Dressing Room Diaries- Athleisure

Dressing Room Diaries- Athleisure

Happy Friday ladies. There’s no question that most of our wardrobe needs have become more relaxed and athleisure is more popular than ever. I am not the sweats and tee sort of gal but I do need comfy. I went out looking for comfy and casual athleisure clothes I could wear around home and for quick trips to the grocery store. What I discovered was a terrific new collection at a place I have never shopped.

If you’re new here, dressing room diaries is when I go into stores and try on new merchandise for you to see how it looks on a woman over 25 who wears a size larger than zero. For reference, I am 5’4″ tall and weigh 145 lbs. I have wide shoulders and straight hips with long arms and torso. I often wear one or two sizes larger on the top than the bottom. My hair gets trashed and the lighting is bad but you’ll get the idea of what things look like.

This swing dress is super comfy and hides a multitude of sins. I’m wearing a small but would prefer a medium to have some extra fabric across the chest. It could not be easier to toss this on with sandals and call it a day.

I love this classic little shirt dress! I’m wearing a medium and would go up to a large so I could add a belt so it runs a bit small. It comes in a darker wash too.

FYI, there is a big white smoosh on the mirror so it looks like it’s on the garment…but it’s not. The fabric of these next few pieces is a soft breathable jersey with Go-Dry moisture-wicking technology that keeps you dry & comfortable. It’s called the Breathe ON collection and it’s terrific.

fashion blogger Jennifer Connolly wearing Old navy jumpsuit

Clearly, I love it because several pieces came home with me. This jumpsuit has an elasticized bungee cord type drawstring at the waist that you don’t really need so you could just snip it off. The color I bought is called black but it’s more like a charcoal gray to me. It also comes in pine and light gray. I’m wearing a small so I think it runs generously. It’s an easy way to dress for hanging out at home and feels more put together than sweats:)

This top and pants are from the same high-performance fabric that I’ve decided I could live in! It’s super soft, stretchy, cool in the hot weather, and doubles for workout wear. The top is called cropped, but it sits at my waist. The pants are also cropped and are a great length for hot days. I am wearing a small in both because they run generously. My top is cornflower and the pants are navy.

This chambray dress is super cute. The style accentuates your shoulders so it would be more flattering on a woman with narrower ones than me. I am wearing a medium in regular. It also comes in tall and petite. I think the petite would be too short for me…I might even prefer the tall version:) Never limit your choices to the size section a store has decided you fit into.

Also – Getting the Right Fit for Petites

I really love the fit of these straight jeans. This particular pair has more distressing on the pocket than I care for but this style is made in tons of washes and finishes. This is their skinny straight fit in a 6 which is perfect for me so it runs true to size. I would prefer these but they were out of my size in the store. This swing tank top comes in tons of colors and prints, in regular, tall and petite. I am wearing a regular M and would opt for the tall if I wanted to wear it over leggings.

My trip to Old Navy was fascinating. I found quality basics that were very similar to what I would find at Gap, but at more affordable prices and are great options for women over 50.

That floral tank and straight jeans are so darling on you! Cutest outfit ever. I hope you bought them.
I agree that the cap sleeved chambray is best on narrow shoulders but the hemline and color are nice on you.
I know everyone is in love with small horizontal stripes but I just can’t warm up to them. Maybe it’s because at a little distance they blend together into a dull, non color. I love large multi colored and bold rugby shirt styles stripes. Just don’t see them anymore.
I’m surprised you all are allowed into dressing rooms. Ours are all closed.

I just bought the cap sleeve chambray dress and the jumpsuit in the olive color…my husband’s eyes lit up when he saw me in the jumpsuit! He said I looked as young as I did when he first met me…..not bad considering I will 70 in October!

Old Navy prices are so low I was suspicious, I never shopped there. But my sister in law gave me a lightweight sweater she couldn’t wear and I’m telling you, that sweater is wearing like iron, it’s kinda weird. It’s easy to dress up, doesn’t wrinkle, has accidentally gone into hot water and the dryer, no problem. Always looks nice. Since then I bought 2 T-shirt dresses. These items you have shown us are quite nice.

