Dressing Room Diary – Try On Session At Jill

This try-on session has been a few weeks in the making because this new collection wasn’t all updated onto the J. Jill website after my first trip in, plus I went back for round two as things continued to come in. This is one of J.Jill’s nicest collections in several seasons so I’m excited.

WOMAN WEARING NEWEST BLUE TUNIC IN J.JILL DRESSING ROOM

If you’re new here, welcome. A dressing room diary is when I go into a store and try on new merchandise so you can see how it looks on a woman over 25, and get some styling ideas. For reference, I’m 5’4″, and weigh around 135+ pounds. I have a triangle-shaped silhouette with wide shoulders, straight hips with very few curves. I have a long torso and arms so usually wear one size larger on top than the bottom.

Most of J. Jill’s items are available in misses, petite, women’s, and tall. Currently, all pants and jeans are 30% off.

As always, you can click the red highlighted text for more details and to shop the item.

WEARING – FAUX SUEDE JACKETRELAXED TUNIC in IVORY – SLIM LEG INDIGO KNIT JEANS

This faux suede jacket is incredibly soft and the color is luscious. Faux suede is always soft, but this is softer than most. It’s styled like a denim jacket which looks great with so many things. I think it runs a bit large, which of course, leaves room to layer it over things. I’m wearing a misses small because I need the extra length for my arms.

This tunic shirt still hasn’t made it to the website in this ivory! I hate when this happens but if I keep waiting to post this, everything else will sell out. They have it in pink and a gorgeous blue online, but my store had this ivory. It runs true to size and is super comfy. I’m wearing a misses in small. The pull-on jeans are very dark indigo knit and feel as comfy as pajamas 🙂 Knit denim is really a dream to wear and fabulous to travel in

WEARING – FAUX SUEDE JACKETPAISLEY MIDI SKIRT

This midi skirt is flying off the racks and is gorgeous with this jacket. It’s not available in petite so I rolled the waistband over twice. It runs true to size so this medium…the smallest my store had, is too large for me. This would look fabulous with some knee boots or ballet flats and deep chocolate or rust-colored tights in the cooler weather. The tank top is mine.

WOMAN WEARING CABLE SWEATER OVER LONG BLOUSE AND IVORY COLORED JEANS AT J JILL
WEARING – OPEN FRONT CABLED CARDIGANRELAXED TUNIC in IVORYSTRAIGHT SLIM JEANS in Light Barley

This cabled cardi is perfect for tossing on over many things this fall. I’m wearing the canvas color and it also comes in butterscotch. This is a S in petite so it runs TTS. The jeans are J. Jill’s classic slim-fit jeans that come in 7 colors. I love this light barley for a change of pace in the fall. They run true to size. I’m wearing a misses in 6 because I like the extra length in the rise.

WOMAN WEARING FAUX SUEDE JACKET OVER STRIPED TEE AND JEANS
WEARING – FAUX SUEDE JACKETSHORT SLEEVE STRIPED TEEHIGH-RISE STRAIGHT DARK JEANS

By now, you can tell I am smitten with this jacket:) I’m wearing it with a simple striped tee and their high-rise straight-leg jeans in their laguna wash. These have Tencel and lyocell, cotton, and spandex and are incredibly comfy. I’m wearing a 6 regular because I prefer the highest rise and I will hem them after a run through the washer and dryer for any possible shrinkage.

WOMAN WEARING RUST COLORED CARIGAN OVER NAVY SWEATER AND PONTE LEGGINGS FROM NEW J JILL COLLECTION
WEARING – RIBBED TWO POCKET CARDIGANSILK BLEND V NECK SWEATER IN NAVYSMOOTHING PONTE LEGGINGS

This cardigan is perfect for a warm fall, day and you can layer on scarves, etc as it cools off. It comes in this gorgeous nutmeg color or a dusty rose. I’m wearing it over a yummy silk blend v neck that came home with me. It comes in 6 colors, this one is navy. The cotton/silk combo is a great year-round weight. These are the smoothing ponte leggings in nutmeg multicolor gingham.

Here’s a closeup so you can see they’re a navy and nutmeg color combination. These heavy-weight leggings are incrediblyy flattering.

long tunic top with slim pants belted and unbelted
WEARING – TWO WAY TUNIC SHIRT O RING BELTPULL-ON SLIM CORDUROY PANTS

This two-way tunic is super soft, Tencel and looks great worn open as a third layer or closed over skinny pants or leggings. Since it’s not available in petite, I added a belt to break up the length and give it some shape. Long tunics are often overwhelming for short women and can make us look larger than we are. A lower-slung hip belt would work here also.

