Perfected Modern Classics From Nordstrom

Classics are the backbone of many women’s wardrobes, but that doesn’t mean they need to all look the same. Updated versions of classic pieces keep us from looking outdated, and that keeps us looking current.

OPEN EDIT HALF ZIP COTTON BLEND SWEATER size S / NYDJ COOLMAX JEANS size 6 / NECKLACE / PEARLS STUDS / CABLE BRACELET

This Open Edit sweater has a petite-friendly cropped length and front zip with a classic polo collar style. It comes in three colors, sizes 00-16. The raglan shoulder is a personal favorite because they’re just so much more flattering than dropped shoulders on most women. They require more fabric, so they cost brands more to produce, but they’re well worth it.

Here are some more cotton blend sweaters to perk up your spring wardrobe-

NYDJ COOLMAX SLIM ANKLE BOOTCUT JEANS size 6 / OPEN EDIT SWEATER size S / JACK ROGERS SANDALS

These Coolmax NYDJ slim bootcut jeans are made from a special moisture-wicking fabric that’ll keep us cool in the hot weather. They have a nice high rise and come in sizes 00-18. These classic white jeans fit beautifully and will get tons of wear this summer. What you don’t see in this picture is these Spanx Thinstincts mid-thigh shorts. I haven’t worn shapewear for years but knew I wanted some additional support for my knits and thin pants. I must have tried on ten or more shapers before I found these ones. I love how they smooth everything out, are comfy and don’t show.

Part of what makes a jean flattering, in my book, is the placement of back pockets. Low ones make your backside look long and droopy, and higher ones help your butt look smaller. These ones are well-proportioned and placed high.

FAHERTY BUTTON FRONT PEASANT BLOUSE size M / KUT FROM THE KLOTH KELSEY HIGH RISE FLARE size 6 / BIRDIES PHOEBE WOVEN MULE / CABLE CLASSIC HOOP EARRING

These Kut From The Kloth jeans are a high-rise flare in very soft denim. They have an insert down the inside of the leg which gives the flare. This wash is a nice light color for spring, but they’d also look great over booties right now. The inseam is 27 1/2, and the raw hem means you can trim them to the length you need.

BIRDIES PHEOBE WOVEN MULE size 9

My Birdies woven mules are as comfy as I anticipated and then some. The woven leather is soft from the get-go, but the weaving gives them extra softness to stretch. I love the two-tone effect the weaving gives, and the tassel is fun. These are almost sold out in both colors, so I’m hopeful they will restock. I think we may find the best things sell out fast this season, so we need to be prepared to act when we see what we like. I take my regular size in Birdies and never size up in a mule because I don’t like the look of extra insole showing beyond my heel.

FAHERTY BUTTON FRONT BLOUSE

This Faherty peasant blouse is a new look for me and one that I’m liking. It’s soft, pretty, and feminine without being too girly or frou-frou. This blouse is a soft white, organic cotton with pin tuck pleats in front, delicate ruffles at the neck and cuff, and has open stitch insets along the armholes and neck.

FAHERTY BUTTON FRONT PEASANT BLOUSE size M / KUT FROM THE KLOTH KELSEY HIGH RISE FLARE size 6 / BIRDIES PHOEBE WOVEN MULE / CABLE CLASSIC HOOP EARRING

There’s a lot of delicate detailing going on with this blouse, and I love all of it. The fabric is lightweight, but a nude bra does not show through, which was mandatory for me because a camisole would defeat the whole purpose of wearing something cool in the hot weather. It comes in sizes 0-16.

HALOGEN SOFT RIBBED CARDIGAN size L PLUS SIZE HERE / HALOGEN WIDE LEG LINED PANTS size S / OPEN EDIT MIXED MEDIA NECKLACE / SAM EDELMAN LOW BLOCK HEEL SANDAL

This classic button-front cardigan is updated with an all-over rib and a modern shorter length. Since I was planning to wear this closed as a top, I sized up to a large. That makes the sleeves longer, but I always fold or push up my sleeves so that it won’t matter. If wearing it open over a tank or blouse, you could go with your regular size. This comes in five colors, sizes 00-20W. Plus size in blue here.

