Mannequin Madness

Mannequin Madness

Happy Wednesday ladies. It’s time for our mid-week mannequin madness (would you wear it :)… so grab another cup of your favorite beverage and let’s get to it. If you’re new here, each week my friend Pam and I share a mannequin we’ve found and ask our readers if they would wear what it’s modeling. We do this to better understand your fashion goals and to have a fun give and take in the comment section.

I love to have you share how you could style the outfit to work for your body shape and lifestyle.

I snapped this mannequin several weeks ago before California got locked down again.

So what do you think?

Would you wear this look?

Do the colors work for you?

Please keep your comments personal to you because other women will love what you hate and we are  not here to insult anyone’s taste.

Here’s what popular on AWSL this week-

over 50 fashion blogger Jennifer Connolly wearing striped linen pants and silk ruana

These super comfy linen pants are winning by a country mile. Does anyone use that expression these days…I’m dating myself here. In fact, if they had this pant in other color stripes, I’d be buying them too! They are half off and I don’t know about where you live, but we still have lots of hot weeks and months ahead of us.

This silk watercolor ruana is running a close second, as is this pretty Tencel shirt.fashion blogger Jennifer Connolly wearing Dean Davidson Origami earrings

Several of you were curious about the lipstick I’m wearing above. It’s actually just this Always Sharp Lip Pencil in the color “Stylist”. These lip pencils get bizarre reviews online because ladies don’t know how to extend the pencil. To make the color portion longer, you screw the cap back on then continue twisting it closed twice, while it makes a click sound, then unscrew and it’s perfectly sharp! This is my 4th one and I love them!

Now let’s go over to see what Pam’s mannequin is wearing on Over 50 Feeling 40.

This outfit grabs my attention and I would definitely want to try it on. I love everything about the pants except the bow. I’d like to play around with that and see if there are other ways to tie it. I also like the colour combination, but I can’t tell for sure if the sleeveless blazer/vest is a white white or winter white/cream. Pure white doesn’t look good on me.

I like all the colors but wouldn’t wear anything from this outfit. I need to wear fitted pants and I rarely wear anything sleeveless, especially two at once!

I have a collection of different vests And I’ve always loved them as the third piece. I have sometimes worn them with a sleeveless tops even though my arms have never been my best feature. I love the look of the paper bag waist pants but I’m afraid the only time I’ve ever tried a pair on I couldn’t get them off fast enough – they make me look rounder and I don’t need help with that! I do like the color combination though. I loved your Ruana this week too, I have several of them and your post has persuaded me to add another light color one. They are so great on hot days to add some interest to our wardrobes aren’t they? thanks for the suggestion.

I love each of the colors but wouldn’t wear the 3 of them together. I’m also a no on sleeveless…my arms aren’t sculpted and lymphadema is a problem for my left arm since my second lumpectomy. I love vests although it’s a little hot right now for an additional layer.

    July 29, 2020 / 2:53 pm

The colors, length, V-neck are choices I like and I generally like 3 piece outfits but would change the paperbag waist pants for a more classic waistband (don’t think this would be flattering and also think it’s most likely a fad) and rarely wear sleeveless so I would prefer the short under the vest to have sleeves or the vest have a short or rolled-up sleeve

Great outfit, and I’d try the paper bag look as some of you have . You never know until you try it on!
Thanks again for the reminders to shop our closets or try something new.

Yes, I would wear this outfit. I don’t usually wear two sleeveless tops together, but I did like the look.

    July 29, 2020 / 11:00 am

As have similar to the top already (but in a deeper hue) I guess it would be a yes. As to the other two pieces I’m afraid I would prefer something similar but not as shown as would prefer a long sleeve in the tunic vest and less fullness in the waistband of the pants plus without a fabric tie belt.
P.S.: Do love the area carpet underneath the display as feel it would go with numerous decors.

      July 29, 2020 / 1:35 pm

Well, her arms are naked and my arms are never naked! I love the color of the pants and I’ve worn (and liked) paper bag waist years ago — maybe the ’90s? For me, the 3rd color would be black.

  9. Kay
    July 29, 2020 / 10:59 am

I like it. I wear vests a lot. It’s a good third layer with sleeveless in the summer. I like the pants, but I would probably ditch the tie. The colors are good, but I would probably go with something more gold or red with the top.

    July 29, 2020 / 10:56 am

I like this outfit, but it seems a little blah. I think it needs a scarf or jewelry to really make it a winner.
I’ve never been a fan of paper bag pants for me, thinking as many do, that it would put too much emphasis on my tummy. This year I found a pair in a color I just fell in love with, so decided to give them a try. Then they sat in my closet. Last week I took the plunge and figured I wouldn’t be leaving the house anyway. Well, I love them! They are so comfortable! I bought a size larger so they would have more of the baggy look. I’ve worn them everyday and have been having fun styling them.

I have the watercolor kimono from Chico’s and have been wearing it all summer styled various ways!

