Look of the Week: Linen and Down
Happy Monday and hallelujah, I have found some internet! This post was supposed to go out earlier but #campingissues. Wifi is a struggle where we are staying so I plan to hit the library more often to catch up. With much of the country struggling under a brutal heatwave, I’m not about to complain about the cool temperatures here. My weather app keeps me pretty aware of what to expect but things change fast here so you have to be prepared and carry reinforcements.
Since I under packed for cool weather, I am sick to death of the few options I have to wear. I’ve combined them multiple ways but yesterday’s was the weirdest.
We were heading down to watch the Dragon Boat races in Nanaimo and I knew it would be colder there than where we are camped, at the beach.
I wore jeans, a linen shirt, sandals, silk scarf and topped it with a down vest.
We wandered the dock and yes, had another lunch of fish & chips. I’m not counting how many times I’ve had this, I am on vacation mode;)
I never tire of watching seaplanes take off and land. This harbor has quite a few of them because they are a quick and fun way to get to the mainland.
Once the sun came out I shed the vest and added a straw hat. I came away without a straw handbag and am doing just fine carrying the same purse I carried this spring. It’s gray color coordinates with most everything…including the sky:)
This Dungeness crab statue was carved by chainsaw and sits in Maffeo Sutton park close to where the races were held. The park was full of tourists and locals, all partying, snacking and cheering on the rowers. I’d never seen a dragon boat race so it was fun.
Sunsets are epic here and not to be missed so we poured a glass of wine and wandered to the shore to watch the light show. The vest was just enough to take the chill off as the sun went down and the breeze off the water picked up.
Linen, silk, and down is an unusual combination but it worked perfectly for yesterdays weather. The forecast is for sun and warmer temperatures which I do have the clothes for!

We wear down over everything here in Maine, even over the dressiest clothes. The vests are easy to stuff in a bag and pull out when the sea breezes start. Your look not only isn’t strange, it’s attractive and practical. Dark navy and white are the best color choices for down vests.
So sorry about the weather. We think it’s a bit bizarre also. Normally, as you know it’s hot and dry. Thank goodness we don’t have to worry too much about forest fires yet. My garden is very happy.
When you return to the mainland by ferry, wave at SaltSpring island; I will wave back. I hope you get to meet up with Leslie.

Really, I live in the north end of the island. Ganges is a ten minute drive….maybe this could work.
If you were thinking of the Saturday market, that would be fun. The ferry from Croften has been running late, almost one ferry wait. Saltspring has become even more popular lately.

I absolutely love your outfit: linen shirt, pink scarf and vest plus sandals…My kind of style…Oh how I wish I could wear my little green Barbour vest…But let me tell you we are in the throes of a heat situation…Wearing anything more than shorts and a tank top is too much…..Which is not fair since January is below 20 and freezing…smile…

Puffer jackets and vests are good any time of the year.
I’m finding that puffers are multi seasonable! This is the only one I have but now I want another.
I love the vest I got at j.jill last year! It was fairly thin but longer than the average vest so covered the longer length that many of my tops are now (and more of my tush!).
Your outfit looks very Pacific Northwest, which means perfect for the weather and charming at the same time. And isn’t Nanaimo a great town? Have fun camping!

I love linen clothes – such a s shame that they don’t travel well – they crease at the best of times but put them in a suitcase and it’s even worse! Your down jacket cover up nicely though!
Linen travels beautifully when I don’t expect more from it than it can give :). I’ve come to terms with its wrinkles and embraced its texture.
Welcome to the Pacific Northwest. Our mornings seem to be overcast with clearing in the afternoon. We haven’t had much rain but it’s very hard to dress in the morning. I have seen neighbours wearing fleece. I do like the pink sandals.
I could have worn a fleece today! It’s equal opportunity weather;)

I love vest! I think I have every color. They are perfect to dress up or down for a day excursion especially, if you get the ones with the zipped pockets….no purse to carry.
