Splurge or Save Retro Sneakers Outfit Over 50

Happy Wednesday, ladies, and welcome to another splurge or save outfit comparison. I got several emails last week commenting that the prices between the two outfits weren’t that different. That was intentional because many ladies are enjoying shopping from both looks depending on their wardrobe goals and budget. I also hope it will inspire you to recreate these or similar looks by shopping in your closet. Today let’s look at a splurge or save retro sneakers outfit over 50.

splurge and save option for styling retro sneakersThe older I get, the more I appreciate comfy shoes. My more casual lifestyle gives me lots of sneaker options, so I was happy to see the retro sneaker trend continuing into fall 2022.Ā  You can spend a little or a lot on these, so you should decide your budget based on how much you’ll wear them and how comfy they are.

RAG AND BONE RETRO SNEAKERS / STRAIGHT LEG JEANS / CLASSIC WHITE SHIRT / SHORT TRENCH COAT / LEOPARD PRINT BELT / WOVEN LEATHER CROSSBODY / MOTHER OF PEARL DROPĀ  EARRINGS

I chose classic, timeless pieces to style with these retro sneakers. Adding too many trends at our age can look tragic, so a small touch is all we need per outfit. A classic straight jean in a pale wash brings the formality level of the jean down on par with the trainers. Darker jeans look more refined, and I was going for a super casual, modern look. Both white shirts are easy classics, but your could swap in a simple tee or lightweight sweater or blouse just as well.

RETRO SNEAKERS / STRAIGHT LEG JEANS / CLASSIC WHITE SHIRT / LEOPARD PRINT BELT / WOVENĀ  CROSSBODY BAG / MOTHER OF PEARL DROP EARRINGS /. TRENCH

The short trench is another classic, made modern by the length, Woven bags continue to be popular, as does a touch of leopard which is a timeless neutral for many. I love mother of pearl, and this larger disc-shape drop feels more current than a simple pearl stud. There are enough modern shapes in this look; I’d be quite happy with my pearl stud earrings and might even prefer them.

The splurge outfit comes in at $2,222, and the save outfit comes in at $533.

What are your thoughts on these looks?

Would you wear retro sneakers?

Thanks for reading, and be sure to wear what makes you feel confident.

  1. I really like these Splurge/Save articles. In this case I don’t see a lot of difference between the two. I probably wouldn’t buy the retro sneakers in either as I really prefer either a step in sneaker. I would definitely go for a better quality blouse but do the save selection for the rest.

  2. Unlike all the other commenters, I prefer the overall look of the Save outfit. I especially like the Save jeans and sneakers. Iā€™m not a fan of distressed jeans, and the Splurge sneakers make me think of bowling shoes. Iā€™m loving your Save/Splurge postings, Jennifer. What a great idea! šŸ„°

  3. I have the splurge sneakers in a dark green. I bought them on sale and I love them! I think they look less “clunky” than the “save” sneakers.

    1. Good to know! Clunky is not a great look for me šŸ™‚

  4. Both outfits are ok in my casual classic state of mind but I only wear sneakers in the gym. I like a ballet show or a loafer for street wear. I liked the outfit you were wearing equally as well.
Your expensive vs affordable outfits. Iā€™m guessing savy shoppers can replicate that look at well under $500, if they already own a trench. I can find at least 50% of the look in my closet right now.
A refreshing break from the zebra! šŸ˜†

    1. I’m guessing many of us can duplicate the look in our closets šŸ™‚

  5. Love the options and the look .

I would definitely wear retro sneakers. I love the SAVE look! Of course, what is not to love about the splurge one? Can I say that your “splurge” vs “save” pictures are genius!

    1. I love to see how similar they are too!

  7. Love everything about these items. Definitely a classic look I would wear for many years to come.
The higher price is rather appalling to me. Although I do think that the high end trench looks to be of better quality. The other items could easily be much less expensive and still give the same look. Iā€™ve found that one high end piece,,, like a great coat, a gorgeous belt or bagā€¦ can elevate the whole outfit. And for items that get a lot of wear and tear and need frequent turn over, like tee shirts and jeansā€¦ buying inexpensive seems practical.

  8. Yes, I would wear those retro sneakers !
I would have a big smile on my face!

Paying over $500 dollars for one jean outfit is not saving. Wearing what you have in your closet is saving. Would like posts on that. In a time of inflation, would be nice to see something other than buy or buy. Thanks.

    1. Sorry, you’re displeased with these posts. Many women are updating their wardrobes and appreciate the ideas. And as I mentioned in this post, I hope these ideas will inspire women to shop within their own closets.

  10. This is a great, wearable look, either way.

  11. Fall is my season, and I’m loving transitioning to browns & moss greens. I stick to the classics and have been pretty successful shopping my closet except for straight leg jeans. I just haven’t found the right fit yet!
I love a classic white shirt…and well I’m loving this whole look. However, lately I’m hesitating to wear white since I’ve let my hair go gray – seems to wash me out. Suggestions?