  12. Donna
    July 29, 2020 / 10:07 am

I’m not a fan of sleeveless blazers nor paper bag waisted pants. So both of those would be a hard no.
I like the colour of the tank and the v neck line so I would give that a try.
For some reason I have a very hard time with the 3 colour combo. I prefer two pieces to match and one to be a different colour. Not that I think it looks bad I just am not comfortable wearing three different colours. I’m weird I know.

    • Mary Ann
      July 29, 2020 / 10:45 am

You know, Donna, I thought the same thing about the three colors. Maybe I need to think outside the box and try it! Just not sleeveless.

      • Julie Traxler
        July 31, 2020 / 1:06 pm

I also thought the same thing! Fashion is changing from the tried and true of the past. A red blouse would seem more natural. I used to have the paper bag style when I was 20 pounds lighter….no go anymore. I like the white sleeveless jacket, but it appears too dressy for our rural area. Darn, maybe I need to think more “out of the box”!

  13. Eve
    July 29, 2020 / 10:00 am

I know I wouldn’t wear the vest because I have one and never wear it because it doesn’t layer over my shirts. I prefer a collarless vest. I do like the colors. My monitor is sometimes off on color. This looks sage to me and teal instead of Aqua. I love your ruana.

  14. Nancy Walden
    July 29, 2020 / 8:49 am

This outfit is a no for me! The lines of the vest and paper-bag waist pants would not flatter my shape. I can’t tell if the top is spaghetti-strapped or sleeveless. If it’s sleeveless and came in a jewel tone, I’d at least try it on.

    July 29, 2020 / 8:47 am

I would wear the blouse & trousers. The lovely teal blue would be be nice with my grey hair. Although I would prefer a blouse with a bit of a sleeve. I have never had much luck with long vest.

  16. Marian
    July 29, 2020 / 8:12 am

Very Annie Hall (dating myself too!). I would have worn it 30lbs ago. I’d try to find slim jeans the same color to wear this now.

This mannequin would inspire me to try an outfit I would never have thought of myself. The color combination is lovely and really different. I never wear white anymore but in a sleeveless piece, it’s summery fresh and works. And it’s a tailored vest…flattering. Interesting lines and lapels.

Espadrilles, a straw bag and straw fedora would finish the look. Or a cute sneaker and little backpack.

  17. Pamela Over 50 Feeling 40
    July 29, 2020 / 7:21 am

I love the colors here! But the only piece I would actually wear is the tank under a cardigan or light jacket! The vest is too long and the paper bag pants would add the look of additional weight…not a flattering fit!

I love drawstring waist pants like yours in the summer, and I have a pear shape. My secret is to go up a size. This way, the smaller waist contrasts nicely with the fullness of the pants. I wear a T-shirt tucked in, or a tie-waist shirt. Nice and cool.

Today’s mannequin is wearing a look I like. Nice color combination, too.

    • Jennifer
      July 29, 2020 / 7:27 am

That’s a great tip about going up a size to get the right proportion. Women always seem to want to size down but it doesn’t always get you the look you want.

  19. Candy Langert
    July 29, 2020 / 6:42 am

I like the color combination of aqua and olive. Talbots has a few items combined this way and it looks very fresh. For me, these pants would highlight an area of my body that I’m trying to minimize so I wouldn’t purchase this style of pants. I find sleeveless vests/jackets useless to me.

  20. Shari
    July 29, 2020 / 6:40 am

Love the outfit! I really like the color of the silk shirt! This accent color was with My “going away” outfit with a brown suit and THIS color lizard shoes and purse 50+ years ago…now who’s doing myself!?

I’ve been wanting some grey-green pants and I like crops a lot so I’ll consider these!

I agree that the vest is toooo hot for us in the south. But…wouldn’t it look great in spring over navy pants or slim skirt!?

    • Jennifer
      July 29, 2020 / 7:28 am

I love your styling ideas. Going away outfits were “it” in my day too;)

  21. Catherine
    July 29, 2020 / 6:39 am

Yes to the top half and no for the bottom half. I have tried the paper bag waist and it does nothing good for my generous hips. It would be great on someone who is an inverted triangle! I like all the colours but not together. My personal hang up with what will go with olive!

  22. cindy
    July 29, 2020 / 6:39 am

Love the color of the pants but because I have a small waist and large behind, that style is not flattering on me at all!

  23. Kathy
    July 29, 2020 / 6:12 am

Love the pants and camisole. I would wear both! Don’t like the sleeveless vest — just a hot layer for Florida heat.

  24. Debbie Monroe
    July 29, 2020 / 6:10 am

I would wear the outfit for sure. I would wear the long vest with a lot of other combos.

    • Jennifer
      July 29, 2020 / 7:29 am

      I love long vests too!

  25. Betsy
    July 29, 2020 / 6:09 am

I love it on the mannequin! Love the colors! Turquoise jewelry would be pretty.

