinewy-gangly
looking or flabby with lost muscle tone; they lose that lush, full shape of youth (hormones!); if that happens its time to cover it up. If not, go for the shorter styles and enjoy it while you can!
That white shift is just beautiful on you.

The skin on my body has gotten very loose since I loss those few pounds earlier in the year. I’m using some hand weights etc but there’s a limit to how much I can improve it.

I love the shift dress which looks great on you, and I know it is very cool, a particular asset in summer-time Phoenix!

Love to wear dresses/skirts in the summer! Hem lines make all the difference!

I love the skirt outfit on you! But then, that’s my uniform. But I like corduroy, denim or heavy cotton skirt (NO see thru problem ever) with a linen button down. I also like the oversize of the shirt on you.

Thank you for the heads up on the denim shirt dress from Chico’s. I clicked on over and bought one immediately (hopefully it is an affiliate link for you).

Love the bangle on the denim dress from Old Navy. Any info on it?

I bought it at a tiny boutique over 25 years ago and can no longer find a similar one to link too. Sorry

Love these looks on you but especially the white jeans and linen shirt. You’re looking happy to be in these lightweight summer clothes. They seem to suit your style and coloring beautifully!

I have tried to buy many dresses this season, and not a one worked for me. I even tried that navy and striped dress from JCrew – loved it, but it did nothing for my body. You look great in that particular dress! Enjoy.

I have a love/hate relationship with linen. When it looks good, it’s beautiful but it can just make you look rumpled sometimes too. So, I just buy tanks in 100% linen and get linen blends for shirts and pants. II like all these dresses but I don’t wear them but they are pretty to look at.

    I like the looks today.
I especially like the denim shift with the shirt tied on top.
I am not on Instagram but would love to see your live chats with the other ladies I follow. Would it be possible to link them on here after they are done?

Agreed…I am not on IG either. However, the link Jennifer put in her Sunday email took me to the live chat replay without having to login to Instagram. I just wish it was posted on Friday after the chat finishes

I loved all the shirts today and the white jeans. I hardly ever wear dresses, except maybe a tee shirt dress but they look nice on you and I think your hair looks great!

Love the striped dress on you!! I bought the chambray shirtdress which is a similar style and I wear it all the time. The pockets are perfect. Happy weekend:)

    Hi Jennifer,
I love your blog & have gotten so many tips & good ideas.
Have you have done an article on “what to wear to a summer wedding”?

Not in a long time. What sort of wedding and location? I can give you some ideas.

I love linen looks on others, but I feel so disheveled and not put together when I am wearing it. Actually, I am really loving your hair a bit longer and tousled. It’s a bit more today kind of youthful styling and looks good on you, in my opinion. But of course, I don’t mean that in any negative way, just a style change option.

Thanks so much. Some days it works, others it doesn’t. My hair is so thin there is a fine line for the length I can wear it.

    June 4, 2021 / 5:38 am

I have a linen skirt problem. I bought an expensive linen skirt that appeared opaque in the stor. Wearing it, I discovered it was too transparent. How do you check for this when purchasing? I bought a half slip – which simply rides up to my waist and doesn’t solve the problem! I had thought a fancy brand and high price tag were “guards”, but apparently not.

I detest manufacturers lining natural fabric garments with polyester.

That is so frustrating. I hold skirts and dresses up to the light and see if I can see shadows through it. If the color is light, I usually assume you can see through it so I mention when I find ones you can’t. Lining is a real problem and most brands cheap out. I’m a fan of cotton slips like these or this one which I bought last year.

You can have it altered to add a cotton muslin lining. The seamstress can tack it at the seams so it does not ride up. I had that done once and it worked great.

The linen skirt is cute but the link doesn’t work. It links to a shirt not a skirt. The chambray dress links to an Old Navy dress which looks way shorter than what you are styling? Must be the heat?

I fixed the skirt link, thanks. Nope, I am wearing that Old Navy dress. I bought mine last year. I’m just short
