How I Apply Rogaine

Today’s post is a little different than usual. It’s in answer to requests from several readers who share my struggle with thinning hair. I’ve discussed my hair loss journey with you many times because if you suffer from hair loss, I want you to know you are not alone. It can destroy a women’s confidence and those who suffer, need answers.

Jennifer Connolly of A Well Styled Life discussing RogaineI have Thyroid issues which cause it to cycle between hyper and hypo and wreak havoc on my hair. My hair goes through periods of intense shedding followed by slow regrowth. My physician suggested I try 5% Rogaine for men, to slow the thinning and encourage regrowth. It’s been very helpful.

Many of you have asked me how I apply Rogaine so I thought it might be helpful to show you. Here is a little video demonstrating how I apply it.

I’ve found the best pricing on Amazon and order 3 bottles every 3 months. If you stop using Rogaine, the new hair will fall out so I plan to continue using it to maintain my hair.

I hope this is helpful and thanks for sharing your struggles with me.

Jennifer: Great video and so heartbreaking for us shedders. Mine, like yours is in the front and sides. I have tried the laser and for all the hard work, really didn’t accomplish much. I sold the kit and if you look on e-bay, there are hundreds for sale. I, like you, are going to try Rogaine again. I also have stopped blowdrying my hair on top with a lot of heat. It seems to have helped a little. I went to a stylist and she said I could try extension, but it won’t help the top where there is the most loss. Anyway, thanks for sharing…

    1. Look into a topper!! Extensions won’t help the front and top and they exert presuure on the hair they are attached to.

  2. Jennifer, thank you for this helpful info. I have a couple of episodes of thinning hair. The most recent seems to have been triggered by Covid. After 50 plus years of having enough hair for 2 women it was upsetting the first time I started losing hair. I have also used the 5% minoxidil (foam) and am currently treating my thin spots. I had one suggestion. In the morning I apply it like you do in this video, applying it from front to back. In the evening I part my hair from ear to ear and apply it side to side. I’m using a makeup brush with stubby bristles to spread the foam. I think it increased my ability to cover all of my scalp each day by alternating directions like this. One last tip—a young friend with a patchy beard uses it on his face and it works great. I’ve been using it on my disappearing eyebrows with no problems for years. Thank you for sharing your experience! Warmest regards from North Carolina, USA southeast.

    1. Thanks for sharing how you apply it, Michele. It’s a real challenge.

  3. I didn’t know you were using Rogaine. My derm put me on it just this week. Thank you for the video. It really is easier than I thought it would be. I am hopeful. Fortunately I did not buy the foam. Are you taking any other supplements such as biotin?

  4. Hi Jennifer,

I really appreciate your video. I have been struggling with the foam and absolutely hate it! It makes my hair stiff and sticky! I am switching to liquid tomorrow, after watching your video.
Thank you for your blog. This is by far the best one I have seen.

  5. If you use hairspray do you have to wash it out at night when you put the Rogaine on?

    1. I do use hairspray and no, I don’t wash it out to apply my Rogaine

  6. Thanks for the video! I just started using this morning. A question for you — after you use the dropper in lines over your scalp as in your video, you don’t rub it in to spread it to the areas in between those lines? Thanks for your help.

    1. No, I squeeze the dropper slowly which deposits a small amount along the parts. It dries very quickly. I wish you great success. Be patient. it takes several months to see results.

  7. I am thinking of trying rogaine, i bought the foam 4 months ago but am terrified to try because of the hair loss that happens when you start! Did you lose hair when you started? Alot?
I have a long pixie cut.
I wash my hair once a week. Every morning, I brush, style with my hands and use hair spray, Can I use this if my hair has other hair products in it, like hair spray, texturing powder, etc.
To have to use this morning & evenings is a pain.
Also to shampoo and blow dry everyday is alot of manipulation of the hair. I am worried it will leave my hair wet & flat, I don’t want to have to rewet & style with a hairdryer and brush everyday, too much heat and tugging with a brush will do more damage especially to someone with thinning hair.
I heard that the liquid was very messy and drips.
Sorry for my lengthy comments. Thank you!

    1. I did not like the foam! The liquid is dead simple and not messy at all. Here is a video showing how I apply it. https://youtu.be/Omh2UCvOc5U
It only goes on your scalp, not your hair. That’s why I prefer the liquid. It doesn’t matter what’s on your hair because you put it only on the scalp.
I did not have any extra loss from starting the Rogaine.
Feel free to shoot me an email if you have more questions.

  8. I just watched an old video (2017) of you demonstrating how you apply Rogaine. I’m wondering if you still are
using it and recommend it. Thank you.

  9. anne friedman says:

hi, i just recently saw your post on rogaine. Could you share how long it took you to see results? googling it said 3 months, do you agree with that? thanks so much. I am considering starting it.

    Anne Friedman

    1. It did take 3-4 months before I saw the peach fizz regrowth coming in. I highly recommend twice a day and the 5% liquid solution. Good luck!!

  10. Thank you for this video. I have been losing hair for years and have considered using Rogane. I thought it was going to be a real pain, and considered not doing it. After seeing your video, I can’t believe how easy it is. I’m definitely going to do this!

  11. Love your video. I think you should occasionally do more. Thanks for the information and demonstration. Very helpful.

  12. Thank you for posting on this!
I’ve been experiencing hair loss lately…scary scene at the bottom of my shower, yikes! This video gives me the confidence to give Rogaine a go! Just looks like not a big deal! Also, can you list the dry shampoo that you use? I’ve yet find one that I’m happy with.
    Thanks again!!

