Dressing Room Diary Try-On Session

Happy Monday ladies. I was overjoyed to walk into my local Nordstrom and discover some new Nic+Zoe! Over the last year, their selection dwindled to the point that I assumed they wouldn’t continue to carry it in my store. I’m so glad to see they will because it’s one of my favorites. I love their clothes for many reasons, not the least of which is because they’re a “fiercely female” clothing brand led by a mother and daughter.

If you’re new here welcome. Dressing room diary is when I go into a store and try on new merchandise so you can see how it looks on a woman over 25. For reference, I am 5’4″ and weigh 136 lbs. I  have an inverted triangle body shape with broad shoulders and straight narrow hips. I have a long torso and arms so wear one size larger on top than the bottom. I can wear some petite but many have the wrong proportion on me. You can shop through the items highlighted in red.

I’ve shared this fabulous duster with you before in soft white and so many of you loved it…I was delighted to find it in this Kiwi Green and a soft Blue Haze. As much as I love neutrals, I’m all about color these days and the way it can elevate our mood.  I love its gauzy fabric that floats when you move. It’s sized XS-XL, I am wearing a small and I think it runs large.

I thought it would be fun to compare having a matching color top vs a print top underneath. As I look at these pictures I prefer the print top because I have tucked it in which makes my legs look longer. Florals have never been my thing, but a dark floral is certainly more my style than a pale one, so I will never say never. I’m wearing a small in both tops and a 4 in the pants.

What’s in a name? Apparently not much:) I’m finding pedal pushers in many stores this summer and thought this was another pair. In actuality, because I am short, these long Bermuda shorts look like pedal pushers on me and are really capris. They’re almost sold out so I found them here too. These are very similar as well. Whatever you call them, I like them and brought a pair home.

This CeCe top comes in lots of colors but I was drawn to this geometric print. The 3/4 sleeves have a tie so you can snug it up or loosen it to adjust the length for the proportion you want. It’s sized 00-14W, I am wearing a small so it runs true to size.

I really liked these white jeans but my store was out of my size so these look sort of sloppy on me. The rise is not super high and it’s lower than I like on my long torso but perfect for those with an average or short torso. They have a cute rivet at the ankle and side slit for interest. They come in 3 colors, regular and petite. These are 6 regular…I always wear 4 in NYDJ.

This mango-colored print top has a small amount of smocking around the neck and bottom of the sleeves which is dainty, but not overkill. This would be a good way to try a little bit of this trend if you’re not hugely fond of it. I like the V neckline and the bottom tie is how I often tie my regular shirts. It comes in sizes XXS-XXL, I am wearing a small.

The whimsical print on this shirt dress has tiny lawn chairs. It’s a cotton/spandex blend with lots of stretch. It’s sized in regular and petite XXS-16W. I’m wearing a petite medium that fits nicely. It has side seam pockets which are a favorite for many of us and a self-belt which isn’t so favorite. I would swap the belt out for something like this, or this, or I’m guessing this one would be my fav.

These 4-way 3/4 sleeve cardigans have been a favorite of mine for years. They come in zillions of gorgeous colors each year and are the perfect option for light arm coverage in warm weather. To be honest, I prefer mine just hanging open but they have buttons along the side so you can get creative. They’re sized XS-XXL, I am wearing a medium. This color is Blue Haze.

The tank has the same whimsical lawn chair motif as the dress. I tried it on in Nordstrom but can’t locate it on their site. Surprisingly, I did find it here! It’s a nice substantial cotton/spandex blend and has cute buttons down the back. It’s sized XS-XXL, I am wearing a medium.

As you may know, I was able to lose 10 pounds over the course of the last 12 months. My arthritic feet, ankles, and knees are thrilled but it’s left me with a lot of loose skin which is making my lack of muscle tone, more obvious so I’ve given myself a kick in the pants and signed up for the next round of Faster Way To Fat Loss. I don’t want to lose any more weight, but I also don’t want to put any back on and I think my eating habits could use an update.

I’ve read a lot about intermittent fasting and it has some solid science behind it, plus FWTFL has an exercise component that really appeals to me. I’m giving it a shot and will report as I go along. Today’s the last day to sign up for this round so if you’re interested,  join me!

Thanks for reading ladies and remember to wear what makes you feel confident.

Good morning from the midwest, where it is only expected to be in the 80’s today. Love your posts. While many selections don’t fit my body or taste, you give a great representation of what is available today and that is so helpful to someone who hates to shop.

