Would You Wear It – Melton Long Coat

Would You Wear It – Melton Long Coat

I am always fascinated with the way some mannequins are dressed. We know or assume that stores create these displays to show us new merchandise and perhaps to give us stying ideas. I wonder if they care if we find them pleasing or wearable.

It’s time for would you wear it with my friend Pam. Each week we share a mannequin with our readers and ask if you would wear what it is modeling. We love to hear how you could make a look work for you or why it doesn’t work for you.

So tell me, ladies, would you wear this and why or why not?

How could you make it work for your body, your lifestyle and your style?

Here are a few weekend sale updates-

Talbots – 40% off one item with the code SMILE40 and free shipping over $150. I was in today and bought this lightweight sweater. It’s a great weight for this time of year. This sweater jacket is wonderful but they didn’t have the color I wanted in the store. It’s a nice heavyweight, without being bulky and runs large, so I suggest sizing down. This vest is adorable. I see it over a black sweater and pants.

Banana Republic – up to 40% off must-have styles. I ordered this jacket in navy, petite medium. I also ordered this one in off-white in regular petite. I didn’t want to miss the 40% off discount and wasn’t sure of my size. The shipping was free and I plan to return the one that doesn’t fit.

Macy’s – great shoe sale is on with a 40% off when you buy 2 or more and 30% off when you buy one pair with the code GREAT.

Ann Taylor – 50% off wear-now styles with the code SOEASY.
Loft – 50% off tops; 40% off dresses, jeans, and sweaters; 30% off jackets and accessories.
Now let’s go see what Pam’s mannequin is wearing here.

I would wear this, since it looks like it would keep me war here in chilly Colorado. I’d swap out the jeans for a slimmer fit, as wide leg jeans don’t appeal to me.

I would wear coat here in Canada minus the. Jeans. Would style with black tights, black skirt and tall black boots. Would also look for a great hat and gloves.

Great look! The coat is lovely and I really like the printed sweater underneath. I would wear this, for sure.

  3. October 5, 2019 / 4:12 am

I would wear this coat! It does get chilly here in New England, in the deep winter months, and the longer than jacket length works for me and my body type. Think warmth. I might like it better for me in camel or black, for me.

  4. Wendy Toomey
    October 5, 2019 / 4:20 am

I love the colour & idea of the coat however those big lapels would overwhelm me! The length would be great to help keep my legs warm in our chilly winters in Ontario. Not living the rest of the outfit so much.

      Loving not living!

I love coats. I love this coat. I love this coat with the wide jeans.
I don’t like the sweater with it; I think it takes away from the classic look of the rest of it, and I don’t like the ring around the collar and hips part.
I would wear the coat and jeans a lot. But, I already have coats and coats which languish because I live in a climate where in “winter” you get to wear a coat *that day*.
Yes, I would wear it, but buy it? Alas and alack. Could not justify.

I’d choose a different sweater, but love the jeans and coat! A great look.

    October 5, 2019 / 4:25 am

I would definitely wear the coat. It’s beautiful! I like it with the sweater, but not the jeans. They are too casual for the sweater and coat I think.

    October 5, 2019 / 4:30 am

Today the awful heat spell has broken in North Carolina, so I can look at coats! I really like this coat although I wonder how long it would be on my 5’3″ body. I wouldn’t want such a beautiful coat dragging on the ground!. No to jeans and sweater for reasons others outlined.

    • Nicki
      October 5, 2019 / 5:31 am

Memee, I’m right here with you in North Carolina. I am 5ft tall and echo your sentiments on the coat. No to the jeans and sweater too.

    • Lynne
      October 5, 2019 / 6:25 am

I do like the classic look of the coat, but would not choose it for myself. I’m 5’2” and long coats make me look like I’ve been swallowed by the coat, instead of wearing it. I also think I’d wear darker jeans or black jeans with that sweater.

  9. October 5, 2019 / 4:41 am

All those colors ar so dreary. Where are the reds.etc.I like color! Also it is too hot most of the year here in Florida to wear a heavy coat iike that. So no, I would not buy this. LIke the design though,

    • Terri
      October 5, 2019 / 7:33 am

I love the coat and would wear it, but my first thought was “I wish it was red!”

  10. Gloria Pigue Miller
    October 5, 2019 / 4:41 am

I would definitely wear this entire outfit. Very simple. Sweater, jeans, coat. No extravagant layering. The length of the coat would work well in the Windy City of Chicago area.

