Heels: In People and on Shoes

Heels: In People and on Shoes

I’m still processing your comments from yesterdays post. I can’t tell you how moved I was by your outpouring of support and many times was brought to tears while reading through them. Thank you! I’ll admit that gal rattled my cage with her nastiness, but what she really accomplished was reminding me how I’d been hurt by nasty comments as a girl.

I now wear confidence as a shield against critiques of my appearance and fervently hope I can help other women to do the same. I never doubted myself but I detested what she was trying to do. Yes, she was being a heel because most mean people are, but her intolerable behavior has no place in our lives. Let’s move on to a happier type of heel…the ones on our shoes… how’s that for a segue?

The newest direction for shoes, (I hate to call it a trend because it’s been popular since the 1950’s) is the kitten heel. They’re back and looking prettier than ever.

I found these shoes online last month and knew I needed them. They now come in leopard which I like almost as much! They’re a big departure from my usual style but something about them spoke to me. I haven’t worn kitten heels in close to 20 years but remember them as being a great alternative to the perennially popular and unwearable by me…stiletto.

The heel is very low so a simple pad in the front easily keeps my foot from sliding forward… which makes them comfy. I’m not running a marathon in these and you won’t find me wearing them to go shopping, but for a lunch with the ladies, dinner out or going to the show, etc these are great.Jennifer connolly of A well Styled life wearing Gianni kitten heel

There’s something about these shoes that make me feel pretty. The sassy bow is removable for a simpler look, but so far I’ve worn it every time.

The kitten heel looks prettiest in a delicately shaped shoe so a pointed toe looks right to me. I have a long foot for my height so love that the low vamp helps to elongate the look of your leg.

Kitten heels are also showing up in little booties which look so retro and modern at the same time.

I don’t have many “dress shoes” because I lead a very casual life but I do like to go to the Ballet, dinner parties, lunches and dinners out so these are going be my new “fancy shoes” for several seasons ahead.

Are you a fan of kitten heels?

BTW- my top from Covered Perfectly is back in stock and selling out fast. Of all their tops, this is my very favorite.

Thanks for reading and have a great day!

Love kitten heels! Now I “need” those shoes in the leopard print! The bow at the back is my favourite part, I wouldn’t take it off because I dress fairly simply and it adds a feminine touch.
And did you notice the 50s vibe at the Emmys? All the beautiful tea-length gowns? I have one with a shawl collar a la Grace Kelly and I love it!
As to yesterday’s post, we’ve got your back, you can call on us any time!!!

    • September 21, 2017 / 8:12 am

As strange as this sounds, I didn’t watch the Emmy’s…our TV got moved when we painted and it’s not set up =(:-O. Thanks Lea..you’re the best!

How funny Jennifer that I was just perusing the internet for kitten heels myself!! At 62 I am way past stilettos ( though to be honest I could never wear them). I absolutely love these shoes and the leopard print gives them even more pizazz!! I love just about everything you choose and how well you wear everything! Poo Poo to the naysayers….you are admired by throngs!!

    • September 21, 2017 / 8:15 am

I always struggled with stilettos but now…not a chance! These are just so fun. Kitten heels are showing up everywhere so there are tons of options…but I do adore these ones:) Thanks for your support Deborah, it means a lot to me.

Jennifer–so many of us were wounded as young girls and I want to salute your bravery in being vulnerable to bring these issues up in your blog. Thank you for calling out what none of us should tolerate from others and making this a safe and wonderful place to share and learn about how all of us can age with grace using fashion as a tool. And YES, love the shoes–so fun and flirty!

    • September 21, 2017 / 8:24 am

Thank you for being here and contributing to our conversation, Marlene. That’s what I love about my blog..the give and take of ideas and supportive women.

I’ve always loved a kitten heel too. Also thankful the chunky heel is back, it’s my go to heel!

    • September 21, 2017 / 8:27 am

I love the chunky heel! It’s so stable and comfy. I have several pairs of sandals and have been looking for some booties with short heels for this winter.

Love the pants. Where did you get them

You are fabulous and well styled.
Are chunky kitten heels an alternative? I have seen those with jeans??

    • September 21, 2017 / 8:43 am

Yes, and those would be so stable. I love that combo Linda!

    September 21, 2017 / 8:17 am

Yes. I live the leopard print too!

    • September 21, 2017 / 8:44 am

Leopard feels like a neutral to me so would wear them with everything…jeans especially.

  13. Laurel
    September 21, 2017 / 8:34 am

    They’re gorgeous! LOVE the bows.

I don’t wear heels often either, but the kittens are something I can manage for a few hours. I have the Stuart Weitzman Poco heels in nude and they’re about as comfy as a heel can be for me.

    • September 21, 2017 / 8:40 am

Nude would be such a great basic…I’ll check those out. Stuart Weitzman fit me very well. Thanks Laurel!

  14. September 21, 2017 / 8:45 am

Jennifer, I’ve never been a fan of kitten heels but the pair you show in today’s post are absolutely beautiful. In fact, the outfit you are showing today is, in my humble opinion, one of the most chic that you have ever shown. I’ll be stealing that look very soon.