OPEN EDIT PASTEL NECKLACE

I added this summery pastel necklace made from recycled resin and metal. It weighs next to nothing, so it’ll be perfect on hot days. Resin jewelry comes in some of the prettiest shades with a retro and modern vibe that really appeals to me. They’re often very affordable, making them the perfect jewelry to take when you travel. Here are a few more that caught my eye-

HALOGEN SOFT RIBBED CARDIGAN size LPLUS SIZE HERE / HALOGEN WIDE LEG LINED PANTS size S / OPEN EDIT MIXED MEDIA NECKLACE / SAM EDELMAN LOW BLOCK HEEL SANDAL

Remember when I told you I would not be wearing pants with the new wide elastic band in the back? I changed my mind when I realized the back of my waistbands are always covered so that they won’t show anyway, and they help make pants really comfy. These wide-leg pants do have that elastic band in the back and a smooth waistband in front. I was also delighted to find these are fully lined because white pants are notorious for being see-through. These also come in black, in sizes 00-20w. Black in plus sizes here.

HALOGEN SOFT RIBBED CARDIGAN size LPLUS SIZE HERE / HALOGEN WIDE LEG LINED PANTS size S / OPEN EDIT MIXED MEDIA NECKLACE / SAM EDELMAN LOW BLOCK HEEL SANDAL

They’re a pull-on style with pocket “detail” on the sides. The website shows the model’s hand in the pockets, but that’s not accurate because they’re not open; they just look like a pocket. They’re machine wash tumble dry, and the perfect length for me without hemming. I’m wearing them with my low-block heeled sandals, but they also work dressed down with flat sneakers. These sandals come in six colors, sizes 5-12.

Nordstrom is my favorite department store for so many reasons, not the least of which is their incredible customer service with free shipping and returns. Joining the Nordy club here is free and allows you to earn points towards notes you can use to shop, plus you get free basic alterations. They also offer BOPUS, ROTUS (reserve online, try on in-store), and curbside pickup.

  1. The lavender sweater is so beautiful on you! I immediately clicked to buy it and it’s sold out in my size. My disappointment was short-lived when I realized it was cropped and fell right across the stomach! That’s a no no for me. Loved the light blue cropped sweater on you too. Just beautiful. Nordstrom really has great clothes! I appreciate it when you showcase them.

  2. great looks, but what I really noticed was how lovely your hair is looking!!

  3. I love the look of the blue Birdies! Just wondering though about your comment on not having the shoe past your heel….it is supposed to be a bit past the heel so that you don’t hit the edge and roll off resulting in injury

    1. I donā€™t hang over the back but err on the shorter side with a mule. If theyā€™re too short the donā€™t fit properly.

  4. Great post! The detailed info you provide is so helpful and thank you, thank you for showing the back of the pants. That helps sooooo much with sizing and/or purchase decisions!
Loved all the pieces especially the lavender sweaterā€¦.

  5. Love the peasant blouse. It’s just a little bit boho.

    1. That’s why I love it. I can’t wear full-on boho, but I love a smidge of it. I may grow into more of it because it’s feeling like a nice change for me.

  6. The white peasant blouse is in my cart. Its perfect to start spring with the long sleeves when the temps are still a little cool. Keep up the great posts showing us what is out there. Carole

Jennifer, your emails always teach me something and/or broaden my perspective; thank you! Talbots and Nordstrom are my favorite stores; I always point out your blog to the sales associate who helps me as most are unaware of your endorsement of them. I’m not a plus size but appreciate your inclusion of this long-ignored demographic.

  8. I awoke to the sun today and expect 60 degrees! What a relief from the grey. I love your look in everything today! These are my colors too. Still looking for jeans that allow for a thickened waist but still slim hips and thighs. This seems to be a problem of aging for women. I love the white jeans and may order, canā€™t try on until they arrive.

    1. I hope they work for you!

  9. I love all the looks , time for a bit of spring while waiting for the atmospheric river this weekend….I love the white pheasant blouse, but at the price point and knowing me, I’d wear it once, and then it would go to the back of the closet. The look would be a stretch for me…it’s so cute I wish I could find a less pricey alternate, hmmm maybe H&M? Target? The sweater look, definitely will try this with sweaters I have, and will purchase. Have a great weekend, wet & windy in the Bay Area.