  11. Michele
    October 5, 2019 / 4:51 am

The lapels on the jacket are too big for my taste, but otherwise I really like it. Would be wonderful during our cold Indiana winters. The pattern of the sweater under the coat is fine, just not a fan of the style. I don’t care for the dark trim top and bottom. Personally I would wear skinny jeans tucked into boots with this outfit.

  12. Linda
    October 5, 2019 / 4:54 am

If I lived in a cool climate (not South Georgia), I would wear the entire ensemble. While I would prefer a v-neck, I like the cool tones of the sweater. I would give the jeans a try, but I’m not sure that they would work on my short frame.

  13. MP
    October 5, 2019 / 4:57 am

That coat is beautiful! I would definitely wear it. The style, the color, the length – it all works for me. The sweater and jeans NO. I’m sick of animal prints so the sweater is a No. I would not wear wide leg jeans.

  14. Wendy Dunbar
    October 5, 2019 / 5:05 am

I love the look! Reminds me of an outfit I’d have worn as a student in my 20’s. I’m loving all these retro looks, down to the wide-leg jeans. However, as a woman now in my 60’s, I’m not sure this would work for me proportionally. I like each piece individually, although I’m not generally a fan of animal print; I might try it in a smaller dose such as a bag or shoes. I’d wear the coat with slimmer jeans or pants. Overall look is great for someone who is tall & slim; that’s not me anymore!

    October 5, 2019 / 5:12 am

So many ways to style this coat… love the comments already shared. I would wear in a petite for my 5’3” height and have some fun with colourful scarf and gloves.

  16. Dianne
    October 5, 2019 / 5:15 am

Yes, yes to the coat!! Jeans, no thank you. They are not attractive at all. And the animal print… someone please tell me they will be gone soon. So tired of them!!!

  17. Lori Stewart
    October 5, 2019 / 5:27 am

I love the long coat and it would definitely get worn here in the DC area. The jeans I feel would look better in a dark wash, and I don’t love the sweater. Maybe it is pulled out of shape, but the neckline looks wonky. I think a sweater in a rich color and jeans in a dark wash would be perfect. .

    October 5, 2019 / 5:28 am

Nice outfit if you live in a cold climate. Not for me since I live in Florida

  19. Linda
    October 5, 2019 / 5:50 am

Definitely would wear…if I were taller and slimmer. Double-breasted coats are almost always too bulky for me, and same for wide leg jeans, but I love the look!

  20. Corrie Zacharias
    October 5, 2019 / 5:52 am

I would wear it if it weren’t double-breasted; that just makes me look wider than I already am (and here in Maine we do button our coats)! I realize that the lapels would have to change if you make it single-breasted. So I guess what I’m saying is that I would definitely wear a long coat, in this color. Swap out the jeans for bootcut or straight-leg, and swap the sweater for something else with a v-neck, and I’d be good to go 😉

  21. RoseAG
    October 5, 2019 / 5:52 am

Not for me. I’ve had long wool coats before and while they’re nice for the 2-3 weeks of extremely cold Winter weather we have in Maryland, they’re heavy and not waterproof for the rest of Winter, which is less cold but often wet. I also prefer a coat that can go in the washer as I”m always brushing up against hand rails and escalators and they get dirty.

I like the pants and if I were going that way with an outfit might put a short gray blazer with them. With wide legs I need my top to stop just below the waist or I start looking boxy.

  22. October 5, 2019 / 5:53 am

Yes! If it got cold enough, I would wear this coat! I like it!

  23. Karen Gaston
    October 5, 2019 / 5:56 am

It all looked too bland for me. The jeans with black and white top was good, but the dark
grey coat just pulled the outfit down. My suggestions for different coat colors would have been black, red, or white. For shoes, if she had them, I would suggest, black or red.

  24. sheryl
    October 5, 2019 / 5:58 am

If i lived up North, yes…I would jazz it up with a bright printed scarf though.

  25. Susan
    October 5, 2019 / 6:13 am

I love this coat. The jeans are nice not that wide. The sweater is too short to wear with skinny jeans or leggings.I like the whole outfit, it could use a scarf and hat.I would not wear white boots in the slush we have here in winter!