I have shopped at Old Navy for several years. The clothes you tried on illustrate why. I particularly love the benefits you accrue by using the Old Navy credit card. For example, just this month, they gave their cardholders bonus points, which translated, in my case, to $115 in Old Navy bucks, which spend like cash at not just Old Navy, but also the Gap, Banana Republic and Athleta. Free clothes and free shipping . . . What’s not to love!

I really like that light chambray shirt dress. Roomy enough to be comfy but not too baggy to overwhelm. I read an interesting article about changes to the fashion industry (some Covid-related) that I thought you’d enjoy. The article, Sweatpants Forever, is from the August 6, 2020 New York Times Magazine. If you haven’t seen it, you might want to check it out.

Love your ON picks! I was in my local store yesterday & saw a few of those dresses. Seeing them on you makes me want to give them a try. I find ON to be hit or miss. Sometimes the clothes are not as nice in person as they look online, but other times, they are really good. Did you know you can order online & pick up in store (& some are doing curbside pickup as well)? That’s why I was there yesterday— to pick up an order of jeans for my son. I got a bit distracted by the ladies clothes though! Question on the jeans: how do you like them compared to the Talbots ankle length straight jeans you showed us a few days ago?

    • Jennifer
      August 7, 2020 / 8:26 pm

I think the ON ones have a slightly looser fit than the Talbots.

Thank you for bringing us Old Navy styles! I have three pairs of the straight leg jeans and love them. I ordered them before the pandemic and they are great and do not stretch out after wearing. I would rate them 5 stars and like them as well as my pricier Chico’s denim. I love the dresses on you and the jumpsuit. I put 2 pairs of the wide leg pants in my cart. They will be perfect going into fall which is typically quite warm during the daytime in the Denver area. The blue twist top and the floral tank are winners on you.

I have an old navy about two miles from me and one is also at the large retail outlet mall here on the MS coast. I depend on their shirts because I know me size and they are not see through and thin with tight arms like some today. I love both tops and will check them out but your blog is so popular, my size is usually gone. I heard old navy is closing a lot of stores. Do you know about that?

    • Jennifer
      August 7, 2020 / 4:12 pm

I have not heard about that but I do know many retailers are tightening their bootstraps to survive this lockdown.

Loved all of your choices today! I was actually in Old Navy earlier this week and picked up a couple of things. I especially like their Slim Fit tee shirts. I am 5’4″, 120 lbs with broad shoulders and not much of a bust! The size Small fits me perfectly. I have several in my closet because they are well made, wash beautifully and the price is right, especially right now. The only downside is that there are limited colors. I also like their swing dresses!

You look fab in the jumpsuit! Last summer ( in New Zealand) I bought a couple of midi dresses and actually found them cooler, which surprised me.

I liked everything! I’m always looking for a jumpsuit but am long torsoed, and they always ride up and are not comfortable!! I really liked the blue twist top and flower tank top..

I would say this jumpsuit has quite a long torso because I blouse it over the waistband.

That jumpsuit is super cute on you! You’ve inspired me to take a look at Old Navy online. The jumpsuit would be a very versatile piece to add to my wardrobe, especially in that charcoal gray color.

Good choices today. Love you in the black and blue top outfit. The black jumpsuit I really like on you. However, I would love to own a jumpsuit but It would be impossible for me because I have a bladder problem.

Old Navy is my go to spot (on line) for compression leggings. They have tall sizes and that is a Godsend for me. Getting veins (76) and a nurse practitioner recommended legging as an alternative to support stockings. Outfit of choice, black leggings and a white shirt.

