New Beginnings and Sneakers

Happy New Year ladies! I’m 2 for 2 with the gifts I’m giving myself this season and darn proud of myself. I laced myĀ sneakers on Saturday and went for what I thought was a long walk. Sadly, the app on my phone recordedĀ that I’d only taken half the number of steps that I’d logged while shopping with my daughter! Could shopping be better for me?

Halfway through the walk, my legs began to ache and my hip started throbbing. By the time I dragged my sorry butt home my bunion was screaming, my back hurt and my ego was sorelyĀ bruised. How did I get so out of shape? One lazy day at a time.

Note to self…stylish sneakers may be comfy for wanderingĀ around but don’tĀ cut it for aerobic walks onĀ asphalt.

I hitĀ the view from Sailor Jack's tavern

We drove to Benicia in the afternoon and sat by the water, soaking in the view. It never gets old to me. When we were chilled to the bone we stopped in Sailor Jack’s Tavern for a hot cup of tea to warm our bones.

  1. Very inspiring to read all of the fitness comments from other readers! I also keep as active as possible, a weekly routine of cardio, weight lifting and Pilates/yoga stretching. I use an at home DVD called T25, its very good, as it adjusts from beginner levels to more advanced fitness levels. It also features a modifier, to assist with alternate exercises if the ones are too strenuous to joints, etc. I lost approx. 24 lbs. three years abo, and kept it off!! I mix up workouts, go to the gym, and use a trainer on my bike when too lazy to go to gym. My motivation is 2 part–health concerns, as I feel so much better, reduced menopause symptoms, and vanity– I found clothing just fit better and really helped my self esteem. I am 60 now, and can still bike at least 30 miles in one trip without pain. Thank you Jennifer for sharing your challenges, it is inspiring to hear how well you do and all of the others great success!!

    1. Thanks inspiring Cotask! 30 miles is pretty amazing. I love reading how my readers are staying in shape which motivates me to keep going. I have 2 friends who swear by Pilates so Iā€™d really like to incorporate it into my routine.

Exercise = YES! My husband and I say that sitting is the new smoking. Get a fitbit (or similar) and commit to walking 10,000 steps every day. I’m 61, and on days when I don’t exercise I feel sluggish. Who needs that? Also–stretching has become more important as I’ve grown older. Nothing fancy, just good stretches that I hold for at least 30 seconds. Helps me feel limber all day. Start slow, keep at it, and it will become part of your routine. You’ll love how you feel!

    1. Thatā€™s the best result Heidi, loving how we feel. The stiffness, and aches and pains are unwelcome but I know Iā€™ll feel better as I get in better shape. I used to have a Fitbit, Iā€™ll have to see if I still do. Happy New Year!

  3. When you have problem feet you should not be buying walking shoes at DSW:) it’s worth the investment to go to a store that specializes in fitting walkers/runners/hikers. I like New Balance because they address many foot issues. One thing I didn’t appreciate until I was properly fitted was that a walking/ running shoe may need to be a larger size because the foot swells. I normally wear a 9 in regular shoes but my runners are a 91/2 also I was wearing shoes that over corrected my pronating feet…so that’s why my foot, knees and hips were so sore. My bunions were screaming! Could be the reason why your hips were so sore. A badly fitting exercise shoe can do a whole lotta damage over time.
Forget cute, wear what doesn’t cause pain or more problems in the future. I save cute for my regular shoes because there are plenty of great manufacturers of good every day comfort shoes. Ecco, Dansko, Cobb Hill, Walkport.
Believe me I walk a huge hospital everyday. 8,000 steps at least Those hard floors are killer but I can stop and sit in my office. Long distance exercise, ie non stop walking at a fast pace requires a different type of shoe.

    1. Excellent advice! I remember being fitted when I used to run, many years ago, and they corrected for the way I walked. Itā€™s time to do that again because at this age lots of things are different.

Miranda Esmond-White has some lovely stretching exercises that target the entire body helping maintain flexibility. She is on Youtube and on DVD. I hope to add some gentle stretching to my routine this year.

You are blessed with good weather for walking. When it’s 26 degrees below zero celsius I want to stay bundled up inside.

    Wishing you well in 2018.

    1. That is too cold for me too! Iā€™ve looked her up and love her common sense approach to getting limber. Iā€™ve lost a lot of flexibility so need to work on that too! Happy New Year!

  5. Jennifer, Listen to me: GET. A. FITBIT……Your workouts will become much more challenged…I won’t bore you with details but this little buddy is my coach and my inspiration…GET. A. FIT. BIT.
