Sci-Art Personal Color Analysis

Happy Monday ladies. I’m musing about color today and the myriad ways it affects how we look.

Color Podcast

SEVERAL OF THE COLOR FANS I’VE BEEN GIVEN OVER THE YEARS

My color draping last month with the Sci\ART color analyst and trainer, Terry Wildfong, was nothing short of eye-opening. I sat in a neutral gray room, wearing a neutral gray robe and head covering. Everyone in the room wore a neutral gray robe because color reacts to the colors around it. There were multiple full-spectrum lamps for true light and I faced a mirror.

I ALSO PURCHASED THE CORPORATE PALLETE WHICH INCLUDES MORE NEUTRALS

I watched as colors were draped across my shoulders that made my face drain of color or my eyes go glassy. I saw warm colors make my complexion turn sallow. I saw the colors that made it appear I was wearing lipstick and saw what harmonized with me.

Terry explained that, sure, she could make my red blotches fade, but when they did, they came at a price. The fact is, I do have red blotches on my face, and colors that make them fade, also drain other colors from my face and turn the outside of my eyebrows orange. The goal of color analysis is to show you which colors look best on you because they harmonize with you…they should not change you.

You might enjoy my discussion with Christine Scanman and Jourunn Hernes on their color podcast last week. You can listen here. These gals are so talented, I think you’ll enjoy the podcast. I tune in every month.

A Note-

You will continue to see me style many colors that don’t flatter me because I style clothes for you, not me. This is not a diary of what Jennifer wears…although I do share that too šŸ™‚ My blog is a service for you, no matter what season you are or what colors you like to wear.

Thanks for reading, and be sure to wear what makes you feel confident.

  1. Jennifer thank you for talking about WKC, I had not heard of them but will check into to them now.

Yes I use Laura Gellar for several years now and love the line. My favorite is the Quench & Tint, light but can be built up for more coverage. I had my colors done years ago but need to revisit it so thank you for the reminder.

I enjoyed todayā€™s post for numerous reasons, but most importantly – the last line – ā€œhug those you loveā€. Having lost my husband recently, I know we never hugged enough. I hope your readers will take those words as good advice.

  3. Jan Correll says:

I need to check out the Laura Geller productsā€¦ you look beautiful! Thanks for the introduction!

  4. Your description of the setting for doing your colors made me stop and think. The colors tried there either did or did not flatter you, but the world is not a plain grey room with controlled lighting. I don’t know if I would be confident that a particular color would work (or not) out in the real world with bright sunshine, soft candlelight, twilight sunset, florescent doctor’s office overhead lighting, etc.

    1. The purpose of the neutral background (we used soft white when I did Colours back in the 80’s) is so that the client can see how the colour drapes react to the complexion without possibly getting distracted by other colours in the room. The full spectrum lighting is the most natural man made lighting to daylight and provides consistency throughout the consultation. If you used just natural daylight, some days would be cloudy and you wouldn’t see the results as easily. The colours that are best on you in that environment, will be the best in all lighting, even yellow fluorescent lighting. Hair is covered if it has been dyed, and we tried to show as much natural root if possible.

      1. Thanks for explaining the process better than I did. The eye gets distracted so easily without these safeguards.

    2. The point is that itā€™s a true test of your skin against colors. If they look flattering in a neutral environment they will look good in all environments.

  5. So glad you shared about World Central Kitchen! They do wonderful work & thatā€™s also who I donated to regarding the situation in Ukraine. Itā€™s heartbreaking.

  6. Thank you (and Annie) for mentioning World Central Kitchen. My husband and I had the privilege of helping assemble and deliver meals for WCK during the Thomas Fire in 2017 (then the largest fire in CA history, since sadly surpassed several times over). Chef Andrea visited the local school where the food was being prepared and assembled. This humble, generous man was greeted like visiting royalty. I was not surprised to learn that WCK is already hard at work helping Ukrainians.

I can’t see the images of small, frightened children taking shelter in a subway or making their way to the border without imagining my 4-year-old granddaughter in the same situation. How do they ever trust again that adults are wise or that the world is a caring place? It’s gut-wrenching.

  7. Love your color palette and the description of how they arrived at your colors. I laughed a little because the palettes look like paint chips! I’ve never seen someone’s colors in that format. It’s wonderful because you have the variations of the different shades. My palette is very similar, so I look forward to you modeling and writing about colors you wear.
I have tried Laura Gellar make-up and do like it; however, the baked foundations are not enough coverage for my age and red spots. I like a liquid better; applied with a brush. My favorites are Arbonne & IT cosmetics. I like Laura Gellar’s stick eyeshadows a lot. They are creamy and apply very easily.
That charity is something to look into. Fun post!

  8. Jennifer, This was my comment to Pam Latrell after she introduced me to Laura Geller. ā€œAbsolutely love this makeup. Thank you for introducing me to this brand. Their customer service is fantastic. The foundation color I picked was too yellow. I called to say I might have to exchange for another color. I was told to keep the one I have and they would send me a replacement. (After an extended conversation about which shade to chose she added, ā€œyou can try mixing the two colors.ā€ WOW!) NONE of this make up settles in my creases/wrinkles, ever. And the powdered foundation is not drying. Oh my, can you tell I am a fan? Iā€™ve also now ordered some fun bits, eye shadow, liner etc.ā€
PS: Still love this make up. I did buy the shadow pallet and love it, however, not a fan of the eyeliner. It clumps like mascara not at all like the quality of the other make-up products.
World Central Kitchen is my favorite charity. Thanks for the shoutout to them.

