Pattern Check
Is there anything more classic than black and white? It’s perennially popular. I’m a huge fan of black and white stripe but that’s as far as my pattern play has gone, before now. Traditional menswear patterns have never appealed to me but when I tried They’re my second pair of patterned pants and will be more versatile than I anticipated. I picture them with a white jean jacket and keds during the spring and looking more formal with a dressy sweater and boots this winter.
I wanted to let these houndstooth pants take center stage so downplayed everything else.
A simple long black duster and white tank are like a blank canvas but I felt the outfit needed a pop of something extra so I added a Leopard patterned bag. I use leopard as a neutral in my wardrobe and find it coordinates with most things.
SHOP HOUNDSTOOTH
I added a long strand of faux pearls and knotted them to bring the length up to mid-chest. Worn full length would have made me appear shorter…never my goal. I could have knotted it higher or added another strand but I was going for simple…everything.
Now that I’ve discovered houndstooth, I’m finding it everywhere. I’ve ordered

Looking good!I checked the fabric for your pants and I bet they’re very comfortable, plus they look just right on you.
Thanks Julie!
Very cute, Jennifer! Love the knotted pearls too. Hope Lucy is feeling better…
Thanks so much. We start her Interferon next week…hopefully
I have similar pieces in my wardrobe and reach for that combination often. I like your addition of the leopard handbag and love the length of the duster on you!
Thank you Creal! They’re so fun
Where the pants rest at your waist makes you look thinner. And, I think that duster makes you look longer and taller. Great look!
Thanks so much! Taller and thinner is always a plus since I’m short and my weight is climbing!
You look very classy today but then, you always do. I like menswear inspired prints – houndstooth, plaid and check. Luckily, they are trending at the moment. I always keep the rest of my outfit a solid material, so there is no clashing. Although, I have seen some of the younger bloggers mix prints magnificently.
Thanks Joanna! I love to see how they mix patterns. Baby steps for me since I’m just starting to wear pattern. I’m most comfortable wearing it with solids too.
I’ve always loved menswear patterns, especially black and white houndstooth. I treat it as almost a neutral and add a pretty pashmina or patterned scarf easily, so color options for accessories are endless. It works, just like your fabulous leopard bag! You always find the most beautiful backdrops for your photos!!
I’m going to have to try them with some color. I was thinking soft pink would be pretty too! Thanks, the leaves are so pretty this time of year.
We know all about houndstooth here in Alabama. It is huge with the University of Alabama. Bear Bryant always wore a houndstooth hat, now it is everywhere
Ah… I’m late to the game:)
A nice outfit on you! Thanks for the link to the belt – it might just be what I didn’t know I needed.
I didn’t know I needed it either, I love it!
I love so called menswear. Im a big fan of stripes and really like checks too but they take a little more thought. Smaller hounstooth usually works for me. I am 5’3″ and pear shaped so I need to consider that. I am also a fan of gray flannal. Your outfit looks great on you!
Thanks! I do love gray flannel too but haven’t seen a lot of it lately.
