The Most Comfortable Bras for Women Over 50

Last January, I mentioned in this post that I donated my older bras and asked the AWSL community for your favorite bra recommendations. I got a lot of helpful feedback, which inspired me to dive a little bit deeper into the ones you suggested and begin the search for the best and most comfortable bras for women over 60. I have tried a few bras on this list since last year, so I thought it was time for an updated list.

Years ago, I gave up underwire bras and have not missed them one bit. I am personally not well endowed; however, I know I have readers with chests of all different sizes and preferences. I think we can all agree, though, that finding a comfortable bra can be tough. Things aren’t where they used to be, and what you want and need in a bra has likely changed. Whether you are looking to find a supportive bra to lift the girls,Ā a minimizer to help smooth and sculpt, or simply one that just doesn’t hurt to wear, this comprehensive list has a bra for you, no matter your budget or your bust size.

Before you get started, though, I want to call out a few things:

  • If you havenā€™t gone in for a professional bra fitting in a year or more, do yourself a favor and get one. It makes all the difference in how your clothes fit and can make you look slimmer also! Nordstrom is a great place to get one, or you can use a store locator here and here.
  • If you’re looking to add some new bras to your drawer, consider donating your old ones to women’s shelters. Bras are under-donated and much needed at these places.

Best Wireless Bras for Women Over 50

Warner’s Easy Does It Underarm-Smoothing Wireless Bra

TheĀ Warner’s No Side Effects Underarm-Smoothing Comfort Wireless Lightly Lined Bra has quickly become my favorite! It was on the list last year as one to try, and I’m so glad I did, as I reach for it more than any other bra. It has flexible foam cups and extra coverage side panels to provide a seamless fit for your tops. The elastic-free sides and back provide bulge-free underarm smoothingā€¦even under a tank top! You can read more about my love for Warner’s bras here.

Warner’s Womenā€™s Cloud 9 Super Soft Wireless Lightly Lined Comfort Bra

Here’s another one from Warner’s that I find myself wearing often. This Warner’s Womenā€™s Cloud 9 Super Soft Wireless Lightly Lined Comfort BraĀ is amazing! As you know, Iā€™m a firm believer that nude bras and panties are the most useful because theyā€™re invisible under all your clothes, including white shirts. I chose toasted almond for this bra, which is a deep nude on me. It gives a smooth look and is a totally invisible look under all my tops. The bottom band doesnā€™t dig in the way some bras do, plus it separates and smooths everything out. Iā€™m not well-endowed, and I donā€™t need or wearĀ underwireĀ bras, so I appreciate the lift and structure I get from this lightly linedĀ wirelessĀ bra.

True & Co Triangle Bra

This bra ties for second on my list of favorite bras, as they were my go-to for several years. I recommend these bras to all of my fellow small, busted, underwire haters! Many brands don’t give much thought to ladies who need A-cup sizes, so this sort of bra is a great alternative. They provide up to one inch of lift and support. This bra is buttery soft, smooth, and invisible under my clothing, and the v-neck allows me to wear it with a variety of necklines.

Other True & Co Bras I’ve heard good things about:

Sloggi Invisible Bra

Next up is this bralette from Sloggi recommended by Eileen. This seamless bra is made of super smooth, multi-stretch fabric developed in Japan. It has wide straps and is invisible under clothing. This one has removable push-up pads inside. The reviews on this one say to size up as they tend to run small.

Tommy John Wireless Bras

This bra has been circulating on Instagram, and I really want to try it. I’ve seen a lot of women of all ages share it and swear by how comfortable it is that they don’t even realize it’s on. Let me know in the comments if anyone has tried it.

Playtex 18-Hour Ultimate Lift Wireless

If the straps on your bras tend to dig in and bother your shoulders, try this Playtex bra that has wider straps with added cushion. This wire-free bra gives you just the right amount of lift and support for under $17 and has 63,000 4.5-star reviews to prove it! I love the scalloped neckline, and the added pattern is a fun touch. Sizes 36B- 46D.

Chantelle Women’s C Magnifique Full Bust Wireless Bra

Several AWSL readers love the Chantelle brand, and I trust their recommendations! Laurel says “It is a really comfortable underwire recommended to me at a Nordstrom bra fitting. It has been my go to ever since.” You can also find an underwire version of this bra here if you prefer.

The Best Underwire Bras for Women Over 50

Spanx Bra-llelujah!

I’ve heard nothing but wonderful things about this full-coverage, front-clasp bra from Spanx, and it’s also on my list of bras to try! Reviews claim it is super soft and supportive. I love that it has wider straps to prevent the straps from cutting into your shoulders, although I do wish they were adjustable. Sizes 32B-40DD.