    1. That’s so good to know, thanks Suzi!

  9. Cynthia Powers says:

I really like the makeup. I haven’t used it, but it looks great on you so I may try it

  10. I’ve been wearing the Laura Geller baked foundation for a few months now. I like it better than I thought I would. I use a small brush to apply like a concealer on a few red spots, then use the Kabuki brush all over. It appears to be a light coverage, but very natural looking. Plus, it lasts all day and doesn’t come off on my mask! I have very dry skin and it doesn’t settle into lines or itch, which most make up does. Hope that’s helpful.

    1. Thanks for sharing your experience with it Susan.

  11. Thank you, Jennifer for mentioning WCK. It’s a great organization. I cry in front of the TV thinking, what if this was my daughter not knowing where her next meal is coming from? What if this was my son having to fight an invasion in the streets of Seattle? There is nothing political here, only deep, sadness.
Spackle did make me laugh: my husband has been using a ton of spackle to fill in the cracks on our daughter’s living room walls.

    1. My husband calls my makeup putty and paint…spackle is a better description

  12. Love Spackle by Laura Geller. Great product.

  13. Laura Geller also makes a great eyebrow pencil/fixative that comes in gray. They are hard to find.

  14. I like when you model all types of clothes, so I can see how it will look on me as a petite mature woman. Thank you

I can’t do dry types of foundation, as it seems to bring out my wrinkles. I need to find a liquid foundation that looks luminous, but does not break me out. The breaking out is something new with me. Any good clean ones that you know of?

    1. Jane Iredale and Ilia are my current favorite clean makeup lines.

    2. Have your dermatologist have a peek and be sure your breakouts are not rosacea. I developed it about 5 years ago and it presents as blemishes

  15. Loved this post, Jennifer. I am at a point in my life that I am looking for new makeup. Something that will enhance my years, rather than take away, I have never used Laura Gellar, but will take a serious look now. I, for myself, appreciate the omitting of sex, politics, etc. we get enough of that every day. I so enjoy reading your posts and considering what in my closet really works for me. Have a wonderful day.

    1. Happy Monday šŸ™‚

  16. Happy Monday Jennifer! I ordered the Laura Geller Original Clear Spackle and the Baked Balance n Brighten Foundation. I adore the Spackle (I’m on my second tube) as it makes a wonderful base for my makeup. It took me two tries to find the best color match in the foundation (I went too dark the first try) but now prefer to use it as a setting powder by tapping it on over Clinique’s Moisture Surge CC Cream (which gives me a dewy look whereas I found the baked foundation felt drying). My first Laura Geller order came with a free mascara. I love it and will buy it when my freebie is gone. Thank you for always being so uplifting in your posts!

    1. Happy Monday, Janet!

  17. Ellie Bonner says:

That Laura Gellar makeup looks terrific on you! Which shade are you wearing?

    1. I am wearing the “Fair”

  18. Thank you for recommending World Central Kitchen. I was looking for an organization to support that was providing aid to Ukraineā€¦

  19. Did you feel the foundation powder settled into the fine lines? That has been my experience with powder foundations in the past. Intriguing product line and love the ease of it.

    1. I did not. I don’t wear powder foundation for the same reason plus I have dry skin

  20. Prayers for Ukraine and peace in our world that we all may co-exist in love.
You looked great after you added your touch of make-up.
    Colors are a bit tricky.
I notice different colors go with my mood. Some days blacks and beige look awesome other days aqua and off white look wonderful and it does have to do with my mood.

  21. WCK is such a wonderful organization! So happy you mentioned it. And thanks for the heads up on Laura Geller. I ordered the kitā€¦we shall see!šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

  22. Carol Eberhardt says:

Thank you for the info on Charity Navigator. Chef Jose Andrea is amazing, the catalyst for World Central Kitchen. Iā€™ve seen him on Colbertā€™s Late Show a few times, between our planetā€™s many disasters; he seems like a genuine saint on earth. He could be running around like Bobby Flay and the Diners and Dives guy, making millions for himself, but he is always out there either in the trenches mobilizing, or informing people like me of the work WCK does. Feeding all the first responders in NYC during the worst of the pandemic was one epic move. I have nothing but respect for the organization.

God protect the children of Ukraine.

  23. Ellen Forbus says:

Oops! Forgot a comment/question about the color match: You say your hair was in a towel. Don’t they also want to consider the color of your hair and how it flows with the colors?

    1. I thought the same thing Ellen….maybe they don’t consider hair in the evaluation because so many women colour their hair but it still has an effect on how things look. The other question I have is why the heck is everything GREY…..grey is the one colour I look horrible in…..with the whole room, robes, hair towel being grey I would doubt that any other colour had a chance of looking good on me.

      1. They use neutral gray because it doesn’t affect how your complexion reacts to the other colors.

    2. It was a gray hair wrap. No, they just look at the skin. So many women dye their hair it throws the analysis off. If they get it right for the skin, it will be right for your hair and eyes, assuming you have not dyed your hair in the wrong tone.

  24. Ellen Forbus says:

Thank you for the info on charity navigator. I’ve read about some charities that will help pets in the Ukraine and want to check them out before donating. Such a sad state of affairs.

  25. Paulette Levy says:

Happy Monday Jennifer! Iā€™ve so rarely (like never!) witnessed you wearing anything that drains you or looks bad on you! I think youā€™re a rarity- a woman who can successfully wear almost any color family. Can that be true?
(I guess you wear cool colors most successfully? )

    1. The color changes in my complexion were subtle for some and dramatic for others. I do seem to be able to “pass” in lots of colors but cool is most flattering
