A Snowy Adventure And Double Cleansing

Happy Monday ladies. It’s just 4 days until Christmas and I’m almost ready. I have a few more things to buy, some more things to wrap, plus I need to order our organic turkey so we don’t end up with a huge one again. Today I’m musing about double cleansing, sunscreen, snow, and my LED red light mask.

Snow

I could not resist sharing this picture of my grandson from last year:)

Much of the Northeast has had a big snowstorm which I’ve been enjoying from my warm, dry, California town. I grew up on the east coast and was always thrilled when we got some snow for Christmas. When cabin fever set in yesterday,  we headed to Lake Tahoe in search of snow.

Truckee was very, very quiet. I don’t think I have ever seen it so empty. The small shops were open, most with barricades in front of the door so they could monitor how many shoppers were inside. I saw lots of cute things through the windows but stayed outside in the fresh air. Honestly, I wasn’t there to shop. I was there to breathe the clean mountain air and get a festive boost to my holiday spirit. I removed my mask quickly for photos, then put it right back on.

boots in snow

We did find some snow which made the trip worth it. It was hovering in the high 40’s so my cashmere v-neck, cashmere cardigan, and cashmere scarf kept me plenty warm.

These boots were a smart purchase this year because they’re roomy enough for warm socks and are water-resistant. I love hats of all kinds (except baseball caps which look dumb on me) but fedoras are my favorite because besides keeping my head warm, they help keep the sun off my face. When I found this wool version of my favorite straw hat, I knew I needed to add it to my ever-growing collection.

LED Red Light Mask

I wanted to give you an update on my Light Salon LED Red Light masks. I love them! They’re pricey for sure so they’re not for everyone. I have never been one to have facials and salon treatments which can really add up. I’d rather invest in an at-home device that I can use over and over.

These are soft and pliable so they’re very comfortable. They provide Red 633nm Light and Near-Infrared 830 nm Light which fights inflammation, encourages healing, calms redness, and evens skin tone. There are numerous studies touting the benefits of red light therapy but nothing conclusive. I use mine for 10 minutes each morning before I apply moisturizer and sunscreen. My skin feels amazingly soft and I also find them very relaxing.

Researchers have known about red light therapy for a while. But there aren’t a lot of studies on it, and they don’t know if it’s better than other types of treatment used to help you heal. Research shows RLT may smooth your skin and help with wrinkles. RLT also helps with acne scars, burns, and signs of UV sun damage. ~ Web MD

Sunscreen

This is a small rant – A case of Melanoma and multiple spots of Basal Cell Carcinoma has convinced me to take my sunscreen very seriously. In the USA, sunscreen is considered a drug by the FDA and as such, they require animal testing on all ingredients. This seriously curtails the availability of new and improved ingredients but surprisingly, they have left Avobenzone on the market which has been shown to be an endocrine disruptor and carcinogenic. I urge you to read labels and know what you’re rubbing on your skin.

Double Cleansing

I also encourage you to double cleanse your face at night, because a good sunscreen is meant to stay on. It takes more than a few splashes of cleanser and water to remove it. This is my second jar of the Farmacy Cleansing Balm and I love it!! I use this first, which easily melts off all my makeup and sunscreen. Then use a quick squirt of Super Food Cleanser, rinse with a facecloth and my face is super clean, but not stripped of its natural oils.

Do you double cleanse?

Thanks for reading and remember to wear what makes you feel confident.

  1. Love the picture of your Grandson. He is such a cutie.
Just finished a sleepover with our Granddaughter and Grandson. Did all kinds on stuff ( made peppermint bark and Christmas frosted trees).
I am numb or whipped out but very satisfied.
Love your outfit especially the hat .
Wish you and your family a blessed Christmas and New Year.
Thank you for your great blog witch I look forward to always.