A reader of mine, Melissa, said that this is her go-to everyday bra, and I’m planning to give it a try.

Soma Bodify Perfect Coverage

Soma interviewed 1,500 women about their complaints when it comes to bras while they were designing this Bodify t-shirt bra. The solution is this best-seller that has a patent pending Floataway Wireā„¢ that moves with you and clever Get a Grip strap that are designed to stay put. I really like the added breathable mesh panel in the front, as it’s functional but also adds a little visual interest! Sizes 32B-42DDD.

Looking for a wireless version? Try Soma’s Enbliss Wireless Bra!

From my readers:

  • Margot shared, “I go to Soma for bras ā€“ I am well endowed ā€“ but find it has as much to do with the fitter as the brand.”
  • Susan had similar comments that she is “well-endowed and has mainly Soma bras that never wear out.”

Vanity Fair Full Figure Beauty Back Smoothing Bra

If you have a larger chest and are looking for comfortable support with wider straps and full coverage, no-spill cups, look no further than this full figure, back smoothing bra. This bra from Vanity Fair comes highly rated and is also available in a wire-free version! Sizes 34G-44DDD.

Bali Women’s Comfort Revolution Front-Close Shaping Underwire

This bra by Bali is all about comfortable support! The deep plunge of this bra makes it perfect for deeper v-neck tops. The other feature I love is the front clasp for easy on and off. It’s definitely worth adding to your arsenal of undergarments. Sizes 34B-42DD.

Other Reader Favorite Bras

Many of you have mentioned that Wacoal makes some of your favorite bras so I went on a major search to find the best ones. Below are a few of the top-rated ones, along with reader comments!

“I like Wacoal bras as well. They are comfortable and hold up very well, No pun intended!” “My favorite bra is Wacoal, and they have a wide variety of styles, and colors.”

Bras for Busty Women

While I mentioned above that I’m not well-endowed, I do have a friend that is. Here are a couple of options that she swears by:

  • Third Love 24/7 Perfect Coverage Bra: This one has memory foam straps that don’t dig into your shoulders while still offering full coverage and great support. If you need a T-shirt bra, this one is it. Sizes 3sB-44H.
  • Elomi Matilda Full Figure Underwire Plunge Bra: If you’re looking for a minimizing bra that is fit-focused, she recommends this one. She said that she wears these most days. The only thing you have to be careful of is the embroidery can show through on tighter tops and certain fabrics. Sizes 32GG-44GG.

What to Keep in Mind When Shopping for Bras

Bras should provide comfortable support, look smooth under clothes, and conceal your nipples (if youā€™re modest). There areĀ push-up versionsĀ to enhance cleavage,Ā T-shirtĀ to smooth and conceal nipples,Ā minimizersĀ to reduce volume,Ā sports brasĀ to prevent movement,Ā demi brasĀ to wear under low-cut tops,Ā racerbacksĀ to wear under halter and tops with close-set straps and on and on. Finding the best bra for you can take trial and error!

A well-rounded wardrobe consists of bras in a variety of colors and styles for your different clothing. The one thing I don’t recommend owning, though, is a white bra. You can find out why in this post!

  1. Cynthia West Pacheco says:

I prefer bras that will minimize my girls. My frame doesn’t seem to support DD cups.

  2. Linda Cuffe says:

I 100% agree with the recommendation to get a bra fitting from time to time. Last one was revolutionary – I was wearing 34B (no underwire) and she did the fitting and told me I should be wearing 32DD & suggested underwire. I couldn’t believe it, but she pulled several in that size and what an incredible difference. The girls were up where they should be, and no spillage anywhere. She recommended underwire, and though I initially balked, the bras are very comfortable and give me the support I need. I’m a convert! My new brand is Natori.

  3. Valerie McMullen says:

Iā€™ve been recently on the hunt for a new bra since I got rid of all my underwire bras and landed on the Warners Blissful Benefits Underarm Smoothing Wireless Lightly Lined bra. So comfortable and doesnā€™t feel like Iā€™m wearing a bra! Walmart has them priced well too! Thanks for a timely post.

  4. That Chantelle is still my favorite. I like the analogy to finding the jeans you love. šŸ˜Š The other bra I swear by is the Wacoal sports bra with the underwires on the outside.

  5. Every spring I replace/replenish my bra collection with the Warner bra. For me, they provide a smooth coverage and so dang affordable too! I do have one in the blush shade and think itā€™s very pretty. I am not a large cup size so this bra works so perfectly for me.

  6. Thanks for a great post as always! Couldn’t agree more about the Warners Cloud 9, the only bra I wear. I will try the toasted almond, as the color I currently have is a light cream and shows a bit under white tops.