These slim-cut pull-on corduroy pants are fabulous! They’re super flattering and have no zipper or snaps to poke out the front which creates a lump that shows through your top. They come in 3 colors and run TTS. I am wearing a small petite.

WEARING – V-NECK TUNIC  in TwilightHIGH-RISE STRAIGHT JEANS

This v-neck tunic comes in 6 solids and 1 paisley print. It’s a Supima cotton knit that feels more substantial than a regular tee. I’m wearing a misses small so it runs TTS.

BLONDE WOMAN WEAING LONG GREEN CARDIGAN OVER TEE AND STRAIGHT PANTS
WEARING – LONG LINEN-BLEND CARDIGANSUPIMA SHORT SLEEVE TEEBI-STRETCH SLIM PANTS in Woodbine

This long linen cardigan is described as having elbow-length sleeves, but they’re considerably shorter on me and I am not wearing a petite. It’s a pretty, soft sage green that looks nothing like the drab color they show on the website.  It runs TTS. I’m wearing it with these slim-fitting bi-stretch pants in the Woodbine color. The white you see on the tummy of the pants is a smudge on the dressing room mirror:) The pants are a pull-on style with an elasticized waist.

The tee is simple and plain but tends to look boxy on me so I twisted the hem and tucked it onto the waistband. I did a little video on Instagram here to show you how.

plaid shirt belted and unbelted
WEARING – BRUSHED TWILL PLAID SHIRTO RING BELTPULL-ON SLIM CORDUROY PANTS

Same pull-on cords as above, this time in dark camel. I topped it with a twill plaid shirt which I’m showing belted and hanging straight. The shirt comes in 2 plaids and one solid. It’s not as long as the two-way tunic above, so this one looks fine tucked in, half-tucked, or hanging straight.

Have you seen the latest collection from J. Jill?

Thanks for reading ladies and remember to wear what makes you feel confident.

  1. Please share information on the glasses that you are wearing – brand, style name and color. I just had a vision exam and find I will be wearing glasses. Please HELP.

  2. I have not shopped J Jill before I read your post. I purchased the petite slim jeans in Barley and they arrived yesterday. I am very pleased with them. They fit well and are very soft. Love the try on sessions, they are giving me lots of ideas!!

    1. I’m so glad you tried them. I love the fit and color.

  3. So confused about this collection. The “youngsters” are all wearing high-waisted pants and shorter tops when looking fashionable. This collection seems like a perfect way to seem dated/out of step due to the long-and-lean/tunic over leggings options. Seems like these would not be good buys to seem current. OTOH, if the tunic is part of one’s “signature look” then okay. Thoughts??

    1. Yes, and yes. Long over lean is very popular with midlife women because it’s comfy and stylish. We can look fashionable wearing any look we want with the right accessories.

  4. Those camels, blues, and ivories look great on you! Nice collection and you’ve styled them beautifully.

JJill fan here too, but I’ve gotten away from them. Their line has seemed focused on larger-sizes.

  5. This is such a lovely collection. You put together so many cute looks! I ordered the pull-on corduroys. They must be popular…they’re back ordered for weeks. Fingers crossed they show up. 🙂

  6. Love the colors in this new J Jill collection. Have a couple of items on the way (or rather my daughter does, for my upcoming birthday 😉). Great looks today!
I wish more retailers would offer an ivory version of the “classic” white button down shirt. So many of us don’t look good in bright white, and tunics aren’t always practical.

    1. I’m with you on the ivory. It’s more flattering on me too but I see so few available

  7. There is so much to love about your “try on” session today! The faux suede jacket with the paisley skirt and then paired with the striped tee. The comfort of style and gorgeous colors are so appealing. Thanks for all these great ideas! I loved this blog!

  8. I love the nutmeg color. Just visited JJill and came home with a gold flowered top I love and can wear right now.

  9. DRD was a successful fashion show, again.
Thank you for your ability to put color and style together.
Love the new colors like nutmeg, dusty pink and sage green. So beautiful for fall.

  10. I love JJill. I came home with 3 tops last visit. My favorite is a gold floral that I can wear right now

  11. A sales associate clued me in that if you don’t see something on the website, such as the ivory blouse, call a store directly. As I recall, they will ship free from a store. They appreciate your business as the store gets the credit for the sale, which helps them keep that location. Love this collection and especially that jacket!

