Open Stitch Sweater and Shorts

Who remembers those open stitch sweaters that were so popular back in the 80s? They looked like crochet work but likely weren’t. I had a soft ivory one that I wore the heck out of. I’ve noticed a bevy of them around these days. Most are cotton or cotton blends making them a great option for warm weather but still give you some arm coverage and help with frigid air conditioning.

This open stitch pullover (on sale) from Chicos comes in several colors in regular and petite in 0/2-2-/22. I couldn’t resist the navy but honestly, it was a draw with the white and soft sage. I see each one fitting into my wardrobe seamlessly.

I’m wearing a navy tank underneath but you could easily wear a nude tee so the lines of the tank didn’t show through. As you see, I’m giving shorts another shot. It was 105 the other day so I’m going to experiment with more shapes.

These linen shorts come in an olive type green they call kale and this beige, which they describe as a vintage petal. It’s not pink so I’m not sure where the name comes from. They have a high waist and a slouchy feel with wide legs which feel very cool. They’re linen, so they do wrinkle. I’ve made peace with the wrinkles, but you need to know they do and will. They’re sized 00-12, I’m wearing a 6.

I’m a big fan of Gentle Souls shoes for comfort and style. These slides come in tons of colors, but I couldn’t resist the pewter. Metallic shoes and bags coordinate with everything so work as a great neutral. I find all Gentle Souls run large so I went down to an 8 1/2…I usually wear a 9.

I shared this one with you last week, and simply love it! The V-neckline is more flattering than crew on many women, myself included, so I ordered it in this pretty stripe.

Thanks for reading ladies and remember to wear what makes you feel confident!

  1. Love open weave sweaters.
Love to wear them with camis or tanks. Sometimes I mix the colors like white with black. Or whatever your pleasure.
You look great in those shorts and your hair is beautiful. 👌

  2. I find open-weave snags too easily for me. I’m with you on Gentle Souls, though. Great brand and coomfy.

  3. I’ve always loved open weave sweaters. I have a few that are tighter weave and you don’t need to wear anything under them if you don’t want to. This one looks really nice on you as do the shorts.

Your hair is looking great and the navy sweater is so attractive.

  5. First, I hope you wear the shorts outfit AND the linen pants outfit a lot because you look fabulous in both!!! Second, you look so good in them … I just bought the linen outfit too! Hope I look 1/2 as good in it!

  6. I love those sweaters and own several. I usually wear them with tanks or long sleeve thin cotton t-shirts. I am a big fan of Bermuda shorts — slim and just the right length. This look elongates legs and works for me.

  7. I really like the navy open stitch sweater on you. How did the sizes run? I’m 5’1, size 14-16. Wondering whether I should go do petite or Women’s?

You look great in the top and shorts, great legs if I may say. I haven’t worn shorts in years but do admire someone who looks good in them. I have an open stitch sweater in a taupe which I love. Take care, love your blog!

  8. YES, am loving these open weave sweaters as do have one from two years ago, however am waiting for our stores to open up to search out selections. That said; I did order a cotton beach pullover cover up (weeks ago) as was looking for an O-W sweater in black which actually met my expectation in quality but it is a little longer than I wish (since a tunic length), but will suffice until I find something shorter. As to your shorts; you definitely look great in them! Also appreciating the links provided for the metallic sandals. -Brenda-

    1. I would love to find a black one. What brand did you find?

      1. The name is Wander Agio Beach Coverup / Seller Amazon.ca. (Style I purchased is scoop neck/long sleeved comes in three colors. Beige/Black/White with different designs in 8 other colours. Description reads cotton and linen.) It washed up exceptionally well and will conform to your body type plus you can adjust it where necessary and it will hold its shape when on (and goes back to its original shape when off.) Did check, the USA website and it appears the style I got are currently sold out of them. -Brenda-

      2. P.S.: Sorry Jennifer, include the word ‘net’ in your search as they do have several designs in cover-ups.

First off, Jennifer you look great in shorts….really great! And I’m anxious to see and try on a linen/cotton open weave sweater to fit over a tank top or a cami. I can’t imagine a sweater with the high humidity of our summers, but in evening sometimes the air temp does drop. We’ll see how it goes. I do like the off white you wore last week, with Vee neck.

    1. I do remember the humidity back East, it’s brutal.

  10. I am so glad you gave shorts another try. You look great. I am much older than you and I wear shorts. It is hot in the South. Every year I say this is last year for shorts then it gets hot.

  11. Sandy Baron says:

You look great in the shorts Jennifer. I’m trying to get over the linen wrinkles. Working on that.
    Happy summer.

  12. I love the look of these open stitch sweaters, but I wonder if they would make my chest look bigger than it is. All that texture might visually add bulk, right? Of course, on you, these sweaters look terrific, Jennifer!

    1. Some are thicker than others which would add bulk. The very thin ones are the best idea. Wearing a darker color on your bottom half also gives visual balance.

      1. Thank you for your suggestions!

  13. I buy linen because it’s cool and is one of the few shirt fabrics that cover my arms and keeps me cool. I can layer it. No other fabric seems to do the trick. I love the looks on you, particularly the navy open weave. I personally don’t have these type of sweaters since they aren’t the type I would wear for everyday use.
I may try shorts again if I can find the right length.
    Thanks for keeping us posted!

    1. I’m still working on shorts, and some alternatives 😉

  14. I know linen is cool in summer but I can’t get past the wrinkles! BTW, your hair look fabulous!

    1. I hear you. I don’t like how they look, but it’s too hot for me to not wear 😉 Thanks, I love good hair days
