Kicking Off The Weekend

Kicking Off The Weekend

Memorial Day weekend is upon us and I’m more than ready:) We were hoping to get away to the coast with our little trailer but of course, everything is closed so…we plan to do more gardening, (mostly him), read (mostly me), and try to give each other a bit of extra breathing room. Because although we’ve been married for 43 years…I’ve worked from home for the last 15 years and he is retired, we’re not used to this much togetherness;) How are you holding up?

It’s time for would you wear it and halleluiah, I got out to see an actual mannequin:) A few stores near us opened up yesterday and I braved one of them.

If you’re new here, each Saturday my friend Pam and I share a mannequin we have photographed and ask our readers if they would wear what it’s modeling. We do this to better understand your style goals and to share styling ideas in the comment section.

So tell me, ladies, would you wear any, part or all of these and how could you style it to work for your shape and lifestyle?

Please keep it personal to you.

Everything you could ever need or want seems to be on sale this weekend except this one bookcase that I’ve had my eye on for the last 6 weeks! Seriously? What are the odds? I need a very specific (this) height and (this) width to fit into my family room and this one is perfect. Yes, it’s for kids but books are books. It was on sale for a nanosecond in April, which I missed and now it’s full-priced. All. The. Time! I’ll wait and in the meantime, I’m taking advantage of the sales on summer clothes and skincare.

Here are a few sales that caught my eye-

Talbots Summer savings Event is on and it is amazing.

Tops for $19.99

Bottoms for $29.99

Dresses and jackets for $39.99 and 50% off the rest!

I bought these jeans, this denim shirt, another pair of these espadrilles, these flat espadrilles, this little cotton scarf,  and this summer blazer. The prices are so amazing, I may order a few more.

Banana Republic – up to 70% off everything!

Ann Taylor– 60% off your purchase with the code SUMMER.

Loft – 60% off everything with free shipping and returns for loyalty members (which is free to join) or 50% off with the code FRIEND.

Macy’s – 25-60% off select styles.

William’s Sonoma Home – 25% off your order with the code HOME

Now let’s head over to Over 50 Feeling 40 and see what Pam’s mannequin is showing this week.

Be well and remember to wear what makes you happy and feel confident.

I love the outfit on the right and yes, I would wear it. The green jeans look like they would wear me, and by that I mean I think that is all anyone would see when I entered a room. The top on the left is not a good color for me and I do not care for the pattern.

I love the outfit on the right – both in color and style. I’m not into many floral prints, but the top combined with the stipes really speaks to me. Being short – I would have to assess whether the pants are a little too wide for me. Probably some sort of heel would pull together this look for me and give me better proportion. Espadrilles with a wedge might be fun, but again, would have to try the whole outfit on.

I loved your animal print sweater form J.Crew. Went to purchase, gave size and information of address, credit card stuff . I guess it crashed ! I was not able to get to finish to pay. Very sad. You looked fabulous in that sweater. I wanted one to wear north to New England in the fall.😞

Do like the cool ‘n breezy tops but unfortunately not at my age as thanks to Mother Nature my arms are beginning to show signs of crepe. (In other words, they could use a touch up with an iron …. lol!) In respect to colours, meh however feel the one on the right would work exceptionally well with blue denim. As for the pants on the left with their bell bottom design agree with some others; too 70’s for my taste and for those on the right prefer a wide leg style from the waistline down, but do appreciate both their lengths.
Wishing you a great weekend Jennifer.

I’m short, 68 and not into either outfit. The pant are too wide legged and I have too much cleavage for the tops.

I wouldn’t wear either I don’t like colors and both are a little to boho for me.

Both outfits are a little too 1970’s looking as shown. Been there , done that! The only thing I would consider buying now is the small floral print top with the contrasting print straps. It looks cool and comfortable for a very warm day, but I would not wear it with those mustard pants I would wear that top untucked with some white pants, maybe white jeans.

I like them all but I wouldn’t wear the wide leg pants. I would wear a jacket or kimono over the tops. If I was young, I would wear them the way they are. I especially like the outfit on the right. Those colors are so warm and friendly. You just know the person wearing that is a lot of fun to talk too.