    • September 21, 2017 / 8:49 am

Thanks, Dee…steal away. I’m so glad it inspired you.

  15. September 21, 2017 / 9:01 am

I’m so glad that kitten heels are back as they’re the perfect height for me.

I didn’t weigh in yesterday as I read through many of the comments and could only have said what had already been said many times over. I’m so glad you didn’t let that “heel” get you down, but instead used her viciousness as an opportunity to shine a light on the rude society that we’ve become and encourage us not to engage in it.

    • September 21, 2017 / 10:17 am

Perfect for me too:) Thank you Elaine! I always love to hear from you XX

    • September 21, 2017 / 10:18 am

Wow, lucky you! That’s fabulous but I bet you struggle to find pants.

Jennifer you look fabulous – like the total look. You are radiating so much happiness.

I haven’t been able to wear heels since a serious car accident many many years ago. But maybe I shall try after seeing these.

    • September 21, 2017 / 10:19 am

On no Rosemarie. I am so sorry to hear that. Make these your sitting in a restaurant shoes…maybe it’s not even worth that for you. Your health is the most important thing.

They are so fun they put a spring in my step:)

  18. Laura
    September 21, 2017 / 9:33 am

Jennifer, thank you–the shoes are great! On the link it says “ties at the ankle.” Does that mean the bow is a long sash that either wraps around the ankle or makes a bow, or is the bow separate (and can be removed)? Thank you so much!

    • September 21, 2017 / 10:27 am

No, it is a separate piece of suede that ties around the slingback portion. I should have shared a photo. The tie is about 10″ long so I suppose you could tie it around your ankle but it wouldn’t be long enough to make a bow that way. It can be totally removed as it is not sewn onto the shoe.

I read your blog faithfully, and I respect your sense of fashion. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and your adventures with all of us.

      Thanks for being here Peggy:)

  20. September 21, 2017 / 9:43 am

About the highest heel I can wear now is 2.5″ – but more often than not, I’m in flats or kitten heels when I’m “dressed up.” I have an adorable pair of leopard patterned sling-backs I got on sale from Chico’s a couple of years ago and they are super-comfy. I also have a pair of grey suede “loafer” kitten heels I’ve had for years and love wearing; they make me feel so elegant! Love your new shoes, though – they are simply lovely!

    • September 21, 2017 / 11:17 am

Grey suede sounds dreamy to me Candy. There’s something very special about that combo that I love!

Love those shoes, especially the bow on the back. So great to have a shoe that’s both cute and comfortable. You have on a darling outfit. Love the sleeves on your top.

    • September 21, 2017 / 10:15 am

Thanks Betty. I love this top too. It hides many things I like to hide:)

    September 21, 2017 / 10:34 am

I thought you handled that nasty post the best way possible: by ignoring and cutting off all connections.

I admire your courage to expose yourself to the public. I couldn’t do that. I have enjoyed your posts, not only for sharing your style, but more importantly, by sharing yourself, warts and all. I’ve gotten to know you through your grandson, your family travels, and friends. I love it when you share the difficult things that come with aging: hair loss, weight gain, teeth missing, etc, and how you deal with it. It makes us feel less alone.

    • September 21, 2017 / 6:15 pm

Thank you Rita! That’s why I share the good the bad and the ugly. Life has many challenges and pretending it doesn’t helps no one.

  24. September 21, 2017 / 11:21 am

Jennifer, take heart! Whenever you raise your visibility, either on purpose or completely by accident, there will be someone (usually another woman, I’m sorry to say) who will try to shoot your head off. Mean girls don’t necessarily ever die – they just age along with everyone else. Avoid them at all costs. If they get off a show at you, shrug and shake it off.

    • September 21, 2017 / 6:17 pm

Thank you sue Ellen. Visibility has its challenges and I’m up for them. Thanks for your support.

  25. September 21, 2017 / 1:07 pm

Oh, those are cute. I love them.

    • September 21, 2017 / 6:17 pm

They’re so comfy too. Thanks Jen!

These are amazing heels! I am sorry human heels caused you pain. You don’t deserve it, no one does. All I can say is Karma, haters will meet it someday.

    • September 21, 2017 / 6:22 pm

Thank you Cheryl. No one deserves to deal with an online troll but they are out there and strike at will. Xx

  27. September 21, 2017 / 5:09 pm

Cute pants and pretty shoes. They look great on you.

    • September 21, 2017 / 6:27 pm

Thanks Susie. This is such a departure for me but I’m loving them because they really put a spring in my step.

I LOVE the bow! Sadly, I find kitten heels hard to wear; something about the slightly set back placement of the heel upsets my balance just enough to make walking feel off kilter. They do look cute, tho!

    • September 22, 2017 / 4:39 pm

Oh no, that’s not good Pat. I steer clear of any shoe that affects my balance.

People do what people do. Pay no mind.

Love the shoes. Just after I turned 60 I started to feel a bit ridiculous in stilettos.
Lower heels just feel right to me.

Stilettos are a hard look for many and frequently make women walk less than graciously. XX