  13. Hi Jennifer, thanks for sharing. Do you use the Minoxidil shampoo and conditioner as well as the 5% Rogaine?

    1. I don’t. When my hair is shedding heavily I use Nioxin shampoo and conditioner for thinning hair. It stimulates the Hair folicles.

  14. This is totally off the subject but watching your video, I love your eyeshadow. It makes your eyes look so blue. What brand and color is it?

    1. Thanks Caren! I’m wearing Nars in Bellisima. I apply the slightly shimmery beige all over my lid then use the taupe in the outside corner and the crease of my eyes. I’ve almost used the whole container so need to replace it. They don’t test on animals amd have no artificial fragrance.

      1. Thank you so much, it’s beautiful!!

  15. Thank you for this post. I also have thyroid issues and tend to have periods where my hair falls out more than usual. I have recently noticed some bald patches on my scalp. I had no idea they were there and were discovered by my stylist. Have you ever had any issues with patches along with thinning? I have always been curious about Rogaine and wondered how it is applied. Thanks for making me feel a little more confident if I decide to give it a try. This whole hair situation is kind of freaking me out! Thanks for making me feel like I’m not alone.

    1. You are not alone Linda!! I’ve never had patches. That sounds like alopecia which is an auto immune condition. I would check with your dermatologist. They sometimes give cortisone shots for those patches and there may be other things too. The Rogaine will help also but if it’s alopecia you’ll want to know. My Dr tells me I have seasonal alopecia. The fun never ends:) Let me know how it goes for you and thanks for sharing.

Thank you Jennifer! You are a gem to share with us. We do appreciate it. And all the other comments with suggestions are also helpful. It seems it takes a village for us thinning hair gals.

  17. My hair is silver now and I don´t color it. Have you seen any changes in hair color after using Rogain?

  18. Hi Jennifer, Thank you for the Rogaine information. Can Rogaine be applied to dry hair for those of us who don’t wash our hair everyday?

    1. Yes! My hair is dry in the evening when I apply it and also those days when I don’t wash it.

  19. Carolyn Rohrer Shaw says:

Thank you for this tutorial. I, too, suffer thyroid issues and move between hypo and hyperthyroidism from nodules on my thyroid. I have just begun with this product based on your experience. Additionally, I had brain surgery in May and had a big path shaved thru my skull. I lost not only the shaved hair, but nearby hair also disappeared. It is filling in ok.

    1. I’m sorry to hear about your brain surgery Carolyn! I hope everything is well now and I’m very glad the Rogaine is helping. Keep me posted on your progress and thanks for sharing!

  20. Thank you so much. I did wonder how it was applied exactly. I have thinning hair in the back crown. My hair originally began to shed a lot several years ago and a dermatologist assistant who works mostly with hair people did a sample on my hair that indicated I had a scalp fungus. After taking the medicine for that I had no shedding. It has started up again. I am hypo but have not been told that I alternate like you do. I also tried using castor oil treatments that didn’t work. It seems so hard to have to do the Rogaine morning and night. You make it look easy.

    1. It takes less than a minute morning and night. I’ve just made it part of my routine like brushing my teeth.

  21. Ann Hyles says:

You need to try Monet shampoo and hair growth products. They truly work. Awesome products.

    1. I’ve not heard of that brand, thanks for the suggestion Ann.

  22. Elizabeth Bienvenu says:

I have been using Pura dor shampoo for about 8 months. I will continue because it made my hair appear thicker and stopped me from loosing more hair.

    1. I haven’t heard of this brand before Elizabeth. Thanks for sharing with us I will have a look!

  23. I have hair that is even finer and thinner than yours. My dermatologist also said the 5% is the only one that really works, but it can cause facial hair growth sometimes. Have you had any issues with this? Also, does it leave an oily, or any, residue on your hair to weigh it down?

    1. I haven’t had any increase in facial hair (same chin bristles as always 😉 The liquid doesn’t leave any greasy residue or seem to weigh it down at all. It goes directly onto the scalp, not the hair so that may be why I prefer the liquid over the foam which did seem to stay in the hair.

  24. You might want to try Provillous. I have used this for several years, with much better results!

    1. I have never heard of this. Thanks Elaine…checking it out!

  25. Do you need to wash your hair every day?

    1. I wash it most days, but if I don’t, I use dry shampoo, after the Rogaine, to freshen it up and boost the volume.

  26. I’m considering using something for my thinning hair, when it gets to the point that I’m certain that it’s not seasonal. I’ll have to check with my doctor to be certain that Rogaine doesn’t interfere with any of my myriad other medications, but if it’s working for you, I’m optimistic! Thanks for your candor and your generosity around this subject; it is more important to women than we can easily express, and your openness about your hair has made it easier for me to confront my own situation!
    big hugs,
    Janice

    1. I am on several medications too so felt reassured when my doctor approved it. The pharmacist also signed off on it for me. Let me know how it goes for you, Janice. Thinning hair is stressful and so hard for women to deal with. Good luck! xx

  27. I really admire your willingness to share what is working for you!

    1. I share in hopes I can help anyone struggling with the same issues.

  28. I am really afraid to put anything in my ssytem that way. What are the safety issues?

    1. It was recommended by my Internist and my dermatologist so I did some research and found it had a long list of possible side effects, not unlike Tylenol. Luckily, I have had no side effects other than hair regrowth.
