Dressing Room Diary- What’s New At J. Jill

Happy Friday, ladies. I spotted some new colors in the J.Jill window this week, so went in for a peek to see what’s new at J. JIll.

If youā€™re new here, welcome. A dressing room diary is when I go into a local store for a try-on session so you can see whatā€™s new and how it looks on a woman over 25. For reference, I am 5ā€™4ā€³ and weigh around 134 lbs. I have broad shoulders with straight hips, a long torso, and long arms. I often buy one size larger on top. Youā€™ll see me try on clothes in colors and shapes that may or may not flatter me because I want you to see whatā€™s in the stores and get some styling ideas. I tell you what sizes I am wearing to help you understand how things run.

J.Jill has streamlined its sizing so that every style is now available as regular in sizes XS-4X. Petite and tall are still available in some popular styles, and all sizes are the same price. Hereā€™s my previous J. JIll DRD in early August.

PURE JILL FLORAL RUANA one sizeĀ  / Ā REVERSIBLE TANK mediumĀ  / Ā BOYFRIEND JEANS 4 regularĀ  / Ā LEATHER SLIDE SANDALS

I’m seeing boyfriend jeans everywhere these days. They’re intended to be more relaxed through the leg and hip with a relaxed vibe. These jeans come in four colors. I’m wearing porcini. They are all shown with a rolled-up hem, but the hem is finished, so you can unroll them. Here are the inseams- R medium 27″ inseam (rolled), R 2X 27″ inseam (rolled), P medium 24Ā½” inseam (rolled), T medium 30″ inseam (rolled).

The floral ruana is feather light and sheer. It feels a bit like a poncho. I could even see tying the front ends together to shorten it…but forgot to get a photo of that šŸ™‚ It seems to have every color in the pattern, so it will go over lots of things.

EMBROIDERED CRINKLEd KIMONO one size

Same look with a different topper. This time with a pretty kimono with multicolored embroidery along the front and cuffs. It’s a beautiful smokey blue color that will look fabulous with so many colors. These reversible tanks run small, so I went up to a medium, and it’s still snug. They come in six colors, and I suggest you size up.

PLAID SHIRT regular small Ā  / Ā PURE JILL PIMA TANK regular XSĀ  / Ā BOYFRIENDS JEANS IN ICONIC WASH regular 4

Same boyfriend jeans as above but in a deeper wash that seems less sporty…when you roll the cuffs down. A rolled-up cuff on any jeans makes them more casual. This plaid tunic shirt is a soft indigo color with bleach-spray distressing, which gives it a worn feeling. It is long enough to wear over slim pants or leggings and covers your backside.

The white pima tank has a roomy fit that doesn’t cling to the midriff…always a plus in my book. The scoop neckline is modest, and its hip length makes it very versatile.

EVERYDAY V-NECK PULLOVER regular smallĀ  / Ā PURE JILL 5-POCKET KNIT PULL-ON JEANS petite S

These pull-on jeans are a perennial favorite at J. Jill. They feel as comfy as a pair of sweatpants but with a jean look. They come in two colors, this is the Grotto wash. They have 4% spandex, so should never bag out! I loved this classic v-neck pullover! It’s a very fine gauge cotton blend knit that comes in five colors. I’m wearing navy. It fits true to size and is a great layering piece for when it’s fall, but you can’t wear wool.

PURE JILL FLORAL RUANA one sizeĀ  / Ā PURE JILL PIMA TANK regular XSĀ  /Ā  PURE JILL SLIM LEG CROPS regular XS

These slim-leg pants are intended to be cropped, but I’m wearing the regular ones. They come in three colors with these inseams- Ā R 25″, P 23″, and T 27″. They’re super soft cotton modal blend with 5% spandex. The pull-on style feels a bit like a legging to me, so will likely look best with a long top that covers your backside.

KNIT BARN JACKET regular SĀ  / Ā REVERSIBLE TANK in MĀ  / Ā SLIM ANKLE JEAN HORIZON WASH 50% off regular 4

Barn jackets are super popular for fall. This jacket comes in two warm shades, this one is Light Tigers Eye. The fabric is so soft that it feels like a sweatshirt. It seems like I’ve said that a lot, but that’s what the J. Jill fabrics feel like…comfy. The large buttons contribute to its sporty vibe and my arthritic fingers found them easy to do up šŸ™‚ This color would look great with black or all the deep browns I’m finding in stores.

DIP-DYED SUNSET CARDIGAN petite M Ā  /Ā  REVERSABLE TANK IN HONEY MĀ  /Ā  PURE JILL AFFINITY SLIM LEG PANTS in navy petite S

I had an impossible time locating the link to this cardigan because I didn’t recognize it on the website! You can see how it matches the honey tank top here, but on the website, it’s much cooler. I love this sort of color gradation, which allows you to coordinate with lots of colors. The sleeves are plenty long for me in this petite so I think they run a bit long, which is nice if you’re short with long arms.