I love the two tops and would wear both. While I love solids and neutrals, I like prints sometimes. These would be cool for a hot Vegas summer. I would pair with a white or blue jean jacket, long cardigan, or linen shirt for inside air-conditioned spaces. I would pass on the green pants as I think they would overwhelm me. I love the camel pants and would try them. I like wide leg pants, but proportions have to be right. I have a pair in navy that I love. I do have camel utility pants from Chico’s that are slim and would look fabulous with the tops. I would pair with sneakers or flat sandals or slides with a block heel.

These are a no for me. They are too reminiscent of my 1970’s style, & that girl is long gone & won’t be coming back.

Like the tops but not the pants.

I got a chuckle when you mentioned what you bought and may buy more!

I’m not buying anything new for summer. Had gotten a few things last year and they will last me for a few years. Can you read between the lines and read/know that I don’t like to shop!

    Enjoy the weekend.

The shoulders are a little too bare (but would work with a third piece) and the legs are a little too wide for me. Younger Me might have loved them. I like the colors and pattern though. And while I might be tempted to tie a knit cardigan or sweatshirt around my waist (in a verrry casual look) I don’t think a denim jacket is ever going to be flattering in that position on the body – guessing that was just a suggestion that a third piece could be added. Have a great weekend everyone!

The colors of the pants remind me of fall. Like others, I am not a fan of the wide leg pants. I am not crazy about my arms so even though, I like both tops, I’d have to wear a jacket or sweater.

This is the first time I do not think I would wear anything here. Would not flatter me and doesn’t meet my style adjectives and I would need a third piece over the tops.

Hi Jennifer, Thanks for checking out the stores and sending us these two looks. I like them both! I love the wide legs and the colors. I just ordered a pair of wide leg pants in the gold color…hope they fit! Since my arms need a little coverage, I would add a jean jacket or a button down cardigan to the gold outfit, throw on a long necklace, slip into a pair of tennis shoes or a cute sandal and I would be ready to go. The new styles are so fun and why not give them a try. We have been stuck at home long enough – let’s change up our look and have some fun!!

The color mix here doesn’t work for me. The dark forest green doesn’t seem to fit in with the color palette.

However, I do like the yelllow/gold pants on the right with the yellow/gold print top on the left. I could see pairing those pieces together!! It would be a wonderfully cool and stylish ensemble!

There’s that dark green color I see everywhere. I like that color although not for work. I don’t like the flare on the pants. I would wear the jean jacket. Pretty much the same comments for the other mannequin too. Also, I use a wheelchair when I go out and too much fabric (flared pants) is a hazard. Fabric gets caught in the wheels.

The colors, don’t work with my coloring. Interestingly, the right color combination of blue and ochre, was shown a lot in France when I visited about a year ago. The square neck I like as I have small shoulders and chest, but would prefer more sun coverage with sleeves. High waisted pants I like , but the green looks really stiff, so no. I just hope avocado appliances just don’t come back.. what am I thinking… everything comes back! Duh.

I love both tops! I think if it was very warm I would wear either of them. I hate bra straps showing so that would be interesting.
I’m not a fan of the wide leg pants, the colours are a very nice change.

I don’t care for either pair of pants. I don’t like the colors or the flared leg. The tanks are cute but I wouldn’t buy them because they wouldn’t hide my bra straps. My tank-style tops all have straps wide enough to allow me to wear a regular bra.

Looks like the wide flared pants are coming back. (Not sure I like it all that well.). I like the outfit on the right, but the colors are all wrong for me. I’d have to pass on these outfits.

Both outfits are a definite NO for me. But I do like the color combination on the right. And I agree with you: this is not a typical Memorial Day weekend! Feels really strange. Many of our stores here in FL are slowly opening up but I have mixed feelings about going. Shopping was one of my favorite hobbies before Covid-19. How safe did you feel?

I hear you on the too much togetherness. I hope to get through a backed up stack of magazines and a good book over the next few days. Both ensembles are nice. I’d wear the one on the right, in a different color scheme. Flattering silhouette. Hope we’re inching closer to our lunch and your beach getaway. xo

Again they are both winners for me..love the cropped pants and the longer wider leg green ones.. I would more than likely wear an open front longer tunic style sweater with both..just to camouflage some extra rolls etc. But both great choices today..Happy Memorial weekend to all..We had our first long weekend of the season last weekend…

I like the outfit on the left. I like that the pants are full length and the color would go with many items I already own. The top is cute but I would have to wear a jacket or light cardigan to cover my back and shoulders. I’m not sure about the other top so I would have to try it on, but the color and length of the orange pants would not suit me at all.

