Life Update – What I Wore and I’m Shopping For

My job has me in more stores than most women, which gives me a unique perspective and, quite often, fashion overload. When I see too much sameness, over and over, it feels frustrating and sometimes annoying. Part of that can be the section or store I’m in. But the ones that seem to stand out most are the styles I’m not fond of. Have you noticed that?

On Sunday, I spent some time in the denim section of my favorite department store and was shocked at the sheer volume of frayed, faded, distressed, and downright, destroyed denim offerings. I know many women wear and love the look which they feel confident in. But unfortunately, it’s not something I wear so I felt overloaded and like a fish out of water. Had it been a fashion I do like to wear, I might have also felt overwhelmed but in a positive way.

If I was presented with rack after rack of this sweater in myriad of colors and subtle style differences, I’d be overloaded, satisfied and gradually bored. Anywho…I moved on to the shoe department which had it’s own challenges.

My life update is that I’m up in Vancouver for a quick visit with Vanessa. I’ll be doing a little Pug sitting of her fragile little dog who has some aging health challenges. I hope to hit more Canadian stores while here and will also get to shop the Canadian Nsale, which I’m excited to see. The offerings are usually quite different.

In other news, I’m an Amazon Prime member and Prime Days are here. I don’t usually buy too much during this sale because I do enough damage without the incentive :). However… I will be stocking up on some of my favorite beauty deals which are seriously marked down today.

My new eye doctor tells me it’s ok to go back to using this Grandlash so I’m all in because this stuff is amazing!! My lashes got so long they hit the lenses of my sunglasses!
I ordered 3 of these Revitabrow because it grew back all my brows and 30% off is nothing to snooze on.
This WOW spray is really amazing. It’s the only one I use because it’s not oily, greasy, and doesn’t weigh down my hair…just makes it sparkle!
People are so obsessed with this Lip Sleeping Mask, I decided I’d give it a try.
This Apple watch is $120 off. I wasn’t in the market for a watch, don’t need a watch, but everyone I know who has one loves it so it’s in my cart and I’m thinking about it.

I am off for a walk around the Sea Wall to soak up some fresh air.

Make it a good one ladies and remember to wear what makes you feel confident, no matter what other people say or do. If you love distressed jeans, rock them with a smile!

  1. I would be interested in hearing about what shopping you find good here in Vancouver. I live in the lowermainland and personally I think shopping here is dismal. Hudson’s Bay is going downhill, Holt Renfrew is out of my price range and Nordstrom’s is ok – wishing it would stock the same things that a US Nordstrom’s would. Some small speciality boutiques carry things I like, but I’ve taken to sewing my own clothes when I have the time.

    1. I do find the shopping here is very limited compared to what we have in the US. Nordstrom and Talbots seem to have the best options.

  2. Hi Jennifer! Welcome back to “this side”!
I hear you on sameness, especially of trends I dislike. I swear, if someone took a risk to be original it would sell. Especially styles and colours flattering to a women’s shape and preferences. I can’t be the only one who is dying for something different. Anyway, enjoy your time in Vancouver and if you see any Canadian sites/stores of interest, let us know.

  3. I used to love shopping and could spend hours in the stores. Now I find that the big stores (Macy’s) overwhelm me. There is just too much stuff crammed together and a lot of it looks junky. Don’t even mention how trashy the fitting rooms look. If I know exactly what I want (certain brands of underwear or make-up), I just get it and get out. I prefer smaller stores like J Jill. But honestly, I am retired and just don’t need as many clothes as I did when I was younger/working.

  4. Recently became a follower of your blog and I am enjoying all the info. Your daughter is beautiful and the 2 of you look so much alike. Thank you for sharing your perspective on style.

    1. Welcome, Pam. Thank you. Sheā€™s a very special lady.

  5. I have tried Revitabrow but have not noticed any improvement. Hasnā€™t gotten better, but hasnā€™t gotten worse either. So of course, I will not be buying it again. Iā€™m not complaining, just stating that as with most things, just because it works for one person doesnā€™t mean it will work for everyone.

    1. Thanks for sharing your experience, Nancy. I’m sorry it didn’t help your eyebrows.

I feel as you do in stores- lots of ā€œstuffā€ I donā€™t wear. Everything on repeat. (Sigh).
    Enjoy your time in Vancouver!