    1. Getting the right nude that’s invisible is really important. Mine is deeper than I would have thought and has a bit of pink in it.

  7. I can vouch for the first two on the list. Well done, Jennifer. No more underwires!

  8. I am a 32C and have always worn an underwire since that’s what I got fitted with at Nordstrom. Chantrelle is what fit the best for me. I’ve had a lumpectomy and have an insert and an underwire helps hold that in place. I would love to check out a Wacoal bra.

    1. I e had several fittings at Nordstrom as well.

  9. Knix are my favourite. Check out their shop in Kitsilano next time you are in Vancouver.

  10. So glad you hear you advocate a professional bra fitting. I went for one a couple of years ago and discovered I had been wearing the wrong size bra for years. Getting one that fit me correctly gave me more comfort and a much better “line” in how my tops fit. Professional fitters know what they are doing!!

    1. They sure do. It makes a world of difference.

  11. Am I the only one who dislikes the pads? and what a burden on the environment/landfill!

  12. Helpful post, thank you Jennifer! I am 34C and also prefer wireless. My everyday is Warners Cloud 9; next try is your other Warner’s style. For casual, I like Neiwai brand. My best bra is Spanx, their wireless Kohl’s version called Red Hot – next try is their Bra-llelujah!

I was disappointed with (not a good fit) Tommy John and Soma bras.

    1. I just ordered that Spanx from Kohls to try. Thanks for the tip.

  13. Hi Jenniferā€¦Happy New year! I am looking for COTTON padded AA cup bras. Anything else causes me to heat up and sweat and rash. Alternative choices from foam and plastics. Any suggestions? I have ANCIENT playtex bras that no one else makes anymore. šŸ˜¢
    Sandra Winfield

    1. Ancient bras canā€™t be giving you much support. Iā€™d look for some replacements.

  14. I tried both of the Warner bras based on one of your earlier posts and really like them. Itā€™s nice to get something I like that isnā€™t so expensive!

    1. I agree. Great bras can be very affordable.

  15. I am one of the women who falls into a crack. I am a 34 DD. Now a lot of support Bras come in band size too big for me. I currently like the Soma bra but not the one on your page. I tried that one and it was not a good fit for me. I am also 5 2 and that does not help that I am short. Right now I need to lose about 5 pounds, Any excess weight goes to my breasts. I think you have to go in and try the bras on and then put a blouse over it and see how it looks. Some blouse come with a snap and for me that is extremely helpful. By the way I did have a breast reduction.

  16. Sharon K. says:

Hi Jennifer, Iā€™m a (fitted) Wacoal girl through and through, but with one big problem, now solved. I have narrow shoulders that slope and have spent my whole life reaching into my shirts to yank my straps back up. SO uncomfortable and unattractive! Last year I found RAZOR Bra Strap Clips Holders on Amazon. They are narrow adjustable straps that hook to your bra straps horizontally and they work! Only need to place them a couple of inches above the band in the back. Itā€™s a little bit of a wriggle to put the bra on, but so worth keeping straps in place. Inexpensive and available in various colors. Only for narrow straps, though.

    1. Brilliant solution. Thank for sharing those with us.

  17. I recently had a fitting after weight loss. The fitter said something to me that resonated as she fitted me to the exact same two Wacoal bras that someone else had fitted me into years before: bras are like jeans. What fits depends on your body type. Once you find your brand and style stick with it! I am a short waisted 36DDD and if I have to wear an under wire (fitter was like girl, donā€™t kid yourself you need an underwire) itā€™s the Awareness bra or the Halo Lace. I havenā€™t regularly worn underwires since before Covid, so back to getting used to them. Even well fitting ones chafe me by the end of the day. I use a heavy layer of anti-chafe balm. Luckily Iā€™m hybrid and donā€™t need to wear underwires daily.

    1. I hadnā€™t heard that analogy before. Luckily Iā€™m not large enough to need underwires.

  18. I like Warners bras as well, Iā€™ve bought many over the years, but I havenā€™t tried the Underarm Smoothing style yet, will make that my next one! Weā€™ve probably already said this but removable pads are a no go for me. What a pain in the neck! šŸ˜€

  19. Thanks so much for your posts, which are so stylish for ladies our age. Surely I am not the only reader who needs a front closure bra. I have had both shoulders replaced and can only wear regular bras if I fasten them in front and then wrestle them around and struggle to get the straps up. That does hurt a bit. You did mention one front closure but it didnā€™t offer much support for a D cup. Does your larger busted friend have any front closure suggestions?

    1. I will check with her. Thatā€™s a real concern.

    2. I also have shoulder issues and wear a D cup. I wear Wacoal front hook bras.