    1. Thanks you so much Lin. That sounds wonderful!! Grandchildren are the best!! I hope you have a wonderful Christmas full of joy and love. xo

I just adore this look on you Jennifer. Presents as coordinated, comfy, stylish and warm. Those booties are so cute. They are presently sold out or I’d be purchasing a pair. The zebra handbag completes the look. Thank you for suggesting animal prints this year. I have a few pieces added to my wardrobe along with a Dolce & Gabbana leopard handbag, leopard cashmere scarf, Chico’s cheetah long sleeve Tee (layering piece) and my favorite – Naturalizer Macayla sneakers. Dressing in fun outfits helps to brighten up an otherwise strange and cloistering year.

PS: I miss weekend trips to Tahoe.

  3. Looking very chic Jennifer and do love your hat, but oh my does your husband know you are out and about with that festive debonair brute who is standing beside you? ☺ As for the little guy building the snowman; he is definitely a cutie.

  4. P.S. Your grandson is darling!

    1. Ah, thanks. He’s grown so much since
      last year, it’s amazing

  5. Jennifer, I envy you your trip to Truckee! One of my sons works for Vail Resorts, and he & his family lived in Truckee for several years. I used to love browsing the shops in Truckee when I visited my son. Would enjoy returning someday. Your outfit is chic and comfortable looking! So glad you got to enjoy the day in this fabulous town.

    Merry Christmas!

  6. Dressed in head to toe cashmere! Dies it get any better than that, well yes it does. When you are wearing those darling boots on your feet. Is cashmere warmer than fleece. I flee to my fleece when it gets cold in the 40s.

  7. I know you love all things cashmere. Does it really keep you THAT warm? Your outfit today would just about keep me comfortable with temps in the 60s, definitely not the 40s that you mentioned. Does cashmere make the difference? Or is the fact that I’m in Florida and on blood thinners just make it harder for me to stay warm when the temp falls below 70?

  8. I can live without snow. Rain gets old but you don’t have to shovel it, roads & sidewalks are not slippery, and it’s not freezing out. Snow is pretty though when it’s softly falling.

I’ve been finished shopping and wrapping for two weeks now. It feels good to get it done early, not have to be out in crowded stores and relax coming up to Christmas Eve. In B.C we are to keep to our household bubble. I will miss hosting friends.

I’ve been using Neutrogena for years. I wasn’t aware that it contained a carcinogenic. I know you will have done your homework so which one are you going to be using going forward?

    1. Neutrogena makes very effective sunscreens but some do use questionable ingredients.
      Physical versions are safer.
I really prefer https://shopstyle.it/l/bp30r for face and body. In Canada you have some wonderful non toxic sunscreens with Mexoryl. They’re non-toxic and very stable. Check out La Roche Posay and Avene.

      1. Thank Jennifer! I’ll head over to Shoppers and check out both of those recommendations.

      2. I hate that avobenzone without even knowing it’s cancer connection! It’s in practically every sunscreen unless it’s a mineral based one here in Canada. We have hard well water and it leaves a rusty stain on my clothes. I really get ticked when they add it to previous safe products, I have bought so many that I end up tossing. Must be a cheap ingredient

      3. I would like to use mineral sunscreens but if they are more than 30 proof, it’s white paste. I have haven’t tried the Australia Gold, I’ll get it next.
Cashmere is very warm and so cozy. I’m from Louisiana. I do like fleece but cashmere can’t be beat.

I love all your outfits! You always look so cute! I am looking for a good sunscreen for my face but also for arms and body. What would you recommend? I also have been dealing with skin cancer and just had surgery for a melanoma on my neck so am really interested in the products you use.

    1. I’m sorry you’re dealing with that too!! I prefer physical sunscreens because ruy seem best for sensitive skin. I love many but am reaching for this one everyday for face and neck

This is my favorite for arms and body but seems a bit too heavy for face and neck. https://shopstyle.it/l/bp30r

  10. Yes I double cleanse with Clinique Take the Day Off balm and cerave hydrating cleanser. I also have had several squamous cell carcinomas from being stupid in my younger days. I wear sunscreen every dat whether going outside or not.
It’s foggy today in Washington State- hope it clears up so we can see the “Christmas Star” tonight!
    What sunscreen do you use?