  12. I think this new addition to your blog is so fun! You keep reimagining and this one is a winner!

    1. Iā€™m really enjoying it too!

  13. This is such a great post! Thanks. The save white blouse is 100% rayon which will not have the same durability as the EF white blouse. However, I think the small white chest pocket on the EF blouse is too small. I far prefer the save Madewell jeans because they don’t have any distressing that I can see. I would not pay the high price for jeans that are all distressed. The save Sam Edelmann sneakers come in a nice shade of gray which would work for me.

  14. Jennifer, I enjoy your splurge/save outfits. Some things I would splurge or save on and it’s nice to see the options. I would definitely splurge on the purse, belt and sneakers. The “save” trench suits me better than the splurge (I don’t look good in double breasted coats). Please keep this splurge/save feature going – it’s fun to see the comparisons.

    1. Iā€™m glad youā€™re enjoying these! I learn a lot every time I make one šŸ™‚

  15. I like both these looks. I prefer to splurge on handbags and shoes and my jeans. Everything else I try to save on. I’m trying to mostly wear what I call my real jewelry as I get older. I love my pearl stud earrings. Thanks for the looks.

  16. Love the spurge sneakers and both trenches, I love trench coats.

  17. With exception of a work-out sneaker I prefer a slip-on version as otherwise feel frumpy in them plus as it is a custom (here in Canada) to remove one’s outdoor footwear when entering a home, the latter is a little more accommodating. As to the other items; I much prefer the size/shape of the ‘splurge’ purse rather than a bucket style as a cross-body bag as is less sporty and eliminates the act of digging through it. (FTR, I do have one almost identical that I find super versatile.) Whereas, on the whole I would opt for the ‘save’ side as prefer the oval buckle on the belt and regardless either Trench Coat doesn’t have a hood (why not?) I prefer the cheaper version for myself due the details of being single breasted/its Tortoise Shell buttons/gun patches/like the shape of its lapel but would remove its epaulettes and add a TS buckle with eyelets to its belt. (I’m a hobby sewer.) Last but not least; re the shirt / jeans / MoP earrings I already have in my wardrobe however would most likely trade out the latter with two plain SS stacked necklaces and add a MoP ring that I have. Hopefully that isn’t too much info. as to ‘why’ besides the pricing. -Brenda-

    1. I love reading all your thoughts, Brenda. Thanks for sharing your whys!

  18. Hi
Love the post. I would most definitely wear the retro tennis shoe. I am a 55 year old middle school teacher and on my feet all day. I have a couple pairs of new balance retro looking shoes in a couple of fun colors that I love. The new balance normally come in at $65-80 dollar range so somewhere between slurge and save , haha.
    Thanks
    Candice

  19. Love the look. My kind of style. I do wear retro sneakers. I have the black version of coat and shoes. I do have a tan all weather short coat I could wear with my white sneakers to have a different look. I need to shop my closet more. I tend to go toward savings and good sales in buying clothes these days. I do think you can be stylish and not pay a fortune.

    1. You can absolutely be stylish at any price!

  20. I’m enjoying these “Splurge or Save” posts. What a great idea!
I’m not sure that I would wear these retro sneakers, but I have a very cute pair or white Allbirds sneakers that have the retro look. Are you familiar with Allbirds?

    1. I love my Allbirds!!

  21. Love these splurge/save posts.
I always go for the better shoe because of foot issues. Like Kalene I’m wearing more sneakers these days. Also I prefer the splurge handbag.

  22. Love this splurge /save idea. Please continue. I am wearing lots of sneaker-style shoes these days because of ongoing foot issues. I used to think this would make me feel “old” but your outfits are showing me how I can turn sneakers into fashion. Thanks!

    1. Iā€™m with you on feet issues. Sorry youā€™re struggling too.

  23. I enjoy how you make me think out an outfit right in my own closet instead of running out to the store.
Thanks for helping me create great style from home.

    1. Iā€™m so pleased you get inspired, Lin

  24. Hmmmm?? Iā€™ve splurged on a few classic items but tend towards saving whenever possible. These two outfits are so similar I choose SAVE.

  25. Please continue this series. Love the attention to details.
I take things one step further – I wear 18W and a wide shoe, so my search for this outfit has just begun – and I love the challenge.

    1. Itā€™s a fun look!

  26. Paulette Levy says:

Usually Iā€™d choose the better shoe plus handbag but in this case Iā€™d choose a little less costly sneaker but keep the splurge handbag and splurge trench. I just like them better.
The jeans by Made well are great as is the less expensive white shirt. So only the Splurge Trench and handbag for me.

    1. I have great success with Madewell jeans too!

I don’t see the link for the retro save trench coat. I like the look of this coat better.

  28. I love the splurge save posts. My fav!

  29. Love this look! These pieces are timeless, and happily I have most in my wardrobe. The retro sneakers look great with this look. Did not see the link to the “save” trench, did you forget to add?

    1. Youā€™re right!! My mistake, I added the link. Thanks for letting me know.
