Exploring Sutter Creek

I packed very little for this RV trip because it’s only for a few days and just 2 hours from home. I expected cooler weather here so I brought lots of things that don’t work. I seldom bring dresses when we travel in our trailer but I am very glad I did this time.

With temperatures hovering in the mid-90’s we decided to go explore Sutter Creek.

Situated in the heart of the Sierra Foothills, this town is delightful.

Charming boutiques, restaurants, and wine tasting shops line the main street offering everything a tourist could want.

Many of the shops have outdoor misters for the sidewalks which tell you how hot it was and explains my flatter than usual hair.Jennifer Connolly of A Well Styled Life exploring Sutter Creek

Despite the heat, I ended up wearing black because a dress is cooler than any pants I brought with me. This little dress is a travel staple for me because I can dress it up or down easily. I wore my uber comfy slides because I seem to have pulled a nerve in my Achilles and it doesn’t like anything touching it.

We had a fabulous salad at Hotel Sutter Creek and people watched from a table by the front window. After lunch, we wandered into a wonderful little boutique. I didn’t intend to shop for clothes but it just happened;)Jennifer Connolly of A Well Styled Life clothes shopping in Sutter Creek

They had some wonderful linen pieces by NIC + ZOE  that my local stores didn’t carry. Unfortunately, they were sold out of my size so I am now on the internet hunt for them. I did not bring one piece of linen on this trip which was a mistake!

Do you wear dresses for very casual days?

Thanks for reading ladies and have a great day!

  1. I love packing dresses because they are the easiest to accesorize, easiest to wear…
I love linen, don’t give a hoot about the wrinkles and so easy to find good deals in Europe.
I do pack dresses when we leave with the RV! 🙂

  2. Love a dress in the summer for any occasion. I live in the south dresses are worn everywhere. Nothing more comfortable on a hot humid day.
My legs are not great but love the feel of a dress.

    1. Dresses are so easy to wear too. No coordinating, just one and done!

  3. Just a word about your comfy slides. I bought them in gold and danced the final songs in them at my son’s recent wedding. They looked dressy and felt so good! As for dresses, I have several that will be perfect in hot weather. I just have to switch my habit of always reaching for cropped pants. Slips are a must for me -old school I’m afraid!

    1. They are fabulously comfy, I agree! I need to get them in another color. The best of all worlds is when they sew a lining into a dress but those are few and far between these days.

  4. I never wear dresses. I live in Florida so it is tee shirts and shorts 9 months of the year!

    1. I haven’t worn shorts for many years but I never say never anymore.

  5. I feel your pain! We are presently in Vancouver and I packed all wrong. It was 30ºC (86ºF) at home when I was packing. I knew it wouldn’t be that warm here, but even so, it’s cooler and damper than I expected. My suitcase has far too many warm weather items in it and not enough for cooler days. I’m having to be quite creative in what I do with the few pieces that are suitable.

    1. Layer, layer, layer Elaine. That’s the only thing you can do…or go shopping;)

  6. It’s 56 degrees here so I’m trying to relate but on the few hot days we get every year, a flowly yet non transparent dress with killer jewelry and sandals win. Have fun!

    1. Wow, I hope you get warm weather soon Janet. We will be headed to the coast in a few weeks and I know the temps will be much cooler there. I totally agree with flowy and non-transparent being the best dress to wear.

  7. Temperatures soar to over 100 here often, so dressing for the hot weather is a must. I’m loving all of the long loose/flowing styles I’m seeing lately.

Isn’t Sutter Creek the cutest little town. I arranged our Soroptimist annual retreat to be held at the Hotel Sutter a couple of years ago- darling. There were a few hiccups, but we had a wonderful experience exploring the town and nearby wineries.

    1. Totally darling town. We will come back when another time when the weather is a little cooler.

  8. Loose fitting dresses are my preference in the summer heat. Yours is very cute. Isn’t Sutter Creek a cute little town? Nice getaway for the day. Have fun exploring the foothills. Also consider wine tasting in the many little towns ????

    1. Sutter Creek is beyond adorable. We hope to do some wine tasting tomorrow afternoon.

  9. Shockwave therapy can help Achilles tendon problems. Not fun, though.

  10. I rarely wear dresses but this hit summer has inspired me to finally get some. I am on the hunt for a couple more.

  11. Very cute. Where is the jacket from?

    1. The jacket is from Artful Home but several years old and sadly sold out.

      1. Hah! I was going to ask about the gauzy top, too!
Artful Home looks a bit expensive for my budget, but if the pieces last, then it ends up being a better investment. You look great, even if it was really hot!

  12. I wish dresses were more popular in our area. Being we are land locked it is very rare to see a woman in a dress. Usually it is very young women or for special occasions.

    1. I don’t see too many here either but I’m not going to let that stop me! If you like them you should wear them Theresa! Experiment with what you like. It’s just clothes.

  13. You look super cool in your dress Jennifer. I have not worn a dress in years unfortunately. We have a wedding in the Fall so I must start looking. I do not see too many women wear dresses up here.

    1. I don’t see many women wearing them either but I love how easy they are to just pop on so I’ll be wearing more.

  14. Janette Colvin says:

I love the look of all linen, however, the I can’t get past all the wrinkles!! I hate to iron and I feel like I have to stop and iron what I have on in the middle of the day because of the wrinkles. I really want to get past this because in Texas we seem to have summer 9 months out to the year and it’s so much cooler. I guess I should not sweat the small stuff right???

    1. It does take getting used too. The wrinkles used to drive me crazy too. They still do in photos but I’m learning to let they go.

    1. This is the summer my cotton skirts finally but the dust so I will need to replace them. I love how easy they are to wear too.

  15. Beverly Glotzbach says:

Beautiful even on a day that you should have melted!

  16. I wear dresses 90% of the time all summer long…..a dress for work, then I come home and change into a more casual dress for home time…….much more comfortable during the summer heat, and a dress can be easily dressed more up or down with the change of jewelry and shoes!

    1. You’re so right about a quick change of accessories! They change up a look faster than anything.

  17. Yes, a dress is certainly cooler and I like to wear a nice loose dress when it’s super hot. I wouldn’t be able to wear the little jacket, though. Anything on my arms would make me so much hotter. Is your dress sleeveless?

    1. My dress is sleeveless and the little jacket is very lightweight cotton. Being loose made it bearable.

  18. Yes, I have a little black dress that’s versatile and it’s linen! It gets a lot of wear during the summer, I wear a scarf, a white blouse, chunky necklace (if it’s not too hot), a flowy kimono. I love having options! Hope your foot gets better.

    1. Those sound great Ramona. I’m on the hunt for some kimonos for summer. The looser the better! Thanks, I think I’m going to have to see someone. Finding new doctors is such s pain.

  19. I wear linen and cotton dresses for casual dressing, but also a smarter dress for lunch with the girlfriends. When it is really hot, I am afraid that self respect takes second place to feeling comfortable. My arms may not be as toned as they should be and my legs have seen better days, but life is too short to worry. By the way, you look great in a dress.

    1. Thanks. I’m with you Susan about the arms. Mine are not toned and I will go sleeveless in brutal heat. As you say, life’s too short to be miserable for vanity.

  20. Living in the Midwest it does get hot and humid. A dress that skims the body is just about the most comfortable piece of clothing you can wear. Statement earrings and sandals and you’re set to go. My go to dress has a small sleeve and the fabric is not see through (no slip).

    1. No slip needed is a pretty important feature for hot weather. I’m on the hunt for those myself. I do love his statement earring finish a look easily.