  11. Heather Wynne says:

Hey there y’all down here in the mid-south we can’t stand the snow and ice no one can drive and the city usually just let’s it melt away on it’s on loved your outfit as l wear something similar most here a nice sweater and a long cardigan will keep you warm enough during the day be safe with love and understanding

  12. April Bruckmann says:

    Hi Jennifer,
You look fabulous in that outfit. Perfect for strolling around Truckee. Question about sunscreen. I had my face refreshed by Erbium laser (ablative skin resurfacing) and I now need to wear sunscreen. Do you use sunscreen in lieu of moisturizer or with moisturizer? I have been putting on sunscreen under moisturizer, but wasn’t sure if that is the correct sequence. Also, what facial sunscreen do you recommend?
    Merry Christmas!
    April

    1. I’m so anxious to know how that worked for your skin!! I always apply my moisturizer first so the healthy ingredients can soak in. Sunscreen can be very occlusive so will interfere with that. I prefer physical sunscreens which are always applied last. This one is terrific and has no added fragrance which often stings https://shopstyle.it/l/bp3YR

      1. April Bruckmann says:

I had it done on 8/21 and it took about 4 months for all of the redness to go away. I’m 63 and all my wrinkles have disappeared, so my skin looks fantastic. I will say that it was a long recovery and a very messy healing process. Timing couldn’t have been better since we’re all stuck at home!

      2. Thank you so much for sharing April. I’ve been so tempted. I have some old acne scaring I would love to try it on. I’ll ask my Dr about it for me.

  13. You look great in your casual comfy outfit. I love the handbag. Was so glad to see you bringing up sunscreen and the nasty ingredients that may still be in some of them. Hope you and your family have a wonderful Christmas.

  14. Perfect outfit for Lake Tahoe. Love going there. We have had some snow here in the northwest but I don’t think we will have any for Christmas. It is really wonderful when it snows on Christmas Eve. Still have groceries to purchase and wrapping to finish. Merry Christmas ⛄🎄

    1. Merry Christmas, Rose🎄🎄

  15. Hi Jennifer. I love your outfit. So chic! I’m impressed with your level of skincare and wonder what sunscreen product you use. I have rosacea, so it can be difficult to find one I can tolerate.

Today is the winter solstice – now we start to gradually creep back into the light!

    1. I have at least 10 that I like but by far my favorites are physical. They are the least irritating for my rosacea. I will do a roundup of the ones I’ve tried and current favorites. This one is head and shoulders above the rest https://shopstyle.it/l/bp3VQ

  16. Paulette Levy says:

Love the idea of your trip to find snow and clean air! Despite the snowstorm and icy roads I’ve been trying to get outside (safety) as much as possible. Even shoveling off my deck to grill and sit in the sun (blue blue sky) . I actually don’t mind winter all that much. The roads are plowed by day 2, so I can get outto parks etc where it’s safe to walk (avoiding our icy streets).
You look so cute! Love the hat! Chic!

    1. Blue skies are so therapeutic!! Happy Monday

  17. You look great in your outfit. I love long sweaters and have a few but they are not wool because I turn red from wool.

    Thank you for your ideas.

  18. Jennifer, I love your wool felt hat! Does the fact that it’s wool bother sensitive skin? I know you have thin hair – does this type of hat give you “hat hair?”

    1. It’s not the least bit itchy plus has a grosgrain inner band which is what touches your head. If your hat is too tight it will absolutely give you hat hair. This is on the looser side. I prefer to buy mine larger and adjust for the perfect fit with these strips which you put under the inner band. https://shopstyle.it/l/bp3Vn