    Hi Jennifer!
I am pleased with your collection today. I am 5’7”, and 160. I have hips that are one size larger than my top. So , when you try things on, it intrigues me. The blue top with cropped pants’ was a WINNER on you. I also, liked you in the sleeveless top and high waist jeans.
I love dresses in summer also. However, the cute striped dress would be too short on me I think. Maybe the tall would work.
Thank you for trying on these old navy clothes. I haven’t been in one of their stores for years! It deserves a visit!

Too funny! I was there this weekend because of an email saying cardholders (Gap, ON, BR) would get 50% off everything. So I purchased some of the very same things you’re wearing here – the jumpsuit and blue sleeveless twist top! They even have their fitting rooms open (the only store I know in the Burlington VT area that does), but the lines are long and it was easier for me to take them home to try, and I went back and forth three times! I love their pixie pants which come in mid-rise and high waisted. I also kept a tee shirt dress in the most luscious shade of deep blue-green. It’s even nicer than my J.Crew tee shirt dresses! On my way out the third time I saw a really fun print in a man’s Hawaiian shirt, and I grabbed a small – $6 – and wore it for the next two days! And a tip – their online store has many items in petites and talls as well, even if their brick and mortar stores don’t.

Old Navy swing dresses have been a part of my wardrobe for a long time. They are comfy, wash well, and are so easy to wear. I do find that their sizes run a bit on the small side so I usually go up a size.

BTW – the cornflower blue top is a great color for you!!

Really, you looked great in all of them. I like the black outfit as it would look good with a sheer blouse as the third piece. I may just have to check out Old Navy. Thank you!

Wow…I haven’t shopped Old Navy since I went there with my daughter. Long ago. But these are super cute…I will definitely check them out. My casual “pandemic” wardrobe could use a bit more style. 🙂

I bought the Old Navy striped swing dress last week. I actually bought 4 dresses there because they were 50 o/o off over the weekend! They are so much cooler than pants. I also had rewards to cash in so I left with 4 dresses for $34.90. Yes, I’m a deal shopper!
I had been avoiding wearing dresses much because of some broken veins in my legs. I decided to get over my 70 year old self and go for it!
I also decided due to Covid root grow out to go for the gray. Actually more white than gray. I’m getting compliments so I think I’ll keep it! It hasn’t been too hard due to my light color to begin with, plus the fact that the sun had bleached it out during my many Covid walks!

Thanks for bringing Old Navy to my attention. I have never shopped there – thought it was a jeans only place. I will drop in at the local outlet some day.

Thank you so much for bringing Old Navy into your Dressing Room Diaries. I’m tall and I’m so grateful for the pants they carry, did you know when you leave something in your cart they will send an email when it goes on sale. They also offer $10.00 of “Super Cash” for every $25.00 eligible purchase. I sound like I should be a spokes person for them lol.
Thank you Jennifer for introducing Old Navy into your Diaries

I rarely shop in store at Old Navy (who am I kidding, I haven’t been to a clothing store since February) but I get their e-mails and have a great collection of the dresses (most bought on sale for $12) that I wear with leggings.

I clicked on the sleeveless top form Old Navy and liked it even more when i found that the top has a scoop neck but the neckline in the back is high.

I admit when I saw the word ‘athleisure’ I almost skipped the article but I’m glad I didn’t. I would call these pieces casual. All super cute! I bought 3 tops at Old Navy at the beginning of the summer, but even the extra small was big on me. We can’t try clothes on in store in Maine, so I didn’t want to bring too much home with me. I’ve had good luck in the past with their jeans, but all they seem to carry now is skinny or super skinny and I prefer straight or boot cut to balance out my hip and thigh area. I will probably go back for another look when more Fall clothes start showing up. Great pictures Jennifer!

      August 7, 2020 / 7:17 am

I almost didn’t try their jeans in because of the name. That “skinny” straight isn’t skinny at all so I think they should relable them.

I love all of these! I would wear everyone of these outfits, except the darker chambray dress and the swing top.
I have shopped at Old Navy in the past but did not see those cute outfits. I am a taller version of your body type and appreciate the choices. You have me some good ideas