On another note, I had trigger thumb a few years back and my chiropractor suggested certain hand stretches and massage and it worked. Of course, the hand that it happened on is the one that I’ve always got cupped around my computer’s mouse! I do the stretches a couple of times a day now and massage my hands myself, but love when I have an actual professional massage. Not to diagnose, but sometimes folks aren’t aware of alternatives and it can’t hurt to try them. Good luck!

I have not been as good with my stretching as I should. You’ve inspired me to go back to it. Thank you!

I love the bright colors of the print top with the duster; it really makes the outfit pop! I prefer the tucked-in style with the duster; I think it highlights your figure very nicely.

I headed over to Nordstrom’s this afternoon to try on the mango colored blouse and I love it! It felt like I was wearing a ray of sunshine! I ordered it , as they are selling out quickly and they did not have a small left. Thank you for sharing all the ideas! You hit it out of the park today! It’s 103 in Sacramento today, this will be an ‘inside’ blouse for sure!

How I wish the stores would return to steaming the clothes before they put them out on the sales floor.

I managed to drop some unwanted pounds and now find myself needing to have my own little dressing room session! Besides color and style, I focus on fit. I want to sit, stand, bend and stretch without a ton on rearranging. This line of clothing appears to target the active woman.
I love the dress you featured! Classical summer!

Really like the citrus colored blouse except the neckline looks too high for the fresh colors. Seems out of step.
The little cardigan looks a bit too small/short but I’m glad that waterfall design is still in vogue.
Never liked that style of dress. Maybe in a prettier color. Or as you suggest, a different belt to style it up.

Such great outfits Jennifer.. but I love, love, love the mango floral blouse, so feminine and perfect for summer. Your temps in the Pacific Northwest have even reached our newspapers in central Florida, must be unbearable to say the least. Have great week Jennifer

I like all these outfits, but am especially drawn to the dress which looks cool, comfortable, and appropriate for various occasions. And it has pockets! A big bonus.

I love all the outfits, but really like the cardigan! Having lost weight myself, I have the same problems with sagging skin. I try not to be too self conscious about it, but there are times I like a sweater to cover up my arms.

Have you heard of the R3 weight loss program? It is a 6 week program I used to loose a little bit of weight, but mostly I lost inches. It is not a diet, but a reset in your metabolism. It is very easy to follow. I never felt hungry. Being that I didn’t lose a lot of weight, I was shocked at the inches I lost and how much better I felt in my clothes.

Thanks for sharing all your great ideas!!

When you wore the white pants, the kiwi top worked. The black pants are too harsh and serve to cut the body in half visually. Soft colors with soft colors is my motto. Monochrome head-to-toe would be the best.

Being a more casual dresser since I retired, I worked in uniform, I am loving everything in your post today. I am seriously looking at that perfect little wrap/sweater. And you look great. By the way. If you want to see some “loose” skin, I will send you pictures of me after a sedentary year😀

That yellow flowered blouse is drop dead gorgeous on you. I love the blue and white outfit too. I like your hair up. Did you try tying scarves in your hair after the accessories talk with Susan. I did and I just can’t pull it off. She looks great with hers. Back to my Grace Kelly way I guess.

Love all your outfits today! I agree that it’s very difficult to find Bermuda shorts. They are out everywhere I’ve looked too. I love the denim pair.im going to check out Nordstrom!

Love these looks! You’re looking cute and casual and in most of these looks , quite cool. We are in the midst of a weeklong heat wave with high high humidity so mid 90s feel like temperatures in the 100s. Hard to look at long pants! But this too shall pass. (Love the kiwi pieces especially!)

Love the Nic + Zoe, especially with the dark floral top.
Re: the Bermudas… I spend so much time trying to find long Bermuda shorts that are not just made of blue denim. It is such a perfect length, basically the same as a skirt. They hide the thighs, but stopping at the knee cap does not make the leg/calf look so short. I can never understand why these are so difficult to find. When I do find them, they are usually sold out, which should tell the manufacturers there is a big market for them from ladies of a certain age. If you find any more, Jennifer, please let us know!! Thank you 😊

Great choices, Jennifer. I LOVE Nic & Zoe. One of their free standing stores in located about 30 minutes from my home, which can be a blessing for my wardrobe and a curse for my budget. The store manager told me that active women – women on the go, have jobs or tasks with lots of walking and lifting, have busy days and can’t do a lot of fussing- are the brand inspiration. This explains much of the design choices for me.

That makes total sense. I’ve loved the brand for some time but didn’t know the history behind it.