PURE JILL A-LINE TUNIC TOP regular XSĀ  /Ā  PURE JILL SLIM KNIT PANTS in blue grey heather XS petite

Here are the same soft, slim pants in a heathered grey shade. These feel like the comfiest sweats, but the shape makes them look more polished. The tunic top is cotton in a light heather gray. It would look great with white pants now and darker ones as we move into fall. I love the gentle A-line, and the shirttail hem adds a softness to the shape.

The more I dive into the different J. Jill collections, the more I see the value in each. Do you have a favorite collection, or do you shop the whole store?

Thanks for reading, and be sure to wear what makes you feel confident.

  1. I love J Jill, mainly because they offer almost every style in petite. And they are truly petite, not just cut shorter.

  2. Most of my wardrobe is from J. Jill. I’ve been buying their clothing for many years now. I absolutely love this company. There have been a few times when some items didn’t fit the way I expected, but I’ve been able to figure out the sizing. I will always shop at J. Jill.

    1. I really like their clothes too!

  3. I like the J Jill Wearever collection, especially for travel.
I tried on that Barn jacket, same color, recently. The XS petite was still too big; I have narrow shoulders and really need a tailored fit in jackets. I so wanted it to work! I love that color for fall!

    1. I’m a big fan of the Wearever collection too. The fabrics are terrific.

  4. Jennifer, I do wear JJill quite a bit as the clothing is just so comfy, yet looks stylish. My only issue with the company is sizingā€”sometimes too small, sometimes too largeā€”which means I have to order the same item in several sizes, then send some back. Oh well.
By the way, I just received from Nordstrom the Kate Spade purse. Ooh la la! I absolutely LOVE it! Thanks.

    1. I’m so happy you love that bag too! It’s perfect in so many ways.

  5. Iā€™m about your same size only with a shorter torso . im a inch or two shorter and bustier . I wear a 0or 00 in chicos pants. I rarely get petites and a 4 or 6 pants in other brands . I notice you wore an xs petite in Jjill knit but a small in some others . I hate baggy pants and or too short as they make me look shorter and dumpy . What size fit you best in jjill ,? I worry xs will be too small but small too big and if . petites too short ? Short persons problem ā˜ŗļøThank you for tryons . So helpful . Love the navy sweater and pants

    1. I wear different sizes based on how each garment fits. I hope itā€™s helpful I share what Iā€™m wearing.

  6. I do like the barn coat šŸ§„ and the color is beautiful. Also notice a lot of plaid being shown this year. Which I love. Thanks for the great ideas for fall. šŸ‘

    1. Yes, lots of plaid šŸ™‚

  7. Jennifer – this has nothing to do with this post, but I’m noticing a lot of jogger style pants. Is this style on the way in or out? Will you be doing a post about how to style these? Thanks!

    1. The jogger trend is still popular but I suspect itā€™s popularity is dying down. Iā€™ll check into it more for you.

  8. I think my favourite look on you; here today is the barn jacket, tank top and the slim ankle jeans that IMHO really don’t look painted on you as they do on the models in their video. As to the other bottoms I know I would have to try them on due their inseam lengths whereas with the kimono and ruana (though pretty) I would opt for a blanket scarf instead due to the (cooler) climate I live in that could be styled/draped in a similar way. i.e.: Using either kilt safety pins, maggie’s magnets or knot it and possibly even belt it. -Brenda-

    1. I love belting large wraps!

      1. @Jennifer: What I do if belting it is, position a part of it under the back and draw the rest through the armholes and cinch it which means less in adjusting its fabric. Hope that makes sense. -Brenda-

      2. It makes perfect sense! Thank you for sharing how you do it, Brenda.

  9. Really like the kimonos and the jeans! I really want a barn jacket now.

  10. I’m with Donna on the collection colors. As a clear winter and a Petite, there’s not much for me. I like the authentic jeans, but the blue color you’re wearing is not offered in Petites online. Thanks for modeling and the info about Petite sizes: it makes it easy to elimate shopping there.

  11. I used to love J Jill. I am quite petite and their xxs fit me perfectly, in fact I still hang on to a few pieces from this time. they stopped carrying this size, probably because there was not much demand. The only thing I purchase from them is the petite authentic fit slim jeans, which seems to fit as well today as when I purchased years ago.

    1. Everything does seem more oversized these days so if youā€™re tiny, itā€™s a challenge.

  12. Much of my wardrobe is J.Jill. I like the Pure Jill line best as many of the pieces have extra detailing and artistic features. One thing I wish their website would do is warn new customers that the clothes run at least one size larger than the label states… in other words, their XS is really a generous S and L is an XL. So many people complain in reviews that they have to pay to send back an item that is larger than they expected… vanity sizing just generates ill-will and loss of customers.

    1. Great point! I wish brands would include measurements of the actual garments.

  13. Donna Dobbins says:

I used to be a big fan of J jill .
But the last couple of seasons I walk in & nothing appeals to me. Not sure if itā€™s me or the clothes. šŸ¤·šŸ¼ā€ā™€ļø

    1. I find each collection varies for me too. For some, I love everything. Others, thereā€™s just one standout piece.
