Monday Musings- Keeping Cool

Monday Musings- Keeping Cool

Happy Monday ladies. We had another scorcher yesterday so my daughter and I took a quick road trip to Donner Lake. There’s nothing quite like cool mountain breezes the sound of water splashing ashore. We twinned in our matching Madewell Whisper T-shirts. She in shorts, me in loose linen pants.

Please note- my content is being stolen and published on another site. If you are not reading this on A Well Styled Life, please click over and read it here.

Here are a few things on my mind this week-

No-Slip Required

Do you wear slips? I’ve become a convert to skirts and dresses this summer because there’s nothing cooler in blistering temperatures. I’m pretty old school, yes I am dating myself here… but I was taught to always wear a slip. I have an entire collection in varying shapes that perform different functions. Some suck everything in, which I seldom bother with. Some smooth things out and some are just to preserve my modesty. The problem is, when it’s hot, I don’t want to add another layer so I love skirts and dresses with the slip sewn in.

This asymmetrical button linen dress would be totally see-through, except it’s lined! I was going to share this dress later this week, but the online sale ends today and if you like it, I want you to be able to pay as little as possible for it. I am wearing a regular length size 10, but it is also available in petite here.

The Jet Settersthe jet setters novel

I love to travel but very few of us are getting to be jet setters this year. This week I’m reading another book chosen for Reese’s book club called The Jet Setters. Its characters are so distinctive I find myself trying to decide which Enneagram number they are! I wonder if I have read too many books on the Enneagram:)  This book has been called one of the best beach reads of 2020. It’s a humorous read and has me itching to book a cruise.

Lip Color To Wear Under A Mask

I hesitate to even write the word mask because every time I do, someone gets incensed about it and gets political (usually on Facebook). The fact remains, I’m wearing a mask whenever I’m outside and but that doesn’t negate my need to add some color to my mouth. Lately, I’ve just been using my lip pencil which stays put but doesn’t make a mess on the inside of my mask. What are you using?

Thanks for reading and remember to wear what makes you feel confident.

A little slip story: my first day as a freshman in an all girls Catholic school, wearing the summer uniform consisting of a beige (yuck) shirtwaist dress, when our homeroom nun told us in no uncertain terms that we must wear a full slip under the uniform. That afternoon, talking to my mom, starting the conversation with the words she would come to dread “Sister says…” Off she went to Alexander’s where she got my full slip for about $3. (Dating myself!) Next morning, in homeroom, we compared slips — most of us had the same one! Our moms had all gone to Alexander’s! Thanks for bringing back that memory. BTW, the slip lasted all four years.

I think we all have funny slip stories. I’ll never forget my sister in laws wedding. We drove 8 hours to get there. My daughter(13) was the flower girl. She forgot her slip so I went to the dollar store and bought a package of men’s white hankies which I stapled together to make a “slip” so people could not see through her white linen skirt.

I, too, am modest but have given up slips for a light Lycra short under dresses and skirts. This also takes care of the thigh rubbing and allows me to walk confidently, comfortably and pain free. No worry about half slips riding up either.

Nothing beats a really pretty white dress for the summer. I like the button detail too. I wear a half slip because I usually wear a skirt and top because of different proportions on top and bottom.. We wear masks. My husband shops for us but always with a mask and alcohol wipes for visiting stores.

I am grocery shopping in person again, but only at a store that hands out free masks at the door. I have my own masks, but I feel safer where other shoppers and staff wear masks. I am ready to go back to online grocery shopping if infection numbers rise. People are disregarding public safety, so it seems likely we’re on the verge of full lockdown again. Sad to say that we live in a “me, me, me” world.

A slip was not negotiable when I was young. Just make sure it doesn’t “show” below the hem. (I can still hear my mother’s disapproving voice, “Her slip is showing.”) I have tried some silk culottes (like underwear) before. Seemed to work.

I love Donner Lake. I can’t help myself from thinking about the Donner Party and their “dinner” when I’m up in that part of the state, though.

I don’t wear slips and rarely wear a dress or skirt. I do like to wear a cotton bike short panty.

I don’t wear skirts or dresses often and when I do, I only wear a slip if the fabric would otherwise let too much be seen. Like you, I’m appalled at some of the responses I’ve seen on Facebook to wearing a mask! It’s just not that big of a thing and certainly not worth getting all worked up about. I don’t bother wearing lip colour under mine.

I, too, would prefer to wear a slip under a dress but, nylon and polyester slips are hot and static-y. It would be really great if the slip manufacturers would make slips in cotton rather than synthetics.

I got rid of all my slips years ago. If a dress is not lined and see-through, I won’t buy it.

I’m sure I’m in the minority but most days I am not wearing any make-up at all. I use a moisturizer around my eyes and on my face and put on a bit of eyebrow gel and that’s it. Anytime I leave the house I have my mask on. The mask covers almost my entire face. I actually think my skin looks better now that I am not putting make-up on it every day.

When wearing dresses and/or skirts…still wear a full slip and/or half slip! I was taught by my Mum that it makes the fabrics glide over your figure and a LADY’s skirt or dress was never to “cup” under her fanny and show her “assets” to the world. Its strange what you remember from childhood. As for linen garments…oh, heck NO! They are a pain in the toosch to iron and wrinkles aren’t my thing.