  26. RpsMc
    October 5, 2019 / 6:53 am

Yes, really love long costs enough though I’m a petite size. Reminds me of years past living in New England. I love the long coat look proportioned for a petite size. I would prefer another bolder color coat…black, deep navy. Also like wide leg pants. I would wear a different sweater the one pictured is too short.

  27. Sabrina
    October 5, 2019 / 7:11 am

If it had dark wash jeans, it’d be very much my look already.

  28. Maurine
    October 5, 2019 / 7:11 am

Love this classic coat and the warm grey tone. I’d wear the outfit for a casual outing and throw the coat on over a business outfit or even a dressier night out. The long length is perfect to wear with flats, booties or tall boots and definitely helps keep one warmer in northern winters. Dressier times I’d wear it with grey or black toned gloves, more casual I have warm gloves in perky colors and a striped or bright wool scarf tossed around my neck.

  29. Rose
    October 5, 2019 / 7:13 am

I would definitely wear the sweater and coat. Although the coat might have to be shortened for me. Don’t care for the wider legged jeans so I would wear skinny jeans. I live in the northwest so would be perfect.

  30. Linda Lennon
    October 5, 2019 / 7:18 am

Now that I live in the California desert I have no use for a coat like this. The jeans caught my eye, though. They appear to be a lighter fabric which I would wear all year here. The sweater is attractive but too short for my frame.

  31. MRSBEN2
    October 5, 2019 / 7:22 am

Re the coat; can see this style working for other body types but not for mine namely due to its exaggerated collar and lapels. Also; regardless of its long length I would consider its ‘overall’ fabric content as it may not meet my Fall or Winter needs in practicality. Do like the sweater and would certainly wear it but not particularly fond of the cut ‘n style of the jeans even though they are probably somewhat comfortable.

    • Sue
      October 5, 2019 / 3:18 pm

I’d prefer a pair of black pants with this look instead of jeans, then would like it a lot. The jeans are just too casual for the rest of the outfit, and that hem on the jeans makes them even more casual.

  32. Eileen
    October 5, 2019 / 7:34 am

I wouldn’t wear the look as presented, I prefer a lighter weight wool coat, length ok though, the ring around the neck of the sweater isn’t that appealing, the pants in a darker wash would be better. The idea is wearable for me at 5’5”.

  33. Jane
    October 5, 2019 / 7:47 am

Love the look! Looks wearable, I would add a silk scarf to keep the wool coat away from my neck, otherwise perfect.

    • October 5, 2019 / 8:26 pm

I have trouble with wool against my neck too

  34. Dawn
    October 5, 2019 / 7:59 am

I would love the coat with dark wash slim jeans and a turtle neck sweater in a bright or light grey color. No to the sweater and the jeans. I’m 5’7”, so the coat would be great for cold days in Colorado.

  35. October 5, 2019 / 8:07 am

Yes to the coat! Absolutely! It would be a perfect addition to my wardrobe for this time of year here in Alberta, Canada where the temperatures haven’t been much above 0ºC (32ºF) recently. As for the rest of the outfit, I would choose a darker, narrower jean and while I like the animal print, I’d prefer a different style sweater without the black band at the waist and at the neck.

    • October 5, 2019 / 8:09 am

By the way, the link to the coat doesn’t seem to be working. I get the following message when I try it: “The link you clicked on is malformed. Contact the editor of the originating page.”

I would have to skin the coat for here on the coast. I’ve never owned one. I would wear the sweater but prefer small v neck. Add my black boots, black vest, I’m good to go. Probably add a red scarf and bag.

  37. Eve
    October 5, 2019 / 8:16 am

Thanks spell check. I, of course, meant skip not skin.

  38. Joanna
    October 5, 2019 / 8:32 am

No, is the simple answer. I don’t like the wide lapel collar. I like to pop mine against the cold and you can’t with this cut. I wore long wool coats when I lived other places, wore dresses, and headed off to work but not any longer. Here on the coast, we have a need for waterproof in the winter, as we get lots of rain but the temps do not get too low. I also like a hood. I don’t like the black animal print top, nor the light wash, wide leg jeans. I prefer my jeans to be a dark wash or black and straight leg or skinny. I find the whole outfit to be dreary.

  39. October 5, 2019 / 8:38 am

As much as I love it and it would look good on me, I would not buy it. If it’s cold enough to wear it, it’s too open around the neck. Also, I’ll bet it’s heavy.

For my visits to cold climates I now chose practical and comfort: a long midnight blue tailored down coat with a closed neck and hood with a very soft velvety lining.