I have been following that bookcase in a 3 shelf, as well as a dresser for a couple weeks and absolutely no sales! No coupons in the mail and the shipping code does not apply to furniture. I’m a frequent shopper with them and it’s disappointing.

I like the outfit on the right and would wear it. The top is summery and would also look great with denim shorts. I would pass on the outfit on the left – the colours in the top would wash me out and as much as I love green, the wide legs would overwhelm me. Gorgeous weekend in my city and I plan to spend most of it outside.

Yes to all❣️ The wide leg, high waisted pant would make my legs look longer while skimming over my “fluffy” figure bits and hold in my tummy. The wide cropped top gives the illusion that I have a waist but choose not to flaunt it. Love any clothing that tames my tummy.

Like Linda said in an earlier comment, I’m flashing back to the 70’s also. I wouldn’t wear the green pant outfit but I am intrigued about the outfit on the right.
I love the colours in the top and l love the pants. I definitely would have wore them together in the 70’s And they would have fit fabulous but today I’m thinking those pants need a more fitted top to balance me out, like a fitted t or tank. And the top needs a more fitted bottom Like skinny jeans or a straight cut skirt. I’d definitely try them on for fun.
Ladies all this talk about not showing your arms!!! Please, your arms are beautiful. Think of all the people they have hugged. Think of all the loads they have carried. So what if they aren’t as tight and svelte as they used to be. Be proud of your body just the way it is. ❤️

These outfits are both a little to tenny bopper for me. Not enough coverage in the tops and just a bit too flare legged for me. I’m sure they would look cute on someone younger than 73! LOL!

  44. Linda V
    May 23, 2020 / 5:24 am

No, I would not wear any of this! I NEVER wear sleeveless tops, and I do not look good in wide legged pants. Also, I do not like florals or these colors!

  45. Catherine
    May 23, 2020 / 5:21 am

I want to like these styles and I am using my imagination to put them in colours I would wear. However I am struggling with the wide leg, my legs are pretty good feature and I hate to hide them. The tops would be great but I need bra friendly straps. I need the support and haven’t found a comfortable strapless for DDD.

I like the colors on the right. I wouldn’t wear that brassy brown close to my face, but as pants it’s does well, although it is a deep not-so-summery color. If I were to be going to New Hampshire, as we’ve often done in the past, I would take that. It would look good in a woodsy setting.

I am glad that we are too lazy to have moved out of the house we had when our children were small because it’s nice to have the extra rooms for situations like this. We also have a big dog who needs to be walked and that is a chance for us to be outside.

The colors on the wide leg pants seem more suited to my fall wardrobe. I prefer the ankle length of the pants on the right. I do see myself wearing both of the tops. I find that a smaller print can camouflage some imperfections that seem to be adding up lately. Lol I would pair them with one of my cool, linen type shirts that when left open, add that comfortable third piece magic. It just seems to give me that added confidence and helps me to pull together a look that works for me. I have several neutral colored crop pants that would work also.
Hope everyone has a great weekend! 🌸

It’s funny how our figure and style informs our response. I would totally wear the wide trousers – lovely colours – but not touch the tops. I am a medium sized rectangle shape, but with a big bust and a few years on me, so prefer higher necklines, covered shoulders and sleeves of some description.

Yes to both tops, and No to both pants for me. The tops are cute. I’d pair them with the lightest weight sweaters and a capri pant. This return to flared and wide leg pants is not very flattering on me, so I’d keep to a bottom that’s more fitted.

  54. Martha
    May 23, 2020 / 4:16 am

I would wear the tops maybe with a sheer kimono over them to cover up my heavy arms. The pants are too flared for my pear shape. Those never look good on me. I do like the colors though! I never tie anything around my waist. Don’t want to draw the eye there!

Well, I really am drawn to the two tops….especially if summer is its usual hot and humid. As for the pants, I like the teal -green color but NOT the wide flare styling. I’d prefer the pant style on right, but would try them on for the look on me. Just not sure if the color. In summer I usually stick with shorts and pants in white, khaki, pale madras. Some navy too.
