Monday Musings- Cycling In My New Tuxedo Blazer
Happy Monday, ladies. Our weekend drive didn’t get us as far as snow country, but we got a nice change of scenery in Gold country, and here’s what I wore.
I decided that rather than let my new velvet blazer wait for my next dressy occasion, I’d dress it down with a cashmere sweater and a pair of jeans. I find the longer I wait to cycle a new piece into my wardrobe, the less wear it gets. It resembles a tuxedo jacket because the buttons look satiny.
We stopped to stock up on our favorite organic mandarins, which are now going in my morning smoothies.
In this picture, you can see that the blazer is deep green with satin buttons. I skipped a necklace since I knew my scarf would end up wrapped around my neck. I’ve had this J. Crew plaid scarf for several years and bring it out every fall. I was surprised to find a new one with tags here. eBay is really pretty cool that way. My Elizabeth and James bag is several years old. I don’t think this brand exists anymore, but here is a similar oneĀ without the weaving.Ā The pin is from J. Jill last year.
MORE VELVET BLAZERS
The following day we went to Nevada City. A different cashmere sweater, another hat, and another pair of flat boots. We did our best to support the economy and were very happy to see lots of tourists have returned, so the shops seem to be thriving once again.
I bookended my outfit with shades of beige. My boots are several years old, as is my scarf. I like that these J. Crew faux leather pants have straight legs that aren’t too slim. My beige, tan, and black shoulder bag is perfect with so many things, I’m using it year-round.
I wore this outfit last Sunday in San Francisco. I don’t think I shared it with you, but if I did, it’s worth repeating. My booties are amazingly comfy. They’re water resistant in sizes 5-12, 4A, 2A, B, D, and EE. The scarf is a treasure from an outlet mall many years ago. The sweater (on sale) is on constant repeat this fall, as are the white shirt and black jeans. My handbag looks bright red, but it’s actually burgundy.
I’m looking forward to getting all the way to the snow later this week and will be sure to capture my outfits.

Funny, I just pulled out my satin print black velvet tunic I purchased at Chicos a million years ago. I paired it with just as old Chicos stirrup pants and ancient flat black boots. A newer silver and black patent purse coupled with a new Chicos silver medallion necklace and silver earrings completed the look. It was just a simple lunch but it made me feel great. About 10 years ago the tunic was too big for me but I couldnāt part with itā¦as my weight fluctuates Iām so glad I kept it.

I bought the teal velvet blazer from Loft. Loving it! I have worn it with straight leg black jeans and a lightweight sweater. Tomorrow I am pairing it with bootcut blue jeans and a silk shirt. It also goes with a peasant/boho dress and with a bias cut skirt purchased long before the jacket. In the cooler/cold weather, velvet is very versatile. However, the cut is everything.

So when I read the headline, “cycling in my new tuxedo blazer”, I thought you went out for a bike ride! LOL, it looks beautiful. But I was looking forward to seeing how you styled it for a bike ride.
Your statement about wearing new items, especially dressier ones, into your wardrobe really resonated with me. I find that I tend to ‘save’ new pieces to wear for particular events etc., and then I just don’t wear them. It makes sense to me to do what you did and just wear them — and I love how you made the blazer more casual. You’ve got me taking a second look at new purchases. Thank you! p.s. When I first saw your title for the post, I thought you meant you went bicycling in your blazer! Haven’t had enough coffee yet LOL. You look great in all the outfits Jennifer and you certainly take it up a notch with the fedoras.
And yes to velvet blazers – I seem to have always had a version in my closet.

Looking very chic and particularly loving your fedoras on you. As to having a velvet blazer; own only one in a crushed texture (in black with satin covered buttons) that am planning to wear to an upcoming evening function that I am pairing with – satin straight leg pants and in lieu of a belt adding a cumberbund, a v-neck tie-neck blouse (untied in a semi-sheer fabric and in winter white), strappy low heeled dress shoes with a small structured clutch and jewelry consisting of a vintage bugle-beaded cuff bracelet with drop earrings for added femininity and sparkle. (With the exception of the cumberbund and blouse (though I’m toying with the idea of a satin finish camisole in a dark red) I’m shopping my closet and am going to stick with it …. lol!) Regarding scarves; something I did do this past Fall to wear with my numerous blazers (we are now well into winter clothing where I live), I purchased a few ‘blanket scarves’ (actually from Amazon) and resized them (either frayed their edges as easy to do if loosely woven and/or applied a serged serviette edging to them) in order to attain the colors/patterns I wanted and within the price range I was willing to pay. -Brenda-

I just bought a velvet blazer similar to yours, only mine is more blue than green. I love how a casual scarf coordinates with the blazer and gives it a more casual vibe. Iām going to look for a scarf to wear with my blazer too.
I don’t have a velvet blazer, but I have a black velvet top (crew neck, long sleeves, very simple) and I have trouble styling it. Any ideas?
Toss it on with a pair of jeans or corduroy pants and top with long cardigan or any blazer. Basically treat it like a regular tee.
I have a burgundy velvet blazer that I completely forgot about until I saw yours in this post. I love the green, that seems more modern. Really like your red outfit.

I purchased a teal velvet blazer several years ago when I was still working. The deep green you are wearing now appears more versatile to dress up or down. Looks terrific and I love that plaid scarf as well.