If I lived in a cold city and wore nice office clothes daily, I’d choose this as one of my coats because it is beautiful.

  40. Karen
    October 5, 2019 / 8:56 am

I would if the lapels weren’t so wide. I hv a variety of duster sweaters I wear throughout the spring summer and early fall. Of course I’d hv to feel the weight of this jacket

  41. Ann
    October 5, 2019 / 9:45 am

I live in Arizona where it never gets cold enough to wear a heavy coat like this. But my comment is why so dreary colors to be worn in dreary, cold weather. When I lived in the Boston area I bought a red wood tuxedo style coat so I would look bright and cheery. I loved it and so did everyone else.

  42. October 5, 2019 / 9:47 am

I like the coat, but not for me. That style would make me look even thicker than I am and I have no need for such a heavy moulton coat in SoCal. Love the leopard print sweater and I have one very similar. I prefer my sweater because it does not have a black band at the bottom. I’m not sure about the jeans,I would have to try them on. I like them, but some wide legs look good on me and others do not. The weight of the denim makes a big difference in how good different style jeans look or feel on my body. I like the individual pieces in this outfit, just not exited about them together

  43. Cyndi
    October 5, 2019 / 10:03 am

Beautiful coat. I like the length and the color, not crazy about the double breasted style, wider lapels, or large pocket flaps. So while I like it, I think I could find a coat I’d like better

  44. annie vanderven
    October 5, 2019 / 10:13 am

no lapels too wide would overwhelm my petite frame

  45. beth byrd
    October 5, 2019 / 10:29 am

This is such a classic look and I adore it. In fact, I’m probably going to incorporate this look into my wardrobe.

I love the subdued colors with the ‘pop’ of the leopard top. The coat is wonderful in every way — particularly the grey color.

I’m not sure how I’d look in the style of jeans here, but I am going to try them.

Great post today, Jennifer. I love when the mannequin is “wearing” something I like.

    • October 5, 2019 / 8:23 pm

I bought the jeans so we’ll see if I’m happy when I style them.

  46. jmp
    October 5, 2019 / 10:58 am

I would wear this. It has a classic look, and I love the gray color. It reminds me of a coat I wore in college.

  47. Linda
    October 5, 2019 / 10:58 am

I’d wear the coat. Really like it and the sweater, but would pick different pants.

  48. Denise
    October 5, 2019 / 11:29 am

I love the coat. Would like it a little better if it were single breasted. Here in Chicago it would get a lot of use. I’d give it color with a brighter scarf and gloves.

  49. Susanm
    October 5, 2019 / 12:30 pm

I love this coat and would wear it with a bright scarf and patent leather boots. The wide leg jeans are fine (I have a pair from several years ago), but I would pass on the sweater. It’s busy and takes away from the coat.

  50. Lois Williams
    October 5, 2019 / 2:01 pm

This combo would not be the best choice for me. As I’m aging I find gunmetal grey just does nothing for my blonde, blue eyed, Fair complexion or for my psyche. The jeans would work well on my 5’11” frame but I’d wear a shorter jacket or vest with white bulky turtleneck sweater. I’d love the coat in camel.

  51. Martha Edmundson
    October 5, 2019 / 2:30 pm

I do love a coat like this. But…I’m short and a little round. I don’t wear double breasted clothing. The wide lapels would overwhelm my petite frame.

  52. October 5, 2019 / 3:42 pm

    Hi Jennifer,
I love coats! This one misses the mark for me. Not sure if its the lapels or the placement of the pockets? I also love color in a coat as the winter months can be so dreary. Love that you and Pam do this.

    Happy Saturday!

  53. Becky
    October 5, 2019 / 4:40 pm

I like the color & style of the coat, but it is a little to long for my short legs. It looks like it would be warm on a blustery Midwest winter day. I like the sweater but not the jeans.

  54. Lee Wilkinson
    October 5, 2019 / 6:52 pm

Yes! I’d wear it. I love the style & the colour. It would need altering. I’m short so I’d choose a single breasted version – one that would magically appear, with slimmer lapels! I’d get it shortened to get the proportions right. I’d certainly not wear that jersey, but find something that better suited the classic, smooth matte finish, plus slimmer trousers.

  55. Deb
    October 6, 2019 / 6:32 am

Like coat but lapels are too wide. Would wear with high boots , colorful scarf & gloves and buttonedup.