  12. Linda W. Williams says:

Hi Jennifer! I’m Linda from North Carolina.. This is my first time commenting. I’m 5′ in height so I’m glad I found someone closer to my height. The outfits you are styling in your post today are so beautiful. And I also love your fashion chat with Tania, Deborah, Susan and You. You are all so knowledgeable about fashion. I will be 72 years old next month. Do you think I could pull off these looks. The longest thing I do own is a mid-length gray sweater. A lot of my tops fall below my tush. I usually wear a straight leg pant or jeans. I live in my jeans. I don’t dress to young because my bust is a little bigger than most. I don’t want or show anything but I do wear V- neck and scoop necks. I’ve been following fashion bloggers for a long time but most all are taller than me. Any information you give me will be greatly appreciated.

    1. I would avoid the very long tunics and keep with things that are wrist length or shorter. Fingertip length will be overpowering on someone your height. Try to wear a column of color (same color on top and bottom) to make your outfits look most cohesive and avoid making you look shorter.

  13. Thank you for all the styling ideas. So helpful. Love all the inspiration. I do have a request. Could toy possibly give ideas to wearing midi lengths for a shorter person. Love the look, but feel I could easily make myself dowdy looking. Thanks so much. Always look forward to what you show next! Beckie

    1. I usually shorten midi to just under my knee because it’s just a more flattering length for me. Using a column of color or tonal dressing is helpful with midi lengths too.

  14. As always, I appreciate your styling – love the twist tuck and belts. I have shopped J Jill for years. But now that they’ve moved to tunic length, I’ve moved on to other companies. As you said, the long lengths don’t flatter those of us who are small (5′ 2″) and petite and want something fitted. Even on you, I prefer the shorter length (striped tee) to the tunic length.

  15. Thanks for posting! All great pieces and wonderful styling; you’re right, this is a an especially nice fall collection

  16. Nutmeg, dusty pink, what great colors for someone with summer coloring I would think. I love ponte knitn pants. I have them in every color. They are great around the house and more and more Im wearing them outside on days when jeans feel to confining, like when you’ve gained 8 lbs since Jan. I’m working on it.

    1. I agree, their ponte fabric is amazing.

  17. Cathy Cunningham says:

Love everything you showed today. Especially the suede jacket and the slim fit jeans. Thanks for these posts. I live in Canada and would love to be able to shop at this JJ-Jill store. Can you order on line from Canada.

  18. Would love to see how you knotted the t shirt above Jennifer. I always struggle with the front tuck and It looks so cute! I tried to click on the link you gave us but comes up unavailable. Hopefully you can show it on your blog sometime.

    1. There is a video here showing how I did it-https://www.instagram.com/reel/CTsDzqtJSwZ/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link

  19. The jacket looks great on you! tried on a similar jacket at another store. It did not suit me. I really wanted it to work. I would have gotten a lot of use out of it.

  20. Nice looking collection, Jennifer. Belting the tops was an eye-opener. It really elevates the look. Thank you!

    1. I think so too. Ironing or steaming the tops would help a lot too. The belt can be loose too for the same effect.

  21. Could you advise on sizing for the BI-STRETCH SLIM PANTS (those are the Woodbine)? The website says the run small and to size up–inseams for regular are 27″/petite is 25″. Do you recall what you’re wearing in the photo?
    Thanks.

    1. I’m wearing a 4 regular so I did not size up. Luckily I take snaps of the labels I try in or I’d never remember 🙂

  22. Nancy Haley says:

I have trouble layering necklaces. I love yours! Would you please provide the store where they are available? Is it JJill? Thanks

    1. Mine are the same length. A simple strand of pearls and chain with pendant that I’ve owned forever. There really aren’t any rules, just play around with things you own.

  23. Audrey Calcagno says:

Recently had my own shopping spree at J Jill! Bought the Ponte knit pants in Nutmeg – what a color! The Supima cotton v-neck tunic in Navy looks amazing with it – a combo I never would have thought of. Thanks for featuring even more outfits!

    1. I nearly came home with everything from this collection 🙂

  24. You make everything look so nice. I haven’t had much success with this brand. Sometimes I think you have to be on the thinner side and average to tall in height to get the right fit. When I see ads they always feature tall slim women.

  25. I ilke the fall colors especially the Woodbine pants on you. I have to learn how to knot the tee shirt lke you did. It looks so nice. Do you have instructions or a video?

      1. Could you put the video on here or u tube for those of us not on instagram?

      2. I will try but it’s just a few seconds long.

  26. Paulette Levy says:

A really appealing collection! I love the tops/ tunics that you’ve belted and is exactly what I do! I love the twilight Vee neck sweater best of all! The dark column with nutmeg or dusty pink color open cardi is a close second! Very nice!
