Monday Musings From Mexico

Happy Monday, ladies. Today’s post is a little bit of this and a little bit of that. I think I’ve eaten my body weight in guacamole this week, but it’s all good, and I’ll worry about it when I get home. I’ve been doing some local shopping and find my taste changes based on my location. Bright colors and more ethnic patterns are appealing to me here. It’s a good thing there are only a few tiny shops so I can’t get into too much trouble.

The Slob Hairstyle

It’s not what you think. Apparently, the new trending hairstyle for spring is a “slob”. It’s described as a slick blob that’s sharp in shape but not too precisely cut. It’s a simple cut, all one length, and not as choppy as the bobs of recent years. Most images show hair parted down the middle, so I experimented yesterday, and it flashed me right back to the 70s…and not in a flattering way. When was the last time you parted your hair in the center?

Outfit of the Week

I will be back to the rain and cold weather in no time, so I thought I’d share an outfit of the week… styled on moi. Here’s another rain jacket outfit for a casual day of running errands.

COLE HAAN PACKABLE HODDED RAIN COAT size M / KUT FROM KLOTH ANKLE FLARE JEANS size 29 / SKECHERS GO WALK SNEAKER

This Cole Haan Raincoat is currently 75% percent off at Nordstrom Rack. It’s lightweight and packable with a drawstring in the back waist to snug it up and add some shaping. I found it runs narrow, so I’m glad I opted for the medium.

STRIPED TEE / JEANS / JACKET / SNEAKERS

I paired the jacket with a Breton striped top, and high-rise flared ankle jeans and some comfy Sketchers that are also marked down. They’re stretchy knit sneakers that you can just slip on or tie to snug up. So many of you recommended Sketchers, so I wanted to give them a try, and I can report they are very comfortable!

Save or Splurge

It’s been a while since we had a save or splurge post, so I thought it would be fun to do one with one of the popular dresses I shared here last week.

STRIPED DRESS / GOLD BRACELET / TORTOISE SUNGLASSES / HOOP EARRINGS / WOVEN BAG / WOVEN SANDAL / LIPSTICK

Woven bags are a big trend for spring, and it’s hard to beat a classic striped dress for warmer days. I added simple gold hoops, a neutral-colored woven sandal, a cabled bracelet, and tortoise frame sunglasses, which are a forever classic.

STRIPED DRESS / GOLD BRACELET / TORTOISE SUNGLASSES / HOOP EARRINGS / WOVEN BAG / WOVEN SANDAL / LIPSTICK

Can you tell which look is the most expensive? If so, what tipped you off?

The look on the left comes in at around $13,600.00, and the outfit on the right runs close to $208.00. Great style can be had at all price points, especially when shopping in your own closet!

Thanks for reading, and be sure to wear what makes you feel confident.

  1. Very nice I would feel good in both complete outfits thank you as you say A Classic Hazel

  2. You look very cute in your current Bob and outfit! My Bob has a angle part on my right side. I hate my hair parted in the middle! A Bob cut all one length makes my fine wavy hair look thicker. Easy to style and easy to wear. You look great! Enjoy your time in Mexico!

  3. It appears I might be in the minority camp as what tipped me off was the design of the sunglasses as do have a logo (in this case Gucci) on their temple arm and the nose pads are not frame molded. Love these exercises Jennifer as IMO they prove, for one to look current or stylish they do not have ‘to break the bank’. -Brenda-

    1. Exactly why I love these too Brenda!

  4. That Bottega Veneta bag gave it away for me. I have two vintage ones, wouldnā€™t trade them for anything as now they are back in style as to shape, etc. love the Cole Haan raincoat too..

    1. I love their bags. Lucky you.

  5. That bag on the splurge side is a beautiful thing, (but totally out of my budget)! I might try ordering the Amazon woven bag because I love that look!

    1. There are a lot of gorgeous woven bags around this spring. Iā€™m hunting for just the right one.

  6. Have you ever bought a dress from a “no name company” on Amazon? I am sceptical of having a great shopping experience. I only purchase from companies that have retail outlets.

    1. Thatā€™s what I consider this blue and white dress and was pleasantly surprised.

  7. I have a fantastic hairdresser, and we generally let my hair, which has been cut in a bob forever, go with its natural part. Lately I’ve noticed that it parts down the center – guess I’m accidentally on trend…lol.

    1. I used to wear mine in the center all the time!

Just bought those Kelsey jeans from a local botique. I was hesitant to purchase old school bell bottoms, but these are just right!

  9. The dress was the instant giveaway in the “high” category. Its more complicated construction made it look more expensive.

BTW, I tried out a woven leather shoulder bag and found it too heavy to carry when empty. If I wanted a woven bag, I’d go for a lightweight option from some other material.

  10. This was fun! The bracelet tipped me off, as one has gemstones. Thanks for a great post!

  11. Frances B says:

The diagonal stripes on the neck band of the wider stripe dress are more expensive to produce so I chose that as my indication of the splurge outfit.

  12. I really like the splurge save outfits. I could tell the splurge by the sunglasses and handbag. It’s fun to guess. I have those very same Skechers and they really are comfy. They look great with the cute raincoat. Enjoy your trip šŸŒ¼

  13. Great ideas you have here. You show us we can look smart wearing things that don’t cost a fortune.

  14. Speaking of savings, could you comment on the elastic style sandals you wore with the long black skirt on Sunday? They are a definite bargain at $33 but are they comfy enough to wear to dress up on vacation? I have a pair of good walking sandal but want another with s small wedge. Thanks!

    1. Iā€™ve been wearing them on my vacation and find them quite comfy. Theyā€™re not a ā€œwalkingā€ sandal for long treks but are comfy for dinner out or a shopping excursion.

      1. The shoes just arrived and are just what I wanted. Low cost but classy bling! Even prettier in person. Thanks Jennifer.

      2. Iā€™m so glad you like them too!

  15. I love the splurge/save articles. For me it was the dress that tipped me off. I would love the less expensive dress in a solid color but the stripes are too small. The expensive look has a much better sized stripe for me. I seldom go anywhere where a dress is required so I would definitely be driven by price.

Love the look of the coat, jeans and shirt.

  16. I think the shoe and the handbag or the lipstick were the greatest clues to the price here. I do enjoy your save vs splurge exercises! Have fun in warm and sunny Mexico.

  17. I agree with Janet, your accessories for the lower price point look better than the higher priced outfit, but I adore the J. McLaughlin dress, it is very cute. But what a great price on the Amazon dress! Thanks for sharing Jennifer!

Good morning Jennifer, Iā€™m so happy you showed a straw bag. I havenā€™t had in years, so I decided to look for one in the coming weeks. If you have more suggestions for straw/woven bags please share with is. Have a good day and continue to enjoy the warm sun.šŸŒž

  19. The Brands on the lipstick tipped me off! The gold jewelry in the less expensive one looks more expensive tho. The dress style in the higher one has a better style.
Thanks Jennifer! This is always fun!

    1. Hello, I like the less expensive dress and purse. The smaller stripes look better and I thought the purse looked nicer too. The side tie rarely hits my waist, so the self belt is easier to fit. Enjoy your holiday!