Why can’t people understand that wearing masks keep us all safe? That we might get on top of this virus if we only suffer through masks temporarily?

You are so fortunate to have your daughter spending time with you. Did she drive down? I miss my daughters who live in Ontario but feel airports and planes a high risk area.

Manufacturers who line linen garments with polyester deserve a place in hell. Just when you think you have located a suitable linen dress, your expectations are dashed! I ended up seeing a lined linen dress! First attempt in decades.

    • Kelly
      July 13, 2020 / 5:06 pm

That’s the way I feel — a polyester lining completely defeats the purpose of wearing linen!

But I wonder what this dress is lined with. The website doesn’t mention that.

I, too, love to wear loose dresses in the summer. My favorite slips are the cotton split leg, culotte style. They protect from see thru and thigh rub (😚). On a side note, when I graduated from high school my grandmother gave me the most beautiful, butterfly delicate, lace trimmed slip. It was styled to wear with mini skirts which gives some idea of it’s age! I treasure it and the thought that she wanted me to have something so lovely. The things that grab your heart are sometimes surprising.

I was taught to wear a slip too! I still have several slips, but don’t know why since I don’t wear dresses at all anymore. It is just habit with me to refresh my lipstick before I leave the house. I have been trying to retrain myself to stop this because of the mask situation – without any luck so far!

Be proud that you’re wearing a mask! Here in your previous hometown, I haven’t seen anyone without a mask in my outings to the P.O., Nob Hill Foods or Target. Of course, those places all are enforcing Contra Costa County’s mandatory mask policy!

I wear a lot of dresses as I live in Florida and it’s always hot. I have a half-slip for those times that the dress is a bit sheer. See through is not a flattering look as far as dresses go.

I’ve seen straight through other women’s dresses while out in public, and that’s not a look I want, so I wear a half slip if my dress is thin. If that makes me “old school” or “old-fashioned,” then so be it. I haven’t worn any lipstick since early March because I always wear a mask in public.

        Your dress is really attractive.
I would wear a slip if my dress or skirt were see-through. No matter what age, one should strive to be lady-like, I believe.
So sorry about your content being high jacked. You work very hard without having to also manage this extra headache. Sending positive thoughts that it will be resolved soon.
Cruising can be a comfortable means of traveling particularly without having to pack and repack luggage, and I was disheartened to learn that cruise ships have permission to dump their trash in our increasing delicate oceans. It’s a matter I will have to consider for future travel.

Has anyone heard of the wonderful company ThistleFarms from Nashville?
They employee women who are transitioning from life in prison to a productive new career for making wonderful natural products for body and bath.

I, too, am old school and believe in wearing slips. Like you said, though, they add an unwelcome layer when it is hot. Love the linen dress, except for the deep v-neck. Again, modesty is a factor for me when it comes to necklines (and I have absolutely nothing to show). I am going to be on the lookout for dresses with sewn in linings and necklines I can feel comfortable wearing. I also want my upper arms covered (I don’t want much, do I?) The search begins. Thanks for the book suggestion…I love a light summer read.

As far as lipstick hues I’m wearing nudes, one just a quick grab from CVS rack called Nearly There and the other from MAC my favorite lipsticks! It’s called Angel. It looks pink online but it’s nude. Love the feel when not in my mask . Stay healthy and stay cool!

I have been wearing LipSense by SeneGence for approximately 20 years. It is one of those ”better than sliced bread” products as it stays on all day, doesn’t “bleed” into those vertical lines, and comes in dozens of colors. As it turns out, I have no stains on my face mask either! It is only sold by local distributors so one needs to go to the SeneGence site to find who is selling it in your locale.

I love photos of royalty in all their outfits and jewels, and most often I note they need a slip. There is nothing so unattractive as a skirt stuck in your legs. And showing quite a bit more than I want to see.

It’s such a sweet moment when we realize that our relationship with our daughters has become more of a friendship. I am so fortunate to be in that place now!
Once again, you’re showing us how to maintain our personal style during a heat wave. The linen dress looks perfect in style and color. The subtle structure that lining gives a garment is wonderful. Even on a breezy day the skirt on this dress will not hug or crease where we are not comfortable.
I gave up lip liner many years ago. I try to avoid any hard lines on my face but…I may need to rethink. I can see where the color on the lip liner would stay in place better than my favorite lip stick. But seriously, do I really need any lip color under my face masks?! 😂
Now, I must make the most of this beautiful Monday!

I’m not bothering with lip color, just balm right now, since my [email protected] is on 9hrs at work. But if I did want color while wearing, I’d use a stain & cover with balm. Have slips but haven’t worn one in years. Have 3 “emergency” dresses (weddings, funerals), but usually wind up in pants. Stay cool & safe.

So glad you have time with your daughter!

I really need lip colour and wear a matte stain type of lip gloss usually which doesn’t stain my mask.. The only staining issue I have is from wearing tinted sunscreen in the summer. That will rub off on white lined masks. I do have a collection of dark lined masks to address that.

I don’t think I’ve worn slips for at least 25 years. I buy skirts and dresses that don”t require them. I do have slip shorts by Thigh Society that I wear for thigh chafing/modesty if needed.