  7. Nice post Jennifer, enjoy your visit! I LOVE the light blue frames of your glasses in the second photo. Do you recall where you got them? Many thanks!

    1. They are by a brand called Aspire. I got them at a local optometrist. If you google them, the brand lists who carries them.

      1. Thanks so much for your reply, Iā€™ll check it out!

  8. Iā€™ve switched my view a bit on styles that donā€™t work for me. Now I tell myself, ā€œYay! Something I wonā€™t be tempted to buy!ā€ šŸ˜†
Love the Apple Watch! It comes in a beautiful blue Iā€™m very tempted by. I would probably get it, except I bought a FitBit in February on a really good deal at Costco. Maybe I could pass it on to someone. šŸ¤”

Love my Apple watch, didnā€™t think I needed it but love having all the info about my activity. Many thanks!

    2. That’s a great way to look at styles you don’t like!

I guess I’m on overload and have tuned out a bit lately. Same old plain long sleeve top/sweater (have plenty) too many gathered oversized flared or baggy whatevers, and enough distressed jeans already in my closet (they just get moreso) I only wear them for super casual anyway. Yes, I like classics and stick mainly to that, but nothing seems very “new” or interesting lately. Gonna take a break, and maybe in a month or so I can find a cardigan sweater in classic ivory that is well, classic, no drop sleeves, yes pockets, not so long I catch it on things, and no weird patchwork or holey thing going on, just soft and comfy like maybe coastal grandmother style? Maybe they should ask us what we want when they make the clothes? Just dreaming…..

    1. Well said! I so agree.

    2. I do understand your dreams.

  10. Your hair is looking great and when you smile, your whole face lights up! Enjoy your blog.

    1. Thank you, Sue. My daughter makes my face light up

  11. I have never understood distressed denim and would not wear it even if it was a gift. Nor do I care for puffed sleeves and tiered skirts. To each her own.

  12. Your hair’s looking great these days, Jennifer!

    1. Thank you, it must be the great water here.

Hi Jennifer, Hope you enjoy your visit in Canada. I’m so happy to hear that “distressed denim” is NOT on your list of go to when shopping for jeans or other denim! I’m 67y/o and while I try to dress attractively, I don’t shop what’s in style, but what feels comfortable for me. I love your style and enjoy your daily tips, though I can’t afford to shop where you do. But, it’s nice dream!

    1. We all need to wear what makes up happy and confident!

  14. Denise Walker says:

Love your longer hair. Get the watch!

    1. LOL, see? Everyone loves them

  15. Elizabeth L says:

Typo under the first photo of you in the blue sweater & jeans that you might want to edit! Always tricky when writing the word ā€œpublicā€ (or in this case ā€œRepublicā€).
I enjoy your blog as a fellow petite. I too hate distressed denim as well as flounces, tiers, and cut out shoulders, slogans and Capri pants that end at mid calf.

  16. What a great photo! You look wonderful!

    1. Thank you so much. My daughter always takes my best photos

  17. I am curious about Revitabrow. Once you use it, and your brows grow back, do you have to keep using it to keep the brows? If you stop using it, do they disappear again? Thanks!

    1. Yes, I do. Now I just use it a few times a week and my tube lasts much longer than they say it should.

  18. I guess our nice warm temps feel cool to you after the California heat. I noticed Vanessa is in a tank top while you have on a long sleeve sweater and jeans. Iā€™m in cropped pants and a tee. Just notingā€¦..
Iā€™m thinking of trying the Revitabrow. Obviously it works because you are recommending it. Is that on the Canadian site?

    1. Same! No more puffy sleeves and tiered prairie dresses please! Trying to find a dress age appropriate (60ā€™s) suitable for a fall wedding is a challenge!

      1. Elizabeth S says:

Absolutely! My friend and I were thinking Little House on the Prairie when we saw the spring offerings!

    2. LOL, It feels chilly to me compared to our blistering temps at home šŸ™‚

  19. Elizabeth S says:

I, too, am distressed by distressed denim. The other thing that I find unappealing is embellished denim. Bling on back pockets. To me it screams discount store.