  26. Deb
    July 29, 2020 / 6:08 am

Love the outfit and color combination. Only change I would make is have the shirt be 3/4 sleeve since arms aren’t my best feature !

    • Jennifer
      July 29, 2020 / 7:30 am

      I like that idea too!

  27. Cyndi
    July 29, 2020 / 6:01 am

I love this color combination – unusual – although I probably would never wear turquoise. The pants are a no – they’re cute for someone taller, but too much for short me. I love the sleeveless vest jacket. Very cute & id wear it. I could see it working with many pieces in my wardrobe.

  28. sheryl beil
    July 29, 2020 / 5:49 am

the pants are a loud no, thats accenting my worse section. but i would try on the sleeveless blazer thingy…thats unique. the color of the blouse under is pretty, but i would have to see the entire piece to know if its for me or not.

  29. Ann M
    July 29, 2020 / 5:47 am

I like the look of the pants… coincidentally just ordered a pair of crops with a belt yesterday and am hoping they’ll be nice. Have bookmarked these and also the lip liner… it looks great on you! Do you fill in your lips with it completely and wear it instead of lipstick? Btw, I checked on the number of the Maybelline Superstay liquid lipstick I mentioned recently that I’ve loved for years. It’s 245, Firmly Mauve… you and I are very similar coloring so you might like it.

    • Jennifer
      July 29, 2020 / 7:31 am

Thanks! I fill in a little bit then smoosh my lips together which fills in the rest.

        I will try it, thanks!

I love the outfit the mannequin was wearing! Loved the color combo!

  31. MP
    July 29, 2020 / 5:34 am

Looks like someone got dressed in the dark with the clothes they brought on the RV trip. Nothing here appeals to me especially those pants. All the gathers look like you’re hiding something. The colors don’t go together.

    • Jennifer
      July 29, 2020 / 7:32 am

Pape bag waists can be really flattering when worn with the right proportions.

  32. Pam
    July 29, 2020 / 5:28 am

I love the look of the high waisted and bow belted pants but alas I have too much middle for the style to work for me. Yes to the colors and the sleeveless vest over sleeveless shirt.

  33. Paulette Levy
    July 29, 2020 / 5:23 am

For some reason I don’t like thus outfit. The style of pant looks off to me, like it might be baggy at the tummy? I love teal with white but do not like thus vest at all. I’d walk by this outfit as displayed.

  34. Bev Dickes
    July 29, 2020 / 5:20 am

I love the colors and the look. I have three pair of those city pants from Athlete. I wear them daily with my athletic shoes for work. I tie a bow in the front and angle it so the loops point up and down. I’ve never worn a vest over my tops with them. I’ll try adding that layer come fall.

    • Jennifer
      July 29, 2020 / 7:33 am

      Thanks for sharing Bev

  35. Jan
    July 29, 2020 / 5:18 am

Even on this tall, pencil thin mannequin, this style mix does not appeal to me. Pair a cocoon vest with those hugely gathered pants and that large draw string bow and it’s a no way for me. The colors are ok but I don’t do sleeveless and I prefer garments that skim over my mid section.
Contrast the feature display with your ruana/linen pants outfit and I can see how to successfully style these summer pieces. I did order two of the double v tanks that you wore with the ruana. I love them! Thanks for all your very practical advice!

  36. Theresa
    July 29, 2020 / 5:11 am

I would wear the look if the top had sleeves. The look That I think is perfect is your linen pants, white tee and silk watercolor ruana!

  37. Lidia
    July 29, 2020 / 5:06 am

That overall look is so me! But I would probably choose a more neutral color top to go under the vest. I love the pants and have a few in that style but I don’t like the look of a “bow” – it looks bulky…any suggestions for a more refined ‘tie”?

  38. Francesca B.
    July 29, 2020 / 4:53 am

I really like the gathered olive pants and I would try them on. Love the color and the slim fit and I ould wear them with sandals. Not so keen on the two tops; I don’t like the shine on the tee or the color, it looks like snake print which is not me and the white waistcoat is too stylised for me and I don’t like the curved edge. Someone tall could rock this. Hope your are loving the lake!

  39. Susan Kelley
    July 29, 2020 / 4:42 am

  40. Linda
    July 29, 2020 / 4:40 am

I would not wear the vest. It would sit in my closet I’m afraid.

  41. Diane
    July 29, 2020 / 4:20 am

I absolutely love the mannequin with the black accessories and would definitely rock that look…
the Outfit not so much although taking each piece separately could work to make workable outfits…

  42. Lezlie Davis
    July 29, 2020 / 4:14 am

I would definitely wear the vest! I really like a classic vest and the crisp white is something I could pair with anything. The rest (sleeveless top and pants) are a no go for me. I prefer vests with a sleeve. The color scheme is off for me. I look best in deep jewel tones … I would probably do candy apple red with the vest or a royal blue with it.