      1. Hi Jennifer, I had to come back to your post with the cardigans. As you know, it’s a rainy Sunday. I’m going to shop my closet for cardigans…and then go from there. I did order a few pieces of jewelry from Open Edit, they are cute, reasonable, and a great way to slide into spring…on a side note, I’m meeting a friend later this week and we are going shopping in downtown Petaluma. I checked out the shops and I’m looking forward to some boutiques that are on Kentucky St. I might find the perfect cardigan or two in the smaller shops. First day of Spring tomorrow, have a great week…

  10. Love the clothes and colors, although sadly not on me — but I’m ordering the white jeans b/c on me, they’ll be full length flares — so they are petite friendly. The lavender sweater that you highlight as petite friendly is not so for me b/c, while the length is good, the sleeves are way too long. The sleeves on the lovely white ‘peasant’ bouse are too long as well, and I’d want to show off the cuffs. Love the Sam Edelman block heels — going for the gold.

    1. Gotta love petite-friendly clothes. I am buying more and more crops for just that reason.

  11. I love everything in this post. The cotton sweaters are really pretty. The lavender half zip one looks really nice on you. I do think Kut from the Kloth jeans fit great. At least for me. We still have snow here but I am thinking about summer clothes.

    1. I love the fit, and the price is really nice for quality jeans.

Hi! Just wanted to let you know that I look forward to your posts every day! I do have a question though. Do you have any comments or tips on silicone rings?

    1. What sort of silicone rings?

  13. Loved your choices of Spring outfits and colors. Truly liked the
White button down shirt. So easy and soft looking.
    Have a great day

    1. Happy Thursday, Lin!

  14. Love everything today! I’m too am drawn to the lavender zip sweater!
I have a pale version of that color in a half zip fleece jacket. But the more saturated color is much better!

  15. Jennifer your outfits today are lovely and really suit your style. I love the
lavender sweater and the white jeans especially. What a beautiful spring look. I love Nordstrom too and am sad they closed the one near me.

    1. That is sad. Luckily they offer free shipping!

  16. I’m so glad you mentioned raglan sleeves, Jennifer! I’m not an expert, but I think they look better on individuals with wider shoulders because the seam lines pull the eye in. My shoulders are narrow and whenever I try on raglan sleeves I feel like they make my shoulders look even more narrow. Would love to hear your take on this some time. Thanks!

    1. The seam does draw the eye in but youā€™ll find they fit you well, rather than drooping.

  17. I love everything in todayā€™s post especially the lavender half zip sweater (a hard to find color) and the blue Birdies!

    1. I love lavender everything!

  18. Good morning! Itā€™s my first comment on your blog,? because I LOVED everything and just had to make special note of that peasant blouse from Faherty ! It looks so nice with the jeans and I can envision it in my wardrobe!
I enjoy your perspective and informative descriptions!
    Thank you!

    1. Good morning, Diane! Iā€™m glad youā€™ve joined us.

  19. I own NYDJ white capris & a pair of full length cuffed white jeans and wear them year round (winter with black booties & black cashmere turtle or with a white turtle & black or grey duster sweater). What a great investment. So pleased to see you highlighted the brand & talked about back pocket placement because it does matter! Whether anyone purchases the jeans in white, light wash or dark wash, you absolutely will not regret it. Occasionally at the end of the season you’ll find NYDJ on sale at Nordstrom Rack on line too. If you see them snap them up fast. They fly out the door like the wind.

    1. Agreed! Theyā€™re comfy and fit well too.

  20. I love all these looks today. I have not owned a pair of white slacks since I canā€™t remember when, but will definitely look into what youā€™ve styled.

  21. Good morning, Jennifer. I was wondering – do you read customer reviews before you order something? I do, and it is interesting to note that several customers gave negative reviews for that pretty blue cardigan (sleeves too long, material rough, etc.). Customer comments influence my buying – just wondered if this is true for others.

    1. I read them but also take them with a grain of salt because some reviewers arenā€™t discussing what Iā€™m concerned with.

  22. Loved all the choices you modeled today! What a breath of fresh spring air to see these spring fashion colors

  23. Pat Patterson says:

    Good morning Jennifer,
Such a pretty and soft look today. Have a great day and if you have sun at your home today, enjoy itšŸ™‚
