New Shirtdress Options For Spring

Happy Thursday, ladies. I find the third piece a game-changer for most outfits. Adding something over a basic tee and jeans can elevate a simple combo to a polished look. Today’s outfit is a silhouette I see in more and more places, so I decided to give it a shot and love the results. The ootd I’m styling is a shirtdress with jeans.

Shirtdresses are plentiful online and in stores this time of year because they’re a comfy option that keeps you cool in warm weather. After a year in athleisure, I think many women are ready to wear real clothes because these casual dresses are selling like crazy. I just bought mine two weeks ago, and it’s already sold out! Some have shirttail hemlines, and many have belts, but the result is the same. Just unbutton a crisp, poplin shirtdress and toss it over a simple top and pants.

The beauty of this look is you get double duty out of the dress. When the weather does warm up, you can wear it on its own with or without a belt for an easy-breezy outfit.

This outfit formula is effortless and would work with almost any shirtdress. I popped mine over a classic cotton tank and some high waist stretch slim jeans. The jeans are described as heavily sanded and whiskered. To me, they’re just faded to the point of being extra casual without any holes or distressing. They’re size from 24-34. I’m wearing a 27, which feels snug around the waist…but remember, I am very straight through the torso, meaning I am not curvy.

I wore my favorite white wedge sandals with the resin buckle that you’ll see me often wearing this spring/summer. They have a working buckle so I was able to widen them for my wide feet They’re stable to walk in and give me a couple of extra inches in height.

I was asked earlier this week for my toenail polish color. I do my own pedicures and always have. This is the Essie Gel Couture in Pre-show Jitters. The couture combo really stays on so I can get two+ weeks out of it. It’s my go-to color every summer because it goes with everything.

I went with simple silver accessories to keep the look streamlined. Just an oversized bangle that I’ve owned for years, similar here, here, and here,Ā  favorite cable earrings from my daughter, and a snake print belt with silver buckle. That little bit of print on my belt adds enough interest without being too busy in this modern look.

I really like the concept, but I think I’d prefer the shirtdress to be a little shorter and white looks a bit clinical to me. Maybe that’s just because I have so many medical appointments and see more than my fair share of lab coats!

    1. My husband and I both thought it looked like a lab coat, but to didnā€™t stop me from enjoying it:)

I love the look! I think I would wear the shirt dress more like this instead of the dress. I love the crisp white look.

  3. I recently bought a duster that is fun to wear as a third piece (feels so current and chic!). So I wanted to like this shirtdress look. But on me, I don’t think it would work – perhaps because the dress is longer than a regular duster. I am wondering if a shorter shirtdress would be attractive on someone my height (5’2″)? Recently I saw a red and white striped shirtdress available in a petite size on the J Crew website. I might buy that dress and try wearing it with blue jeans or white pants.

    1. The length is definitely as issue. I like ones that are too short to wear as dresses but perfect as a third layer.

Love the shirt/dress with tee and jeans.

  5. Not so sure about this look. I know it’s a dress, but it seems too long to put over jeans. Interesting concept though; that I wouldn’t have thought of. I like everything else about the outfit, I just think the shirt dress would look better just a tad shorter. It’s fun to see new ideas, like the kimonos you featured the other day. I bought the one from Target. Can’t wait for it to come! Love your posts.

  6. Though I do love many of the kimonos and ruanas that you have modeled, I personally find a shirt dress is more versatile for myself due to my lifestyle plus for the climate that I live in. (i.e.: Can at least wear five ways and weather permitting a long sleeved one will carry me from early Spring right into early Fall). Do like the way you have styled it and feel it would even look great with the shorts you modeled yesterday. (Buttoned down to the waistline/sleeves casually rolled up ….. just my thought … ā˜ŗ.) -Brenda-
P.S.: Envy your weather as we woke up this morning with a skiff of snow of the ground.

    1. oops …. on the ground.

  7. You look fantastic in this outfit! I know you said it sold out weeks ago but would you mind telling us the brand? Itā€™s unusual to find a shirt dress without those high side slits?

    1. Itā€™s Nordstrom house brand. I couldnā€™t even find a link to share, sorry. If they restock I will share it.

  8. I love the belt, it really adds something to the t and jeans. Iā€™ve been avoiding wearing belts lately, maybe itā€™s time to re-think that. But I would want a different third piece, something with color or pattern. With my coloring, a white summer dress wouldnā€™t be a good choice, and as a duster, this one really does look like a lab coat. For a little arm coverage, I have a light blue linen jacket that seems to go with everything.

  9. I have a J. Crew shirtdress and it is beautifully made…..just an absolute BEAR to iron. I’m using it as a swim suit coverup where it doesn’t matter so much.

  10. For me, the addition of the white sandals pulls this look together. If they were another colour, I don’t think it would be cohesive.
    Love this look!

  11. Itā€™s an absolute A+ for this featured look today! You look so put together and I feel that itā€™s a style that I could wear. As Marian mentioned, a denim shirt dress may be more to my liking. By carefully adding a minimal pop of accessories, this look stays fresh and modern. Oh, how I wish I could wear those sandals!
    Love the total look!

  12. A thin dark wash denim shirt dress is on my wish list. Worn open over jeans or leggings when cool, then take off the pants, button it up and wear as a dress when it warms up. It basically doubles as a cardigan or light coat.

It,s a versatile piece and looks great on you, but I’d prefer a color rather than white. I’m.glad its trendy this yrar ….more choices!

    1. Ooh, that would be a good shirt dress!

  13. This is so cute on you and I have not tried a shirt dress let alone one that you wear open like this. On you it looks great, on me I’d feel like I had on my lab coat but….maybe a different color would make a big difference too. Your hair always looks so cute. I need to watch your hair tutorial again šŸ™‚

You just look so great in nearly everything you put on! Iā€™m just not sure if this look for me however. I like the ruana touch over tees and jeans because many are wonderfully colorful! All white and so much of it with my complexion ā€”Iā€™m not too certain of. Would this look work if the shirt dress was of a bright color? Or a teeny print or stripe? Still considering…..
